I gave Chai Phra Ya a try again, and it was excellent. The fried flounder was perfectly cooked and didn't have too much batter. The duck curry was very tasty. Was craving Thai food so we know we had to go to our usual--Chao Phra Ya. Decided to order some usuals (pad Thai, crispy duck with chili and basil) and some different dishes (whole grilled squid, Siam beef). Since I already reviewed the pad Thai and crispy duck (yep, still a 5/5 for me), I'll just be updating my review for the whole grilled squid and Siam beef. +Whole grill squid: I think I've tried almost every appetizer here except the squid and I'm so glad I did. I think this will be a regular for me. The squid was grilled perfectly, slightly chewy but soft enough, and I loved the accompanying sauces. One was a sweet sauce (husband's favorite) and the other was a garlic lime sauce (my favorite). The squid is so simple but when eaten with the sauces, the flavors are complex. You might think it's "just squid with sauce," and you're right. But southeast Asian food tends to balance sweet, salty, savory, acid, and heat all in one bite/dish and I felt like this appetizer encapsulated all of that. I appreciate that it was simple yet complex. I loved it. +Siam beef: It was a crowd pleaser in our house. It was super saucy, meat was tender, and I enjoyed the bite of slivered ginger (or you can take it off if it's not to your liking). There was a decent amount of meat in the dish. I almost had to stop myself from drinking the sauce because it seemed so wasteful (and tasteful). Definitely a safer option to try if you're trying Thai food for the first time. I've eaten here for years and tried several dishes. My favorite go to is the pad see ew as the noodles are always silky and cooked perfectly. I've had them with nearly every protein but tonight I got steamed tofu and thankfully they got it right!! I had the Kanom jeeb (large steamed dumplings) that were delicious and filling. I called to ask the restaurant if there is a new chef but it went to voicemail so I left a message. The food is not inexpensive and I would like a refund because it is that tasteless. Fried Tofu Grilled Squid Summer roll Wonton Soup Crab stuff fried rice. 2 type of teas, the passion and apple is great! I'd give A or B+ for the drinks. I absolutely hate the service and the wait. The place was not busy at all but I don't know why I can't get good customer service in here and this is my 2nd time. They don't pay attention to serving the guests where they seat you and never come to take your order unless you walk up to the front and demand service. Busing my own dirty plates and moving them to another table, and drinks being served after the middle of apps. I kept waving my hand for service and the older woman ignored me. Chao Phra Ya is a very good local Thai restaurant with a robust menu. They have a good lunch special selection and the dishes I've tried (Khao Soi, Drunken Noodle, Pad Thai, Red/Green/Masamun curry) all had good flavors that weren't overpowered by pure salt. They stir fry the noodles well here where they are not stuck together and also the dishes are not extremely oily. Overall this is a good spot that's always consistent. read more

Chao Phra Ya has been growing on my family. The space is cozy with cute stuffed animals, bookshelf full of cute decorations, and comfortable sofas and seats. We even let our toddler roam around in her socks as if she was at home. Some of the Thai dishes are mediocre; while some are delicious. We have done takeout and dine in here and I prefer dining in. The service has consistently been great when we dined in. We once had the drunken noodle to takeout and specifically ask for non-spicy as we were sharing the dish with our baby at the time. When the food arrived home, the spicy noodles hit our tongue on the first bite. We didn't make a big deal out of it. But it was disappointing. My friend encouraged me to come back the past several visits and I did find some favorites. For appetizers, the watercress salad with the fried watercress (trick your toddler into eating vegetables) and sweet sauce is so good. I also like their crispy soft shell crabs and spicy garlic shrimp. Both are fried to perfection with delicious sauces! I also like their mango sticky rice as the mango is fresh and their papaya salad. Their drunken noodles, pad Thai, duck rolls, chicken satay, and Tim Pung dessert aren't that good or mediocre, in my opinion. Guess I have been ordering incorrectly and needed some guidance from a friend. I like how they have cute plastic plates and utensils for our toddler, along with a toddler friendly cup for water. Really good Thai food! The panang curry is delicious. One of the only Thai places that serves duck pad Thai and duck drunken noodles. Food is always fresh and delicious. The ambiance of the place is cute, feels more like a coffee shop rather than a traditional Thai place. They have a special lunch menu during the weekdays and offer a wide variety of options. Food was very good. I've been twice and have ordered takeout once. I stick to the beef kaprow. Very flavorful. If you don't like spice, make sure to tell them. Even "mild spice" has a good kick. Everything was great: the cute and cozy ambience with the cute decors and giant stuffed animals, the nice server, and of course the food. They even provided cute divided plates for the kids, it's the details :) We ordered a good variety of food such as papaya salad, fried tofu, calamari, pineapple fried rice, drunken noodles, pad Thai, green curry, seafood, and a few more dishes that I forgot the names of. The calamari was huge and super crispy and I felt like it was a must order for everyone going there. Service was horrible. This is the first time I have ever left a restaurant review on yelp. My friend got there before me, the sign says please wait to be seated. There was staff standing there and no one greeted her. She eventually walked up to the counter and got seated. I arrived a few minutes later. It took 10 min to get a drink order. We ordered appetizers and the female waitress never acknowledged our order so we weren't sure if anything was order. The apps came out to a timely manner. We sat there for 20min and no one came back to take our dinner order. I finally got up and walked over to where the staff was rolling silverware and asked if some could take our dinner order. Even though they had multiple cocktail options on the drink menu, only 3 was available was which is why I took away a star. This Thai restaurant is located in the busy Village Center at Dulles shopping center. A group of work colleagues convened for an early Friday lunch. We were promptly seated, provided with water, and a member of the staff presented themselves to take orders. I got the Thai Basil with beef and white rice. The other five people put in their orders and food was delivered within 15 minutes. There was one minor misstep on a colleague's order (he wanted brown rice). It took another 10 minutes for his corrected dish to arrive. Luckily, we sat for lunch promptly at 11:45 AM. As soon as the noon hour struck, the restaurant was absolutely brimming with people. Having sampled the food, I can see why. The rice was fluffy and properly cooked. The Thai basil beef was full of familiar flavors and no trace of MSG was present. The only complaint I have is that the service was pretty slow and they only had one and sometimes another server. On a week night they were really busy with takeout and had a few tables as well which was a good sign. The vegetable Gyoza were really good and crunchy and had spinach inside and came w the really good dipping sauce. They gave a lot of Gyoza too! I tried to drunken noodles with chicken and I would say it was delicious but it was so spicy I definitely need to ask for it less spicy next time. It was veering towards medium hot. I don't know how I've managed not to step foot in this restaurant. I love Thai food and I visit my parents - who live in Herndon - frequently: two good enough reasons for the folks at this restaurant to know me on a first-name basis by now. And yet, I am just discovering this little gem. The food is good. The Pad Thai with beef that my husband ordered was probably the best I've had, the perfect balance of tangy and sweet and all-around flavorful. My Duck Thai Red Curry was wonderfully thick and coconuty, although the duck was slightly overcooked and the white rice was dry. That said, we enjoyed our dishes, but then we could have enjoyed them at any good Thai restaurant. What makes Chao Phra Ya special is its decor. It isn't your typical traditional Thai restaurant. It is bright, airy and contemporary with trendy whites and grays and big and small plush toys placed at every seat. That's right - no matter what seat you choose, you're always sitting next to a brown teddy bear dressed in a hoodie. It's cute, if not slightly creepy (there were a few times when I thought the giant bear would come to life). It's a strange vibe that combines the whimsical with the comical and the romantic - not what you'd expect for a Thai restaurant. But hubby and I appreciated the ingenuity. Came here for dinner with my boyfriend several weeks ago and I'm still thinking about this place. The interior looks freshly renovated (and if not, then very well maintained!) The staff was very friendly and everything we had was delicious (and huge portions!). We got the pad Thai, the drunken noodles and the Siam beef (clearly our eyes were bigger than our stomachs).
