Came here for a birthday dinner (party of 11), and the experience started off a bit rocky. We ordered drinks right away, and both mine and my aunt's never came out. We had to remind our server -- which was strange because he's the one who took the order. Also, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. We were the only large party here, so it didn't really make sense why simple drinks took so long or were forgotten. We arrived around 7:00 p.m., and our food didn't come out until about 8:02 p.m. I ordered the al pastor burrito plate with no cheese or sour cream, and that part was done correctly. However, the beans on the plate still came with cheese. The server apologized twice and took it back to correct it, which I appreciated. The burrito itself was okay, but the tortilla was very soggy and falling apart, so I ended up having to use a separate tortilla to eat it. The meat was fine -- not bad -- but overall the food could've been better, especially after a long wait. The best part of the night was the birthday celebration. They brought out flan, played music, gave sombrero hats, and even did fun shots for my dad. That moment was lively, memorable, and the staff put effort into making it special. Decided to try out Chapala's new location in Morgan Hill. I love LOVE the aesthetics of the interior & exterior of the restaurant, the mural of Vicente Fernandez and Maria Felix is a beauty. When I got to Chapala I was not sure what to expect. The place looks new and is very clean. Not the hole in the wall spots I am used to: There were some of my favorites like a seafood molcajete, Mojarra frita, and tacos de tripa. So we decided on those items except the Mojarra was a la diabla. As a spicy food lover with most places not at all touching my spice limits the Mojarra was the best I've ever had. The tacos de tripa were very good but with the red sauce on the side there a complexity of flavors I have never tasted for such a simple dish. The seafood molcajete was yet another homerun. The sauces here are one of a kind. They are rich, savory, and spicy. I will be coming back again... and again... and again. The ambiance was perfect for a slow starting morning, day drinking, or relaxing after a long day. Beautiful interior. Very nice server(s), we usually get the same guy because we come later in the evening. We've gone 4x so far, first time I ordered shrimp and steak fajitas. Shimp were very good and plentiful, nice soft texture, not overcooked. I wished it came with sour cream (upon returning, I see I could have ordered it on the side for an extra charge). Second/third times I got the pozole and enjoyed it very much! Had leftovers each time. Pork was very tender and moist. I like to order it with chips instead of tortillas. Last time, we went for breakfast. Husband got steak rancheros and I got chilaquiles verde. Rancheros comes with the tortillas beneath the eggs and sauce so order tortillas on the side of you prefer to dip. Chilaquiles were good too, but ask for a side of diced onions to sprinkle on top. Next time I will try the chilaquiles rojo. We have never been charged for chips/salsa. Maybe it was something they had initially piloted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ On all occasions, we have gotten a tangy green salsa. Once, they brought us a dark brownish-red salsa, but our server remembered how much we liked the green from us requesting more on previous visits that he brought us the green too! I originally reserved for a party of 30, but it ended up being closer to 36. Fortunately, the restaurant was able to accommodate us. Despite having limited staff, I was genuinely impressed by how smoothly everything ran. The drinks were amazing, and the food was fantastic -- the shrimp cocktail and shrimp tacos were especially delicious, and the burritos were huge! Was very excited to try something new! Went for lunch with my husband and son - this might sound silly but first red flag, no coloring menu for small children - totally understand that's not necessary but man is it nice to have. Also - no chips and salsa at the table? Had to ask for chips and salsa (we heard other tables asking too) and when they came the chips were cold (almost stale) and it only came with green salsa - insteresting - when we asked for red salsa we got tapatio in a small ramekin.... Yuck. My husband got two margaritas - somehow the specialty margarita was 50 cents cheaper than the house margarita? Not sure how that works out.... But okay? My biggest issue with our visit would probably be my order. I went with the "Tacos Especiales Plate" advertised as tacos with my choice of meat, rice and beans and a side salad. I asked for no beans due to a dietary restriction. I audibly laughed when my food came out - ONE single chicken taco (with almost no onions or cilantro) and a tiny pile of ice berg lettuce with no dressing, and a sliced orange. FOR 16 dollars?!?
