I had the shrimp taco--flavorful, though a bit on the mushy side. My husband had the chile relleno, which was good, but the sauce was very spicy (a heads-up for those sensitive to heat). The service was excellent, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Overall, a great experience and one we'd definitely recommend if you're in the area.

I was hoping they had mole but they didn't, which might have been too carby anyway. I was pleased to see that the menudo didn't have corn in it making it something I can have. The menudo was excellent, they don't skimp on the tripe and it tasted great, especially with the chili oil at end of the buffet. The Birria was also very good and I had to try the nopales con huevos which was okay. I wish I could have the tortillas that are made in site, my wife loved them enough to wrap a few up to take home. However had I not been writing a Yelp review I would have just had more menudo instead. It's just that good. I suppose one thing to know is about the long communal tables. In case that's a problem for anyone.

So after settling in line and realizing we were in for the long haul-my breakfast burrito craving instincts started kicking in,so I jumped on my phone and opened Yelp and saw this interesting looking spot wasn't too far away. With my spot secure in line by my buddy,I jumped in my car and headed to Taqueria California in Windsor. The shop is located in a multi tenant shopping center so parking is zero issue. Walking in I was greeted by the amazing smell of breakfast meats cooking with those beautiful Mexican spices,I knew I was in the right spot. The very friendly staff took my order of 2 breakfast burritos-I got a Bacon version and a Chorizo version-they cost $13.00 each Both came with a green and red sauce on the side and also a complimentary small bag of chips. I ended up trying a little bit of the bacon burrito, since it was my friends,it was pretty good and one can never go wrong with a bacon breakfast burrito-but honestly my chorizo burrito was amazing. It was perfectly seasoned-not overly greasy-and then paired with the two salsa-each bite was better than the next. The potatoes went so well with the eggs and chorizo and cheese-I enjoyed it very much. This was the perfect meal to start off what ended up being a big day of beer drinking at the brewery. In closing-if you ever find yourself in the Windsor area and are craving a breakfast burrito-I give this shop 2 major thumbs up and guarantee you will enjoy your meal from Taqueria California.

As far as Breakfast Burritos go, This was top notch. A nice ratio of meat, potato, egg with sour cream and a fresh tasty pico de gallo all combined in a great tortilla and wrapped beautifully for easy consumption. It came with 2 salsas, a red that was great in flavor and a little spice, and a green packed with flavor and less spice.

Their full menu is varied and robust. Dishes like clay oven specialties, several types of curries, (seafood, chicken, goat, lamb), momos, biryani, soup and even Himalayan fried noodles and kabobs. Express Lunch menu (menu notes which items are gluten free and vegan), includes lentil soup, salad, butter naan and choice of white or brown rice. We really appreciated the brown rice option. Chicken tika masala - tandoori roasted chicken simmered in a mild creamy sauce. Our sweet server (owner?) mentioned that about 95% of the people love this dish and I am definitely in that group. Wonderful flavors and generous amount of tender chicken. Tofu, kale & potato curry - ingredients all simmered with basil and coconut milk. Very flavorful and seemed healthy. My husband would definitely order again. Our server was friendly, caring and was always smiling. Two servers were handling the entire dining room plus the outdoor diners and they were seamless in their efforts. Our server had recommended the tika masala to me and she was curious what I thought of it. I would order it again tomorrow! The interior is decorated comfortably. Located across the street from the town green. A lovely and enjoyable first time dining experience here.

Inside the restaurant there is a calming feeling as they were playing slow Hindu chanting music low on their sound system. The first server We began with was very young and maybe learning the menu still as he was really not that good at answering questions on the menu. As soon as we checked in on Yelp, suddenly service picked up. Another more experienced server brought us first, hand towels to wipe out hands (a nice touch, but the towels were almost cold when he brought them, was it an after thought?); and he also brought us complimentary cups of dal that were very tasty. The dishes we got were saag lamb, butter chicken, and organic channa masala, and garlic buttered Naan. Had our first server known how to describe menu better we may have chosen a few different items. He did recommend the butter chicken as one of his favorite so that's why we got it as we often enjoy it other places as well. It was very good, a classic with great sauce, probably the favorite dish. The saag lamb was good too, but we almost got the patak lamb, similar sounding dish but maybe creamier/ other veggie too? But our first server could not really describe difference well. I'm thinking we may have enjoyed the other dish better than saag lamb which was good, but felt the spinach was extremely over cooked, and so finely chopped almost like it was highly minced or powdered? But it was flavorful. The Channa Masala was on the dry side. We we're trying to decide on a saucy vegetable dish and we asked about this dish because we liked that it said organic. That same first server said it was saucy, but not that saucy. Each dish comes with your choice of white or brown rice, or steamed veggies. Two dishes we got brown rice with, and the third we got steamed veggies because we thought there would be more sauce overall to add them too. The rice was allot ( took quite a bit home); the veggies were this nice mix, but so boring with no taste, and what a waste. The veggies even had water floating in bottom of dish. It would be so much nicer if there were an option to have these lightly stirfried with a little flavor as an option ( they were completely bland) , and there was really not enough saucy stuff to add them to so only partially eaten, left remaining there on table instead of taking home with other stuff. We asked for a sample of their side sauces and we got a tiny (like a tablespoon each?) 3 dish sampling of their very tasty homemade mango sauce, tart and tangy cilantro mint sauce, and some sweeter tamarind sauce. But they were very tiny amounts. The Naan was light and crisp, very nice, but could barely taste garlic butter. We asked for our dishes to be medium heat and it was fairly mild for us still, but i guess with American palate, spicy can be relative. But oh well. We also had cups of chai (under $5.00) that had refills, and a glass of house white wine ( Murphy good Sauvignon Blanc was only $8.00 so that was a deal). I'm giving 4 stars for their efforts, but hope they read this so they can improve a few things.

Unfortunately, today's experience was completely different and extremely disappointing. Our server clearly didn't know the menu or the prices, which we completely understand can happen when someone is new. However, you should at least be familiar with the menu when working in a restaurant. At one point, I ordered a grilled cheese and the server literally said, "Oh, we have that? Can you show me where we offer that?" I honestly couldn't believe it. There were only two other couples in the restaurant, so it wasn't overly busy, yet it took about 30 minutes for our food to come out. When it finally arrived, our order was incorrect. I ordered onion rings and received fries. I'm not upset about the fries, but I specifically wanted onion rings and would have appreciated being told they were unavailable or having the order corrected. My husband ordered his burger medium rare, and it came out extremely overcooked. There were also some things that were honestly very concerning from a food-service standpoint. We watched our server bring a plate of food to another couple, set it down in front of them, realize it wasn't their food, and then take that same plate and deliver it to a completely different table. Once food has been set down in front of someone and is sitting there while someone is breathing over it, it should absolutely not be delivered to another customer. That was extremely frustrating and unhygienic to watch. Unfortunately, our server also seemed much more focused on talking with the men in the restaurant and wasn't very attentive to us, which made it difficult to get the help or service we needed. It came across as very unprofessional. I will say, once the male server stepped in, he made sure we were well taken care of and did his best to make things right. We really appreciated his effort and attentiveness. We were really disappointed because we genuinely enjoyed this place last month. Unfortunately, after today's experience, we won't be returning. Hopefully management takes this feedback seriously because the potential is clearly there, but the service and food today were nowhere near the experience we had previously.
