This is a family owned, family operated business, and you've really gotta hand it to them. You can tell there's a piece of their heart in there. Chapati's environment is very bright and charming. Lots of seating options available. There's a chalk menu on the wall or smaller ones you can take to the table with you to decide. And the decision making is tough because the entire menu looks amazing. I love love love how many vegetarian options they have, and they've truly mastered the cuisine. I have a hard time convincing myself to head west, despite the call of so much excellent world food. Sunday changed that, when we had another reason to venture that way, I knew it was my moment. I had my introduction to Chapati at a Yelp event and knew I had to pay them a visit. Yesterday, I got my chance. I stopped in for dinner. The first thing you notice is the decor, it's like contemporary, traditional, and hip hop had a baby that became an interior decorator. The guy at the counter was great about explaining how everything worked. We decided to try a couple combos to share as a table. First and foremost- that butter chicken is AMAZING! I was actually mad I agreed to share. We also got the goat, a lamb kebob, samosas and the chapati. Everything was delicious.I really enjoyed the fact that you could customize the heat level of each dish. I love finding gems off the beaten path. Chapati is very unique shop located in the International Marketplace. There were many varieties of plates and they all came from different countries. I decided to have an eggplant Marsala from India. It was delicious! It is also from their culture they serve a "bread" of some type. In India it is tradition to call the tortilla, papadum. I added the eggplant Marsala to the papadum! It was incredible. I love how you can eat mindfully here because the spices are so rich in flavor. Thank goodness my family likes to try new types of food. While looking for a new restaurant to try, we settled on Chapati based on the numerous glowing reviews. We love Indian and Middle Eastern food, and I was curious to try Pakistani cuisine. We were not disappointed! The restaurant is very eclectic and welcoming. There are several tables that accommodate various party sizes. While you wait for your food, there is also a ping pong table, carrom boards, or you can watch the amazing Bollywood music videos playing on the TV screens. Ordering is done at the counter, and you grab your own silverware and water, and head to the table of your choice. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a few desserts. The food is made to order, so don't expect anything to come out too quickly, but it's all worth the wait. My first visit, I got the Malai Kofta and Palak Paneer. This combo came with rice and chapati. Everything was bursting with flavor! My next visit I stuck with the Malai Kofta, but tried the Paneer Tikka Masala. This was very delicious and spicy. Another Yelp bookmark checked off my list and another amazing, local restaurant to add to my "go - to" places. I kept seeing this place pop up on a lot of the "best of Yelp" lists and after seeing that it was Indian/Pakistani cuisine, I knew it was going to be one to try. My husband and I love all things spicy and ethnic, and we have been to the gambit of delicious Indian places around the city. But, this one definitely takes the cake! Like many of the hidden gems in Indianapolis, Chapati is tucked away in an unassuming strip mall in one of the less "visited" parts of the city. This is not Mass Ave, BRip, or Fnt Square. They're on the west side of town off Lafayette Road. But, I feel like this is the type of place that COULD be found in Fnt Square or BRip with their urban - like decor mixed with cool, cultural accents (including a mini Library with Indian books, a Carrom table -- a game similar to shuffleboard-- and Bollywood music playing in the background.) The staff is extremely friendly and eager to share their house-made dishes with visitors. I have tried a fair share of Indian dishes, but I had never had Pakistani before. The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful in suggesting what entrees to try. I ended up getting the goat and beets per his and many Yelp recommendations. I was not disappointed! You know when the dish is good when the meat is still on the bone! They must have been stewing that goat for hours because it melted right off the bone. Their beet sauce wasn't super beet-y. It had just the right amount of beet pureéd in with the tomato sauce. My only gripe is that when you ask for MILD spicy-ness, it tends to lean more toward MEDIUM on the hot scale. But, I still devoured that dish haha. My husband got the Chicken Biryani dish and that was exceptionally good. Moist chicken that has been marinating all day in fragrant spices. It was REALLY brightly colored too...the red-est red I've ever seen! He really enjoy it as well. You get your choice of naan bread, chapati (a very thin, crepe-like bread) or jasmine rice on the side. We got all three to give each a try. The rice was my favorite. It was so colorful with flecks of red bell pepper and chopped cilantro in it, and I distinctly tasted cardamom and cumin mixed in. So tasty! We also nabbed a couple samosa. Holy crap! These suckers were the biggest samosas I've ever seen! And they came with two yummy dipping sauces -- a sweet, brown one and a savory, cilantro-based one. I probably could've made a meal on just those samosas because they were so filling! I wish I would've tried some of their Street Chaats, as I'm more prone to eating vegetarian dishes when I get Indian, but that goat though....oh sweet baby Jane so good! I'll be back to try them for sure. The service was pretty quick too. We sat at a comfy booth and they brought our food out to us. I would give this restaurant six stars if I could. It is that good. The eggplant masala is my favorite dish in all of Indianapolis. Some people have cravings for ice cream or chocolate... I have cravings for eggplant masala from Chapati. The chapati is wonderful, and don't miss the hot chai---it is the real deal, not a mix. And while you will undoubtedly be full at the end of your meal, get an Arabian smoothie to go anyway. You'll be glad you did. Needed a quick lunch to go while running errands. The team at chapati not only nailed the order but it was ready as soon as I walked in and paid. No saying 10-15 minutes that turns into 20-30. My butter chicken and chili chicken were still hot, as well as the naan bread. (I recommend asking for extra naan since it really is that great) This is definitely a good option for an alternative to fast food in the area. Menu is misleading. Ordered 2 individual entrees that indicated it came with rice. When we got home there was no rice. Called the restaurant and reluctantly they said we could come back and pick up rice. Couldn't tell which entree was which. Containers were full of greasy broth and not much food. In a word - fantastic. The flavors are vibrant and fresh, the service was friendly and fast, and then I found myself not wanting to leave after I finished eating! We ordered chai and a mango lassi for dessert, and one of the guys working there taught us how to play a game that works kind of like pool. I think this would be a great place to hang out with friends, whether it's for a quick chai, a snack, or a full-out meal. Since it's so close to Eagle Creek Park, it could be a good post-hike stop! I recommend choosing a combo option. You can combine dishes from any section of the menu, which means that you and your date will be able to try four dishes if you share. However, my date LOVED the goat and beet dish and seemed reluctant to share, and I felt the same way about the eggplant masala. Fair warning - I love me some fatty, tender meat, but if you don't, you might not like the goat meat. I like that you can actually eat spicy Indian food here. So many Indian restaurants in Indy are kind of bland, but this one can provide a kick! If that's not your thing, you can still order a nonspicy version. I tried the butter chicken, chicken biryani, puri, naan, and Chapati, along with the Arabian smoothie. Everything was delicious! We had Halwa puri and Nihari at Chapati restaurant on Lafayette street in Indianapolis. Halwa puri price is $23.00. That is outrageously expensive. For comparison, Same item at TAHOORA Sweets on Devon Street in Chicago is $7.99 and same price at Savoy restaurant in Houston. The quality of Channa cholay was below average. Halwa and aloo were average so was the puri. Service was good. Our overall check for for 4 teas, one meat item(Nihari) 2 orders of Halwa puri and 2 naans was $108. The staff is always helpful and polite, and the food is so fantastically fresh and tasty, served in generous portions. I also appreciate how they outline what is vegan or vegetarian; knowing that I can trust a restaurant to prepare food in-line with my dietary needs is paramount. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is comfortable and casual, usually with Bollywood-style music videos playing throughout the restaurant. It can take a little bit of time to get the food, but that's because it's being served fresh and hot. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala with Garlic Naan to go. The dish was SO OILY. I'm used to there being some oil, maybe even more than usual, but I really think this was excessive considering it only was sitting in the container for the 20 minute drive when the photo was taken. I was also kind of disappointed to realize that rice does not come with the Chicken Tikka Masala, you have to order it separately. I originally thought the restaurant just forgot to give it to me, but after reviewing the menu again I see it is not included. I ended up stopping by another restaurant on the way home to grab rice. I will say the interior of the restaurant was cute, but was not very clean. There were several tables still left with dishes that needed to be cleaned.
