Been to Chapeau a couple times during Restaurant Week and it's one of my consistent favorites! Do get the mussels and fries, the cassoulet and duck confit are definitely hearty options. They always make me and my guest feel special here and it's a perfect date night or anniversary spot!

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Chapeau seems like a your local neighborhood restaurants that has been here for years. I can see a lot of the people here are loyal customers. I wish they sat us in a cuter location. They sat us right next to the bar in an awkward table that was facing a cash register. The back had cuter vibes. Staff was very friendly and bubbly doe! Complementary Tomato Bisque Shot: 5/5 Honestly I wish I was able to order a bowl of this. THIS WAS AMAZING Yellow Corn Soup: 5/5 YUMMMAYYYY. On the sweeter side but i love it. Filet Mignon: 4/5 For some reason this dish tasted a bit asian. Meat was very tender, perfectly cooked to medium rare. Complementary Bread & Butter: 4/5 The norm. But eat this with the escargot and its 5/5! Escargot: 4/5 5/5 flavor! 4/5 because the escargot didn't come in a shell and was not as fresh. Branzino Meuniere: 3/5 Fish was perfectly cooked but it was over salted, very salty. The riz a l'ail was drowned in butter. Paper Plane: celebrity rating from friends cuz I don't drink alc. "3/5 for the taste, 4/5 for the alc content. STRONG." My girlies were tipsy after half the glass. Salade Lyonnaise: 3/5 This was alright. Pomegranate & Lime Mocktail: 3/5 Honestly just tasted like a regular lemonade. Nothing special.

I wish I had the experience most reviews rave about, but for me, it was pretty mid. On the plus side, we were seated in a corner away from the crowd, which was nice as the restaurant quickly filled up. The tables are quite close together, making it a bit of a squeeze to get in and out for restroom breaks (which I expected to look nicer). The 3- or 4-course option seems like the best value since you get to mix and match appetizers, entrées, and desserts. We started with a complimentary soup taster, which, paired with warm bread and butter, was actually my favorite part of the meal. I ordered the salade lyonnaise (a bacon salad that was a bit salty), the filet mignon (just okay), and the blueberry clafoutis (which I really enjoyed, it reminded me of bread pudding). I also tried the lamb, which I've recently started to appreciate, but this one was too gamey for my taste. By the end of the night, I was definitely full, but for the price, my taste buds weren't exactly impressed. Service was friendly, though they were very busy, and we had to wait quite a while for the check.

Read below for separate reviews of each dish. Do note: it took almost an hour between appetizers and mains and the overall dinner was pushing 3 hours... (a bit too long unfortunately) - if you're interested in more reviews follow @leafynoms on instagram Bread & Butter: outside was super crispy with a nice fluffy and aerated center; the crust itself was a bit harder than I remember but the butter is nicely salted. Amuse Bouche: pea and leek soup topped with truffle oil Soup was served cold and was very savory.. first the truffle flavor hit your tongue followed by the leeks and ending on a bit of a spice-note at the end Salmon Trio: cured salmon (gravlax) surrounding a mound of tart with salmon roe, eggs, and capers + creamy white sauce When eaten altogether it was creamy, salty, sweet and very texturally unique. There was true harmony in this dish and making sure you get a little of everything in each bite is crucial! Moules Frites: as an appetizer, came with ~15 mussels bathing in a beautifully rich butter sauce served with a side of crispy, salty French fries with an anchovy aioli. Mussels had soaked up the wonderful broth and were bursting with flavor, but the true star is the thick aioli - super rich and addicting, more savory than anything and reminded me of the umami of pate. Scallop: fennel confit, grapefruit, citrus beurre blanc One of the first dishes in a while to really blow me away - truly magical. The scallop was cooked well and had a slight bite, but the true star was the sauce - a sweet and rich yet loose custard with grapefruit slivers. The bitterness from the grapefruit with the sweetness of the broth and the scallop altogether was beautiful and you needed every element together for the dish to work. My only critique is I wish the scallop had a harder sear. Filet Mignon: pommes puree, shallot confit, kale, demi-glace Standard is med-rare The sauce is bitter yet sweet and the confit shallow was pure sugar. The potatoes were very butter forward and the kale had no hint of bitterness. The filet was so tender and juicy it really is a well-rounded main course. Duck Breast: farro, baby turnip, baby carrot, green peppercorn sauce Bit of a let down. The end pieces were pretty salty and chewy, a bit off-putting The best part of the dish was the farro which was cooked perfectly, nice saltiness but added a textural element. The carrots and turnips were crucial to cut through the richness of the dish. I felt the duck was a bit game-y. French Toast: hazelnut creme anglaise, salted caramel ice cream The toast is essentially swimming in the hazelnut anglaise and was disappointing. I wanted it crispier to resist against soaking up all the liquid, but I will say the juxtaposition of the ice cream to the warm toast was a symphony in my mouth. Chocolat fondant: banana, rum raisin ice cream Aka chocolate lava cake; very intense chocolate flavor but the rum raisin doesn't come through well enough for there to be a distinction between that and plain vanilla. Overall, 7/10. This isn't my first time here, but it is my first time thinking through each bite and dish. There are things I think would elevate some dishes, but my favorite would definitely be either the mussels or scallops. Chapeau does seafood well and that's a fact. **Please consider checking out @leafynoms on instagram for more foodie reviews!**

My friends and I came on a busy night. We arrived early for our reservation so had a few cocktails at the bar. Once seated, we started our dinner with oysters which were very fresh! I think the star of the dinner was the multiple desserts that we shared! Our server was wonderful & attentive. We also met the owner who was lovely. Would definitely come back.

3.5 Stars Had a last minute dinner here and my favorite thing about this spot is their service. Staff is so friendly and bubbly, made the experience so much more worth it. We opted for the tasting menu with 3 courses. I think the first dish and the main dish were good enough, but definitely not the best I've ever had. The highlight dish was the dessert. Don't think I would come back in the near future just because the dishes lacked the "wow" factor, but the service here might change my mind!

I celebrated my 30th birthday here, so this place already has a special spot for me. The owner is also the chef, and he's incredibly friendly. You can tell he really cares about what he's doing. He's also training his son, which I loved seeing. His son made the pâté en croûte in the pictures. I'd even recommend this place to a French person without hesitation. The food is top notch, the service feels genuine, and the atmosphere just makes you want to stay longer.

Im a fan! Amazing food, great service & pretty cute ambiance. Everything we ordered was delicious and the perfect portion size. There was acid missing in a few dishes, I think that would have helped cut the richness. However, French food is notoriously heavy and Im here for it. We really loved the mussels & fries, it hit the spot. The dishes were well executed & the service was super friendly and attentive.

1: Appetizer bread with tomato sauce. The bread is French style, slightly sour and hard. You must dip it in the sauce. The sauce is slightly sweet, highlighting the tomatoes and also has a hint of pumpkin flavor. It is appetizing. 2: Pistachio vegetable salad with fried cheese. The salad part tastes very good. The sauce should be Ranch, which is sweet and sour (I will add pistachios to salads after this dish). The fried cheese is fishy. If you like salads, I recommend this dish. 3: Pan-fried scallops. If you choose 3, of course, you will skip this dish, but I recommend trying it. The scallops are cooked at the right time. The outer and bottom are slightly crispy, but the center is still soft and tender. The mixture makes the taste unique. With the sauce and citrus, the umami taste is more layered. The only drawback is that there is only one portion, which is gone in two or three bites. 4: Braised lamb leg with zucchini. This dish is not amazing, but the quantity is sufficient. The meat is very soft and rotten. According to the time of serving, it should be semi-prepared in advance, so the seasoning is heavy, highlighting the taste of lamb, but there is no fishy smell. The lamb should be couscous under it. It is also very good after absorbing the soup with the zucchini. If you don't like strong flavors, I recommend ordering something else. If you like lamb, you can try it. 5: Dessert: Fried toast with caramel chocolate ice cream. This is the only dish I don't recommend among the four dishes. The toast looks good, but it became soft after being soaked in the semi-melted ice cream. In addition, the ice cream is sweet. Normally, you should have a bite of dessert and a bite of hot tea as shown in the picture, but it's really good to have one cold and one hot. . . It's recommended to try other dessert options on the menu

The inside of the restaurant is charming, with plentiful bar seating to watch as dishes are prepared in front of you in an open kitchen. The menu itself is constantly evolving and may be different with every visit. That being said, the main menu is a prix fixe 4-course meal with the option to add on 2-3 additional dishes to share. The meal starts with a amuse-bouche, generally a cold soup. For us it was a chilled golden beet soup, which tasted a bit like a nice, creamy sweet corn. One of the add-ons was the pâté de campagne, a blend of pork and fatty liver. Paired with a dijon mustard and fresh sourdough bread, it was surprisingly elevated for such a simple dish. Next were a pair of fish dishes that were the highlights of the meal, including sierra mackerel with fennel and peach, and monkfish and smoked butter. The monkfish was a particular standout as it was coated with a dill sauce, and complimented with the sweetness of diced rhubarb and earthiness of hazelnuts. The monkfish featured a smoky and lightly spiced flavor. The dish was extremely well-balanced and paired sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and smoky to a tee. Really excellent. The octopus and yukon potato was an add-on - the octopus was extremely tender, not rubbery at all, and the potatoes were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft like a mashed potato on the inside. The meal ended with a hanger steak which was solid, but compared to the other dishes, less extravagant. The dessert featured a rose sorbet, with milk foam and strawberries. As a whole, Mijoté dishes are simple, layered and extremely satisfying to eat. While presentationally may not blow you away, the taste will leave you feeling satisfied. The blend of French and Japanese culinary tradition and cuisine, Mijoté is comforting, elevated, and balanced. Very rare to find fine-dining that tastes so great while also feeling homey at the same time. If in SF, absolutely worth a visit.

Wanted a cappuccino but their espresso machine wasn't working during our visit, so we just had regular coffees. Kiddo ordered the pasta with smoked duck. Kiddo has a nut allergy so she was happy to hear that they do not use nuts in their pesto. I ordered the Lyonnaise Frisee as this is probably one of my most fave salads and decided to also add the smoked duck for more protein. Both dishes arrived at the same time, and they were decent portions. The smoked duck was tender. I enjoyed the salad. Kiddo enjoyed her pasta. Also ordered a croissant as had to give one a try. It was a flaky and buttery croissant - good. At no time did we feel rushed. Had to flag them down for more coffee, otherwise service was friendly. Would return to try other dishes.

Now it's sixteen years later. After an early start to a Sunday Valkyries game, my friend brought us here for a post game dinner. After finding a parking space a block away, we walked up a little after 6:30 pm. When I reached the entrance, I noticed the sketch board and wrote my name below the names and guest numbers already there. When I asked the hostess, she told me it was likely a twenty to thirty minute wait. The dining room was packed as well as the sidewalk tables and outdoor dining structure. Being hungry and antsy, I walked the various tables to observe the service progression to estimate when we'd be seated. About 35 minutes later, we were seated at the sidewalk table next to the entrance and given menus. It's been a while so a menu study was needed. After some discussion, we decided on our meals and agreed to share bites of each other's food. First came the Acme French baguette and butter (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=b_xeRM764lejQiCnELp7OA), a necessary vehicle to sop any gravy or sauce. Two of us had the French onion soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=rJ9tQeC9Al9A0yCiHnA3Fw); it was as I remember, hearty broth chocked with tasty onions with gooey stretchy cheese underneath a nicely browned top. Their staple is consistent with what I remember. My friend ordered the Les Moules 24, poulette (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=ZgxJSrYmiEuwipp8uvkJHA), garlic, shallots, bacon, white wine, cream, parsley; the mussels were good, most if not all opened shells in a variety of sizes. The sauce or broth is the key especially with the baguette slices to enjoy the delicious flavors. For my main meal, i had the pork chop (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=tk0gypyufB2AL0olq-KPHA), Brussels sprouts, bacon, apple cider mustard sauce, suggested and cooked medium; I really enjoyed this as it had a nice outside sear while the meat was tender and still juicy after I cut in. The flavors from the accompaniments paired well and the portions were generous. In fact, a fellow diner mostly ate the accompaniments as our shared format in trying the other dishes filled my tummy. I tried a few bites of my friend's roasted duck confit, French fries (subbed from potatoes gratin), haricot vert, port reduction; sorry, no photo as this disappeared relatively quickly; the duck was tender and fork tender with a smoky flavor as it came right off the bone. I also tried another diner's fettucine, creamy white wine sauce, mushrooms (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=X5em6PctUtXUbiuM7uLmPg); the balance of sauce to pasta was perfect and you know me and mushrooms. It was tasty and is definitely hearty, portions and taste wise. As we dined, more diners added their names to the wait list until there were only two names left when we left around 8:30 pm. The guests were a mix of neighborhood locals and sports fans who came from events since Chase Center and Oracle Park are nearby. I saw a table with guys wearing Giants and Braves jerseys. Thanks to J. Garen who waited on our table and the bus staff who cleared empty plates and bowls and refilled out water glasses. Big thanks for Naomi, the hostess, who kept all waiting guests updated and kept a watchful eye to make sure the tables turn efficiently. As we left, we greeted waiting guests in Valkyries jerseys and we briefly talked about the game and, of course, gave our "Go Valks" cheer. Looking forward to our next meal here.

It's a cool location near Fisherman's Wharf, but it's not touristy. It feels old-school SF. Service is wonderful, of course. I like that it's a customizable tasting menu. You can pick 3-5 courses! There'll be something for everyone. The lobster and duck were wonderful. The Squab pasta was fine, but not as good as the other mains. The desserts (including the souffle) were such a treat! So light and fluffy. Best souffle I've had in SF! They were accommodating to my mom's allergies. Staff handled a misbehaving child so well. She carried him and walked around! I will be back for sure! They also gave us Pineapple cakes to take home.

As everyone knows, we're foodies, and we thought that coming to Gary Danko would be a very special memorable meal here in the city, and while there were certainly positive moments of our two hour dinner, overall, I would not return. We arrived a bit early for our 6pm reservation, and we were seated promptly at a deuce in the side, dimly lit dining room. The decor was all mirrors and dark abstract paintings - heavy, and a tad depressing. My mom sat in the booth and I took the chair. I could see my mom, and a door to the street that was diagonally to my left, and it was a bit off-putting because at one point a pedestrian used the door as a mirror, and she was picking her teeth. A curtain to shield this vestibule from the dining area would be a welcome addition. Additionally, GD's flowers are lovely, and I appreciate the attention to detail there, but the extremely tall arrangement next to our table was all vase and the pretty flower arrangement was so close to the ceiling that all I could see was water unless I craned my neck upwards to peer at the blooms. Anyway, the dining experience commenced as soon as we sat down, when the spring pea gazpacho amuse bouche was brought to the table. It was refreshing, but nothing overwhelming. It really felt rushed, and this too, set the tenor for the evening. Despite my reservations, we took a few minutes to peruse the menu, and then decided on the four course option. I ordered: Glazed Oysters - Deliciously buttery, extremely buttery - in fact, butter is the primary ingredient in the majority of the dishes. If you don't like butter, don't come here! Lobster Risotto -tasty & generous portion-size Roast Maine Lobster - Also buttery, I did not need the shells to be on the plate as they did not add anything to the dish, and instead got in the way of enjoying the buttery potato puree. Shells are not a garnish. Chocolate Souffle - with dark chocolate and vanilla sauce - I wanted top layer to be a little crispier, and it was a little too soupy - it needed more time in the oven. Mom ordered: Tuna Carpaccio - Fresh and simple - her favorite dish. Scallops - Too salty and there were only two scallops, disappointing. Duck - Very salty, unattractive plate - Duck was prepared well but the crust it was smothered in took away the fine flavor of the duck itself. She could not finish the sides due to the saltiness. I told one of the servers about this, and nothing was done. No apology, nada. Chocolate Souffle - Same notes as me, too soupy and crust not crisp enough. We each had a glass of Prosecco to accompany the meal, and it was fine. Gill was our lead server and he did a good job of taking care of us. Overall, the service was very good, and I do want to recognize the folks working on the floor for their attentiveness. My bread plate and water glass were always full, and I appreciate that I did not want for anything while in this restaurant. Gill even showed me the way to the ladies room, and opened the door for me, which was a first. The little pastries that were given to us after the souffle were cute, but we had no room for them, so we had to have them boxed. We also appreciated the little pineapple cream cakes that were given to us as a parting gift. I really had high hopes for this restaurant, but upon reflection, Gary Danko did not deliver the experience that I expected from an establishment with this price point. I have had absolutely perfect meals before at places like 11 Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern, Le Cirque, and the former La Grenouille in NYC, and the Ritz in Paris among others, where attention is paid to absolutely very detail of the dining experience from start to finish and even beyond. I guess I should have known better to come here when they lost their Michelin star, but again, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I will not make this mistake again.

There's small seating area downstairs with bar type seating (not a bar, just bar-type) and pretty booth in their front window. Also some outside seating and regular tables on the second floor. The ambiance is rustic and perfect for a brunch. Looks like a historic building with hard wood floors. We wore jeans and nice tops. A sundress would have been a good choice if the weather was better. We ordered bone marrow app and charcuterie. Both were unbelievably delicious. The marrow was unctuous and plentiful. Charcuterie was not the typical cured meats. It included pate, French salami, and cured duck breast. The pate was the best I've ever had. Husband ordered scrambled eggs which were cooked French style soft with bacon. I ordered the French toast which was covered in strawberry, blueberry, real whipped cream and a little drizzle of strawberry sauce. No syrup. The bread had some sort of embedded custard, which was on another level delicious. Service was efficient and friendly. This is a restaurant for foodies. The physical space leans into rustic rather than fancy, while the food is gourmet, comforting and worth the visit. It's well located and only 5 minutes walk to Macy's. I think I'm going to obsess on this meal and find a way to visit again soon, even though I'm from out of town.
