We used to like this restaurant. We went last night with a family of four. Three people got their order and had been eating for eighteen minutes. I've tried to ask the waitress twice or three times where my order was since it was not supposed to take that long and I was concerned if she forgot my order. She just ignored my asking without responding to me. After 20 mins since other three people almost finished their meals and we needed to go to a movie, I waved to the male waiter or manager looking guy again, saying since it took so long I have not got my order, I want to cancel my order. By this time, the waiter just came out with my food from the kitchen, the male waiter just forcefully or even upsettingly saying "cancel it" and sent him back to kitchen without asking me if I still want it. Without explanation or apologizing to us about why the dish took so long . We felt both the waiter and waitress were so rude and ignorant! I left empty stomach without dinner and still paid 14% tips. Very happy to find this tasty Thai place. Online ordering for pick up was easy. There is no inside dining currently, but the decor was nice. I got a little spicy beef drunken noodles, which was delicious and well made with a lot of meat. The noodles seemed to be cooked perfectly so they didn't stick or congeal into blobs. This place is one of my favorite Thai places. Not too many people know about this place so it's not too crowded yet. It's really a gem of a place. The number one thing about this place is the decor. You won't find a better decorated place that makes you feel like you're at a nice home. It's full of nice colors, dolls, stuffed animals, statues, and plants which makes you feel like you're at your favorite aunts living room. On top of that the staff is wonderful and the food is really delicious! I like their duck roll appetizer, drunken noodles with sliced beef, and all their curries. I'm also a fan of their kao soi. Everything is really tasty so you can't really go wrong with what your order. Drinks are also really good. I recommend Thai Iced tea or the Coffee iced tea. Ohh, usually I don't add this too my reviews but I had to say their bathrooms are spotlessly clean. You got to love clean bathrooms! I don't know why we never tried this restaurant before. After finally getting here , I wish we had gone sooner! In fact, I think it's one of the better local Thai restaurants! We got here on a Sunday night a little after 5 p.m. At the time, there was only one occupied table. We were greeted by Benny who also was our waitress. She is low key, friendly and efficient. One thing that drew me here is that they have extensive vegan/vegetarian offerings---far more than some Thai places. Since we generally eat vegan on Sunday nights, finding a place with a good variety of offerings is a plus. We started our meals with a bowl of soup. I had bean curd soup---something that I've never seen before on a Thai menu. This was a tasty soup with a mild, albeit a bit salty, broth with plenty of cubed tofu plus seaweed and green onions. My husband had a bowl of lemongrass soup with vegetables. Despite the menu description, Benny called it "Tom Yum soup" and it certainly looked like Tom Yum. My husband really enjoyed his soup. The broth was spicy and the stock was plentiful with button mushrooms, baby corn, cabbage, snow peas and carrots. I asked my husband if this version of the soup reminded him of any he's had at another Thai restaurant. He said it reminded him of the soup at Duangrat's because it had the same spice level and flavor. For my main course, I had drunken noodles with vegetables and my husband had mixed vegetables. Both our dishes had generous portions of snow peas, button mushrooms, carrots, baby corn, broccoli and cabbage. The drunken noodles were spicy but not so spicy that I was guzzling water. To me, they had just enough spice. The mixed vegetables were mildly flavored and came with a bowl of rice. The restaurant has a full bar and does offer up some mixed drinks. My husband had a Singha beer while I had a glass of water. We liked the decor which was very modern and sleek with nice lighting. We noticed that much of their business was take out. However, while our meal progressed, a few more people came to dine in. Overall, we were quite pleased with our meals---and quite full! Having been to Tara Thai in Worldgate, we both agree that Chao Phra Ya is the better of the 2 places and has a more extensive vegan/vegetarian menu. We certainly will be back for more. Honey and I ordered from these fine folks twice now and I can't say enough good things about them. The seasonal soft shell crab!! My Lord!! Do you know how rare it is for crispy fried things to be perfect on delivery? I was stunned at how good the crab was. Unless you're sadly allergic, just do yourself a favor and order this. Honey uttered an aria about how large and meaty the crabs were. The whole grilled squid is a standout as well, made just right, tender and not rubbery, accompanied by two little dipping sauces. Also addictively tasty: the duck roti roll. Savory and rich. The perfect little mouthful to get you started. In the veggie department, the eggplant. Wow! So soft and tender and flavorful that I could barely put down my spoon. Like most Thai joints, this place is perfect if you are living gluten free or are a serious vegetarian/pescatarian. Vegans can do all right here as well; I counted about 8 items that either were naturally vegan or could easily be made vegan. (Did I already mention how great that eggplant was?) I can't say anything about the actual restaurant. However it's located under the clock tower in Herndon, so there's plenty of parking and it ought to be pretty good for accessibility. read more

I really love it when small business like restaurants remember you. This happened to me as I was walking near my office building and got hailed by this nice lady who asked how I was and when i was going to come back to Chao Phra Ya. So go back I did today to the Thai restaurant where everyone seems to know the guests and wow what a treat. Food has always been good, I had the green Curry chicken and ate every grain of food on my plate and shoe the Tom Yum soup. Lunch specials are very reasonable and service is quick. My daughter had and itchy throat after eating panang beef within a few minutes. She turned red and had red spots around her mouth. This has been a hidden gem in the Village Center shopping area! I'm always on the lookout for great Thai places, and it's great to have found one so close by. They offer take out and currently have limited indoor dining due to Covid mandates. I like my food on the spicy side and this establishment does not disappoint. So far we've tried the Ka Prow Fried Rice with chicken, Pad kra prow with chicken, and drunken noodles with beef. The portions were generous, and it wasn't so spicy that you couldn't taste anything else - it was the perfect amount. The hosts were great about periodically checking up on us, making sure the waters in our glasses were full, and making sure that everything was good with our food. (Which was absolutely amazing!) We will be coming back here for more and recommending to friends that share a love of good food! read more

First of all, the service was so slow! We got here late for lunch and we were one of the only two tables, and it took 20 minutes for them to take the order. When they served the spring rolls, they served one short, we had to wait for another 15 minutes. Then waited a long time for our orders to come out. After we finished, we had to wait a little while for them to come over. A quick lunch turned to be one and a half hour long lunch. When we got our bills, they added 17% tip (17% tip for EXTRA slow service??). When I asked the waitress about it, she said she could remove it. When the final receipt was given to me, not only they did not remove the 17% charge, they wanted more gratuity on the new one. See the picture here. read more

The decorations are something between cute and weird but that's not what is important. The delicious Thai food, the best I've had in the area, is the star of the show. We've had the pineapple friend rice (served in a Pineapple!), drunken noodles which are flavorful and spicy, the red curry which is creamy and delicious, the yellow curry, and more and nothing has disappointed. read more

Chao Phra Ya is a classic Thai spot that I haven't been to in a while. I happened to be in the area and ordered to go. We ordered Kao Soi w/ chicken, the Panang Chicken, and Veggie fried rice. It was delicious as ever. The rice is so fresh and not too oily and some places add a little too much fish sauce, but their version is just so fluffy and amazing. Even though I didn't think the Kao Soi was going to be as good heated up, they packed everything just right and it still held up the next day for leftovers. All of the entrees were super flavorful! DO NOT ORDER ONLINE!!! You won't know till the very end if they can deliver, and they won't put your order in until you get there, even if you pay online. We did the whole order for delivery, only to find out delivery time to be "after 6:30pm" (it was noon). If I hadn't noticed that little blurb, we would have been waiting for an order that never came. Rather than start over, we decided to pick our order up. The confirmation email gave a time it would be ready, and I was there to pickup at that time. The first lady (rude) said they didn't have any order for me. I showed her the confirmation email and she said nope, don't have it. The second lady (nice) came out and gave me the bill and said it was almost ready. 20 minutes later, still no order. I asked the first lady and she said they were just busy and the orders are made as they get them. They had ours about 45 min at this point. She went to "check on" the order, and another 10 min later it was ready. On the order ticket on the bag, the order time was 10 minutes ago. I asked the second lady why it took so long and she said they don't start the online orders until you arrive, and the first lady forgot to put my order in when I paid. This is the best Thai restaurant that I have ever tried. I'm always happy to go here. The service is really good. They're friendly, nice, and always check on you. They serve the foods quick. I've been living in the area for about two years and I've only just now discovered this great little place. Whether you feel like staying at home with delivery or going out to eat, Chao Phra Ya definitely provides. The food and service are great and if you go there, you get to eat with giant stuffed bears! Who wouldn't want to eat Thai fusion food in a French cafe style restaurant with a big cuddly pal? Food time: Duck Curry - 4/5 - The complexity of this dish is phenomenal. The broth has an incredible balance of sweet and spice and the duck comes in fairly meaty slices. I especially love the use of pineapple with cherry tomatoes. My only issue is that the savory elements are overpowered by the sweetness; Which is a little much for me and I usually have to eat it in two sittings. But that's more of a personal preference and I love having leftovers from this dish! Bravo, CPY. Summer Rolls - 4/5 - I've had these a few times and they are most definitely better in-house. The interesting appeal to CPY's summer rolls is that they add mango! Additionally, their peanut sauce has a fruity element to it. I can't say that I've had quite a unique approach to this popular appetizer. There are a few down marks to it, however, and it's primarily from ordering delivery: The rece paper is highly delicate and very susceptible to ripping. They try to prevent tgis by using plastic wrap, but it just aggrevates the consumer and tears anyways! The flavor of the summer roll is very mild. Some people like that and it's incredibly refreshing. But it's almost too mild in my opinion. I stand by my score for this small plate, but if you take them home, it's more of a 3/5. Grilled Squid - 3/5 - Loads of squid for a fair price. Cooked very nicely, but unseasoned. Some decent sauces come on the side; One sweet, one spicey. If you are trying squid for the first time, I don't recommend this. Every couple of bites were somewhat fishy tasting and the tentacles were a little over salty. I'm sure that some people enjoy it this way, it just wasn't for me. Overall, this place is excellent. There are a few dishes that I've had bites of but didn't make the review (like cashew chicken) which are exceptional and certainly outshine their flaws. The restaurant itself is very clean too, down to the bathrooms! I am happy to live close to such a great restaurant and will recommend it to anyone looking for unique oriental cuisine! read more

This is a hidden gem! You would never know the quality of food, awesome service and how cute the interior is just from outside. Its located within a strip mall next to a pub, bike shop and a Gold's gym but dont let the exterior fool you! The food is seasoned perfectly, the portions are huge and when they say spicy, they load on the spice! The food came out piping hot within 10 minutes of us sitting down and ordering. Lately we have been dealing with weird delivery issues, food so spicy you can't eat it, forgotten orders, etc. the delivery issues I'll say were due to beyond the service however everytime we called we were told they were on their way for hours, we ordered drunken noodles tonight and I can handle Thai spicy and the food was so spicy I could barely eat the food. I recently dined here after an absence from the area of a few years. It remains every bit as wonderful as I remember. I placed a carry out order and was promptly served a delightful Tom Yum Lemon Grass Soup. However, the real star was the Drunken Noodles with Duck. I had read their duck dishes were very good, so I wanted to try something with Duck. The Noodles were good and spiced just right for my American taste. The duck was super-fantastic amazing. This is me and my family's go-to Thai restaurant. They have THE BEST Thai food in NOVA!! We used to go all the time before the pandemic. God forbid if they ever shut down, I would be very sad. I haven't found a Thai place that can beat Chao Phra Ya, and I've tried a lot of different Thai restaurants. The food quality is always excellent and their service is nice. The pad thai is delicious and perfect in texture and taste. I don't know how they get their noodles to be so soft and smooth (a lot of other places have dry noodles, but not here!). The drunken noodles are amazing, with just the right amount of sauce and spice. Their duck red curry is very tasty and we really love their crispy duck with chili and basil. Chicken satay is delectable and so is their fried calamari. The decorations inside the restaurant are really cute too! I highly recommend this place!!!
