One star for customer service, not taste 1 Star I booked this spot for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend, and it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. A server showed up drunk and was sent home, a chef was fired, and that left only the owner cooking and one server on the floor. After seating three tables (including us), they closed to new diners but kept taking care of takeout. Our server ignored tables, let drinks sit empty, and spent the night chatting with takeout customers. We waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for sushi, had to ask for our uncooked rolls, then waited another 20 minutes for the cooked ones -- which we could see sitting on the counter untouched. Takeout was clearly the priority, not guests dining in. When we requested a discount given the situation, we were flatly refused. For the record: the sushi itself was fine. This 1-star rating is strictly about the disastrous service, extreme wait times, takeout being prioritized over dine-in, and the refusal to make things right after ruining a birthday dinner. Sadly, this wasn't a one-off. On Valentine's Day, with a full staff, we still waited over two hours for food while takeout orders rolled out smoothly. Whether packed or nearly empty, dine-in customers are treated as second-class here. We won't be back. We were there on Thursday, July 16 for lunch. There were five of us and we ordered some food from the kitchen and the sushi bar. It took over an hour to get our food and they were not extremely busy. I'm not sure this was stated on their menu, but the food server saw to it that 20% was added to our bill for his tip. I have no problem with restaurants doing this for certain size parties, but I'm under the impression that this may have been done because of the understanding the food server had about the excessive wait time influencing his tip. That being said, I would not have docked his tip because the sushi chef took too long. However, adding it for that reason felt very shady. read more

We used to go to Chao Phraya frequently but the wait time was always too long. After more than a year, we decided to give them another chance and try takeout. We ordered one sushi roll and cashew chicken for a total of $48. The amount of chicken looked like it was less than half of a chicken breast. We had to make other food to supplement the chicken dish. The seafood daily specials were delicious, spicy but still delicately seasoned. The service was excellent, but since the meals are freshly cooked to order, don't try to get a quick bite. Our first clue should have been when we walked in an hour and a half after opening and none of the tables had any food on them. Didn't even get to base the review off of the food but based off of the service. Let me be clear it wasn't the wait staff but seems to be an issue with the management at the restaurant. We sat down at around 6:30 and then put in an order for appetizers. We didn't get asked about main orders til 7:10. At that point we just made the executive decision to, make reservations at another restaurant, pay for the drinks and leave (the appetizers weren't even brought out at this point). We arrived for our 5:30 PM reservation last night and were seated quickly. Drink orders were not taken for about 15 minutes. Our dinner order went in at 6 but we still didn't have our food by 7 PM and had an event to get to. We asked that the food be put in to-go boxes. When we finally ate our food later that evening the portions seemed small and my entree was basically just tofu and onions--no other advertised veggies. Other members of our group had similar experiences with the ingredients not as advertised or very small meat portions. We will not be going back. We often go to our River house in the northern neck near Chesapeake area and we always are looking for places to eat. We doing this nice Thai restaurant in Kilmarnock. Our realtor had recommended us this place. We often dine here during the weekdays. Some of my favorites have been shrimp tempura roll, dumpling in red sauce, Tom ghar Kai soup (love the coconut flavor), chicken satay, Chaya praya combo appetizer, and Thai green curry with chicken or shrimp. Very nice ambiance. Service has been great except for one time when they were packed and they had very few staff members to serve us. It took almost 90 minutes to get our order. Only disappointment about this place is their price for cocktails. Their Margarita is nothing too special and it will cost you $13.50. We often just dine here and then head to another place for drinks. read more

We hesitated trying this place based on some reviews but came anyway, and glad we did! We were promptly seated, ordered right away and food came out fairly quickly. Pan fried dumplings came in four small squares but were tasty with great dipping sauce, fragrant tofu soup had bits of chicken with all kinds of veggies. And the drunken noodle w/ chicken tasted better than the Thai restaurants in NoVA we frequent (how can that be??). Unsure about ordering sushi from a Thai place but tried a dragon roll just to see and it was fresh and good too. Water was promptly refilled w/o asking and tables cleared quickly by very friendly and professional staff. Only bummer was they were out of mango when we wanted to try mango w/ sticky rice. Glad we found a good Thai food in NNK and will be back to try other dishes for sure! read more

Totally exceeded my expectations. It wasn't high, so it Chao phraya soared over it. Started out a mixed drink that came with it's own cocktail shaker. It was refreshing and tasty. We also had a sushi roll, but sadly I forgot which one! I'm sure they were all just as good as this one. I think it was tempura salmon. I finished up with a novelty to me - crab fried rice!! Wow, it was just as good as I had hoped and twice as massive as I imagined. I wish I was staying somewhere with a frig. I would have eaten 1/2 of that as a second meal. As it was, I tore into it like a bear preparing for hibernation because I wanted to get as much out of it as I could. Appropriately, I ate so much that I may have fallen into a food coma afterwards... But boy, it was good. read more

I've never, ever written a negative review, especially for a small restaurant in our small town. Yet, this seems necessary, hoping to get the owner / managers to make changes... My parents also live in the area, and they warned us they've had very slow service at Chao Phraya in the past year or so with poor service each time. We hoped this wouldn't be the case, since it wasn't very packed, and we've previously enjoyed Chao Phraya over the years they've been an option in our small town. If needed, we were willing to risk a LITTLE bit of extra time for Thai food. We arrived, waited to be greeted by the hostess who was standing at the entry podium, waited a bit longer, then politely said hello, and asked about a table before anyone acknowledged us. Once seated, we were immediately told a long list of items that they did not have that evening, which are pretty standard menu items for a Thai place. But, no problem, we had plenty of other options to choose from. So, we asked the server for a little more time to decide and ordered a drink while we chose our entrees. Once getting our bar drinks, the server told us the wait for food would be at least 90 minutes, probably longer, and even longer if we ordered any sushi. Since we didn't have this kind of time to wait, we told our server thanks for letting us know before we ordered food, explaining that we didn't have that much time on this particular evening. However, our bar drinks had arrived, which we didn't want at that point, needing to leave for another restaurant with "normal" wait time. When we told the server this, she understood, but did nothing. Instead of offering any option about a $37 bar bill, she brought us a check. We quickly downed 2 cocktails, that were also not correctly made - no ginger beer in the Mule. We quickly paid the bill and left, with no acknowledgement from anyone about this inconvenience, no offer to comp the drinks, and zero consideration about whether or not a local customer might be lost. We felt tricked, unwelcome, and ZERO concern of whether we might return another time. Since we are local, we might've actually considered returning another time had there been ANY attempt at consideration. Since we were not told PRIOR TO ordering drinks about the 90min wait for food, this seemed like an easy way to make money at an establishment that is clearly having issues. Bottom line - the wait time was NOT acceptable, but the bigger issue was the way it was all handled. Terrible way to do business! We won't return unless there's an appropriate and direct response from the owner, who we have known to be a great restauranteur in the past. Locally, it's sad to see this happening since we never want to lose a business. That said, we went on down to Dredge in Irvington, which was very full, but still seated with smile, excellent drinks, amazing dinner, as always, and in a reasonable amount of time. read more

I enjoyed eating at this restaurant. I had the Drunken Noodles after discussing the menu with my dining partner. It was very good! The noodles were not soggy or over cooked. The flavor was good and the veggies were lightly cooked which is my favorite! There weren't very many non-sushi options for someone who likes spicier foods but I was informed (too late for my meal, haha) that they have a spice tray so you can add the level of spice you prefer. Even without being spicier, it was a great meal! Service was great. The staff we interacted with was friendly and helpful. They were busy and our meal took a little longer than we thought it would but hey, it's dinner and it's nice to slow down once in a while and linger at the table! The place was very clean, nicely decorated and fairly casual. I enjoyed it and look forward to going again next time in in town. I feel confident recommending this restaurant! read more

Great food, kinda slow service! The ambiance is chill - not too fancy for coming with your whole family, kids included! Nicer than your average hole in the wall though! Had sushi from here twice when in town for a month, and one of those times also enjoyed Thai dishes. The is such a hidden gem. The sushi was super fresh and the presentation was beautiful. The Goong Houm Pa was crispy and flavorful as well. The green curry was cooked perfectly and had just the right amount of spice. The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. Photos from Thailand decorated the walls and added to the ambiance. My wife and I visit the northern neck by boat often and stay near Kilmarnock. Often we will get take out and eat on the boat. In this instance my wife was in town and picked up two chicken dishes, one was cashew chicken and the other was drunken noodles with chicken. The second dish basically had no chicken and all noodles. The noodles were pasty/overcooked. The second was modestly better. Both were bland. I was so bothered by the lack of chicken that I called the restaurant and asked for the manager. The man that answered said he was and when I explained my disappointment he asked to put me on hold. After several minutes, he returned saying he had spoken with the person that had prepared the two dinners and that he had put ample chicken in them. This only made me more upset. I told him that I expected at least the drunken noodles to be removed and he said that he was not authorized to do anything and that I would need to talk to the owner Tony. Tony was to call me back and never did. In summary, I would never go to this restaurant again to sit in or take out. read more

How long can you be a wok chef if you don't wok the wok? This is the question I find myself wondering. For at least three months, Chao Phraya cannot offer any stir-fried dishes because the wok chef is absent from work. Wait staff and/or the host shrug their shoulders and advise that orders can only be taken from a "reduced menu" (e.g., soup and sushi). It is hard to believe that the owner of Chao Phraya intends to well-serve customers and potential customers Thai dishes without a wok chef. Most recently (October 7th at 11:10) I found myself wanting to patronize this neighbor in Kilmarnock with a business owner who seems unable (or poorly motivated) to meet the demands of this consumer. I suggest that Tony (the owner) fire the under-functioning wok chef and then: (1) hire a new wok chef, (2) become the wok chef, or (3) train an existing staff member the skills of wok cooking (which does not seem all that complicated, when you think about it). Oh well, perhaps during the winter season. read more

Have ordered take out here several times and was always satisfied. Went with friends once last year and it took forever to get food and was actually told if we wanted sushi it would be a longer wait. Thinking that might have been a one time issue, we decided to go for my daughter in laws birthday and it was a nightmare. Took 45+ minutes to get our drinks, while waiting for drinks the waitress ask if we wanted to order our food since it seemed like it would be awhile before our drinks came out. There was only one waitress, a chef and a sushi chef. When the waitress had a few minutes she made our drinks, obviously she was not a bartender. We finally started getting our food after being there 2 1/2 hours, but it came out one plate at a time, so we had to basically eat in shifts so our dinner wouldn't get cold before the rest of the table was served. I know it has been difficult for restaurants to get people to work but if they don't change it might be the end of this place. This is an excellent Thai/sushi restaurant. However, be aware that almost every time we have been there the chef/owner has not been there or has come in late. During those times they have a "limited" menu. This means that sushi and appetizers are only available. The sushi chef is excellent and if that is your desire then you are going to go. However, if you want a Thai dish be prepared to be disappointed because the chef/owner is not often there. It's a mystery why he does not show up at his own restaurant. Meals should come to everyone at the table at the same time- but if you order sushi expect to eat 30 minutes after everyone in your party. Ordered takeout from this restaurant. Never again. Asked for 3 Pad Thai orders and was told it would be 40 minutes. I specifically asked for medium heat level. Gave them 45 minutes before I picked up order. Once I got there I had to stand in the lobby for another 25 minutes to get my food. When I got it home we discovered the orders had dried Thai chilli's poured over the top of each order. It was so hot two of us could not eat their meal. I called the restaurant to tell them of the issue and the person who answered the phone (the same person who took the order) only said, "Well I wrote medium on the ticket, I don't what you want me to do" and hung up on me. Usually I go to the Thai Pot restaurant across the street but I thought I would give this a try. A mistake I will not make again. 1st impressions carry a lot of weight. Everything my friend and I had was delicious. I had the seafood sizzler with scallops, shrimp tempura, and lobster tail over veggies. She had crispy duck. Duck is the chef/owner's specialty I think. I've had the duck that liked only one other time and that was at a fancy restaurant in Middleburg, VA (aka very expensive). The seafood was so good too. The lobster was soft and buttery. We also had the calamari and it was good but unlike what I've had anywhere before because it was fried in tempura batter. For "dessert" was a spicy tuna roll and could not complain. I would definitely order it again. I live about 35 or 40 min away and would love to be able to order ahead for pick up. Great ambiance, terrible service. Waited almost 2 hours for our food... overcharged me before I asked for adjustment on bill. Asked for everything at least 2-3 times before waitress actually brought it and when I said something to the manager there were absolutely no apologies... instead was met defensively with a lecture that it takes an hour for the food to be made (which at that point had been an hour and a half) with our group of 11 people. Literally everyone in the restaurant to him, and after us got their food first, while we sat there and waited patiently watching people come and go. Had 2 small babies in our group and one pregnant woman and it took so long we had people who had to leave before we even got our food. We got a fake apology from the waitress AFTER watching her talk S*** with a fellow table to regulars across from our table... wow... unreal. I would never eat there again.
