To start off with-- very limited "Legal" parking. Everything on the side and behind the place says "reserved" even on a Saturday morning until 1pm. Very small place. You better not have a personal space bubble over 18 inches. "Family style" seating is expected. There are a few (4) single Family 4 tops and maybe 6 booths but the rest of the seating is shared seating.Busy this morning. I had to wait about 10 mins for a single spot to be cleared. Very basic menu. I don't mind basic when done well. This wasn't. Eggs were cold- had min scrambled- a table mate(not in my party) had his fried- his were cold too. My waitress brought me a fresh egg. We ate here on Friday night during the fall Antique Alley. The write ups made it sound like a quaint, well established place. It was fairly slow for a Friday night and probably only about 25-30% full. I asked about the BBQ chicken and the waitress said it was a chicken breast with bbq sauce. I ordered that, with a baked sweet potato and 'Oriental' vegetables. Yes, 'oriental'. Waitress said they were mixed veggies. The chicken breast was cleverly disguised as a chicken quarter-a leg and a thigh. lol The chicken quarter looked odd and it took me a while to figure out why. The skin was smooth and colorless, like it was boiled-or maybe covered while it cooked and the skin never got crisp. It had a slight freezer burn taste. The bbq sauce tasted good, but it was poured over the top of the chicken right before bringing it to the table. It was all over the plate. The sweet potato was small but tasted good. The waitress brought brown sugar when we asked for it. It was the best part of the meal. The oriental veggies were broccoli stalks and some other green stuff. Not sure. I was not able to eat all of my meal and not because I was full or satisfied. Except for the sweet potato, it looked and tasted unappetizing. This restaurant needs to scale down it's large menu and focus on doing a few menu items really well. The BEST fried pickles I've EVER had and I've had a lot!! They were fried to perfection with a lighter batter and hot oil. They were not greasy at all and the homemade ranch dressing is the bomb! The liver and onions were terrific! Co-worker had the chicken fried steak and he said it was great. Not over cooked or over battered at all. LOVE this place for breakfast! I go almost every Sunday after church for breakfast. Went there today and got huevos rancheros. So fresh and flavorful! The western omelette is also great! Friendly place that will make you feel like you've entered a time warp, back to 1940. In fact, I think it's been open since at least 1940. Our family has been going to Chaf-in for many years! We love the food and the wonderful Hispanic ladies that work there. The prices are also very good. We don't however enjoy Fox News blasting on both TVs when we're trying to enjoy breakfast. You literally feel like you have walked into republican headquarters. What a great little find! A previous review addressed to the 'weary US-67 traveler who was tired of greasy gas station food' caused us to veer off our path by a few miles and so glad we did. Our waitress, Kathleen, was an absolute doll. So friendly and attentive and helped us navigate through a surprisingly large menu for such a small establishment. We started off with homemade, piping hot onion rings followed by a double cheeseburger, Philly steak sandwich, and homemade sweet potato fries. Worst food of my life. The chicken fried steak had no flavor and was tough. Gravy had no flavor. Mashed potatoes didn't seem to be more than either instant potatoes scooped into a ball or a plain baked potato smashed up...also no flavor. The veggies were so over cooked they were like mush. Black eyed peas were tasty and actually had good flavor. But the really sad part is even though the pies are homemade, the chocolate pie was horrid. This is the third time I've been here, and while the food is ok, the wait staff (female) are never friendly. They seem so distant from their service oriented work. The young gentleman waiter, however, is very good. But most repelling is the female cook standing in the service window chowing down on food even as she was preparing it. Stopped by Cleburne last weekend. Tried this place based on former reviews. Wow was I disappointed. The service was beyond horrible. Me and the customer next to me had to beg the server gal to refill our coffees when we were the only customers in the entire place! Noticed the main lady wasn't around at the time so they got very lazy. Food was midocre at best.
