We happened to be in Tappahannock, VA on a Monday evening celebrating our nephew's birthday and, by chance, ended up at 528 Italian American Restaurant, and we're so glad we did. We had a party of 10, and they were incredibly quick to accommodate us. From the start, the service stood out. Our server worked hard throughout the evening to ensure everything was smooth and that we had an excellent dining experience. The food was fantastic. A few of us ordered the 40 oz. Tomahawk steak with shrimp and two sides, and it was easily one of the best steaks I've had. While $120 is definitely an investment, it was well worth it, the meat was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The sauce on the side complemented it nicely, the sides were delicious, and the presentation really elevated the entire dish. It's also large enough to easily feed two people. Others at the table enjoyed a variety of dishes, including the surf and turf special (ribeye and shrimp for $40), a fish sandwich, and a ribeye steak and cheese. Everything that came out looked and tasted great. They also brought out complimentary bread with a homemade dipping sauce, which was a nice touch. You can tell they take pride in their food--we got the sense that much of it is made in-house. We also tried a few desserts, and they did not disappoint. The carrot cake, in particular, was one of the best I've had. Inside the restaurant was large and looked like they could host banquet and parties. We even had the opportunity to meet and talk with the owner, Tony, and were impressed by his background and passion for what he does. Overall, we had a great experience, and most importantly, our nephew had a wonderful birthday celebration. We will definitely be stopping back in the next time we're in the area. read more

The food is authentic and delicious! It's evident when the food is prepared from the heart and with passion. We ordered several items from the menu and each one was prepared perfectly. The carrot walnut soup was delicious. We ordered the fig/procuto and it was fresh and delicious. The crust was sooo good and the toppings were fresh and of obvious quality. What a great place! This was our first stop here since the old Lowery's closed, and it did not disappoint! I wanted pizza, but they only served full size pies, so I opted for the blackened chicken sandwich instead. Great choice! The chicken was juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned...not salty like so many "blackened" options tend to be. Sandwich came with a plate FULL of fries, and everything was temp hot when served. Our waitress was prompt, friendly, and perfectly attentive (not too nosy, but knew when we needed something!) The atmosphere was an upgrade from the previous tenant, slightly more modern and upscale, and there is a nice little wine shop by the entrance! Our family have been here multiple times. the food is always delicious. A couple of nights ago we went for dinner and my daughter, who has a dairy allergy, really wanted a club sandwich but we couldn't confirm if the bread was dairy free. So the owner came to the table and offer to make her fresh bread. My daughter loved it and it smelled so wonderful I had to have a taste too. It was excellent. And such a kind thing to do. Last night, I was fortunate enough to have such an experience. We sat at the bar, where Patrice, our bartender and waitress, provided attentive service. The food and wine were exceptional, and my dish came with a salad and bread, a welcome surprise in today's dining landscape. The prices were reasonable, and we left with plenty of leftovers. The owner checked in on us several times, demonstrating a commitment to customer satisfaction. The restaurant is located in the old Lowery's building but has undergone significant renovations and looks nicer than ever. The new owner has only been in charge for five months, and I highly recommend checking it out; you'll be glad you did. Me and my husband stopped at this restaurant on our way home for a quick dinner and were amazed with the quality of an authentic Italian food and outstanding hospitality!!! We ordered a thin crust pizza - it was made in a brick oven and exactly to our liking. Our special requests were talked to the pizza maker and result was exactly what we wanted. It was our first time eating there and we plan to go back! We had lunch pasta dishes. I had Rigatonio Vesuvio and my husband had Spaghetti Vongole. I can honestly say that was the best pasta I've ever tasted! We were presented with two pieces of warm bread with some olive oil to dip it on. This is the third Friday in a row my girlfriend and I have treated ourselves to 528 Prime Steak & Seafood. The service is prompt, the staff is friendly, the food is awesome. We've tackled the Tomahawk Steak & Crab for two, the Steamed Seafood Platter, and tonight the Fried Rockfish and the Pot-roast & Mash. We have yet to be disappointed - everything, all 3 times, has been perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and left us only wanting for a to-go box. The place is newly remodeled, clean, and the new owner is a seasoned restaurant pro originally from Italy who offers something from his roots as well as more standard fare. Our lunch, we split the crabcake sandwich and rockfish sandwich, was delicious. Fresh rockfish, breaded and fried , crabcake a good size for the price, both perfectly cooked, light, with some crisp. For dinner, we ordered the fresh salmon, which was cooked to a turn, and I had the signature pasta which had pork belly and shrimp in a creamy tomato sauce, delicious. Appears to be an extensive selection of wines, though we stuck to beer and wine by the glass. Staff was attentive. A lot of bang for the buck here, the food is good, and priced reasonably. Give the 528 a whirl, they are a plus for the community, and you'll leave well satisfied. read more

A recent visit to the area dropped us in this dining establishment for a relaxed dinner before crossing over the bridge to the Northern Neck. I wish we could have stayed in Tappahannock, as this place would have been worth another visit. The gal waiting on us was new and training with the manager Holly. She was super pleasant, and I think she will do great once she tastes all the dishes and can have a better palette for the menu. Holly was intuitive and knew where to guide us on the large variety of menu options. We were in Appetizer and Seafood mood, so we ordered the Oyster Rockefeller and a Scallop Appetizer. Both were a great deal, priced reasonably and a surprising number of scallops on the appetizer dish (an unusual treat). Having had oysters all over the East coast from Maine to Florida, I am not kidding when I say these were the best Rockefeller, we have ever had the pleasure of eating. Had horrible experience here last night. Went to dinner with friends. Orders were all messed up. One friend ordered fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and got some kind of mystery sausage instead of chicken. The waitress argued that it was chicken. Every one of us at the table tasted it and agreed it was sausage. Too many other problems to list. They told us they were taking the fettuccine off the bill but the bill came and it was still on there. We gave the bill back and then they said they gave us a discount but it still showed the same amount. It took the owner a half an hour trying to do something on the register. I had to stand over his shoulder while he was doing... I don't know what. He didn't seem to know what he was doing. Finally he took a small amount off the bill and I just threw money at him because I wanted to get out of there. We heard the wait staff apologizing to every table in the restaurant. I think the problems all stem from the owner not knowing what he is doing. I'm sure he is a nice guy but geez I don't want to suffer like this again when all I'm trying to do is have a nice meal with friends. read more

I wanted to give this place a chance. The restaurant is clean with a pleasant atmosphere. This was my fourth visit. The first was not pleasant because the wait staff were not very attentive and my order was incorrect. I didn't want to return the order because the rest of my party was well into their food. The second time was better. I'd give it four stars, they got the order right. Not a great steak though. The third visit was shrimp scampi for lunch lunch. Nothing special. Last night I ordered prime rib medium rare. It was cooked properly but barely warm and very bland. Not what you expect from a "prime" steakhouse. The garlic mashed potatoes were heavy on the garlic. I was disappointed again. Not my waitress's fault. She was great. I'm sad to say I will not be returning unless my friends insist. I'll try the pizza then. read more

I went against my standard procedure of if you don't have at least a 4 star rating, I'm not eating there. I read the bad reviews and thought that because I was not going to be ordering the things that they complained about, we might be okay. Ohhh my, was I wrong. The 1 star is for the waitress. She did a good job. So let's talk about what they called food. My wedge salad was the best part of the meal, but you can't really mess up a wedge salad. The blue cheese dressing was store bought and not the greatest at that. The jalapeño poppers were absolutely terrible, and I could have had better had I bought them from Food Lion and put them in the air fryer. My wife and I both got the Oysters Rockefeller. If you could call them, that. Absolutely the worst. Basically, they were oysters on the half shell with about a quarter cup of bread stuffing on top of them. Even taking the stuffing off, you had an overcooked oyster. My wife had the fried seafood platter, which consists of thawed seafood deep fried in the same oil everything is fried in. If it was free, I would still pass it up. It was that bad. You have now been warned. read more
