Been to Chapeau a couple times during Restaurant Week and it's one of my consistent favorites! Do get the mussels and fries, the cassoulet and duck confit are definitely hearty options. They always make me and my guest feel special here and it's a perfect date night or anniversary spot!

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Chapeau seems like a your local neighborhood restaurants that has been here for years. I can see a lot of the people here are loyal customers. I wish they sat us in a cuter location. They sat us right next to the bar in an awkward table that was facing a cash register. The back had cuter vibes. Staff was very friendly and bubbly doe! Complementary Tomato Bisque Shot: 5/5 Honestly I wish I was able to order a bowl of this. THIS WAS AMAZING Yellow Corn Soup: 5/5 YUMMMAYYYY. On the sweeter side but i love it. Filet Mignon: 4/5 For some reason this dish tasted a bit asian. Meat was very tender, perfectly cooked to medium rare. Complementary Bread & Butter: 4/5 The norm. But eat this with the escargot and its 5/5! Escargot: 4/5 5/5 flavor! 4/5 because the escargot didn't come in a shell and was not as fresh. Branzino Meuniere: 3/5 Fish was perfectly cooked but it was over salted, very salty. The riz a l'ail was drowned in butter. Paper Plane: celebrity rating from friends cuz I don't drink alc. "3/5 for the taste, 4/5 for the alc content. STRONG." My girlies were tipsy after half the glass. Salade Lyonnaise: 3/5 This was alright. Pomegranate & Lime Mocktail: 3/5 Honestly just tasted like a regular lemonade. Nothing special.

I wish I had the experience most reviews rave about, but for me, it was pretty mid. On the plus side, we were seated in a corner away from the crowd, which was nice as the restaurant quickly filled up. The tables are quite close together, making it a bit of a squeeze to get in and out for restroom breaks (which I expected to look nicer). The 3- or 4-course option seems like the best value since you get to mix and match appetizers, entrées, and desserts. We started with a complimentary soup taster, which, paired with warm bread and butter, was actually my favorite part of the meal. I ordered the salade lyonnaise (a bacon salad that was a bit salty), the filet mignon (just okay), and the blueberry clafoutis (which I really enjoyed, it reminded me of bread pudding). I also tried the lamb, which I've recently started to appreciate, but this one was too gamey for my taste. By the end of the night, I was definitely full, but for the price, my taste buds weren't exactly impressed. Service was friendly, though they were very busy, and we had to wait quite a while for the check.

I celebrated my 30th birthday here, so this place already has a special spot for me. The owner is also the chef, and he's incredibly friendly. You can tell he really cares about what he's doing. He's also training his son, which I loved seeing. His son made the pâté en croûte in the pictures. I'd even recommend this place to a French person without hesitation. The food is top notch, the service feels genuine, and the atmosphere just makes you want to stay longer.

Read below for separate reviews of each dish. Do note: it took almost an hour between appetizers and mains and the overall dinner was pushing 3 hours... (a bit too long unfortunately) - if you're interested in more reviews follow @leafynoms on instagram Bread & Butter: outside was super crispy with a nice fluffy and aerated center; the crust itself was a bit harder than I remember but the butter is nicely salted. Amuse Bouche: pea and leek soup topped with truffle oil Soup was served cold and was very savory.. first the truffle flavor hit your tongue followed by the leeks and ending on a bit of a spice-note at the end Salmon Trio: cured salmon (gravlax) surrounding a mound of tart with salmon roe, eggs, and capers + creamy white sauce When eaten altogether it was creamy, salty, sweet and very texturally unique. There was true harmony in this dish and making sure you get a little of everything in each bite is crucial! Moules Frites: as an appetizer, came with ~15 mussels bathing in a beautifully rich butter sauce served with a side of crispy, salty French fries with an anchovy aioli. Mussels had soaked up the wonderful broth and were bursting with flavor, but the true star is the thick aioli - super rich and addicting, more savory than anything and reminded me of the umami of pate. Scallop: fennel confit, grapefruit, citrus beurre blanc One of the first dishes in a while to really blow me away - truly magical. The scallop was cooked well and had a slight bite, but the true star was the sauce - a sweet and rich yet loose custard with grapefruit slivers. The bitterness from the grapefruit with the sweetness of the broth and the scallop altogether was beautiful and you needed every element together for the dish to work. My only critique is I wish the scallop had a harder sear. Filet Mignon: pommes puree, shallot confit, kale, demi-glace Standard is med-rare The sauce is bitter yet sweet and the confit shallow was pure sugar. The potatoes were very butter forward and the kale had no hint of bitterness. The filet was so tender and juicy it really is a well-rounded main course. Duck Breast: farro, baby turnip, baby carrot, green peppercorn sauce Bit of a let down. The end pieces were pretty salty and chewy, a bit off-putting The best part of the dish was the farro which was cooked perfectly, nice saltiness but added a textural element. The carrots and turnips were crucial to cut through the richness of the dish. I felt the duck was a bit game-y. French Toast: hazelnut creme anglaise, salted caramel ice cream The toast is essentially swimming in the hazelnut anglaise and was disappointing. I wanted it crispier to resist against soaking up all the liquid, but I will say the juxtaposition of the ice cream to the warm toast was a symphony in my mouth. Chocolat fondant: banana, rum raisin ice cream Aka chocolate lava cake; very intense chocolate flavor but the rum raisin doesn't come through well enough for there to be a distinction between that and plain vanilla. Overall, 7/10. This isn't my first time here, but it is my first time thinking through each bite and dish. There are things I think would elevate some dishes, but my favorite would definitely be either the mussels or scallops. Chapeau does seafood well and that's a fact. **Please consider checking out @leafynoms on instagram for more foodie reviews!**

My friends and I came on a busy night. We arrived early for our reservation so had a few cocktails at the bar. Once seated, we started our dinner with oysters which were very fresh! I think the star of the dinner was the multiple desserts that we shared! Our server was wonderful & attentive. We also met the owner who was lovely. Would definitely come back.

3.5 Stars Had a last minute dinner here and my favorite thing about this spot is their service. Staff is so friendly and bubbly, made the experience so much more worth it. We opted for the tasting menu with 3 courses. I think the first dish and the main dish were good enough, but definitely not the best I've ever had. The highlight dish was the dessert. Don't think I would come back in the near future just because the dishes lacked the "wow" factor, but the service here might change my mind!

Im a fan! Amazing food, great service & pretty cute ambiance. Everything we ordered was delicious and the perfect portion size. There was acid missing in a few dishes, I think that would have helped cut the richness. However, French food is notoriously heavy and Im here for it. We really loved the mussels & fries, it hit the spot. The dishes were well executed & the service was super friendly and attentive.

1: Appetizer bread with tomato sauce. The bread is French style, slightly sour and hard. You must dip it in the sauce. The sauce is slightly sweet, highlighting the tomatoes and also has a hint of pumpkin flavor. It is appetizing. 2: Pistachio vegetable salad with fried cheese. The salad part tastes very good. The sauce should be Ranch, which is sweet and sour (I will add pistachios to salads after this dish). The fried cheese is fishy. If you like salads, I recommend this dish. 3: Pan-fried scallops. If you choose 3, of course, you will skip this dish, but I recommend trying it. The scallops are cooked at the right time. The outer and bottom are slightly crispy, but the center is still soft and tender. The mixture makes the taste unique. With the sauce and citrus, the umami taste is more layered. The only drawback is that there is only one portion, which is gone in two or three bites. 4: Braised lamb leg with zucchini. This dish is not amazing, but the quantity is sufficient. The meat is very soft and rotten. According to the time of serving, it should be semi-prepared in advance, so the seasoning is heavy, highlighting the taste of lamb, but there is no fishy smell. The lamb should be couscous under it. It is also very good after absorbing the soup with the zucchini. If you don't like strong flavors, I recommend ordering something else. If you like lamb, you can try it. 5: Dessert: Fried toast with caramel chocolate ice cream. This is the only dish I don't recommend among the four dishes. The toast looks good, but it became soft after being soaked in the semi-melted ice cream. In addition, the ice cream is sweet. Normally, you should have a bite of dessert and a bite of hot tea as shown in the picture, but it's really good to have one cold and one hot. . . It's recommended to try other dessert options on the menu

My friend made reservations for my birthday and I was so glad she did. This place was absolutely amazing!!! I would definitely recommend making a reservation because they do get quite busy, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Our server was very sweet and he recommended the 3 course tasting menu so we could try a bunch of different items since it was my first time there. So we did that and everything tasted so delicious!! We even had a couple desserts to share, which were amazing! I definitely recommend getting the French toast to top of an amazing meal.

    Onion soup and escargot
    Thomson X.

I would give chapeau 4.5 stars overall. We started off with the escargot and onion soup. Escargot was soft in texture and garlicky which we liked. The onion soup was very rich in flavor and satisfying. For the mains, we ordered the lamb shank and cassoulet (pardon my spelling). I think both were very interesting dishes as my wife and were very familiar with these French dishes. The lamb was well braised and the cassoulet was very hearty and filling. I think both main dishes could be improved but I'm not sure how. Service was very nice and made the experience very enjoyable. Overall a nice dining experience.

Sad that this place has gone downhill....

The inside of the restaurant is charming, with plentiful bar seating to watch as dishes are prepared in front of you in an open kitchen. The menu itself is constantly evolving and may be different with every visit. That being said, the main menu is a prix fixe 4-course meal with the option to add on 2-3 additional dishes to share. The meal starts with a amuse-bouche, generally a cold soup. For us it was a chilled golden beet soup, which tasted a bit like a nice, creamy sweet corn. One of the add-ons was the pâté de campagne, a blend of pork and fatty liver. Paired with a dijon mustard and fresh sourdough bread, it was surprisingly elevated for such a simple dish. Next were a pair of fish dishes that were the highlights of the meal, including sierra mackerel with fennel and peach, and monkfish and smoked butter. The monkfish was a particular standout as it was coated with a dill sauce, and complimented with the sweetness of diced rhubarb and earthiness of hazelnuts. The monkfish featured a smoky and lightly spiced flavor. The dish was extremely well-balanced and paired sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and smoky to a tee. Really excellent. The octopus and yukon potato was an add-on - the octopus was extremely tender, not rubbery at all, and the potatoes were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft like a mashed potato on the inside. The meal ended with a hanger steak which was solid, but compared to the other dishes, less extravagant. The dessert featured a rose sorbet, with milk foam and strawberries. As a whole, Mijoté dishes are simple, layered and extremely satisfying to eat. While presentationally may not blow you away, the taste will leave you feeling satisfied. The blend of French and Japanese culinary tradition and cuisine, Mijoté is comforting, elevated, and balanced. Very rare to find fine-dining that tastes so great while also feeling homey at the same time. If in SF, absolutely worth a visit.

I didn't have that big of an appetite to try much else for appetizers or entrees. Maybe next time. The desserts are extremely sweet, more than I am used to. The things that knocked down some stars are weird particles in my beer that I noticed towards the end. My friend had the same beer with nothing. I've also had this beer many many times and there shouldn't be anything in it. There's also a lot of flies outside in the booths so it makes eating a bit annoying when you have to constantly swat around. The servers check up on you almost a little too much. By that I mean a different person coming up to the table to ask if you're done and when you say no, 5 min later, another comes up to ask the same thing. It felt like it was being rushed.

With most non-main dishes around $15, it's a great way to slowly snack the afternoon away. French Onion Soup: Packed full of flavor! They put a lot of care into the cooking the onions, since they were nicely caramelized. This helped the soup flavor profile. With the soaked bread and cheese on top, it was quite a hearty soup. Beef Tartar: It seemed like the meat was diced small by hand, not mechanically processed into ground beef, which is how it should be. It came to the table pre-mixed except for the quail egg on top. The flavor had a nice a Dijon mustard tang. The portion of crispy crostini was just right for the amount of meat (many places short change you on that). Roasted Bone Marrow: Looks primal, with one large bone cut cross sectionally and charred on top. They added some Dijon mustard and breadcrumbs before the broiling, which really enhanced the experience. A little goes a long way with this intense marrow spread of crostini. Escargot: Traditional preparation, but I was pleasantly surprised that they added double escargot in every buttery hole. At first I thought it was a mistake, but then realize it was by design as every hole was filled that way. Such a nice treat. Duck Confit Croquettes: Three crispy dense balls with lots of shreds of duck inside. Plus a very pleasant presentation of sauce and pistachios on top. While I liked all the flavors and textures, I wasn't a fan of the fact that inside duck was chilled. Wish the whole ball was warm. Strawberry Fruit Crumble: Not what I was expecting for a crumble. Was more like buttery cookie crumbled on top, but it actually worked. The real star were the fresh strawberries in three forms: diced, sauce and ice cream. So delicious!

Chicken Liver Mousse (4/5) drizzled with balsamic sauce and served with baguette, stone ground mustard, pickled red onions, and dill pickles. the pate itself was okay, it was very irony on its own, but as you build your little toasts with more toppings, it all comes together very well. Escargot (5/5) sooooo rich with buttery garlicy goodness topped with a breadcrumb and parmesan crust. this dish brings me back to Paris eating at an outdoor bistro. this goes wonderful on the chicken liver mousse bruschetta P.E.I Mussel Mariniere (5/5) White Wine, Shallots, Garlic, and Celery. This is a whole meal in itself! full of juicy mussels and plenty of that delicious white wine sauce on the bottom. i lowkey wanted to slurp the entire thing but that would be unsightly :) Service was very good. our server recommended a great bottle of white wine to enjoy with our food and he was happy to refill the pickled red onions and mustard upon request. since it was a Thursday afternoon, it wasn't as packed as the dinner crowd but i believe they have music on some weekends! great for date nights and small groups. take a walk on the great highway (sunset dunes) after your meal to end a great day!

Was busy as usual but I came with a group of two(highly recommended) as the seating was much faster than the larger parties. The portions for some of the entrees are huge so be mindful not to over order! We tried the mussels which were delicious and the sauce it came with was great with the fries from the hamburger. I found the burger to be way more luxurious than what you'd normally expect. Again be prepared some things can be quite large. we also tried the soup of the day which was this lovely tomato basil soup and the pork chop which was perfectly cooked with another great sauce that i kept on dipping the fries in. One last note is the atmosphere it definitely feels like a nice cozy cafe that makes you wanna stay and chat with ur neighbors. What really stood out to me was how different it felt from the typical 3 fixed course meal formats. I loved how flexible and customizable the menu was, and my husband and I were able to order completely different dishes throughout the night, which meant we got to try so many more items on the menu together. We had the beef tartare, glazed oysters, roast lobster, rosemary crusted tuna, and seared filet of beef, everything was delicious. The cheese platter was also a nice part of the experience, although I'm not a huge cheese person so I probably didn't appreciate it as much as others would. For dessert, we tried the baked chocolate soufflé and the French toast dessert, and the soufflé was definitely the better choice. Overall, such a fun and memorable dining experience with great food and service. I would definitely come back again.

Pay one price, order any combination of things. I would say that Charleston does it much better by including dessert for free. It is hard to justify wasting a full order on dessert. In addition, the food at Charleston just tastes way way better. The food was consistent, quite good but very very safe. Salt was generally lacking, which was very noticeable on two dishes- one, the branzino, while cooked perfectly, had absolutely no salt, relying instead on a very mild citrus sauce. Could have been excellent had they seasoned the fish. The filet was same, I finally caved and asked for salt on the side, and then I did enjoy it. The oysters were good but pretty basic.. tuna was fine. The lobster was a good lobster. Nothing exciting, but solid meal. I sat at the bar and the service was a bit lacking. For one, I was literally never asked how I was enjoying my meal? They came and went with dishes, and no engagement. Very odd. Near the end, I craved a palette cleaner, so I asked would they possibly bring me a tiny scoop of sorbet. They said, sure, and promptly charged me $12. Was it unreasonable? No, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Part of the joy of going to very nice places is that small requests can be accommodated without being nickel and dimed. Anyway I am glad I tried it. SF has many many better options.

Chicken sandwich was drenched inside with pesto and a few dry, very dry, slices of chicken that had jagged edges cutting throat on the way down. Fries were hard and overcooked. Mushroom omelette was wet and oily. Don't bother reserving seats because the host doesn't care. We reserved seats for two for inside. When I checked in with the blonde host who seems to embody stereotypical racist French charm, she told us rudely "this is your seat". It was a table outside on the sidewalk not even in the parklette that was directly in the sun. I was with my mother and she cannot be in direct sunlight so I kindly mentioned to her that we had reserved for inside or a shaded table outside would be fine too. She explained loudly that the table she gave us was the only one she had and they were very busy (wtf? What's the point of reservations?) Only after I Insisted did she then say we could wait. Meanwhile, other people were showing her what table they wanted and she warmly told them not to worry. There was also a two table seat outside under the shade--an older white couple who had paid but they were just taking their sweet time talking. She never bothered them. There was another two person table next to them with a "non white" couple and they hadn't even finished because they were packing up their leftovers but she asked them if they could move quickly because people were waiting!!! wtf? I asked if we could sit at one of those tables and she said no. Then she reluctantly sat us inside. Tiny tables very very closely next to others. When my mom sat down the table was literally a small hand width apart from another group that was eating so my mom apologized to the neighbors and moved the table toward the other side a little--the blonde host came to us and scolded us to please not move the table because people needed to get in to the other table which was still empty. At that point I had no understanding of why she was treating us this way. Ruined a beautiful Saturday. We just moved in to a house a couple blocks away. I was excited to have a place nearby to eat and bring friends and colleagues who visit. I have been here twice, once with friends, another with my mother. The friendliness and service here cannot beat even In N Out and the food is lackluster. Meanwhile, the service and food at Piccino in the presidio just a few min walk down is worth the extra effort if you live nearby. I hope the rude host has healed from whatever biases or scars she experienced in her past to treat us they way she did. Meanwhile, don't bother reserving outside or inside seats and certainly forget adding any note on your reservation to sit by the window etc because it doesn't matter. Maybe ---unless you fit the race or look the host cares to be attentive and human toward. I have several colleagues who live nearby and they all actually told me the same thing--to look elsewhere.
