I've given China King several chances to redeem themselves, but each time I visit my food experience gets worse. I usually order the General TSO's Chicken w/fried rice, but after biting into what I though was a piece of chicken when in fact it as a chunk of sauce coated crusty batter (I think) I was done patronizing China King. Today I thought I'd give them one last chance.....worse decision I could have made. Today I ordered Beef and Broccoli. It looked appealing but that was it. The smell and taste was very off putting. The beef was chewy and slimy. The fried rice was flavor less and greasy. The broccoli was nicely cooked, but it had a weird taste as well. The best thing on the menu was the bottled water. Located next to a liquor store, this place is your standard Chinese food carry out joint. It is very reasonably priced and prepared very quickly. I would recommend calling tour order in and they will have it ready by the time you get there. Like I said they are very fast. You also have the option to dine in, but I must warn you that there are some very interesting characters that come through there. They have tempting lunch specials available and a wide range of menu items to choose from. The staff is very friendly. I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 would have been more accurate. Staff was so friendly I rounded up. I ordered General Tso's chicken with noodles ($2 upcharge) and it was a ton of food and very tasty. While the food isn't anything special to write home about, it's fairly inexpensive, the portions are large, and it's about the only Chinese place that delivers downtown (for a $10-12 minimum order). I'm a fan of their hot and sour soup, and I feel it has healing powers when I feel a cold coming on. The potstickers aren't bad either.. Since I moved here in 2000 China King has been my go to chinese restaurant. Great food, fast service and the owner has the best memory of anyone I have met. She always remembers my weird condiment request. Last night I went for the first time since covid and they have remodeled, both their interior and their menu. Their chinese food dishes are limited now and they have cajun seafood boil as their mainstay. They had a couple of chinese dishes I liked, so I ordered and they have remodeled the recipes as well. I did not care for either my fried dumplings and the beef lomein was just ok. It really is what it is. Standard americanized chinese takeout. Decent prices and decent portions, overly sweetened sauces on spicy dishes. It is food that is ordered when need something cheap or in a hurry. There are worse Chinese restaurants for sure, but this is certainly not in the upper echelon of chinese cuisine even in a lack luster Indianapolis market. Has the exact same menu as various other hole in the wall chinese restaurants. Dont understand why places like this located in a downtown of a major city won't have a separate authentic chinese menu. I understand why not in inner city areas or suburbs where diversity is not as high, but authentic chinese would be sought after if available at a place like this. Three stars fits the bill. Cheap greasy Chinese food. Not saying that's a bad thing - sometimes it's exactly what the doctor ordered. Their sesame chicken and General Tso's chicken are pretty darn good, but be prepared to sit on a couch for a while afterwards to work that one through your gut. The broccoli served with the dish is nice and fresh so you can tone down on the guilt level when you finish the entire order in one sitting. Least favorite part of the food is their rice. Their recent remodel brought about major menu changes. Major focus is on various seafood boils. Many old items are no longer available. She no longer has the items to make Singapore Mei Fun. I know this because I asked. I finally gave in and tried one of said boils. I got the head on shrimp with Cajun seasoning extra spicy. I should preface that both the video menus above the counter and the paper menus now have the tag line exclaiming "Get Your Hands Dirty". I have to say after trying it out, eating with your hands is sorta gross! The saucy is oily, hence ones hands or face is a wee messy too. The flavors were good though. Sorta garlicky, buttery and Cajun spicy. The head on shrimp were large, about 7 in a half pound. Every half pound order comes with two red potatoes and a half size corn on the cob. Good place to go for your basic NY style takeout Chinese. They are quick and reliable, esp if you are picking it up. I do wish they would expand their veggie/tofu options a little and have spring rolls. I've tried asking if they would substitute tofu in for meat in some of the dishes but haven't been successful in doing that... yet at least. We visited this restaurant on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Afternoon specials were available until 4 pm. We ordered the chicken in garlic sause and Kung Pao chicken specials. It comes with steamed rice or pork fried rice. The quantity is good enough for a lunch portion. Taste was just okay. Fried rice was flavorful. We were the only ones to dine in there. We were there for an hour and there was a good number of take out orders. The owner just spoke to the point; no chit chat. The place is old with tattered entry canopy. Great option for cheap, "cheat day" Chinese food. Restaurant is set up as a counter to place your order and pay, and a few small tables. Pros will call ahead to order (most of the time about 10 minutes from placing an order to food ready). Seems like most patrons go for the carry out option. The menu has over a hundred items on it, so it's probably safe to say they'll have whatever you're looking for. About 30 of those options are lunch specials, which come with entree and white or fried rice, to the tune of $5-6 bucks....pretty great for downtown! And on a cold day, a pint of soup will only set you back $2-3 bucks. Crunchies included! General Tso's chicken is the fan favorite among my crowd. Parting thoughts: Credit cards accepted. The only thing I have against them is that they sometimes they put too much sauce on the food which makes it too sweet. Prompt service and good inexpensive food. I stopped in just before noon and was greeted by the manager. He took my order for chicken rice soup and after taking payment, quickly went to the kitchen to prepare my food himself. Preparation was very fast and the soup was ready at the counter steaming hot. I picked a can of soda from the fridge and sat in the small, clean dining area. The soup was tasty with plenty of rice and several large pieces of chicken. The WORST!!! If I could submit ZERO stars I would! I ordered "fried rice" it is yellow rice with peas and carrots, sweet and sour chicken that was little pieces of fried crispy crunchy dough, and shrimp and lobster sauce that was all horrible!The shrimp egg roll has no shrimp just cabbage. The shrimp and lobster sauce was a messy mixture of mushrooms, peas, carrots, shrimp and little mushy white substance that was supposed to be lobster "I think" but looks like what is left over floating in the water after you boil crab legs... and NO SAUCE! Disgusting! The menu does not state anything about mushrooms. I have never seen anything like this in my life and I have traveled all over. I kindly called and spoke to the manager, Demi(or something like that), nicely when I got home to explain that I can not eat this bowl of whatever this was and she was very rude! I told her I can not come back and have to get rid of this so I asked for a refund. I had to order another meal from a different restaurant and pay for delivery, tip, and fee. She was NOT ACCOMMODATING AT ALL. She did not care! This was my first and absolute LAST TIME ordering anything from China King and giving them my money. I don't care if it is free. I saw the good reviews and decided to try this place. General Tao's was great. Tender, good flavor. The egg rolls were amazing as well. I also got some chicken wings. That's where I was disappointed. 12 wings for 11.55 so great deal! They even gave us 13 wings... but they were not good at all. They were very overdone. Call in -- crab rangoons, general tso's chicken, whatever fried rice, an egg roll or two and plenty of duck sauce. Have it delivered or pick it up -- it's close enough to Mass Ave and the usual "Downtown" apt/condo suspects but far enough from major attractions that evening-time parking isn't a problem. Nothing fancy, just the basics. The view from the street isn't much. This take-out joint has a penchant for piling empty boxes and not-so-empty bags out on the curb out front. And the 'no public restrooms' sign might persuade some to forgo the dine-in option, which is made evident by the best described as humble seating options. However, there are some pluses to the place. Orders are prepared in plain sight (it's a very tiny operation, with quite a bit of space devoted to the kitchen area). They're conveniently open most holidays (which is why I'm writing this review). There's nary a concern as to what's lurking in back (i'm guessing it's all out front). As far as I know, no one has taken ill from eating there, and there are plenty of co-workers who have frequented the place over the years. Ordered takeout from here - got sesame chicken with steamed rice and wonton soup. Cost me about $12. First of all, I had enough soup for an army. I absolutely loved everything and was able to munch for 4.5 meals. Like other reviewers say, it is your typical American style Chinese foods, and some of the best of that style I have had. I moved here from Chicago, where ethnic food is plentiful and delicious, in Indianapolis, it may be plentiful, but it is gross. As for China King, everything was super greasy. I had a sechuan beef - not spicy, and so greasy you could see the grease separating from the sauce. I had some flavorless and greasy eggrolls, and the most bizarre pork fried rice ever. It was YELLOW. Fried rice is supposed to be brown! Also there was almost no pork in it. I did not eat more than a few bites of anything, it was such a waste of money.
