The East End is always fun to explore because you never know what you are going to find. Champ has been on my to-try list to try for quite some time, but they are closed weekends, and that is typically my feasting time where I can casually eat any manner of beast. However this was a slow Monday and these 100 reviews for the year are not going to write themselves, so I need to try new places instead of going to Treebeards again. It is the same set-up as Sparkle: walk-up to the order window, wait in line, place order, pay, and wait for your number to be called. They give you little tabs with your order number on it, however the lady working the window recognized everyone (including me) by sight from the order we placed earlier, so she knows what she is doing if your little tab blows away in the wind (it was really windy today.) While I enjoy the food at Sparkle, and it spawned an internet famous aphorism "not to let anyone dull your sparkle" I would say that (a) the location is worse as far as downtown workers go but (b) it is a block off the light rail when that switch gets flipped, and (c) the food quality is a little higher end than Sparkle. For fairness' sake I will also include comparisons to Stanton's City Bites, The Refinery, Lankford, Hard Rock Cafe, and Beck's Prime just so nobody gets picked on, but you can fairly evaluate a big-burger experience. A review of their food in two acts today: Champ Burger with bacon and cheese: weighing in at 1/3 pound patty at $4.89 the value is inherently there for how much food you get. This is a large burger to eat - definitely on the north side of 1/3 pound at least compared to what 1/3 is at Fuddrucker's. Larger than the patty at Sparkle definitely. It is not lean at all. It is juicy. I got everything on top of it so I am not sure how it is plain, but taken in sound proportion with lettuce/tomato/mayo/ketchup/bacon/cheese and the bun it is a very enjoyable bite every time. Though a word of caution, it does get drippy, so don't eat over your khaki pants. While I thought it was humorous as the lady was handing me the bag, she hesitated for a moment and grabbed more napkins and shoved them in the bag before handing it over. I thought it was funny because I always have to ask people for extra napkins. But she was so good at her job she gave me one look walking up and correctly thought to herself: "this idiot is probably going to get mustard on himself at least twice today, better lend a hand getting him out of a spot of bother later." The bacon is not piled on to the agonizing excess of Lankford's grim burger where literally it is a pound of bacon, but there is so much there that you feel like you definitely got your money's worth, unlike paying more at Whataburger and getting so much less. The bacon is crispy and salty, just like the Flying Spaghetti Monster intended. The cheese is much higher quality than Sparkle - it adds a smooth, creamy offset in a bite of the burger - and the mayo rounds it out for perfection. There are no "Designer" sorts of burgers like the Refinery however when you do the basics like a bacon cheeseburger so tremendously well, who cares you can't something fancier. And they do the basics so much better than Beck's Prime that can at least be covered up with heavy doses of jalapenos and onions in Bill's Burger. While Hard Rock has a fantastic plain burger, Champ rivals them, just they are in a different zip code so it's much harder to swing if you have tickets for the Alley and want to stay in walking distance, HRC is always going to win. Also unlike Stanton's which offers the tremendously pleasing Brunch Burger, Champ offers nothing in the way of a fried egg option, but they do offer a unique option of putting a ham slice on a burger. I like odd things like that maybe next time. Beer battered onion rings: ringing up at $2.15 compared to the $3.25 chili cheese fries I am inclined to agree with David N. that the onion rings are delicious. They are thick but well-formed, unlike Sonic's failboats where you bite into it and the onion slides out in a failure pile of sadness. The batter is pleasing, it tastes like 'Merica. Other things to add: David N.'s review from 2011 writes that it is cash only, and that has changed, they accept credit cards now - including Discover. That review almost scared me off because I hate cash only places like Lankford. There's a large part of me that has a sincere distaste for walking around town with peasant napkins, or as the mainstream media calls them, dollar bills. So if you too dislike peasant napkins, then bring ol' plastic here and have a good time, unlike Lankford which refuses to join the 20th century and accept Daddy's credit card. Champ is a winner if you are willing to leave downtown at lunch. read more

I wanted to be different and get a double meat, double cheese, with bacon and onion rings. WOW, was I crazy, my burger was a beast. I have a huge appetite, but after consuming this mammoth of a sandwich I was stuffed. Next time I'll get a single meat with cheese. The burger was bit on the fatty greasy side, but that's what made it so good. The fries were basic and the onion rings were delicious. Comes very old school brown bag and white paper wrapped. I first ate at Champ Burger in 2001. I highly and happily recommend this place. Ordering and then getting your order is easy and efficient. Adjacent windows: one where orders are placed, one where they are picked up when the order number is called. Seating is at picnic tables under an open, roofed patio which has ceiling fans. One of my favorite burgers in the Houston area for the price. Not the best in town of course but definitely high quality meat between a bun. This place has been in business since the dawn of time and is sorta hard to visit if you don't work in the area during the week. It took me nearly a year to make the trek the first time I ever came here a few years back. The most recent time I took a coworker since we were in the area for work during lunchtime. I ordered the double burger and onion rings that everyone raves about. The meal was a great price for the amount of food. The two 1/3lb patties seemed to be nearly 3/4 lb by the time I finished it. I could barely eat the onion rings, but that's okay. They were nothing to write home about. Found parking along the side street, close to the walk-up counter. There are concrete picnic tables along the west side of the shack. A must try for any burger lover. No it's a not a gourmet burger like some places around town, but any restaurant with a no frills burger with fresh meat for around $6 is worth a try. Folks, it's been in business a long time for a reason. Now that I am better at writing I can probably do Champ Burger like a champ! Champ Burger is a local landmark for breakfast and lunch east of downtown Houston. How is this possible? I believe that the chuck that is used is probably not very lean. If i had to guess either 80/20 or 75/25. Along with the salt and pepper seasonings the combination of the two probably gives the amazing taste. Although Champ Burger is a locally celebrated lunch gem they make breakfast too! the double decker breakfast sandwiches or breakfast tacos....much better than chain places by leaps and bounds. But please be careful. A double decker sandwich is really filling and will probably kill your lunch if you have a late breakfast. Favorites: - Double Meat Double Cheese - Mushroom Burger w/ Swiss - Double Decker Bacon & Egg w/ Cheese Sandwich - (if you want to satsify that sweet tooth)...Apple Turnover... An now for something completely different, here is my review of breakfast sandwiches and tacos at a burger joint. Breakfast Taco (4/5) Would Champ Burger win in a contest for the most authentic breakfast tacos in town? Probably not. But they would get high marks for the generous amount of fillings and that everything is fresh and cooked to order. And they would lose points on the tortillas. They are just a basic store bought tortilla. The tortillas do taste good, but they are not the same as a freshly made tortilla. The choice of taco fillings include ham, bacon, sausage, bean, potato, and shredded cheese. I like my tacos with the shredded cheese. They serve a red and a green sauce, both made from scratch. The red is a tomato and cilantro based sauce and the green is a jalapeno based sauce. The red is mild and flavorful. The green has good amount of heat, without destroying your taste buds. Breakfast Sandwich (4/5) This is a double decker toasted bread sandwich. It is served with sliced tomatoes, chopped lettuce, egg, cheese, mayo and choice of meat (bacon, sausage patties, sliced ham, or hamburger patty). Two hands are required to hold this big boy sandwich, otherwise the lettuce and tomatoes tend to fall out. From time to time, I ignore my own advice and try to eat it while driving to work. I almost passed it up, because I was expecting a parking lot out in front of a building that had tables, chairs...all in an air conditioned space. This is a walk up burger stand! They announced my number over the loud speaker and I grabbed my little while paper bag of goods. They have a host of hot sauces for your use, right next to the window, but no Tobasco Sauce (sad face here). I got one pf those little, "itty-bitty," plastic salsa containers and put some Louisiana Hot Sauce in it. I was going to drive back to the office, but the lid for the "itty-bitty," plastic salsa container didn't fit, so I just found a bench in the shaded porch area and chowed down right there. The Fried Chicken Sandwich is three chicken tenders on a hamburger bun. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great, it was just a nicely fried chicken sandwich. I'll be back to try the hamburgers. Trying this place for the first time with my co-workers. A lot of my co-workers are raving about this place and wanted to get their fix before they close for the weekend. They open early 7 am and close early 4:30 pm. Down side they only take cash! NO splitting of checks! I was worried to order a burger because of the reviews on here about the patty being thin. However I am super glad that I only got a single patty because with the thick strips of bacon and toppings. It made this burger very hearty! I am content. The staff was friendly and patient with us as we weren't too sure of the wording to order or the protocol as there were two windows.
