I am happy to report that I no longer dread going to the dentist. I mean, I really shouldn't. I kind of hit the genetic jackpot when it came to teeth. I didn't floss until age 26, I didn't see a dentist between the ages of 13 and 19, yet I haven't had a single cavity since I got my full set of permanent teeth. And the kicker? I didn't even need wisdom tooth extractions! Yet I hated going to my previous dentist's office because: 1. I kept getting the same, super heavy-handed hygienist despite requesting a different one every time. 2. I hardly got to see my actual dentist. 3. My dentist referred me to a dental surgeon who installed a crown that was too large (I had a physical injury to a tooth which caused it to die, so I had to get a root canal and a crown). 4. He kept insisting for me to get Invisalign, and every time I expressed any remote interest, he quoted me a higher price. Seeing Dr. Paul Chai was such a breath of fresh air (HAH, get it?!) He was friendly, personable, efficient, yet thorough. He does the cleanings himself, and (OMG) without causing excruciating pain to your gums! He taught me a flossing trick to avoid worsening the tightening around my crown. He also straight up told me that Invisalign would not be cost-effective for me, since my teeth are for the most part straight and my bite is fine. THAT IS A TON OF MONEY I JUST SAVED AND CAN NOW SPEND ON MORE EATING! And this may not be of importance to you, but is of extreme high importance to me: THERE ARE SO MANY AWESOME PLUSHIES AND OTHER TOYS IN THE OFFICE! Chai Dentistry is anything but cold and sterile. Came here for a checkup and teeth cleaning and left happily. I never liked going to the dentist but everyone who works here is really friendly and personable. My dentist did a great job cleaning my teeth without hurting my gums which is very important to me! My mouth felt very refreshed after my cleaning. I really enjoyed the decor at this office. The waiting area was really clean and has very comfy couches, magazines, and nice paintings. Also, I did not need to wait too long for my appointment which was nice. This place was pretty easy to find and has a very easy parking lot. My last dentist had a place that was so hard to find parking, that I had to come at least an one-hour early or I would be late for my appointments! My first impression of the office was that it was very homely and inviting. The person at the front desk was super friendly and it's a family business (father, mother, and son working in this office). (I love supporting small businesses). I had come about 10 minutes before my appointment and thought that maybe I had to wait, but no, after about 5 minutes of paperwork, they put me right in the chair. The younger doctor (the son) took care of me and was super professional. I always dreaded doing the x-rays since they were so uncomfortable with that plastic thing in your mouth, but it was completely painless. With the new technology they had, I was looking at my full mouth xray in less than 5 minutes! After the cleaning, he pointed out some spots that I would need to brush more on, and answered all my questions on whitening and such. Very good experience. I think I found my new dentist! read more

I can't believe I'm writing a five star review of my dentist, but here goes: I don't like going to the dentist. In fact I dislike it so much that I didn't bother to go for over a decade. I was young and not prone to cavities, so what did it matter? A close friend of mine had some issues with less-than-great dentists over the years before he found Dr. Chai, who proceeded to get his teeth in the right again. My buddy was so pleased with Dr. Chai's work that he insisted I pay him a visit. I've been going semi-regularly for the last 5 years or so. In that time he's managed to reverse my receding gums, fill a few cavities and fix a chipped tooth. I won't say going to the dentist is now a pleasant experience for me, but Dr, Chai makes it as bearable as possible. Not only is he very skilled, but his manner is exceptional. (aka doesn't mean much as I try to avoid the dentist as much as possible) Chai Dentistry is a family run practice. 2 Dr. Chai's, father and son, with the mother taking care of the front. They're Taiwanese speaking both fluent English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese. As such it's a perfect place to bring your whole family. The older generation gets along with the skilled elder Chai, and the kids get to chill with the cool Chai. (Parents, this is a great place to show your kids that they too can become a cool dentist) I was referred to this office through a friend few years back. Before I used to go to the family friend dentist in a dingy stripmall. There I had my wisdom tooth with the dentist jamming his hand down my mouth as the tooth flipped over and he had to grab it out. I also had many crowns other things done extremely poorly. (As in they would get infected and.. just bad stuff happened.....) Fast forward many years when I decided to get a real dentist. As I'm not "old" I get checked up Dr. (young) Chai. He's easy to talk to (when you can talk) and makes you feel at ease while being competent at the same time. As this is a family run practice, they really do care about the quality of your teeth and aren't merely trying to upsell you on any extra procedures. Honestly, like many people, I hate visits to the dentist. I dread it. In fact, I usually just put it off. Chai Dentistry made me change my mind. They have allowed me to push back appointments because of the terrible traffic I have to endure from driving over from Monterey Park - I like this practice so much that I am willing to drive 30 miles to them. I considered Dr. Chai a "practical artist" who sincerely loves his job and cares about his patients. He explains your conditions professionally without scaring you into over-treatments or making you paranoid. Coming from some of the most prestigious dental schools in the world, Dr. Chai masters in what he is doing and takes great pride in his career. After filled out my cavity, he showed me the "before/after" X-rays comparison to show the change. "Wow, now the tooth is so beautiful!" We exclaimed together. I never thought filling a tooth can be considered an art work, but Dr. Chai proved me wrong. He made cavity filling a precise and artistic endeavor that makes practical impact on a patient's health (no exaggeration intended). Last but not least, everyone in the clinic seems to be passionate and skillful. I personally have great experience with Mrs. Chai, a lovely lady who is knowledgeable about her works and sincerely cares about the patients. Hearing that I lived around UCLA, she nicely rescheduled my appointment so I could avoid the crazy LA traffic. That is, She makes considerate suggestions for you! All in all, I highly recommend this clinic and it's super advance technology. For those who might be mistaken by the name of the clinic: The clinic is trilingual, but that DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT discourage you from visiting the clinic simply because you do not speak Mandarin or Taiwanese. FYI before you decide to go visit this dental office. ------------------------------------ As I complained to my colleague about the bad dentists I had before, things like multiple whole mouth X-rays to use up insurance, and most insane, turn a cavity into root canal and crown. Those are the most common practices that bad dentists do today. My colleague assured me it won't happen at this dental office, which is run by a family, the wife as a register, and two dentists, the husband and their son. After first trial visit with my own cash payment, none of the bad things happened, but not until second visit. Thanks to Yelp, below are some for your references before you would like to give it a try. 1. If the husband smacks your shoulder, it is a sign that he is super friendly with you, even though it is the first time you meet him. Let him repeatedly smack your shoulder to fully disclose his passion! If you are like me bringing this up afterward to the wife as an uncomfortable thing, big mistake. She would say you are just the few who don't appreciate the friendly behavior. Maybe too sensitive. She did apologize. Then she changed her tone and attitude into frustration. 2. When you call in to provide your insurance ID, do not just brief the wife your insurance type and coverage etc., and ask her to check for details to confirm. The wife would tell you, "You know all your personal information," (although the dental office already has all my personal information on first visit), it is convenient for you to look up the details by yourself, which somewhat makes sense, and not much to complain, except her abrupt tone and attitude. 3. The son does excellent dental work with great care and gentle. But if you have tooth pain that is due to poor dental work from other place, after X-ray exam, he would not provide you further recommendation or advice. If you bring up you are still suffering the pain to make next appointment, the wife would suggest you go seek out help from the dentist who did the work. As a reminder, never use the phrase, "Can something might be overlooked?"; otherwise she will be outraged. 4. Last thing, money. If the wife tells you "as an acquaintance" that she will not charge you this and that, consider it as a commercial advertisement. I was up front with her that I was willing to pay for the difference. Even though I assured her to pay for the difference that insurance doesn't reimburse, when I called in for next appointment, the wife was simply complaining on the received amount from insurance is too little. After two follow up phone calls with her abrupt response, including one simply hung up on me, I stopped by the office and offered her a check with the amount more than what patient pays in the insurance billing statement. She billed every item, and I paid every "this and that" to make it an end of another poor dental experience. read more

by far the best dentist I have ever been to. I've switched dentists over eight times already because I've had so many issues with dentists trying to rip me off, exaggerating my problems, creating excess pain, etc. Dr. Chai is exceptionally skilled, when he did my cleaning and filled my cavity he did a perfect job, and the experience was actually comfortable! He was also very informative and honest, told me what problems I had and what options I had to fix them. It felt like a very objective assessment of my teeth, which is something you can't get at other dentists. The office is very homey feeling, I didn't feel like I was in a dentist's office at all. They really go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and happy, I think they really understand how patients feel. I came to Chai Dentistry for cleanings and wisdom teeth consultation. I was hesitant to get my wisdom teeth out, but Dr. Tsongi Chai was able to skillfully remove both of my wisdom teeth very quickly without any pain. No need for general anesthesia.
