Chang Fu used to be our go-to for Chinese food. But we haven't been for awhile. We finally returned today. Chang Fu is in a little strip mall near 465 and Michigan Ave. Most people order carry-out and pick-up which is what we usually do, but today we ate at one of the small tables in the restaurant. They have a great inexpensive lunch menu with traditional Chinese options. You can request spice level to any dish. The clerk is no-nonsense efficient and takes our order. The food is prepared fresh and is worth the wait. I had the shrimp with vegetables with spice. The meal was piping hot (just like I like). The shrimp were plump and juicy. The broccoli and carrots were FRESH. There was a lot of fried rice. The meal was good and filling. My husband had the chicken with vegetables. There was a lot of flavorful chicken. His meal was good. The dining room is kind of a mess. There are lots of empty boxes lined-up in the hall stacked deep. The walls could use some paint and the floors need a good cleaning. Chang Fu is located in a busy strip mall right off of 96th and Michigan Rd. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. The food is always consistent and the staff is straight forward. Sometimes it's busy and it's best to call ahead. If you don't call ahead it shouldn't take to long to receive your food. My go to is one of the lunch specials. I tend to lean towards the Shrimp & Garlic meal and instead of the rice that comes with the meal I will get shrimp fried rice (extra charge) and add $1 or $2 worth of extra shrimp. Chang Fu is a pretty run-of-the-mill American Chinese food restaurant. What I can say is that the meals are affordable ($6.95 for lunch specials) and they give large portion sizes. The food itself is nothing special. I tried two of the five lunch specials we got: Curry Chicken w/ Onion - Classic Chinese curry flavor. The onions were crunchy but didn't have the sharp and pungent flavor of raw onion.The chicken was not great - it had a very unpleasant rubbery texture. The closest comparison I can give is an overcooked red snapper. It was possibly tenderized a little too much? Sesame Chicken - Normal (and good) sesame chicken all the way around. Sticky cornstarch thickened sweet and savory sauce. The chicken still retained a small bit of crisp even after being doused with the sauce. We got fried rice with both, which was pretty standard, nothing much to talk about. The strange thing was that we got ordered 5 lunch specials but only got 3 fortune cookies. I got a hugeee order of Chinese food from here for our Chinese New Years celebration. They have some good Americanized Chinese dishes. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the food, but it is worth the price you're paying for it! Recommendations: get steamed dumplings, the fried were a little too dry for my taste. GET the Mushu pork! If you've never had, it's super fun, you wrap up the pork and onions in a little asian pancake with hoisin sauce. This was my favorite authentic dish we got, very delish even warmed up for leftovers! Chicken fried rice (not pictured) was pretty good too. The hot and sour soup was a little thick we watered it down a bit to get the right consistency. Servings are HUGE we have so many leftovers! I had shrimp and broccoli and I also had their egg drop soup; they did not have brown rice but their white rice was delicious and cooked perfectly. What I like most about it is that the sauces were nice and light and yet delicious and I was able to enjoy this meal and still lose weight I lost 5.5 pounds during the month of March getting off some of my COVID-19 weight! Priced low for an order of 6. Beef and Broccoli although I like food with very litte extra things mixed in this was just beef and broccoli with oyster sauce. No carrots, bamboo shoots, waterchest nuts nothing extra. The beef was not at all tender infact a bit chewey. I actually ended up just eating the broccoli. After watching the characters on Big Bang Theory chow down on takeout (time to catch up on missed episodes), we were missing the spot by our old house and were in search for a new takeout place. We were not disappointed. We popped in on a Saturday evening. The menu was very similar to other places (e.g. Hong Kong near Southport) and included our favorites: Mei fun, General Tso, Chicken with Mixed Vegetables, Steamed Dumplings, and Crab Rangoon. We also ordered a pint of Hot and Sour soup (typically the test of a good restaurant). Everything was delicious...not too greasy, not too heavy on the sauce. I am very picky about my chicken (in fact, I typically don't eat it at most Chinese places), but the chicken in the Chicken with Mixed Vegetables was very good. I also managed to nab a few pieces of General Tsao's. It was nicely sweet. The hot and sour soup was very good - the right mix of hot with sour - and I liked their crunchy noodles.
