Our third time here. After two Yelp events, we ventured into this popular ramen shop for a bluefin dinner theater dubbed "The Tuna Cutting Show - a special culinary experience for the senses". House was packed as the diners were escorted for a photo with the fresh bluefin tuna flown-in from the Baja peninsula. Umami Ramen was transformed into a festive venue. After brief intros, the master chef proceeded in slicing the 100lb+ fish into consumption sized portions. Starters served were edamame, special miso soup, mini-grilled pork chasu bun and chawanmushi while the guests watch the fish transform from a giant catch into prized, melt-in-your-mouth cuts. House made sauces of ponzu, lemon and freshly grated wasabi were at the table for dipping the expressions of sashimi, nigiri (sushi), temaki (handroll) and aburi (seared). The customers fasted on all-you-can-eat slices of akami (lean), chutoro (medium-fatty) and otoro (fatty belly). To end this fishy meal, we got a very appropriate dessert of Yuzu Calpico Jelly & Mango Ice Cream. While in Folsom on Friday, my friend, daughter and I wanted to check out this Umami Ramen - which was named one of the top places to eat in Sacramento! We arrived around 5pm, ordered at the counter and found a table in the back. I loved seeing all of the mystery boxes, trinkets and snacks available for purchase! They also offered a nice drink selection and even ice creams - we purchased one of the way out! I loved the inside - there were lights strung throughout the ceiling and even some greenery as well - the bathroom even had fun murals painted throughout like Dragon Ball Z and One Piece! We ordered Truffle Garlic Edamame, Pan Fried Gyoza, Black Garlic Tonkotsu, Spicy Tonkotsu and a side of thick noodles and broth for my daughter! Everything was fresh and tasty! My only compliant was that I thought my Black Garlic Tonkotsu could have used some spice - that was my error though! The noodles were nice and chewy, the pork was tender and the jammy egg was perfect! We left full and satisfied! Chashu Don is great but they consistently run out of rice. I have had online orders cancelled due to them not having rice and I have been to the store multiple times and they seem to have this mysterious rice issue well before store close. Not sure if they want to go home early or want to conserve rice but it's become such a problem that we even joke about how often they don't have rice. We even ordered online 40 mins before close and joked that we would only write a negative review if they mysteriously ran out of rice again and cancelled the order. Umami Ramen is my favorite spot for ramen in the Sacramento area. I'm down to try other spots, but so far the Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen from Umami Ramen is my gold standard. The Folsom location is their original location, and is a little tucked away and hidden, but has plenty of parking in the lot. Inside it's super cute and has a good amount of tables for dine in as well as a little area to browse for snacks, treats, trinkets, and drinks. They offer ramen, rice bowls, appetizers, onigiri, and if you're lucky enough to be there when they're offering sushi you'll definitely want to try it. One of the things I love is how flavorful and consistent their house made broths are. They are so good and the addition of high quality toppings makes for an amazing meal. While I tend to order the ramen every time the other dishes are also delicious. The karaage chicken is an amazing appetizer (and perfect with the ramen) and their rice bowls and curry are great. Again, if they have sushi available it's also such a great option. The team here is so friendly and, while they have kiosks to place your order, the team can help with your order and they always make sure I have plenty of water when I dine in. This is one of my favorite ramen restaurants ever. You order at the kiosk, take a number, and sit down. The servers will then bring you water and food. I got the black garlic tonkotsu. It is so good! The broth is perfectly seasoned, and creamy. I like to get the thick noodles for more chewy texture. It comes with an egg, chashu pork, scallion, and bamboo. Basically everything I usually get in a ramen bowl. I finished everything from noodles, toppings, and soup, that's how delicious it is! We were in the area looking for ramen and I came across an old Reddit post that said Umami was the best in the area. We decided to take a chance and drove 25-30 minutes from downtown Sac and so happy we did because this place was awesome! Ordering using the kiosk is nice and easy. We had one Spicy Tonkotsu and one Spicy Paitan so we could try out both the pork and chicken broths. We also ordered the pepper karaage. The karaage was good - the chicken was really tender and juicy. Since they were tossed in a sauce, they weren't the most crispy, but I think that's to be expected. Still, they were pretty tasty. The sauce was a bit sweet, which we both didn't like as much so we'd probably stick with the regular karaage next time. Both broths were super rich, creamy, and flavor-packed. The spice level was good - decent heat, but not overpowering. Their default noodles are thinner, which offers some pros - the soup really sticks to them, which is great. The downside is the texture - these still had a good bite, but not really a good chew like you'd get with a thicker noodle. We'll probably try the thicker noodles next time. Overall, the broth here is next level. It is almost certainly one of the best broths we've had in the Sacramento area and we would absolutely drive the 30 minutes again to grab another bowl! read more

Such a cute and fun ambience. Love the little shop of Japanese snacks. The fried chicken bowl was huge and delicious although so hot it took a bit to cool down. They make their own rice triangles! Came here at the award for being a top 10 ramen spot in CA. The katsu don was good, but I really liked the addition of actual hearty chunks of potato. Most restaurants don't bother. My issue was with the ramen, the chashu was so dry. I heard other reviewers say the same thing but it's the first time I've had chashu like this. Updated review. Food - phenomenal as always. Great Tori paitan and karaage. I'm generously giving a 5 because I've always had good experiences. However. The new staff or newer staff that was hired needs to be trained on customer service and restaurant etiquette. I arrived sometime around 145pm today. Ordered and got my food around 206 (I took a photo and it has a time log). The server came by once after the food was handed out to refill water and then never again. Around 230 I see a staff flip the tag on the door assuming it's cause they are closing for their pm shift. At 235pm the server came to me and said "do you need a to go box?" I said no. And then he asked to take a few plates since I was nearing done. After that he never came back. Here's the problem. I understand you close at 230pm. However professionally it is more appropriate to come by close to closing time to let customers know "we're closing in 5 min. Is there anything I can help you with?" Or even come around then and calmly ask about the food and if I need to go box. The way he did it showed absolutely no care and more along the lines of "hurry up. We're trying to close" extremely rude to try and rush customers in that manner. I hope the owner/manager sees this and trains their staff. read more

The first sip of broth either makes or breaks your experience. It totally made my day. You can really taste the milky pork flavor. The chashu was tender and had a nice subtle char. I dropped in on a lazy weekend just before noon. I have not been back here in a while. .Right when I stepped in, I noticed the interior setup changed quite a bit. The kitschiness of the anime, trinkets, Japanese snack food, claw game machine, and toy collectible baubles for purchase is abundant. Visual sensory overload. All of that was not here the last time I dined here. I had to take a quick glance around to make sure I was in the right place. Yup, I was in Umami Ramen. After I weaved past folks gawking at the snacks and stuff, I made it to the self ordering kiosks. There was no human person taking orders, so I used the kiosk. I would have preferred the human interaction to ask questions. I had to read the kiosk board a few times regarding the ramen topping options, it is mark options it if you do not want it versus want it. After I ordered my food and took my table number sign, I meandered around gawking at all their merch. Neat stuff that I want and of course do not need. Besides the items near the front door, they have more merch on the back wall near the restroom. Plus they have snacks on the merch shelf, Japanese ice cream in the cooler by the front door, and a cold case of Japanese sodas and juices. My order of black garlic tonkatsu ramen took a little bit over 20 minutes after ordering. The big, piping hot bowl was set in front of me. It looked gorgeous, picture perfect. The egg was cooked with the yolk having a nice, classic jammy consistency and served cold in the hot broth as it should be. The pork slices were seared, that added more flavor to it. The broth was more flavorful than I remembered. Deep umami flavor. Yum. Slurp-luscious. But it hit me hard a few hours later. I have MSG food intolerance. I found out later the broth had MSG. I got a migraine and tummy ache. My issue, not theirs. I can handle MSG in small quantities. I am in that statistical 1% of the population having MSG intolerance. Lucky me. So if I eat significant amounts, I get a migraine and other not so fun symptoms depending on the quantity consumed. I did not have this problem before eating here. But it is not uncommon for ramen places to use MSG. read more
