This place has a solid "B" menu - average noodles, average entrees, average dim sum. But if you're like me, and sorely tired of the dwindling list of passable Chinese restaurants in the area, you'll stop in because the beef noodle soup just might evoke the memories of the real Taiwanese stuff you had in the motherland, and you can pretend the sticky rice wasn't made last night and is now just starting to dry up a bit. At least the prices won't leave your wallet as sad as you are after a meal here, but honestly, I just want to go shake the chef and say, "My good sir! We are A-sians, not B-sians! Have you given up on life??" Alas, I will never muster up the shrimp balls for that, but metro-Detroit is so lacking in authentic Chinese food that sadly, places like Chao Zhou will have to do. read more

Dim sum dishes were delicious, as well as the Taiwanese noodles (comes out very spicy). As for the pork ramen I ordered, it's a complete joke. "Pork Bone" broth was flavorless, like white pepper flavored water and a complete insult to Japanese cuisine. I know I'm at a Chinese restaurant so why the heck would I order Japanese? Because it sounded good. If anyone from the restaurant ever reads this, take your ramens off of your menu. You can't be everything to everyone, just offer menu items you can actually please customers with. read more

Me and my dad ate here on a Friday between about 5:30-6:45 pm, before goint to a Pistons basketball game. This place is half a mile from my apartment. My dad ordered a mixture containing beef. I forgot what the recipe is called. He ordered wonton soup too. The soup looked like it was enough for two or more people. The waitress gave us two empty smaller bowls but I didn't try the soup. I ordered the cashew chicken. About 1/4 of the plate was plain white rice. I could have gotten fried rice for a higher price. But it was good rice, not sticky or clumping together, not wet, perfectly soft, each grain easily separating from the other grains. The chicken was perfectly tender, with only a faint hint of stringyness. The vegetables had a nice, partially cooked soft crunch. The sauce was light tan colored and thick enough to coat the whole mixture, not too watery but not too dried out. And yes, there were some who cashews in the mixture. The order came with an egg roll too. I rarely eat in restaurants and I rarely eat this kind of food, so I don't have anything to compre it to. But I would eat here again. read more

First visit for my wife and I about two weeks ago. The menu assumes you know too much. That is the main thing knocking a star off because I'm ordering blind. We need a fuller description and a picture would be even better. I'm sure they think 'Well everybody has eaten this stuff and knows what we are talking about.' No, we don't. The customers who post pictures and just say "yummy" without telling us what it IS are similarly useless. I got the hot pot with tofu and various meats. They were fine. My wife got the Szechuan chicken as a dinner on one plate meal and was very happy with it. We are going back later today - the reason I am here online was to check how late they are open. I will probably get the tofu and fillet hot pot - after I make sure what exactly OF WHAT it is a fillet. I'm hoping for beef. See what I mean about the menu? Added 2/6/'18 - I am deaf. I made the mistake of stopping without my wife who is a hearing person to get carry-out. I wanted Szechuan Chicken for my wife and told her to make the same thing in beef for me. POINTED to it on the menu. Left to go to credit union and came back. They did not write anything down - always a BAD sign. Came back they had not made anything - wanted to charge me for Chicken only and start cooking. Tried to say I didn't say lunch or dinner... No. You didn't listen. Older woman of the two was plain unfriendly unlike the waitress we see on Saturdays. Told them to forget it and went down 14 mile Rd. to another place. Food is tasty and authentic! Decor is a bit drab but the food is worth it. Taiwanese beef noodles are very tasty (and not even Cantonese!)

We ended up here because Tienda Mexicana in the same plaza didn't open on time (11:00). They have a lot to choose from, and it all looked great on the menu, but everything we ordered tasted a little off. The only exception was the beef and wide noodle which tasted ok. If you open a restaurant across the street from the famous Fuji Buffet, you're either crazy, or have something to offer that Fuji doesn't. I know Fuji doesn't serve authentic Chinese, or Japanese, food. When I was employed, I could afford to eat wherever I pleased, so I know what authentic tastes like. But now I'm a retiree living on a fixed income, and Fuji's food is pretty good for the price (thanks to their senior citizen's discount). Chao Zhou's prices would be pretty good, too, if their food was as good as Fuji's. Unfortunately, it isn't. Three of the four previous reviewers called Chao Zhou 'authentic'. It probably is authentic. I can see this restaurant in some small village in rural China. Everyone eats there - not because the food is good, but because it's the only restaurant in the village. Chao Zhou serves peasant food, and I don't mean that in a good way. I like authentic peasant food. Some of the best meals I've ever eaten were authentic peasant food served in small storefront restaurants. Chao Zhou isn't one of them. After eating some har gow and shu mai (called 'shrimp dumpling' and 'pork dumpling' on the menu, which was entirely in English - not a good sign), I decided that dim sum was not Chao Zhou's house specialty, so I ordered a main course. It was listed on the menu as 'vegetables with garlic sauce'. The 'vegetables' (plural) turned out to be only one vegetable: kai lan, aka Chinese broccoli. I could taste no garlic sauce, or any other flavor on the kai lan. It was limp and mushy, as if it had been steamed too long - and yet it was not hot, but barely warm. I was reluctant to criticize this little restaurant. It's like shooting a fly with a howitzer. But if you open a restaurant across the street from the famous Fuji Buffet, you have to expect comparisons. read more

I have been here a few times and have really enjoyed this place. The dim sum is good, but not superlative. I like the steamed buns. I really enjoyed the curried brisket, and especially liked that it was chocked full of vegetables. The beef was super tender and the curry was flavorful (but could have used a bit more kick). The service is prompt and they get their prepared meat next door at the Oriental Market. I definitely want to go back to try the roast pork hanging at the market. read more

Authentic Cantonese food. I like the fact that I can purchase live seafood from the grocery store nearby, and have them cook for me at a reasonable price. Only downsize is that they are understaffed. Usually not an issue because they are not busy, but during holiday or weekend, expect long wait time. read more

They don't cater to non-Asians since they don't really speak English and the food might scare the uninitiated away... Chicken feet, tripe, tofu dessert, and even braised beef tendon. This place used to be decent but now it's getting worse. Not sure if they change kitchen staff or what, now everything is sweet. Ordered Taiwanese beef noodle soup and the beef is sliced not chunk style, tastes like the sliced beef used for cold dish. Soup base is not even close to the real thing. Ordered beef stew rice with egg, beef stew is also on the sweet side and the daikon is bigger than tea cup..... peppery pork chopn is only dish that was on par, though it is still on the fatty side with lots of tendons. We come to this little place every week! My wife always orders the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, and I've pretty much tried everything on it's menu (and on the side wall). For those who don't speak Chinese, this place could be a little bit intimidating. The waitresses there don't speak too much English, and the menu itself won't help you much neither. We read the reviews on this restaurant and decided to give it a try; bad mistake. My wife ordered a dumpling soup and I ordered orange chicken. The meat in the dumplings (pork) was not cooked. My wife bit into one and spat it out, They attempted to make it right by giving her another bowl of soup. She tasted one of the dumplings and said they had no taste. She dug the dumplings out of the soup and ate the noodles and broth. My orange chicken tasted like the breaded chicken was cooked in oil and then allowed to cool in the same oil. Plus the orange sauce was a tasteless gel of some sort. I give them credit for their rice though, it had more flavor than anything else. Save your money and go around the corner to the mall. They have a Panda Express there that puts this place to shame. read more

I don't mean to be so negative but this is definitely not the better Chinese restaurants out here. First of all, I don't understand the people saying how "authentic" the food is when all I taste is a dish that is from a local carry-out *extremely Americanized Chinese food... I would guess that the people giving high ratings on this place have never been to China or never had exquisite high grade Chinese food. It's a restaurant that is way too hyped up about... I would have to give props to genuinely great tasting dimsums but other than that the noodles and rice is a mix of Americanized + Fusion of oil and carbohydrates. A surplus amount of oil was coming out from my carry-out box from the noodle I ordered (Beef and thick rice noodle without any broth). The lady that was on the counter did not seem to care that a brand new customer was coming in and carelessly kept giving us quick stares and kept serving the four tables that had Chinese people dining in... A total disappointment. *If you want to Chinese restaurant nearby that is closer to being authentic, go to "Trizest restaurant", about 2 miles away. read more

I am from San Francisco and have been looking for some authentic Chinese food in the area. The food here is delicious and they give you a generous portion. The spicy fried pork chop is one our favorite. We like coming here often to try out some new dishes. Highly recommended. read more

Shu mai dim sum was EXCELLENT! I ordered the Tiawanese spicy beef noodle soup and it tasted much different than what I expected. Not bad, just different. The soup has a sourness to it and was kind of sweet as well. It was very well-seasoned and was pretty hearty for a soup. I didn't finish it because I wasn't really a big fan of the sourness but, I'll definitely be back to this place to try a different soup (and more dim sum). There's just something odd about this place I can't quite put my finger on, but always find myself back here. If they would just put a little more effort into the cleanliness and customer service, this place could be amazing. The space itself is decent enough. It never looks clean, but it isn't dirty. The service here is what you'd expect from any other mom and pop Chinese restaurant. They're there facilitate between you and the kitchen. If you need anything, you're gonna have to wave them down. The food here is quite authentic. Their clay pot dishes are the standouts. Comes out piping hot and stays hot throughout the whole meal. Careful, the pots are very hot. They're also quite generous with noodle dishes. Their dim sum is odd and I feel like an afterthought. It's not bad, but it's not really worth it either. First time trying based on reviews. Had some dim sum - shrimp and pork rice crepes. They were good and larger than other places. Had beef brisket soup with thick noodles. Beef was awesome. Tender and flavorful. The soup was savory but a tad bland so I added some white pepper to bring it back on point. Generous portions, good taste, service good, overall good. Staffs are friendly. I had a wonton soup noodles while my husband had a beef brisket soup noodles. I loved the wonton as they are made of shrimps, which is Hong Kong style. My husband liked his but he thought it was a little bit salty. However, we were happy with our meals and we will go again. read more

The only problem I have with this place is the fact that even though they say they serve dim sum from 11-3, midway through that time, they stop making a lot of the dim sum that's on their menu.
