The atmosphere for Mystic was very cozy and seems like a local find that most people don't know about. We chose to sit outside as it was perfect out! The service was super attentive and helpful when we were making our choices on what we should get. It had a kind of divvy vibe to it which was awesome and makes it that much better! The burger that I had was cooked perfectly and I added the OG BBQ sauce with it and a side of Mac-n-cheese. I will say though, the mac-n-cheese was pretty disappointing, was a bit too starchy and there didn't seem to be really much cheese with it. So if you go to get the awesome burger, just get fries. We also got some char-grilled oysters that might have had a bit too much spices and seasoning on it that it got quite overwhelming. But summing it up, burgers were amazing, sides we underwhelming, make sure you get the OG BBQ sauce on your burger though! read more

I originally ordered from Grub hub the catfish and grits from this establishment. It was so good that I decided to make an in person trip. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed at all. It's a new business for the family owners (Dad was the host when we went to Saturday lunch, son is the owner/chef) and they totally deserve success!! We were a table of three and did a pretty broad sampling around the menu. APPS Probably the best fried oysters we have ever had! Popcorn shrimp and calamari -- whoever is doing the frying knows EXACTLY what they are doing -- the batter was light, crispy and greaseless, with the seafood within remaining tender and juicy. Super yum! MAINS Brunch hash with brisket was superb--two beautifully poached eggs on top. We added a little more bbq sauce to the beef (LOVE that they bring a selection of BBQ and hot sauces to your table). Oyster Po Boy -- again -- brilliantly fried oysters and the perfect bread for the sando. The only thing that would have made this sandwich better would be offering the remoulade sauce as an option over the sauce it came with -- which slightly overpowered the taste of the fabulous oysters. Pulled pork sandwich-- just perfect. Super generous portion of pork -- had to fork some before actually making it a sandwich. The jalapeños and pickled onions are a great topping. I highly recommend a mix of the mustard bbq and Cajun bbq sauces as a little dip for the sandwich. OVERALL -- 10 stars out of 5! Love the little things like having a water carafe, extra napkins and salt/pepper on the table. Everything is sparkling clean. Three FREE video arcade games in a side room! What a great place for smoked brisket and some of the best creole food in NoVa. A short jaunt off of touristville (King Street) in Old Town? You will not be disappointed. Although the place sports BBQ in its name (and are of course some of the tasty options on their menu) it is much more diverse than most barbecue establishments. As mentioned, the smoked brisket is divine, tender as can be and nicely smoked. The happy hour wings (slightly smaller portion than the reg menu) were meaty and perfectly charred and they are accompanied by a small side of yummy slaw. In Alexandria hanging out with a friend when hunger strikes. We were only 10 minutes away from Mystic Bar and Grill so decided to give them a go. Being a La native I'm always hesitant to try restaurants that label their dishes "Southern" and "Creole" because they often don't measure up. For appetizers we ordered shrimp and crawfish fritters and green tomatoes with lump crabmeat. Both came out fast. They were both ok just lacking flavor. For entrees I ordered the Creole catfish which according to the menu was catfish on a bed of cheddar grits topped with shrimp Creole. Imagine my surprise when the catfish came out on top of a grit cake??? I wish the menu specified it was a grit cake and not grits like I was expecting. My friend ordered the shrimp and crawfish etouffee with a side of Mac and cheese. We found both entrees bland and as a Southerner, the Mac and cheese was just disrespectful. Although the banana foster bread pudding sounded good we were not ready for another possible lackluster dish. Ugh..was hopeful for a good meal here. Wow! What a great find in Old Town Alexandria. If you enjoy barbecue but want something a little more upscale than Mission this is a great place. They offer all the classics. Brisket, smoked wings, baby back and of course pulled pork. I loved that the smoke wasn't over powering as it can be at some of the old school BBQ places . (I know that's a thing for some ) but I don't enjoy it myself. The brisket was cooked just right, you don't get a choice so I would say it was more on the lean side vs moist. Flavoring was perfect. My wife chose the Delta catfish and it's amazing! The best part of that dish is creole shrimp sauce. Oh that reminds me I should add even though it says it's a BBQ place they have a real nice offering of southern and creole dishes. The corn bread served with this outstanding orange butter is like nothing i have ever had. All the sides are really great mac and cheese, collard greens that could possibly be the best in the DMV . The fried green tomatoes need to be completely reworked. They are hard and dry with an unremarkable breading. And why put crab on them?? Make good fried green tomatoes that stand on their own. The barbecue meats are pretty good, especially the brisket. The interior is clean but decor wise it feels sterile. You cannot smell ANY barbecue cooking inside or out (weird). The restaurant has sauces but you have to ask for them. Why? Put them out on the tables, please. We tried several dishes to get a feel for this restaurant. We'll come back. read more

Came here on a weekday towards closing. We were pleasantly surprised how good their BBQ is!! Especially at the end of a day. Even all the sides are very good, too. I was never left impressed by collard greens but this one made me want seconds! We had the rib platter and a brisket sandwich, both were cooked well with lots of flavor.
