My daughter is a UTSA student living away from home. She calls me and says her 2018 Hyundai Elantra won't start but she knows of a mechanic close to her apartment. She has her car towed to Chad Miller Auto Care and calls me to say she needs a new battery and is being quoted $645. I ask her to hand her phone to an employee, and when I asked why this is so expensive the employee raised their voice at me. I asked for a manager and was informed it was Chad himself I was talking to. I would NOT suggest this mechanic. So I read good things about this place. From what I read, they seemed like they knew what they were doing and maybe they do, but of the two vehicles I took there, both over 10 years old and with a variety of problems, they were able to fix some things,but not all. Mine has an oil leak at least 4 different places haven't been able to figure out. Chad's garage gave me some hope, but they were never able to fix it. I take pretty much all "guarantees" with a grain of salt. "Bring it back"...pffft why would I? You couldn't fix it the First time? More likely, I'll just be dumping more money in sonl you can "half fix it" a 2nd time. One mechanic even told my wife to "hit the dash when her A/C wasn't kicking on...AFTER they fixed it. GTFO... Really!? Cost wasn't exactly on the cheap side...maybe fair, but ONLY if they fix the problem. My impression is they had way more cars than they could handle and were trying to rush them outa there. Everyone I dealt with was friendly, prompt, and although the waiting area was a cool Howard-Johnson-esque aqua and orange, I opted for their shuttle service back to my house for the day. They were kind enough to even pick me up at the end of the day so that I could get my car back. The bill was what they promised, they did NOT try to sell me additional services, and the car runs like a top. What's there not to like? My daughter recently brought her Ford Escape into your shop for a thorough mechanical inspection and while the news was not favorable, it helped her make a decision on how to proceed. Without that inspection we would have likely replaced the tires, replaced brakes and rotors, serviced the transmission and changed hoses and belts, only to be surprised by the other issues a year or two later. The service was ok, price was a little bit high for the job performed. The reason I said this is because of the following. I took the vehicle to get repaired. I already told them what was wrong with it and what possibly needed to be replaced. I even told them how to replicate the sound / issue, later on the same day they called me that they don't hear any sounds as I stated. Which bring me to the point of them not listening to the customer when I told them when and how to replicate the issue. On top of that even that I identify the issue and told them how to replicate it they still charge me the diagnostic fee, why?????? At the end they end up replacing the part and yet the noise continue sounding in my vehicle. Not too confident in the mechanics in the shop. They might be good at replacing brake pads, oil changes but after that the technical expertise is questionable. And yes I understand the vehicles and be tricky and hard to diagnose but at least listen to your clients when they tell you what is wrong and how to replicate the issue. I have had 2 of my cars serviced here before and was impressed with them so I brought my daughters car here. Engine light was on and making a knocking noise, long story short. After speaking with Chad when dropping off the car I told him it was my daughters car and likely uncared for so in all honesty I felt I was going to be paying a LOT to get all the "issues" fixed. As we all know a LOT of service centers are not exactly honest. Well this place is! Chad called an said the only issue was that my 22 y/o daughter didn't have any oil in her car!! and now it's running well with no more noises. They road tested it too - I can verify this because the gentleman who did left his Talib Kweli CD in the car lol (I will bring it back) I decided to drive it into work to really road test it and this 131k mile car sounds good! First of all let me say that the communication with this facility was top notch, and clearly on top of their game. And I was pleased that they were able to accommodate me on short notice. I came here because of the high reviews and due to my dealer not being available when I needed. I came in prepared as to what my issue was, and I really didn't expect other concerns to be brought to me like "you have to get this done", such as my air filter needing replacing. I may have needed a new air filter, but I felt like unless I forcefully declined, it was going to show up on the invoice anyway. Yes, I might be a little behind on getting my air filter, and I was planning on doing so on my next oil change, but I certainly wasn't going to do it under those terms. Perhaps a more reasonable approach would be to ask, "Do you know when was the last time you changed your air filter?" Well, actually I do Chad as I have a spreadsheet of my maintenance history and hey, you know what, it *has* been a while ago, why don't you go ahead and change it. For now, it seems like the issue may be fixed, but I feel a little more vibration than I like at some higher revs, so I may revisit this review in the future. As far as price goes, I think what I paid was just under (maybe 15% below) what a dealer would charge for the same thing, and I think that I got a 10% first time client deal. So, expect to pay just under dealer repair cost, and maybe with a lot more communication and personality. Friendly staff, tight parking, clean lobby. Convenient early hours. read more

We took our vehicle to Chad Miller Auto hoping to find an alternative to the dealership. Unfortunately, we are sorely disappointed with the service we received and the lack of customer support. We paid to have our vehicle serviced for factory-scheduled 60-, 70-, and 80,000-mile maintenance, and we were told upon pick up that "everything looks good." Shortly after leaving on a trip out-of-state, we discovered that a broken windshield spray nozzle, which the receptionist confirmed upon check-in would be fixed, was still broken. Also, while driving on the highway, the belly pan, which we later learned had eroded to an extreme degree, broke on one side, pulling with it parts of the wheel wells. After an emergency pullover, we had to remove multiple pieces of plastic from under the vehicle. Upon arriving at our destination, we took the vehicle to the dealership. We were informed that the services for which we paid at Chad Miller Auto should have included repair of the spray nozzle and an inspection of the undercarriage (both of which were listed on our receipt from them). We were also told that the damage underneath should have been reported. Despite Chad Miller Auto servicing our vehicle and telling us everything was fine, we ended up paying over $1,300 on additional repairs. In the last week and half, we have reached out five times to discuss our experience, spoken with three employees, and twice been told we would receive callbacks that never occurred. During each attempt, we have either been ignored, told information that turned out to be untrue, or met with outright hostility. While I would have much preferred to resolve the situation privately, I am posting this review because we can no longer afford to spend time attempting to engage this business. In the end, Chad Miller Auto refused to stand by their work on our vehicle and did not provide us with basic customer service. We will not be returning. To Chad Miller Auto: Please do not post a response to this review. As a reminder, I spoke with Tony during my second phone call to your business. Tony informed me that we would be refunded for the belly pan and that he would call me back later that day. He never did. During my fourth phone call, Jason asked me to send the receipt from the dealership so you all could discuss a refund. I sent the receipt, called to confirm that you received it, and was told I would receive a callback later that day. No one called me back (that was three days ago). If you were willing to work with me on this matter or offer an explanation about our experience, you have had multiple opportunities to do so. read more

I'm not a mechanic but I play one at home. Luckily, there are actual mechanics like Chad Miller's crew who can fix a (ahem) botched DIY job. While doing some work on my car--quite successfully I might add (until it wasn't )--I managed to break a lug stem off one of my wheels. You know the bolt your lug nut attaches to. Great. Thinking it would be an easy fix, I pulled off the wheel & the brake caliper & quickly decided I should quit while I was ahead & not mess things up even more. I opened Yelp & sent a few quote requests to three highly regarded shops on the website. Within hours, I had two closely aligned quotes & one almost double the other two. By the way, this is a great service that Yelp offers. Yelp gives you an average response time & it seemed accurate in my experience. I went with Chad Miller whose quote was in line with the first shop, and sounded reasonable given the job was mostly labor intensive. I scheduled an appointment on their website & had a confirmation email within a few hours from Chad on the weekend. That was a good sign. The night before my appt I received an auto-reminder as well. In the morning I arrived to a busy shop. I gave them my name & Chad promised he'd have my car ready by the end of the day. Great! I ordered a Lyft & patiently waited for it to arrive. Another customer dropped off her car but told Chad she was stranded. He offered to give her a ride in his own vehicle so she wouldn't have to wait around & asked me if I needed one as well. I told him I already ordered a Lyft but thanked him anyway. Really exceptional customer service. I don't know if that is shop policy but I'm sure the young woman appreciated the ride. And, I could tell immediately that Chad seemed like a friendly guy. His quote, in line with the other shop, told me he was likely trustworthy. At lunch time--about four hours after I dropped off my car--Chad called to tell me it was ready. Since I expected it to be done later in the day, I was pleasantly surprised. When I picked up & paid for my car, I inspected it briefly--looked good. The wheel isn't falling off so I guess they did it right. I should note that their waiting area is fairly small. I cant remember if they have a TV or free WiFi. They do have a long table with bar stools that you could work from if you wanted I suppose. I wasn't there that long. They do offer complimentary sodas & popcorn from a sketchy looking popcorn maker. Nothing fancy. They have 4 bays with a team of mechanics who seem to know their stuff. It's located on the Walmart side of De Zavala, right next to the Valero. From the quote to payment, the entire process was painless & I felt comfortable with the folks at Chad Miller's shop. Also, the quote I received from Chad on Yelp was exactly the price I paid (+ like .75 or something nominal). TL;DR: Honest, professional shop. Friendly owner. Quality work. Fair prices. However, they are not cheap by any means. Their prices are fairly high but for good reason since they are so good. This place is a rip off! OWN UP TO WHAT YOU ADVERTISE!! Nothing against the technician, he did a great job on my car. It's the guys who are running this business. I had made an appointment to have my A/C checked because the air wasn't getting cold like it used to. I figured all it needed was freon. Sure enough that's all it needed. So, they had this sign posted in two places or more in the office. When my car was ready I was originally quoted around $290!!! I was like woah!! Why so much? Jason (I think is his name) was taking care of me and didn't even bother to explain what the technician did and asked me for my payment. I had to tell him if I can have a hard copy of the work that was done. I was reading through it throughly and saw that the Freon was $19.80 and the remaining of the charge was labor! I pointed to the sign and explained that's not what is advertised. His response was "that is per hour". I responded, where in your advertisement does it say per hour?! I wasn't going to pay that. He sat there annoyed and asked his boss what they can do. He brought down the labor price to $195.93 (that is not even the $139.95 that is shown in the advertising!) At this point I was like whatever. I'm not going to argue with a grown ass man. I should have technically only paid $69.98 for labor (because I chose to leave my car there to be repaired), if they would have been generous enough to own up to what they advertise. It's not like they needed to fix a whole engine! It took two hours to just add Freon and do some diagnostic testing! Give me a break! read more

I left my 2011 Highlander for CV joint service. I know fluid leakage can cause degradation of boots that protect CV joints. Their diagnostic suggested I replace the auto transmission filter, gasket and flush the system and the radiator. Bear in mind I had no apparent problems with the radiator or automatic transmission. One week later the transmission goes out on my move from San Antonio to Spring, TX leaving me stranded around Schulenberg. All the mechanic in Schulenberg could offer is that my transmission is blown. He can't point to any event that could have caused it. He is not a transmission expert. Some experts online suggest the following about transmission flush "The flushing procedure may cause some fluid to move in the opposite direction of normal flow due to eddy currents, which may increase the risk of dislodging debris and causing it to settle somewhere it shouldn't." You live and learn. I would suggest to anyone unless they are having problems with their transmission to leave it alone. This work cost $2,500, a new transmission probably $6,500 (I'm not going used). I will probably just sell the Highlander to the mechanic in Schulenberg if he will buy it. This isn't a reflection of Chad Miller or his service but a warning to all having their vehicle serviced. Don't do procedures that you don't feel are needed. This lesson cost me my vehicle and is upsetting. Sorry for the negative but beware. read more
