The Food While planning for a Lake Tahoe trip, my wife and I discovered this niche stop along the way that is Moon's Korean Kitchen. We made a pit stop, and ordered their Kimchi Spam Rice Bowl, along with Pork Rib Soybean Paste Soup. The order also came with banchan, side dishes with cucumber, radish, and kimchi. The Kimchi Spam Rice Bowl had a good mix of ingredients and was delicious. The Pork Rib Soybean Paste Soup was flavorful and has a good kick to it. There are other dishes on the menu that look interesting, but perhaps next time. The Miscellaneous The Moon's Korean Kitchen is along US-50, about midway between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe. You can miss it if you zoom through the highway. The restaurant is not super big per say, but there's a decent amount of seating for its size. During the time we went, it seemed like the owner was soloing the entire place. But the food came at a reasonable time. The restaurant doesn't have an extensive menu, but it's straightforward with variety. There are appetizers with barbeque, stews, noodles, amongst others. Though it is not a place one would visit often, they do have yummy food. Would recommend making the pit stop if you are around the area. read more

This gem of a spot is worth the visit! It's just Mr. Moon working by himself so be prepared to wait, especially during rush hours. He's understanding and will cancel the order if you can't afford to wait. I went two weekends in a row on two different ski trips. The first time we were at the end of a big lunch rush and there was traffic so we decided to just sit and wait. The wait was loong like over an hour and a half BUT worth it! super filling and tasty. Food is actually spicy so be careful of which spice level you choose. Despite the wait, we decided to return a week later, and luckily the second time there was no wait. We split the kimchi fried rice, pork rib bean paste stew, tteokbokki, and pork bulgogi. Huge portions, all very good. My favorite is the pork rib bean paste stew. Comes with rice and banchan. Went here after a long day of skiing, and this was the best decision for food we could have made. We ordered spicy kimchi spam fried rice, and the pork bulgogi, and, while we wished there was a bit more spam in the fried rice, it was absolutely delicious. Be prepared to wait a little bit if you're ordering to go simply because they're short staffed and don't have as many cooktops. Every time I drive through 50 I always noticed this little joint and today we decided to try since we were already fueling up next door and let me tell you!!! I'm angry. I'm so angry. It's been a few days since I came here. I hadn't had a meal at all that day on my long drive including stops due to exceedingly long lines or just being forgotten about and then I got here. And honestly I cannot blame the hunger for why this is the best Korean food I have ever had--including all the Ktown restaurants in LA It's not much to look at outside, not fancy, easy to pass (unless you're starving, have to pee, and love Asian food) and wow I'm glad I stopped. I ordered the pork bulgogi and I stopped breathing for a moment when I took my first bite of kimchi...hard to find a truly perfect kimchi. This was the best kimchi I ever have had. I had to decline more because I already knew I was going to need a box. The pork bulgogi I did spice level two and it was just spicy enough for me. Why am I angry after a fantastic (and peaceful with the calm music and it being empty while I was then) meal? Because I live 7 hours away. 7 hours. Decided to give this spot a try on our way to Sacramento from Lake Tahoe. The place was small but nicely decorated. The restaurant must be run by one man because he was working really hard cooking, doing dishes and running food. They had a touch screen ordering system that I wasn't too fond of but it worked in the end. We really enjoyed coming here from Lake Tahoe. It's a bit of a drive from Lake Tahoe but the small no frills all taste was definitely worth it. The restaurant has been running for three months and Mr. Moon is a one man show! From speaking to him, he has over 20 years of experience in the restaurant business and he finally made his dream of owning a restaurant a reality. I'm really rooting for him to succeed with this restaurant because he's one of the good guys. Why? The previous restaurant had a no bathroom unless you're a customer policy but Moon has changed that. His reasoning is they are travel quite far to get to Tahoe and people need to go. He also takes care of the neighborhood cats when the owner is out of town. Just a good dude who can cook a mean Korean dish. You have to root for that. We will visit here every time we visit Tahoe. Hopefully his restaurant will gain a lot of traction! read more

If you want an excellent, homecooked ramen meal that is obviously made with love, eat at Moon's! If you go there during business hours and the door is locked, that's because he's too busy. This is a one man operation and I have nothing but the greatest respect for this Korean transplant who came here from Arizona last year to make a living in what is likely one of the very hardest places to operate a restaurant profitably. We stopped there on 7/6/24 at 6:45 pm for dinner since reviews were awesome. Pretty authentic, 1 man's kitchen. Restaurant had few people around and inside looked empty. Seems like 1 customer in front on me. I order 2 plates from the entrance computer (only option, the chef is cooking). It took 85 to 90minutes to get our plates. Seems like a group of 8 had ordered before me. And maybe 2-3 more clients. Food was great. No complaints there, for sure. But that made a dents in my travel schedule back to the Bay for sure. Im not stressed out about this, probably I got unlucky, but ask (use the bell) Moon if he has a lot of orders in queue. read more

We skipped breakfast to eat good for this 50 min detour we took for nothing. Says they are open everywhere but were clearly closed.

I love this place. We were on our way back home from Lake Tahoe and was craving some ramen for lunch.  We drove past this little place and noticed the "ramen" flag.  We turned back around and parked.  To our surprise, it was open on Christmas Day!  It is a very small place. The owner was the only one working and even though it was only him, we didn't wait very long for our food to come out. We ordered tteokboki for appetizer. It is a rice cake dish that had slices of fishcake, an egg, and scallions in a spicy sauce. We added cheese to it.  Omg, it was amazing.  The rice cake texture was nice and chewy.  The broth was just the right spice level and the cheese mixed into it just made it taste so good.  I complimented the cook and he said, "yeah, of course, I made it!" Lol. We also ordered a pork rib ramen as well as the army stew.  The noodles we're perfect.  They each came in a nice little pot.  The army stew had little pieces of spam, beef, egg & veggies in a beef stew.  It comes spicy but you are able to request it to be a little less.  Very tasty. The pork rib ramen was spicy and the egg was mixed in.  The pork fell off the rib which was nice.  Both ramens were perfect on a somewhat cold day. The last thing we ordered was the shrimp fried rice.  It came with a side of egg drop soup.  The fried rice was very flavorful and has a lot of veggies in it.  I really like when there's a good mix of veggies to rice.  It also had a good amount of shrimp in it too and it wasn't over cooked.  The fried egg on top was perfect with the crispy edges and a good amount of yolk still.  Gotta have that satisfying egg yolk break with the fork, ya know?! The unfortunate thing is that even though there is a gas station next to it where people can use the restroom and though it says only paying customers can use the restroom here, people kept stopping in and crowding the place.  It was quite annoying.  The owner even had to come out of the kitchen to tell everyone not ordering to leave. I wish this was close by because honestly, it would be a place we would go to often when craving the food.  But, we will have to stop by again when we are going to or coming from Tahoe again. read more

The food here is fantastic--especially impressive given it's a one-person operation. Because of that, I recommend showing patience and respect for the effort and quality. The dishes were a bit spicy for my taste, and there isn't an obvious option to request milder heat, so be prepared if you prefer less spice. Still, I'd happily return, though I'd keep my expectations realistic. The building itself is older, which can make the dining area feel a bit drafty. But overall, it's wonderful that a place like this exists, and I'm grateful for the unique experience and flavor it provides. read more

Best Korean food I've ever had! So tasty and delicious, will definitely stop by again!

This place was great for a quick bite after hiking in desolation forest! Initially walking in, it's a little awkward as you're greeted with a tablet to order on. There aren't any modifications that can be made directly in the iPad, but the owners (I'm assuming) are very kind and accommodating and help with the order process and modifications if needed. We ordered the tofu soup vegan (no egg), there was an option for spicy or no spicy and the spicy was hot (so be aware). The shrimp fried rice was delicious but the shrimp weren't anything special. There is a nice little outside area where we were able to bring our dog. Overall we'd return for the quick service and good food. read more

If you're on your way to Tahoe or coming back from Tahoe, this place is a must. Not only is the service AMAZING, but so is the food. I got the seafood ramen, and it hit the spot. It didn't taste like your typical boring store bought ramen. Something about it was different and it was so good. The noodles were cooked to perfection, still had a nice chew. My boyfriend got the Spicy Pork Stirfry and it was a big portion with a great meat/veggie ratio. Well rounded meal! The owner was super sweet and made our experience unforgettable. Absolutely stop here on your way to Tahoe or back!! Or if you're like us and live locally, come here asap. This is one of the best restaurants in the county. Such an amazing experience overall. We ordered the pork ribs and stew (also with pork ribs) and shared both. The spice level was perfect and the meat was as tender as it gets. The sundubu broth was the best I've ever had. All of the complex flavors, perfect fermentations, spices and aromatics... just excellent. We ate every last bite and left feeling stuffed and talked about the food on our whole drive home. Service was wonderful, too. Moon is friendly and attentive and it felt like going to someone's house and having a home cooked meal. I could not be happier. I only wish I took some photos of our food, but I guess I'll just have to go back :) read more
