Without a doubt the best Thai restaurant in Rhode Island, and maybe the best in New England. And the owner Peter, who is also the server, is the nicest guy you will ever meet. Champa is literally a mom and pop business - the couple are the only staff at the restaurant!! Inevitably, they seem a bit overwhelmed and have a hard time keeping up with demand (because people are finding out their food is really good). If people com here, they should have some patience until they are able to staff up a bit. When we arrived, we had to wait 5 minutes just to get seated, and 10 minutes to place an order. Luckily, the food arrived pretty quickly after that. While you wait, you may end up building a fun sense of camaraderie with the other patrons, some who are regulars and say "this is still worth it!" We got the Khao Soi and the Champa stir fry. We enjoyed our food. We thought the Champa, although a tasty chicken/onion/bell pepper stir fry, was a little basic and lacked any distinctive flavors. The Khao Soi was massive and you get a huge portion of turmeric-y, coconut-y, ginger-y noodle soup goodness. I thought it was a touch too thick and could've also been spicier or strongly flavored. It is the best chicken satay I have ever had, with a slight sweetness from the coconut, down to the light peanut dipping sauce. This was my first time having mango curry and it did not disappoint. It was both sweet and savory, a lot of vegetables and a lot of chicken. Champa has become one of my favorite go-to restaurants in Providence. The Khao Soi is so comforting (it's this creamy coconut-based noodle soup) and I could eat it every day. The owner in fact loves it so much that he eats it every night before he goes home! The papaya salad is so good and crunchy and fresh with all that yummy fish sauce. The sticky rice that the papaya salad comes with is so warm and delicious and comes in this cute woven basket. I've tried other dishes too - Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice dishes were pretty standard and good. The star is the Khao Soi though! Please do yourself a favor and order this. The mango sticky rice comes with pandan sticky rice and coconut milk, a very delightful last part of the meal if you're looking for dessert. Service and vibes are just no frills, straightforward, and homey. Prices are totally reasonable for such large portions! You won't be disappointed by Champa! read more

This is probably shooting up to the top Thai/Laotian restaurant I've been to in Providence! It's a very small, intimate location as there are only about six or seven tables, so be forewarned that getting seated may be a nontrivial matter on the busiest weekend days. I got the seafood basil dish, which had really fresh squid and shrimp! The spice level was perfect to give it a lot of flavor without being overly spicy. All I've had is the Tom Yum and it is probably the best I've had. Sweeter than it is spicy, but still has that tang which soothes your mouth down to your belly. They aren't skimpy with the protein either. Healthy amount of chicken and nice size and perfectly tender shrimp in the respective Tom Yums. I would honestly give 5 stars if not for a less than stellar experience of getting soup an hour from closing that had just a couple mushrooms and no other veggie at all. Every other time there were nice sized quarters of tomato and plenty of mushroom. I plan on getting something else eventually when I actually eat in, but if you like Tom Yum soup, this is the place for you. New mom and pop restaurant in Fox Point serving Thai and Lao food. This was my first time going so I decided to try a few things: the steamed pork dumplings, papaya salad, and khao soi. Of note, their menu has a key at the bottom that tells you how spicy dishes are with * meaning somewhat spicy and *** meaning "extremely spicy. I took this to mean that their dishes are made at a pre-determined spice level, but it turns out you can request the spice level. Pork dumplings were solid and came with a sweet/sour ginger sauce. They were the type of dumpling with a crumblier filling, if that makes a difference to you. The Khao Soi was my favorite. The broth was flavorful, noodles were well-cooked, huge portion of noodles, good amount of filling. It was on the sweeter side compared to other Khao Soi I've had and barely spicy (menu gave it one asterisk but this felt a level below "somewhat spicy"). I was puzzled by the papaya salad. Anyone who likes papaya salad knows it's typically spicy. Peter asked how spicy we wanted it and I asked, isn't it supposed to be spicy because it has two asterisks. He told me yes, but it can be quite spicy and some people can't finish it, so we could get it not spicy if we wanted (this is how I learned that you can request the spice level). I asked to just try it the way it's supposed to be, and he said ok. But when the dish came out, it was not spicy whatsoever! It seemed like either he still submitted the order as "not spicy" or his wife forgot the chilis... When I told him it wasn't spicy at all he said maybe the chilis just weren't as spicy this time, which I don't really believe because I couldn't even find chilis on the plate... Luckily it was still tasty and I want to give him the benefit of the doubt that it was a mistake. Also, comes with sticky rice so you don't have to order it separately, which is nice Overall, good food, nice owners. Street parking is easy and free. I'll be back to try some other dishes and to give them another chance with the papaya salad. read more

Having said that, the dishes we had were outstanding. We had the Khao Soi and Lad nar. Absolutely delicious. I would go back, but I would definitely go early. Came here with my bf looking for authentic Laos food, we ordered the drunken noodles, khao soi, and papaya salad. The place is very very small and can be tight. Thankfully we came right when it opened on a weekday so the place was fairly empty. 4/5 stars. Drunken noodles were very good, very flavorful, only issue was that we both agreed it was too sweet- i countered it by drizzling some sriracha on top. I would order again though. 5/5 stars. Khao soi was delicious, also on the sweeter side so make sure to squeeze the lime on top. It has a yellow curry base which is different than what I'm used to as khao soi but still yummy nonetheless. I would say the dish is what khao poon (red curry noodle soup) would be if it had yellow curry instead. Broth is rich and on the slightly thicker side. 3/5 stars. Papaya salad was where I was rather disappointed. I asked for medium spicy and it came out what I would consider to be barely mild - I assume they are definitely catering to the mostly white people that frequent there. The papaya was not Laotian style as written, but more Thai style- no padaek, mainly fish sauce only. It was also on the sweeter side- which i do like. Wow. Popped in for a late dinner and had an amazing experience. The Pad Thai was the best I've ever had hands down. The Khao Soi looked so good coming out to another table so we ordered it on a whim and it was unbelievable, I am definitely looking forward to exploring more of the Laotian offerings. Went on a Sunday evening, around 7:30. Is on the smaller side, but made it more charming and intimate/cozy. Very quick service, very kind man! We ordered the fried pork dumplings, the chicken satay, beef pho, khao soi with duck, and the mango curry with chicken. I would order any of those dishes again, they were all excellent. Way too much food for three people, but will make great leftovers. Standout dish was the Khao Soi, the duck was tender and the noodles were perfect in the broth, with just the right thickness, consistency, and flavor. I've not had the chance to sit down for a meal at Champa yet. Typically, I would not review a business just based on takeout but everything my partner and I have ordered so far has been exceptional. They do a great job with your standard Thai dishes such as drunken noodles and Pad Thai (some of the best I've had in RI). However, the inclusion of Laotian dishes adds some great options you don't typically have at your standard Thai restaurant. The Khao Soi is a must try. Airy noodles with a sweet/spicy broth plus your choice of protein. I recommend doing it with the duck. The lion city noodles are also great if you're looking for something different than a Pad Thai. The restaurant itself is tiny and appears to be a straight family run operation. If your heart is set on dining in, but you don't want to wait I'd recommend going outside of peak weekend hours. Food is great though and I'll probably be ordering the Kao Soi to go for the 3rd time in a few weeks tonight. read more

The owner was very rude and clearly treats other better than Asian customers. I was on business travel and took my sister out for dinner. I had never encountered poorly run business. I had to ask for rice and was only given one very small cup. There were 3 people at our table and I had to again ask. I did observe that the waiter dropped a dish and the owner yelled out $5.00 at him. Wow... what a cheapskate!
