This place is amazing. They make a good Bullet Rye Old Fashioned. The salad with house Italian and blue cheese crumbles was outstanding. I would go back just for the salad, It's that good. I had steak Diane served with sautéd vegetables and mashed potatoes. I would have preferred less gravy on my steak but the flavor was outstanding and very tinder. My server was very attentive. I had a nice view of their pond which is stocked with Japanese catfish. The Resturant feels very upscale but you can come in wearing jeans and a T-shirt. I would highly recommend this place. Not real high just a little higher than I would expect. They have big selection of wine for those who like to have wine with dinner. The meal was good and service was also good. Always number one for us! Excellent service and the best steaks in southern WV. You have to try the shrimp chowder. Confused and disappointed by their lack of bussers in an eatery where busser support is a no-brainer. Hopefully this is a momentary thing and not some form of business decision. This has GOT to be the best steakhouse in WV. In fact I get Garden and Gun magazine and they thought that The Wonderbar in the Clarksburg Bridgeport area was and since I had to be up there we went. It was terrible. I'm not going to waste time on that disaster. But the char is fantastic. It serves prime beef and I like the bracciole which is classically a slice of filet stuffed with breadcrumbs seasoned with Parmesan cheese salt pepper and then rolled up and grilled As you like it, I prefer medium. the sides were sugar snap peas and fettucine. My problem was that I was starving and cut too big a bite of the meat. A disaster was averted by their fantastic waitress, Debbie. My companion got a filet cooked rare with a mushroom Marsala sauce. It came with mashed potatoes sprinkled with parsley.as for Ambience, it's a quiet place,and its location overlooks a pond with water lilies and I have seen different water birds in it. I decided on Char after searching Yelp for steakhouses in Beckley, West Virginia. Yelp has never failed me before and it didn't this time. I needed a nice restaurant for my sisters sixty-ninth birthday and Char fit the bill. The service was good and the staff was attentive. We started the night with the fried oysters. They were good but something was missing (I think it needed a little Tobasco). For our entrees, I order the ribeye and fettuccine Alfredo. That ribeye was cooked a perfect medium and y'all it was so tasty. Three ordered shrimp, and one ordered crab cakes. There wasn't a complaint at the table. As a matter of fact, it was quiet because everyone was stuffing their face. The service was really good and our server Theresa was great. If you're ever in Beckley, WV, go check them out. read more

RRR and I were on a quick visit to see old friends in Virginia and stopped in Beckley WVa for an overnight on the way home. As most of us do, I researched restaurants on the way there and found this little gem. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. We won!! The restaurant is just a hop, skip and a jump from I64 at a very busy exit. There are lots of hotels and eateries in the area but you needn't drive too far past all of the chains to find this spot. We drove in on a curvy tree lined drive to the restaurant and found the place very busy on a Saturday night (7:30 pm mid October). We had almost no wait but I think we were just lucky. To the gist, we both had a glass of decent wine (most sold by the bottle), and asked for our bread early (hot Italian from the oven). We ordered our meals of the special side salad, small 5 oz filet, medium rare, brussel sprouts for me, baked potato for RRR. The salads came fairly quickly but with an apology from waitress Deb for coming out slowly. I had asked for no Romano cheese, no bacon and dressing on the side (with my own apologies for being so picky) and it was perfect. Our dinner was truly slow to arrive but understandably so with such a crowd. We really enjoyed watching the well orchestrated dining room staff attending to all the other diners, especially the older of the two who cleared and reset tables, poured water etc. He was a master and a delight to observe! All of the staff seems attentive and well trained. Kudos to them and to the owners. Our salads were very good, our filets even better. The brussel sprouts and baked potato, shared between us, were also good. Altogether it was an unexpected and very fine experience all round. My only negative was the table of 6 plus who came in t shirts, men in ball caps turned around backwards and bringing a toddler at 9 pm. Nothing anyone can do about that, just obnoxious. Don't do it. We were told this was once THE place to go in Beckley, both meaning the best and the only fine dining place from about 30 years ago. I'm guessing they haven't updated much in the 30 years as it has an interesting yesteryear vibe. I was hoping the food would be in keeping with this or at least match the significant sum they asked for it. Sadly, it did not. The bone in rib-eye steak at a hair under $36 had a lot of grizzle. Honestly, my first thought was that it reminded me of the last cheap steak I had at a Waffle House while on the road. It had decent grill marks, it was cooked properly and it was presented in a style keeping with their decor, just the quality wasn't there, same with the sides, same with my fiancé's chicken, same with the appetizer. So, if you have money to burn and you want to pay a lot for presentation, this might be the place for you. If you want the quality that most have come to expect for a $100 dinner for two (one glass of wine for her and no dessert) particular in a smaller town like this, I'd encourage you to look else where. read more

Great 49th birthday dinner this year..my girlfriend and I started making this our annual birthday tradition every year..we had great service and even better food..she had the brascoli and I had the filet mignon both where perfect! I come to the Beckley, WV every few months for work. I prefer to dine at locally owned restaurants versus chains you can get anywhere. I was pleasantly surprised when I googled Char and saw the great reviews, so I knew I had to pay them a visit. I went for a late dinner on a Wednesday and had a very good dinner and experience. I elected to sit at the bar at this cozy establishment that sits back a driveway from the main road. Very well lit and easy to find. The setting in the wooded area is perfect. I was immediately greeted by Shawna the bartender. I ordered a glass of Shiraz and let me say, this was not a light pour so you feel like you're getting your moneys worth. It was tasty and smooth. I did peak at the menu online beforehand; they have quite the array of choices! I decided to go with the surf and turf (lobster and a 5 oz filet). I started with a house salad with their homemade creamy Italian dressing per Shawna's recommendation. I do like a good house dressing. It came out with a lot of tomatoes on top, so I was confused. Just as a heads up, the dressing is more what I'd call a zesty Italian with an orange hue to it. It's good, but not what you'd expect with a creamy Italian. Also, the house salad comes with blue cheese and bacon. (I had to send mine back since I can't eat blue cheese.) My main meal of the surf and turf was delicious! The lobster was tender with the melted butter and a pretty good size too. The filet was cooked to my request and tasty. I got a baked potato with butter and what appeared and tasted like homemade sour cream. The garlic toast was perfectly crisp and delicious. Dessert was to die for! They informed me that most of their desserts are homemade, which is even better. I ordered the pistachio ice cream pie and it was soooo good that I didn't want to finish it. I travel for work and passing through Beckley, I Yelped this quaint little GEM!! My server, Christine, was an absolute joy and her recommendations were spot on! The food: The house salad (a 40+ year old fixture) was amazing. The veal parmesan was perfectly cooked and bathed in a flavorful red sauce. I finished with the bread pudding, served with half brandy sauce and half cream. It was just like grandma used to make!! Savory; the bread is soft and not soggy.
