I was passing through by myself, it was late and I didn't want anything too heavy so I got the Yum Neau (beef salad) and a side of khao (rice) with some prik nam pla (fish sauce with chilis) in case things needed livening up. As it happened, they did. The beef salad was under seasoned, lacking cilantro, mint leaves, shredded lime leaves, lemongrass, chili flakes, or roasted rice powder. The green leaf lettuce was wilted and sad and if it was sentient, it was probably wondering what is had done to end up at such an ignominious end to what must have been a promising beginning. The portion was acceptable but not effusive. I had considered getting the pla choo chee (choo chee fish curry), but not liking boring fish asked what kind of fish it was; I was expecting to be told tilapia, that plain but inoffensive workhorse of the food service industry. I was told the type of fish itself is "choo chee". It's not. Choo chee refers to a basic red curry (absent cumin and coriander seeds) particularly suited to fish and prawns. That my server didn't know didn't bother me, but that on a slow night that she wasn't willing to find out for both of our sakes is a little disappointing and intimates volumes about the restaurant and the dearth of passion about food. If you don't come with high expectations you won't be disappointed is about the greatest praise I can muster. read more

I ordered fried rice, sour soup and other plates and we were very disappointed with the food. Fried rice and others were so salty; the soup was so sour. They are very unauthentic Thai food. We eat Thai food many times and we know how it should taste like The restaurant is owned by a white man and a Thai woman. They are trying to Americanize the food, therefore the food is no longer authentic. At checkout stand, when I said the food was so salty, the white owner did not care at all. He only focused on taking my money, so insensitive. I have never seen a insensitive business owner like this man. Wait time is typical for a Thai restaurant. The food was delicious! We had the fresh spring rolls, which were perfect to share, and it came with an amazing, thick peanut sauce. We ordered the Red curry with beef and the Pineapple curry with chicken. Both curries came with rice and were the perfect temperature to immediately start eating. We had spicy level 0.5-1 for both. Only downfall was the service was a bit slow. Had to wait a bit too long to get seated, to order, and to get the check. Food did come out pretty quickly tho. Our favorite Thai restaurant in Utah! For spice level, I wouldn't go past a 2 and I like spice. We once made the mistake of ordering a 2 and my wife couldn't even eat it. 1 seems to be perfect for all. We typically alternate between pad Thai, massaman curry and Penang curry. This is spicy heaven! I'm usually the guy who orders the spiciest thing on the menu and complains that it isn't spicy enough. Not here! On a scale of 1 to 10, I am happy with 4. It clears my sinuses and burns the colon later. I recommend the Pad Thai and Masaman (sp?) Curry with extra rice. If you love spice, get in the book by finishing a 3. Then pay the extra dollar per level to see your high score. Note that each level above 3 is double the spice of the last! My only criticism is that they sometimes mix up orders, especially with groups. And it sucks to get a 2 when you're craving a 4. It sucks more when your coworker goes home early after eating that 4 and being told it was a 2. read more

I have eaten there twice now and both times were delicious! The first time I dined in on a Sunday and it was quiet. Service was great and our server was nice. The second time I ordered to-go and received the food in 15 mins. Both times I ordered yellow chicken curry (level 1 spice). My favorite Thai dish, and let me say, not every place can make it very well-- but Chabaar was spot on! It was so good. The only thing I wasn't a fan of the cream cheese wantons and wished I had gotten more white rice with the curry. Otherwise, everything was awesome! Thai cuisine has always been a favorite and this place was a true testimony to that. The vegan food was amazing and the hostess was a sweetheart! I ordered a Panang Curry as well as the Ginger Soup. The total came out to be $20 and I got about four plates of food with my two plate order. Such a great deal and would recommend for take out and dinning in, since they have such a peaceful atmosphere in the actual restaurant. Chabaar is probably the best thai food in Salt Lake. My only compliant is that it's not downtown however it is so nice having a vegan friendly thai restaurant on the south end of the valley. Everything I have ever tried is delicious especially the green and pineapple curry and the stir fry! I am vegan and this place is extremely vegan friendly. The Palate Cleanser: My fiancé and I ordered take-out for our biz lunch as we always do for clients. The Yellow Curry hovering in at 'decent' (6.5-7 / 10). The Pad Thai, 'par' (6-6.5 / 10). Occasionally lacking texture, I always request extra sauce. (I like my dishes 'saucy'... wet as a mermaid's kiss; ((Darryl Hannah from 'Mermaid' called...))., not 'droughty'... like David Letterman's monologue in the Atacama Desert. Haha! "Love Ya, Dave!!"... He's from my hometown in Indy!) On 03-01-17, I called and asked what their 'statute of limitations' is on replacement orders and if they'd consider replacing ONLY the Pad Thai. I told her it wasn't as I'd requested (extra sauce) and she claimed 'the manager's not there'. At the time, I didn't know her rank thus, took liberty in explaining 'when the chief's away, (s)he always appoints SOMEONE to keep the tribe alive' and she persisted that she'll have the 'manager' call me back in 5 minutes. (15-20 minutes later... to no avail, so, I called BACK and reiterated the aforementioned and she agreed to replace the Pad Thai.). The Entree: Upon arrival, she'd approached me with this partially-fake / partially REALLY FAKE smirk of dismay, yet, I offer a smile and place my hand out to shake hers and make acquaintance, as she LITERALLY neither extended hers to shake mine NOR, utter ONE word!! She looked at me in pause... "It's our custom, I'm Thai!"....!!! Now, I'm ALL FOR honoring the customs/cultures of those while in their country, but, "Hey.... WAKE UP!!!... You're in AMERICA!". (Disrespect a cultural greeting, you're déclassé...; an egomaniac with an inferiority complex.) Now... for DESSERT!!! (Extra saucey!!!) Scrambling thru her stack of receipts, here wobbles up Anny's tool-boy?... co-owner?... perhaps 'the gimp' from Pulp Fiction finally revealed?... whomever, and INITIALLY asks me politely, "What was wrong with your order?"... ('Here we go, again!', running amuck..). To my dismay, I explained AGAIN... and he utters, "So, it wasn't the meat?".... "No, it was the amount of SAUCE and was too dry for my liking!"... "Well, I can get you a thing of SAUCE from the back, but, I'm not gonna replace the whole thing!"... (to have been a fly on the wall; my facial reaction HAD to have been CLASSIC...) "So, you're NOT going to replace what Anny has ALREADY AGREED to replace?"..... "NO!". "REALLY?????.... Are you being SERIOUS???".... "YEAH!", he concluded!! My conclusion; "OK... ASSHOLE!! The tea selection alone warrants we come back. However, the food was not the greatest. The pad thai was way too sweet and barely had any veggies/chicken. The red curry was a bit too mild in flavor for our preferences and wished it had more kick. I knew this to be one of a chain of Thai restaurants. The website is under construction, which left many things as a surprise, but it was on our way so we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant was cute - having been a customer back when it was "John's Place - smoking memberships and home of the 99 cent breakfast" that made for a pleasant surprise. We ordered Massaman chicken curry. The presentation was nice, but their prices were higher and the portion size smaller than we're accustomed to. The rice came in a tiny little cup that said, "Bon Appetit" which we had to laugh at. (It went along with the Adele song on their radio). So we asked for more rice to help us deal with the heat of the dish (as we're also accustomed to at other Thai restaurants) and were charged a dollar for an extra cup. They have a spiciness scale of like 0 to 10. You cannot do the Massamam curry as a 0 so we went with a 1 but were still slightly gasping at the heat. The girl says, "You should have ordered 0.5." I didn't know that was an option. My dining companion suspects they heat things up to hide the lack of flavor. We ordered the sweet sticky rice with custard. I have to admit we'd never tried that before and thought it would be the sweet sticky rice without mango. The rice was a seafoam green patty topped with custard that looked like a piece of wet bread. I guess that's normall, but it sure didn't look appetizing. It tasted okay though. As we were paying I noticed that they have a $5.00 minimum transaction for Visa and an even higher one for American Express. I know that's a violation of the Visa merchant agreement and they could lose the privilege to accept Visa for doing it. All in all, it's a cute place with mediocre service, high prices, and a reputation for high spice. In the future we'll stick with the mom & pop traditional Thai eateries that we've come to love where you have good service, reasonable prices, and pure delicious flavor. We'll skip the Tea Rose, Chaabar and any other of Anny's Take on Thai restaurants. read more

This is a sister restaurant to the Tea Rose Diner, and the food is very similar, and all excellent. The spice level runs hotter here than Tea Rose. The 3/10 at Chabaar is more like a 4/10 at Tea Rose, so beware. Once again, the star of the show in my mind are the Thai curries. I love the red and the pineapple, and could just drink a big bowl of them. They serve Epic beers, and they pair very nicely with the heat from the food. My kids love their huge fruit preserve covered pancakes, which they will serve for dinner if you ask. Love this place. Edit 6/2018: Discovered their Kao Soi. If you've never had this northern Thai noodle dish with its rich gravy you haven't lived. read more

Ever since this place popped up I have been curiously skeptical. On the outside, it looks like a place that you go to only when IHOP or Denny's has too long of a wait, aka when you are desperate and drunk. So we haven't ever gone here for years. Then we were eating at Tea Rose Diner and realized that the same people own Chabaar, so we decided to finally try it! It was so delicious, I can't believe we haven't eaten here before. The massaman has a unique taste, a bit different than other local restaurants, but in my opinion better. I had never had Kow Soi beforw and it was also delicious. Kind of a nutmeg flavor to it. If not for the really good food, I would never step foot in here. This place is literally going from bad to worse in terms of customer service. It was a weekday and I wanted to place a to-go lunch order. I called up the place at 12.30, thinking that the order will be ready by the time I reach at 1. The lady on the phone kept me on hold for 10 mins, I kept asking if there was anyone on the call. Finally i disconnected after 10 mins and redialed several times. They wouldn't pick 6 of my calls ! I then got into the restaurant and told them I was trying to call them, and the hostesses were extremely rude! They kept saying they're busy. That doesnt make any sense, there were 3 full tables with 2 ppl each. I've seen bad customer service, but this one trumps all of it. She kept arguing with me and even with me at the counter, she wouldn't take the order. I wish I could talk to the owner of this place. The food is great, and I've been here so many times over the past year, but the customer service is a joke. read more

There was only ONE waitress, on a Saturday night, during dinner time. We finally got food at 6:25. We only got one visit for water refills the entire 2 hours we were there. The food was mediocre. Chabaar is hands down the best Thai restaurant in Salt Lake City. I was introduced to them through a friend and they quickly became the benchmark by which I judged all Thai food. My favorite is the massaman curry, but all of their curries are incredible. They also have amazing "American" food, especially their vegetarian sandwich and any of their breakfast foods. We love them so much, we even had them cater our wedding! If you can strike up a conversation with the owner, Annie, do that as well, as she has great stories. read more

Having so many good reviews, it must be a great restaurant, I thought. Wrong! My wife and I had a curry duck and the chef's special, honey duck. It was possibly the worst meal I ever tasted in a restaurant. Honey sauce smelled like vinegar and everything was soaked in it. My curry was cold and rice was overcooked. When the waitress stopped by to ask how everything was, we said just OK. She did not care and left. Better find another place and spend your money on an actually good meal. read more

I think that if I would have lost my Thai virginity anywhere else, I wouldn't ever be back for more. Luckily I came here first, and I've loved every minute and bite of it. My roommates and I decided to go out to dinner one night, and the more aggressive roommate picked this place. I didn't want to try Thai food, but I also didn't want to get punched. I came in with a bad attitude, but turned that frown upside down when I saw that almost any dish could easily be made vegan/vegetarian. As a vegetarian, I am incredibly grateful for this option. I ended up ordering the tofu appetizer, which was basically fried tofu nuggets with a side of red chili sauce. I was in culinary heaven. The tofu was cooked perfectly (which isn't easy) and the red chili sauce was absolutely delicious. I was also surprised about how full I got off of an appetizer. I left happy, and even returned the next day for more. I ordered the vegan Pad-see-ew this time, which was basically noodles and tofu nuggets. As you can tell, I love tofu. What everyone says about the spice levels here is true. I tried a spice level of 1, and I damn near coughed and farted fire at the same time. My nose ran consistently for the rest of my meal and half the way home. Just be warned. I wanted to come again for three days in a row, but apparently my roommates aren't as dedicated as I am. Seriously, this place is AMAZING. I went very hungry and it was the best meal I think I've ever eaten. We started with chicken pot stickers...OMG yum. Then the Tom Kha Gai soup is to die for. Pad See Ew and Green Curry...speechless. As if we weren't ready to roll out by that point, the cute waitress (I think she's the owner...?) talked about the tantalizing and tart homemade pomegranate cheesecake. One word....INSANE. Definitely one of the best, if not the best Thai restaurants I've been to in Salt Lake City. Reasonable prices...great portion sizes...very personable and quick service. My glass was never empty. The food at chabaar is ok at best. The pho was very bland, even though they went to great trouble to advertise it on the side of the restaurant. The interior is dated and musty. After eating inside once, the service was slow and everything look so old that it made me lose my appetite. The next time i ordered to go, I got spring rolls and the mango sticky rice. I had asked the lady on the phone for pork spring rolls, but i guess she didnt understand me because when i got home, there was only veggies and a LOT of noodles inside -_- The mango sticky rice is Delicious but overprices. $7 bucks for a small amount, i don't think its worth spending my money on it.
