There is a motel in the Castleton area that I go to on some weekends as a mini getaway because it is close to a bunch of good eats. Several times I have ordered from Chow Express thinking I might leave enough left over from the dinner to snack a bit for breakfast before I start the next day. Dude!!! I cannot fathom how they absolutely PACK a container with so much food. A typical round plastic takeout dish with the clear cover is filled so full that there is NO air inside the container. It is 100% food. And the outside is spotless. How?!? I am not complaining. In about 40 good years of adulting, I have figured out that a good Chinese/Asian restaurant has to do three things amazingly before you can be assured that the rest of the menu is trustworthy - hot-n-sour soup, eggrolls, and pork-fried rice. If any of those three things suck, just walk away. Hot-n-sour soup = Amazing. Eggrolls = perfection. Pork-fried rice = superb. The smokiness of the dishes, the rich seasoning, the flavorful spice (not particularly the heat spice) are all mouth-wateringly good. You CANNOT go wrong with this place. I am a large man and it takes me THREE sittings to finish a standard entree. Price is perfect. Preparation is fast. This is THE BEST Chinese food in Indy. Believe that!!! read more

This popular little Chinese restaurant off North Shadeland is in a strip mall. We have been ordering carry out for about 2 years. Orders are prepared quickly and vegetables are fresh. This visit we ordered Kung Pao chicken and special ordered Shrimp with vegetables. Both meals came with choice of fried or steamed rice and egg rolls. We only waited 10 minutes for our food. We took our meals home but sometimes we eat in there little restaurant. There are about a dozen tables in their clean dining room. The food was seasoned perfectly with a little heat. The chicken was a little over breaded but the fresh celery and sauce was delicious. The mixed vegetables were crispy and included young snow peas, broccoli, mushrooms arrows and more. The shrimp had a disappointing metallic fishy taste. I was unable to eat the shrimp which was unusual from previous visits. The egg rolls also missed the mark. They were very doughy without much filling. Tonight the food missed the mark for us. Unusual from previous visits. We live on the north side in Carmel, but we only use Chow Express for our carry out Chinese I especially like the broccoli + meat (chicken or beef) combo dinner which comes with steamed or fried rice and an egg roll. The general Tsao's chicken is really good too. It has a come on delayed spiciness. Their soups are also quite nice. My favorite is the dumpling soup. My wife likes egg drop soup. My food is always fresh I noticed that they are always really busy around lunch time and dinner but they always manage to take you order quickly in a rush and the food is usually out in 10 minutes or less and very hot!! Up until today, we have LOVED Chow Express. The food, the quick order response, and the courtesy of the staff. However, today was definitely not good at all. We ordered through Doordash as a pickup order at 11am for a pickup at 12pm. That gave them an hour ahead of time to prepare and make the order. Unfortunately, when arriving at 12pm, they hadn't even started making the order. When we told them about the order, she looked at her phone and said "oh, there it is". I like the food here. I'm not a fan of the cigar smells from the neighboring business, but I always take my food to go. Love Chow Express for lunch during the work week. Yes, it smells like cigars when you first get in the door but you'll get over it. Walk up to order, very fair lunch special prices. Fairly quick to serve your meal. Meal comes ready for a lid so you can take the rest home if need be. The best part about this place: the freshest of Chinese places I've ever been! You know that feeling you get after consuming something really greasy and it's usually Chinese food? Not here. The fried rice is still white! And its delicious. Pretty good for a walk-up type of place. They have most of the standards, but it's not a cookie-cutter identical kind of place. No back-lit pictures. Custom menu, not the red-green "standard". The dining area is tastefully decorated in an understated way. TV up on wall. Track lighting. Serve-yourself plastic utensils/napkins. Order at counter. They will bring your food to you if you dine in. Self serve soda fountain. Dine in food served in foam to-go container. One negative is that when you walk in, you can smell some of the fresh cigars/tobacco (UN-burnt, not smoke), from the cigar/tobacco store two doors down. I stopped noticing it quickly, and it is not smoke, so it didn't bother me. The dine-in tables are a little bit too high, so they may be uncomfortable for some. read more
