Mother-daughter day and we decided to have brunch at Galinette. We were seated pretty quickly upon arrival and noticed a few specials posted outside and on a small sign on the wall. Wanted a cappuccino but their espresso machine wasn't working during our visit, so we just had regular coffees. Kiddo ordered the pasta with smoked duck. Kiddo has a nut allergy so she was happy to hear that they do not use nuts in their pesto. I ordered the Lyonnaise Frisee as this is probably one of my most fave salads and decided to also add the smoked duck for more protein. Both dishes arrived at the same time, and they were decent portions. The smoked duck was tender. I enjoyed the salad. Kiddo enjoyed her pasta. Also ordered a croissant as had to give one a try. It was a flaky and buttery croissant - good. At no time did we feel rushed. Had to flag them down for more coffee, otherwise service was friendly. Would return to try other dishes. read more

The absolute best way to indulge after a visit to the zoo nearby. The perfect slow French cafe vibe, where they'll actually follow your request to pace your dishes in your own custom course list. With most non-main dishes around $15, it's a great way to slowly snack the afternoon away. French Onion Soup: Packed full of flavor! They put a lot of care into the cooking the onions, since they were nicely caramelized. This helped the soup flavor profile. With the soaked bread and cheese on top, it was quite a hearty soup. Beef Tartar: It seemed like the meat was diced small by hand, not mechanically processed into ground beef, which is how it should be. It came to the table pre-mixed except for the quail egg on top. The flavor had a nice a Dijon mustard tang. The portion of crispy crostini was just right for the amount of meat (many places short change you on that). Roasted Bone Marrow: Looks primal, with one large bone cut cross sectionally and charred on top. They added some Dijon mustard and breadcrumbs before the broiling, which really enhanced the experience. A little goes a long way with this intense marrow spread of crostini. Escargot: Traditional preparation, but I was pleasantly surprised that they added double escargot in every buttery hole. At first I thought it was a mistake, but then realize it was by design as every hole was filled that way. Such a nice treat. Duck Confit Croquettes: Three crispy dense balls with lots of shreds of duck inside. Plus a very pleasant presentation of sauce and pistachios on top. While I liked all the flavors and textures, I wasn't a fan of the fact that inside duck was chilled. Wish the whole ball was warm. Strawberry Fruit Crumble: Not what I was expecting for a crumble. Was more like buttery cookie crumbled on top, but it actually worked. The real star were the fresh strawberries in three forms: diced, sauce and ice cream. So delicious! read more

Chicken Liver Mousse (4/5) drizzled with balsamic sauce and served with baguette, stone ground mustard, pickled red onions, and dill pickles. the pate itself was okay, it was very irony on its own, but as you build your little toasts with more toppings, it all comes together very well. Escargot (5/5) sooooo rich with buttery garlicy goodness topped with a breadcrumb and parmesan crust. this dish brings me back to Paris eating at an outdoor bistro. this goes wonderful on the chicken liver mousse bruschetta P.E.I Mussel Mariniere (5/5) White Wine, Shallots, Garlic, and Celery. This place is excellent and far exceeded my expectations for a French restaurant in outer sunset area! It is located near the L, so easy enough to travel to and from for those not located in the area. Lots of street parking too. This place was packed for a cold Saturday night with a large party accommodated in the "upper" dining room (just a few steps). So that's good to know for the future. Their service is excellent. The server walked us through their specials and helped to pair wine with our meals. That night they had a beef cheek pasta dish and Bouillabaisse which was paired with one of the BEST red wines I've ever had. It was a Syrah. So delicious. A++ for a date night restaurant. read more

This place is so cozy and quirky, I loved the details of the restaurant and the hospitality was great. We ordered a good variety of food and they had specials when we came in and they were so good. My favorite was our seafood medley with puff pastry, the sauce and seafood soaked in well and the steak and fries with the green peppercorn sauce was savory and balanced. Service in the restaurant really gave a family vibe and they were so knowledgeable about food and wine. We decided to try Galinette as we've seen it on Yelp for a while and wondered if it was good, we parked on the street since there's no parking nearby. We came in to a pretty empty restaurant with some people on the other side of it. We got the escargot, chicken and a burger and beef tartare, and the escargot was average. Not much flavor but wasn't too bad to be honest. The reason why I gave it a 3 was the service, it wasn't bad but it was very uninviting, the people who was helping us didn't seem enthusiastic to have served us and kept a very straight and monotone voice was talking to us. half way through it felt like they wanted us to leave. Overall this was a decent place. For the food: the chicken was huge! though it was very standard and pretty dry in certain parts, the burger was much better in my opinion and actually worth getting maybe with some fries but they are 7$. We went here after a nice day at the beach. I've waited a week to post this review so I've had time to calm down and edit my emotions out of it. The food was ok but the service was terrible. We got seated fairly quickly around 7, no reservations but they weren't full. Our experience started off badly right from here as when the owner/manager? placed our utensils down I immediately picked up my spoon and handed it back since there was a substantial quantity of green stringy vegetables still stuck to the back of the spoon. The owner did not seem apologetic about this, but more annoyed he had to go replace my spoon, not apologizing for giving me an unsanitary utensil. Strike 1. While our order was taken fairly quickly, it was quite a while before any food came out. And I mean any food and quite a while. We were offered the bread and butter, they do charge for it here and don't tell you but we anticipated that, but ended up having to ask about it's status twice after at least a 20 min wait. We got the French Onion to share, and it was quite good. We finished it pretty fast, but apparently not fast enough. Most restaurants will fire your entrees while you eat your appetizer, not here. We finished our soup and bread and waited an additional 30 minutes for our entrees. The table next to us sat down after us and received their entrees about 10 min before we did. When I asked about this because we had ordered similar food, the owner just said it was because we'd ordered the appetizer. They weren't swamped, but they were busy. Still, no servers came to explain the delay in our food. Of note, we observed a table further down from us who had also been seated after us also receive their food before us but not begin eating and seemed upset. About 10 minutes later the owner brought them their missing appetizer and then they began to eat. So definitely not an isolated case. Strike 2. When our entrees finally came we were starving. It started off good, I really liked my steak and fries and my wife initially liked her salmon. But when she got to the middle of the salmon we found it very undercooked. When I called the owner over he barely let us get a word out and just said they always cook their salmon to medium rare. He did immediately ask if we'd like it cooked a bit more and my wife said yes. I'm not sure if this is true or the owner was just making it up. Fish isn't normally one of the dishes I'd expect cooked medium rare, even if the fish is sashimi grade. It's usually noted on the menu if it is. When we got it back it was more cooked, but still not cooked all the way through. We didn't end up finishing the salmon. Strike 3. We were pretty sour by this point, but wanted to end on a better note so we gave them a chance on dessert. So we got the seasonal fruit crumble. It was fresh strawberry ice cream with cookie crumble (like you'd get on a pie), which was actually pretty good. Overall I'm very disappointed and unsure if I'd give this place another try. If the food and service had been better then this would be a solid 4 star place. As it was, bluntly I've had better experiences at chain restaurants for significantly less money (total bill before tax+tip was over $100 for just the 2 of us). So for that price I'm expecting much better service and food quality. read more

This is the type of casual French cafe you'd expect to see in a quaint village in Bordeaux except I saw a rather pricy Loco Moco on their menu. The presence of this Hawaiian staple gave me momentary pause and reminded me I was in the Outer Sunset. It's been around for over a year, but I noticed it only recently when I took the L MUNI line to 66th and Taraval. There was a very welcoming vibe here with big windows, terrace seating, and a split-level dining room with a communal table in the higher space. I decided to have lunch before embarking on my Sunset Dunes walk. I started with the $4 Arnold Palmer which provided me with the right level of refreshment on an unusually balmy day (Photo 8). I ordered the $13 French Onion Soup, and it didn't disappoint. The country crock arrived with the melted Gruyere cheese still bubbling on top. The baguette was floating helplessly underneath the cheese layer, and the beef broth was full of onions and all the other ingredients that make it a classic (Photo 10). The $16 Lyonnaise Frisée, however, fell short due to the overpowering flavor of the vinaigrette which contained too much red wine vinegar for my taste. I can't lay blame on the frisée, bacon bits, or the poached eggs, all present and accounted for (Photo 9). That left me with a split decision on the food, but I had no complaints about the attentive service. The menu overall is a bit too uniquely appetizing to ignore for too long, so another visit is likely. I think the Steak Frites might be worth trying. Not sure about the Loco Moco. The interior of Galinette is so cute! I went there for lunch with a friend on a weekday and was seated right away. Service is friendly and familiar, and the menu is easy to read. One room has a wall of wine and honestly, the decor of the restaurant itself made the lunch more fun than it already was. People watching from the windows was really nice, as well. My heart was set on the french onion soup, and the serving size is perfect for one person. It's oniony, rich, and cheesy! Real nice and warm for an overcast day. My friend ordered the escargot puff pastry for himself, and he said it was nice and creamy, warm, and the puff pastry helped with all of the creamy richness of the dish. We shared wild mushroom medly and the whole roasted air chilled chicken. The mushrooms were buttery and garlicky, so good! And the chicken was cooked perfectly, not a bit of dryness at all on the inside. The green beans had a nice snap to them, which I love in vegetables. Came on a Sunday afternoon and no wait. Staff promptly sat us outside with my parents and dog. We order and water for humans and dog came quickly. The food came pretty shortly after. All were a bit salty. Both french onion soup and the fake bouillabaisse was too salty for parents to drink. They sat us down right away and helped us get the baby chair. It wasn't busy weirdly but it should be! The waitress was the nicest I've had in a long time. She was very kind and gave us recommendations. I got the wine she recommended and I ended up taking home a bottle. I tried the daily special salad and it was very very good. I was pleasantly surprised. The beef tartar was delicious, on par with ones from high end restaurants where they charge $45. My partner got the Bourride and said he liked it. Galinette is a cute little French bistro near the beach on the corner of Taraval and 46th. I stopped by last week to check it out for lunch and was seated right away. I ordered the Hand Cut Beef Tartare which was served with a quail egg and crostinis and the PEI Mussels Mariniere served in a white wine sauce with an added order of fries. The beef tartare had good flavor but the hand cut was a bit too big for me to enjoy. The mussels were fresh but the sauce was just ok... husband confirmed this when he tried the sauce on a separate occasion. Service was very friendly, ambiance was airy and welcoming, but the food was just ok imo. I'm definitely open to trying other things on the menu such as the steak frites or le burger, perhaps I'll have to give those items a try another time. read more

It's a small space but the tables weren't too crowded. We ordered the burger and the steak frites. The burger flavor combo of brie, bacon, and onions was nice, and the garlic aoli was tasty. The negatives- When I ordered the burger, the server asked "Do you want it with fries or salad?" To me, this indicates that the side is included with the $21 dish. I was shocked to see a $5 charge on the bill for mixed greens with only dressing. I ordered the latte with a double shot (standard everywhere I buy coffee) and found this was also an additional charge. Furthermore, my partner asked if they had Diet Coke and they said yes, but then served a Pepsi or other off-brand... We also ordered the bread service, expecting it to be a starter, and it was served along with our entrees. The bread was verging on stale and the "paprika salted butter" just had a sprinkle of seasoning on top, enough for one swipe. Definitely a miss! Both the burger patty and the steak were undersalted. Galinette (aka Gurnard) is a particularly interesting looking fish that the Marseillais put into their famous fish stew, the bouillabaisse, so this restaurant is named after that fish and their whimsical wall art definitely features this. I see you semi naked mermaid fish with the red beak lips. My favorite dish here was the escargot puff pastry with cream of mushroom. We totally housed this. Give us another! The French onion soup was scrumptious with lots of melting cheese. The Jambon Beurre is interesting. I like and dislike this version. This is a popular sandwich in France, so of course like they say about certain body parts, we all have an opinion. A light sandwich with lots of butter with mustard and pickles. I usually love this but this version they also put potatoes. I'm not a fan of potatoes in a sandwich (or in any wraps). The roasted bone marrow dish is perfect. Very rich. Lastly we added on the roasted chicken with Brussels sprouts and Dijon mustard sauce. To be fair, we added this order midway through our meal and could be they were super busy that day or we were not aware of how much time this dish would take, but this chicken dish took more than 45 mins to an hour to arrive so we took it mostly to-go and skipped dessert because the wait was too long. I am currently disabled and unable to travel so my husband and I thought hey, we live in SF, why not look for authentic French food here at home? So we find Galinette on google and decide to try it out. We came in at a weird time (Monday, 2:30pm ) and I felt awkward about it but the staff were really nice! We were greeted by a friendly "Bonjour" when we popped in and they were so great about helping us portion (and even time!) the food since we wanted to try a bunch of things. We got a couple coffees, chicken liver pate, French onion soup and special not-Bouillabaisse seafood soup. I'm not as much of a seafood person as my husband but I loved the mussels. We also got the jambon sandwich to go (for dinner) which I am eating right now as I type. I think this is my first time having French mayonnaise and it is SO good. The tartare was fresh and full of flavor, and the jambon beurre was outstanding with tender, delicious pork. I was immediately transported to France as soon as I stepped into Galinette. The decorations and the tables outside reminded me of all the cafes in Paris and set us up for a really nice meal. The French onion soup was hearty, cheesy, and perfect for those chilly SF days. The duck croquettes was so interesting, I never had duck prepared this way into little balls but what I really loved about it was the sauce. I was stuck between the burger and the jambon beurre and decided to go to the burger. The cheese was a little strong for me but it did pair excellently with the onion aioli and bacon. This is a very cute, little French bistro tucked away on the corner of Taraval and 46th Ave right by Great Highway. Parking is a challenge since most of the surrounding area is residential. A friend recommended this place for dinner on a weeknight. There were three of us and we all started with the French onion soup. A couple of us ordered the mussels with white wine and shallots with a side of fries to share. The other ordered the steak and frites. The French onion soup was good, slightly above average compared to other French bistros. My friend enjoyed his steak, although medium rare turned out to be more well done. The broth in my mussels was flavorful but the mussels had too much sand. Almost every one of my mussels came with a complimentary side of sand. Sadly this caused me unpleasantness during the meal since I was too focused on making sure I didn't bite down on any sand. Service was friendly and average. Happy to have a new French bistro in Parkside - something different than the usual Asian or Italian fare nearby. My first time here, everything I ordered was delicious, which is rare! The warm bread with butter, escargots in puff pastry with mushroom sauce, roasted bone marrow, and mussels on white wine sauce. Everything paired perfectly with my glass of white wine. My hubby ordered the French onion soup, steak frites, and a bread pudding for dessert, and our son ordered a chicken sandwich. Came back again because I was dreaming of the puff pastry - the flaky pastry paired with the escargots in a rich creamy mushroom sauce. This time I visited with a girlfriend, and for our main course, we spilt a salad. It was a perfect sharing portion. Do not expect American portions here as portion sizes are very French. Hubby was disappointed with the size of his steak for the steak frites. The service is friendly and the staff are great with wine recommendations. It takes a bit longer than expected for such a small restaurant to serve the food. I love the open kitchen and graphics on the walls, but the restaurant itself could use some sound acoustics - it's a bit loud when the restaurant is full with all the cement walls (and is almost always full). Returned to Galinette for a birthday celebration and we tried the bone marrow and escargot for appetizers along with a number of main dishes-all were amazing with the exception of the kid's pasta which was overly bland. I'm happy we stopped by Galinette for a weekday dinner. There are two sides to the restaurant with one side having a communal table. The staff was very friendly as they took our order. We got the bread service, French onion soup, steak frites, and the 1/2 chicken. I really enjoyed the French onion soup which was packed with flavor. The steak was cooked a good medium rare with a sweeter flavor due to the onions on top. My 1/2 chicken meal was so large, I had to take the rest home, but it was perfectly juicy, served with roasted brussel sprouts. If you order it, you may want to consider sharing the dish. We didn't stay for dessert but many people ordered the bread pudding a la mode which looked delicious! read more

First time here, Friday lunch. Nice ambiance on the corner with some indoor and outdoor seating and an open layout. Friendly service and amazing French food. We tried the French onion soup, which did not disappoint! It was everything my wife wanted in a French onion soup, and she's quite the FOS expert. For main, we shared the tuna sandwich (fresh Acme bread so good!), and hanger steak and frites. It was a great "surf and turf" for us, quite filling. The hangar steak had flavorful red wine onion sauce. Got a chocolate croissant to go. We'll definitely be back! The bone marrow seems popular here, did not try but next time. read more
