I was in the mood for Thai food while in Winslow and decided to hit up Chang Thai on a Saturday night. I tried to call in an order a few times, but no one was answering, so I decided to go in person. When I arrived, I quickly realized they were understaffed and overwhelmed. However, they remained friendly. I ordered the following order to-go: Papaya salad + shrimp Mango sticky rice Thai tea They informed me that it would take 45 minutes and though I was hungry, I had nowhere to be so I decided to wait. The staff checked on me a few times and were very apologetic. The owners also came out and spoke with every customer. The papaya salad was fresh, tasty, and exactly what I wanted! The mango sticky rice was lightly sweetened and wonderful. The thai tea on the other hand, was plenty sweet and creamy. Great spot. Highly recommend! read more

Fried Rice - Thai Basil Chicken: Falls short, due to technique; feels like the rice just came out of a rice warmer rather than refrigerated overnight rice. So everything sort of clumps together. I felt the dish was missing that Drunken Tiger Thai Basil Fish Sauce + Sugar Soy Sauce flavor. Feel the fried rice can be simpler--- leave out the celery stalks, leave out the zucchini, and keep to garlic, basil, Thai bird eye chillis, onions and Pad Kee Mao Sauce. Missing that taste of flame where every rice is coated with the wok char. Pad Thai--- this was an outstanding Pad Thai. Considering we're literally in the middle of nowhere in Winslow AZ, the noodle dish wasn't Sugar Overload, it was light. Had a balanced amount of citrus acid lime, and tasted refreshing. Tom Kha---- this Tom Kha is how I'd imagine a white person would interpret it, lacks lime leaves, lacks sourness, and doesn't keep to its roots, shallots, lemongrass, Thai bird eye peppers, Mushrooms, cilantro and maybe tomatoes....but nothing more. This was almost like a Thai Coconut Vege Soup packaged in a plastic cup sold in some neighborhood in St Paul Minnesota at an Albertsons; I would modify it by cutting out the celery and carrots and maybe squeeze a bit more lime in there if the owners don't have a lime leaf tree. Egg Rolls-- I've made a ton of these back in my restaurant days, along with crab cheese wontons, so as a standalone appetizer this place has pretty decent egg rolls. Thai Ice Tea--- good, Balanced not sweet, light ; recommend. Overall this family restaurant was a good stop between Los Angeles and Route 66 Arizona. Every member of the family were incredibly friendly, couldn't ask for better service, they follow up with you and ask for suggestions to improve the dishes, and any other accommodations adjustments with the ingredients. So next time you know. Let them know. Wil definitely be coming back next time I drive through with my rig. Kudos for running a Thai restaurant so far away from society. read more

Messed up my order then corrected it with a Big box of grease, tasteless sampler. Ordered shrimp fried rice with Extra shrimp, chicken and pork. * did not get extra shrimp. So glad we called for take out before this great Thai restaurant was closing for the night! The woman on the phone was so nice! She answered all my questions and placed the order. My food was waiting when I arrived 20 minutes later. The soup had been overlooked, but they made this for me right away and fast! Price was reasonable. The Panang was delicious. I was super happy with it--creamy, spicy and sweet! My husband liked his Thai beef salad a lot. The best dish though was the house made fried rice! It had a super flavor. What an amazing experience this was eating some of the best food ever! Between the Navajo reservation and a corner somewhere in Winslow Arizona sits Chang Thai. The taste is on another level. The parking is more than ample on a gravel lot right in front of Chang Thai. I ordered Golden Flower -Rangoon. There is none better in all the world according to my experience and estimation. It had a white crab sauce inside a beautifully made fried crust and it is worth a trip to experience. For entree I chose salmon with vegetables. The salmon was simply as good as it can ever be. I could not believe how great this food is way out on the outskirts of Winslow. The restaurant is full of items and pictures of Thailand making this an actual cultural experience. The service was good and the people were very friendly. My server noticed I was really thirsty when I asked for a water refill and she brought me two waters instead of just one refill. Ordered Pad Thai with Chicken and House Fried Rice with Chicken and Shrimp, the total was around $48...business must be slow around these parts. I get how the additional cost came about because it's more expensive to add $5 shrimp versus $3 chicken plus container fees. The rice was absolutely trash, too soft and barely any flavor even though I asked for spice. The pad Thai was okay, the up charge must equate to a $1 per shrimp because there was barely any proteins on the plates, mainly rice and rice noodles. I highly recommend this place if you like Thai food. I lived in northern Thailand for 5 years, and this is the best Thai food I've found in Northern Arizona. It is traditional, and the flavors and herbs are fresh. In conversation with the very sweet owner, Mas, she said she goes to Phoenix 2 to 3 times a week to get fresh ingredients. Don't miss this stop I-40 drivers! We stopped in today based on the yelp reviews and this place does not miss. We enjoyed of the lunch specials and they were the perfect portions with a salad or soup. After the first few bites, we were sharing Chang Thai with our friends and family who travel this way frequently. I had the yellow curry that I swear is the nectar of the gods! My partner had the spicy stir fried cashews that was spiced perfectly for my heat loving guy. My more selective eaters had the house fried rice and did not complain one bit about their dish. The restaurant is neat and clean with comfy seating. The owners are sweet and take great care in preparing tasty dishes. We have driven past the signs for this Thai restaurant on the I-40 and never had the chance to stop and try it out. Today we decided to call in a take out order and pick it up to take home. Quick and easy to order by phone and our food was ready within 15-minutes! The inside of the restaurant is very clean and all employees were very pleasant! I ordered the chicken pad Thai (spice level 1) and my boyfriend had the beef drunken noodles (spice level 3). We shared the Chang Thai Sampler platter with spring rolls, wontons, and gyoza. Everything was piping hot and delicious! Next time I'm going to get spice level 2 to add more spice. My boyfriend said spice level 3 was perfect! My family & I just enjoyed a wonderful meal from Chang Thai in Winslow, AZ. This place is very clean with a nice atmosphere! The food is DELICIOUS, and the staff are very friendly! It makes no sense that this place is this good. Flagstaff has a zillion Thai restaurants in nice locations all serving the same so-so Americanized slop, and then Winslow has way better food where the road turns to gravel and meets a truck stop construction site? In any case, this is as far as I know the only place in Northern AZ with Isaan (Northern Thai) or Lao specialties. I had the "pork jerky," which was seasoned perfectly and wonderfully tender. Sauce was appropriately spicy for a 3/5, and the sticky rice was cooked perfectly. Only complaint I could make was that the sticky rice was not as aromatic as I'd like, and the Thai iced tea less sweet than usual, but some of that may have been my sinuses throwing a fit from the elevation change. read more

Had noticed Chang Thai Restaurant as we pulled off freeway, heading west. We checked reviews on Yelp and they averaged 4.8 for 29 reviews! It peaked our interest! After hotel check-in, we headed over. Inside is a pleasant surprise! Decor is tasteful and everything is impeccably clean. Be sure to look at the display w the jeweled crowns! You are warmly greeted, seated and drink order taken and delivered immediately. If you are new to Thai food, the hostess carefully explains the menu to help you make your order. All food is freshly made! We choose the Sampler Appetizer to start! Oh! BE SURE to order this! It's beyond delicious. The dipping sauces were perfect and crab that is melt in your mouth! We shared an order. (As I'm writing this, am craving it again!) For my entree, I ordered the Yellow Curry w Chicken. Arrived piping hot w chicken, fresh potatoes, broccoli, carrots and onions. Very good! My husband's favorite is Shrimp Fried Rice w a #5 HEAT! That means hot pepper sauce added that is hot...hot! He said his dish equaled the "best he'd ever eaten at his fav Thai restaurant in Phx!" He loved it! Surprisingly delicious! Waitress was nice, and another kind lady came up to ensure we were all enjoying our meals. Pretty prompt service and the flavor in everything was great, with a variety of orders at our table with special dietary needs. We made a to-go order over the phone, ran to the store and when we got to Chang Thai, our order was all ready for us. Everything was packed up nicely, nothing spilt on the drive home. The employees that met us at the counter were very friendly and helpful. We ordered a green curry, panang curry, drunken noodles, another dish and naan bread. Everything was amazing! We've needed a Thai place in Winslow for a long time, and hopefully this place stays around because we'll be back. The naan bread was exceptional.
