If Chang Thong merely had superb ramen, or merely had fantastic pho, it would still be notable. To do both well -- on top of a menu of equally stellar Thai noodle and rice dishes -- is unique. This is quickly rocketing up toward the top of my list of favorite local restaurants. Attention to detail is visible throughout the menu, including the drinks - I once came in near opening time for lunch and was told I couldn't get a Boba tea as they had not yet cooked the boba for the day. A few times I've visited, they have been out of various dishes and I've had to retreat to my second choice, but its hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. read more

We're picky about our Japanese food and Chang Thong delivered. We had 2 different kinds of ramen broth and both were delicious, as were the other ingredients. This was one of the worst meals we have ever had. Absolutely NO FLAVOR, and really really oily. I mean NO FLAVOR. There was suppose to be onions and carrots in my Thai Chow Mein and there were a few, but everything was extremly bland. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Had the pleasure of eating here for dinner on their 10th day open! My partner got Pho and I got Ramen. Both of us were impressed by the silky and rich broths and the large portion sizes. I can't say enough about this Thai food and business owner! We had a last minute change of venue for an intimate family wedding in our home. We needed food brought in and called Chang Thong. At first they said they had no driver, but when we explained the situation, the owner brought in our order on a Sunday afternoon. Not only was the food plentiful and delicious, it was presented beautifully so we could delight in the whole experience! Food was great! Our party all got variations of ramen, the noodles were delicious and chewy in a nice rich broth. The kids loved getting boba drinks and we left with some of their signature chili oil they had for retail sale. The service was great, glad to have them in our community! We ordered a couple different Ramen Bowls and Thai fried egg rolls. Basic. To Go. Walking in, folks obviously enjoying their food. A professional and welcoming fellow confirmed that my order was,in fact ready and promptly brought me my food. Our ramen bowls were incredible and the fried egg rolls were done perfectly. After our second visit, I can confirm that I was not in some sort of Pho-induced state of nirvana: you really can get phenomenally delicious Pho without heading back down to the bay... On second thought, I can confirm I WAS (and am) in a Pho-induced hazy state of tranquility, peace and joy (pronounced fu-vana). Of course, pho starts with the broth and you'll know as you walk in the door the foundation is solid. The bo vien ("meatballs") are hands-down the best I've ever had - from the bean sprouts to the brisket the ingredients in the pho are high quality, fresh and a cut or two above what you get at the usual places you may frequent if you live in the Bay or So Cal. This is home-made goodness through and through and you'll see families, local high school kids and old farts like me coming in for some of the care that is put into the food they put on the table and to soak up some of the Chill vibe that hits you by the time you've found your seat. Today, we tried the chicken satay and I was utterly gobsmacked by the peanut sauce (hand-made in house and may be habit forming). And now I'm to understand that they are working on dim sum offerings for the not-too-distant future? And I haven't even tried the Ramen yet... Good thing they have easy parking in back, I'm going to be here often. The owner and his wife have created a wonderful oasis here in Grass Valley and it's well worth stopping in if you're on way through, or even making a trip up (or down) the hill! The food is fantastic! I was a little skeptical with the fusion aspect but they do it all well, and I'm so glad to have excellent ramen AND pho in our town now. I've been 3 times and got takeout once, and have tried ramen, pho, pineapple fried rice, and lots of the small plates -- literally everything is spot on. Extremely slow and unorganized service. I've been twice now once eating inside and once for take out. The take out was the final straw. I called and placed an order and was told 15 minutes. I then show up 20 minutes later and not even a hello or be with you a in minute when I walked in. The decor is funky and they have a small speaker right at the counter playing loud elevator music. The male worker with rude customer service then quickly takes my credit card to ring me up. He then comes back and tells me the food hasn't even been started yet. So here I am 30 minutes into this wait with still no food. So I asked for a refund on my credit card. Prepare yourself for even longer waits when using a credit card as they blame it on slow wifi service. Place is horribly staffed with horrible customer service to match. You are greeted warmly as you enter and offered a table. It is open and light and you can see into the kitchen so you know it's clean. Sadly that's where the good ended. I had miso ramen with pork belly that was so bland and flavorless I couldn't even eat it. The Joe Pru might be good if it were warm but it had cooled enough to start to set. Been in Grass Valley for a couple days and wished for a ramen soup on a cold evening. The local friends said there is no ramen place in town. My husband did not believe it and looked on Yelp and found Chang Thong. Only 8 reviews, it was not encouraging, but we decided to give it a try and we did not regret. We had been impressed by the service, warm ambiance and welcoming staff. To our surprise the menu was short and learned that everything is homemade, from scratch, with no MSG or preservatives. We ordered a few appetizers and 4 different types of ramen. Everything was absolutely delicious, tasted authentic, and you could tell it was fresh and homemade. The taro and matcha drinks were also amazing, naturally sweetened with no added sugar. And the blue sticky rice with mango was the cherry on the top. Our son who has never eaten sticky rice was attracted by the blue color and almost finished one order. We had a great time, amazing food, and the staff was super attentive and friendly. The restaurant has been opened for 2 months and the owner is the chef. We totally recommend this place if you are in Grass Valley. read more
