The only REAL Asian food establishment in Windsor, CT. I have been to the others in town and none compare to the menu at Char Koon Noodle Express. It's primarily a take-out/delivery joint. You can eat in. The ambiance is not romantic or cozy. What it lacks in ambiance it truly makes up for it in the taste, quality and portion sizes. The menu has something for most. The House Noodles (no shrimp please) are my go-to! They were my late husband's fave (with shrimp) and you do get a very nice portion. As with everything I have ever ordered, and I've lived in Windsor 23 years, things are cooked to your request, they are thorough, and best of all I have never had to wait forever to pick up my order. They have expanded their menu! They participate with popular delivery services. I choose to pick up as I have the time to and do not like others handling my order. In my reviews of Chinese/Polynesian food my gold standard is always General Tso's (then fried rice and pork egg roll). This is the best in the area. There is another place across the river about 5 minutes away that is as good, but nobody towards the Farmington Valley area comes close to this General Tso's. Currently during Covid there is no sit down lunch, just take away but that just gives the dish time to cool so I do not burn the roof of my mouth! My favorite. read more

Not good at all! Tried the. Black pepper chicken and it was just really soggy and slimy. It hardly tasted like chicken at all. I also got their vegetable fried rice which they charged extra for and that wasn't really good either. Small restaurant- you can dine in or carry out. It's not an upscale it's very casual. Service is okay it could be better but it wasn't trrrible. Food was made pretty quickly. You go up and order at the register then wait for your food. Best Chinese my family has had in a long time!! We are new to Windsor and were not happy with some other Chinese places in town (Peking House looking at you). We got boneless spare ribs, crab rangoons, general tso's and pad thai. The portions were huge!! The pad thai was amazing and had so much flavor. We had leftovers for 2 days. The ribs werent dry and packed with delicious sauce, cooked to perfection. Only thing that was so-so were the rangoons. Prices though are wildly expensive for chinese so knocking off a star...three meals cost $70 where a normal place would be $30-$40. But will be back here again. I must have caught this resto on a bad night, I've never had a more disappointing meal in a Chinese restaurant. The hot and sour soup was ok, not the best I've had and that goes for the egg roll as well. The King Pao Chicken was borderline awful, with a dark salty flavorless sauce that just did not make any sense what soever. The chicken had a coating similar to General Tso's certainly nowhere near as tasty as I have had elsewhere, I've never seen that done. In my opinion the chicken had been prepared in advance and reheated as it was tough, stringy and bore no taste resemblance to chicken at all. The fried rice, again I just don't get it, insipid, total lack of flavor. Most of this meal I dumped in the trash, I've never been in a situation where I have had to do that. Have had lunch here, maybe a half a dozen times. Have never had a dish I disliked. Today I tried Noodes with Wonton and Spicy Pork ($6.55) - a very nice dish of angel hair noodles with meat wontons, shredded pork, and garnished with spinach. The wontons and pork were outstanding, the angel hair was angel hair (no more and no less), and the brown sauce was thin and could have used a little more flavor. Overall, it was a good dish, and a pretty decent value considering you get an egg roll or soup too included with the price. Service? Well the lady who works in the back and doesn't come up front too much is a delight- always smiling and cheerful and genuinely glad to see you. The high profile young guy up front who does most of the customer interactions (dine in order taking & phone orders) really needs to chill a bit. He mumbles and is hard to understand and has zero personality. He asked me two times "egg roll or soup" and I didn't understand him either time. After the second mis-connection, he sighed a very audible sigh and pointed to the menu so I could read "egg roll or soup". What a nice mix of immaturity and rudeness........ When the phone rings for an order he rattles off the words "Char Koon" so fast you'd think he was on a game show with the clock running out. We've all heard that studies have shown that if you talk to someone on the phone, your phone mate can tell if you're smiling or not by the tone of your voice. The best part of my experience today was the clean and functional handicap accessible bathroom. Automatic door and emergency pull string, real liquid soap, paper towels, and support handles. As for the food well it was lack luster, and I kind of wish I had Frozen yogurt instead of the Char Noodle Special pad Thai. There was cut up iceberg lettuce and very wet sauce in my dish ... the sauce taste good, but this didn't taste like pad Thai at all. Had a good lunch here while in the area for a work meeting. The order taker was nice and our food came out fast. I had the noodles with beef and asked for extra spicy. It could have had a little more kick, but it was good overall. Portions were generous and plenty of seating despite it being lunch hour. Yes, the outdoor tables with umbrellas inside is an interesting touch. I would like to come back and try some additional items on the menu. Have come here a few times to have lunch. Not much variation in terms of the menu but you'll get your food quickly and plentiful. The seating in the restaurant is a little questionable. There are tables that fit the atmosphere but there is one table that is made of plastic and a table umbrella. It's very out of place. If you need a place nothing wrong with what is there but you'll be confused eating there. The service is quick with the food coming out quick whether you're eating in or taking out. The man taking orders isn't the most pleasant to talk to but I did witness him interacting with regulars pretty positivity. Great food and fast service! I enjoy their full menu, but the lunch specials are especially good. Their noodle offerings are the best in the area in quality and taste. I suggest exploring beyond the typical lo mein and trying some of their specialties. I love for lunch the Sa Char Mei Fun and Jar Jiang Mein. Many folks complain about the service of the man who usually works the register/phone and takes your order. He's a no-nonsense kind of guy, but nice enough. I've been a customer ever since I moved to CT from Southern California; at the time it was one of only two Chinese restaurants in the northeast area of Windsor. Char Koon appears to remain busy throughout the day (and late into the evening on weekends and weekdays), which is a testament to its "pretty-darn-good"-ness and consistency. We get take-out 99.9% of the time. We call in our order about 15-20 minutes beforehand, and by the time we arrive, Char Koon always manages to pack all items very securely, replete with complimentary fried wontons and a variety of sauces, neatly packed into a mini-plastic bag. Favorite appetizers include the BBQ spareribs (with bone-in) and Beef Satay. The Shrimp Lo Mein has lots of succulent shrimp and it's cooked with lots of garlic - just the way we like it. The Grilled Jumbo Shrimp with Rice Noodles (Vietnamese Style) is always, always excellent. As far as entrees, we tend to favor their "Southeast Asian Corner" menu items. Our entree favorites include the Eggplant Nyonya Style and Pan Fried Salmon with Thai Sauce -- though we rarely order both at the same time because the portion sizes are huge. The entrees are big enough to share between two-to-three people. We always ask for an extra helping of white rice because the rice that comes with each entree isn't enough for anyone who loves rice in every spoonful. An honorable mention goes to their venerable Chinese dish, Kung Pao Chicken (or Kung Pao Shrimp) -- except I ask for extra peanuts and ask them to hold all the veggies. It's not as authentic as other Kung Pao dishes that I've had, but it's close enough for Windsor! Worst food I've ever eaten and I've been all over the United States and in Europe. If it wasn't impossible to return it for a full refund, I would have! ( I had it delivered to my hotel ) I had a few bites then threw the whole thing in the trash. The shrimp was over cooked. Let's begin with the top three (3) things that paint my experience. One, I tried to order the Black Mushrooms with Bok Choy - out of bok choy. I asked them to create a black mushroom with beef dish, which was pretty good. Two, I arrived at the restaurant - and outside the place at the parking, someone had apparently gotten sick (should have been a fair warning). Three, based on my dish creation - the person on the other end of the phone said it would be $3 upcharge for a total of $76 out the door, ok. Well in reverse, they wanted to charge $79 after I arrived. Three buck isn't much - but don't change on me AFTER you've given me what you're supposedly charging my card. I'll skip over the unpleasant experience someone else must have had outside the establishment. Lastly and important. The food was AWFUL! The spinach and tofu soup was tasteless, the Hunan Chicken with Vegetables tasted tainted, the Spicy Wonton was a pack of mush with NO meat in it, the Eggrolls were mushy and sweet for some reason or other. The Crab Rangoon and other dishes were LESS than average, certainly not worth the trip. I wouldn't normally write about a bad experience - and certainly not in these times as this business is their livelihood. But ultimately, I as a customer am spending my families hard earned money and expect to get food that is at least edible and this wasn't. Ultimately if they're able to step up their game and cooking skills - or simply take things off the menu that they really don't know how to cook! I'm basing my review on my own experience and have not read others reviews, yet. Maybe next time, I'll do that before I decide to spend or better yet, waste my money at an establishment that I cannot in good conscience recommend - ever. read more

Hands down, best Chinese/Asian food in Hartford county. The flavor/spice is authentically good. They also will cater to your needs if you are vegetarian or vegan. I always get the Char Koon special minus the meat and they replaced it with tofu. Still looking for a place to top with a more upscale vibe but have yet to find it. I've been here numerous times and while it's not the best I've eaten, it's a far cry from the worst. The interior furnishings are that of an outdoor sea side cafe (literally plastic tables with umbrellas) and they sell various teas and sodas. I ordered the chicken and broccoli lunch special which came with pork fried rice and an egg roll. The sauce over the chicken and broccoli was a bit too oily for my liking, the rice was a bit on the dry side and the egg roll was a bit tasteless. Ok, After having seen the crappy rating I have to jump in here. Having lived in Windsor for 9 years, the wife & I tried all of the local Chinese places. While Char Koon isn't the best Chinese you'll ever have, it's not cruddy strip mall Chinese. The meats and vegetables used are of good quality and things are not cooked to death. Having just moved and tried a 5 star rated Chinese place near my new house it seems there are a lot of people out there rating places based on quantity rather than quality. I agree with the reviewer who said Char Koon is the best Chinese food you'll find in Windsor. read more

They give a good amount of food I like that they have a lot of vegetarian dishes and even if you like something that has meat they are more then happy to make it vegetarian for you. Now get over yourself and realize that if you order during Lunch you save a ton of money. All other times the portions and prices are on the very high end. I'm a biggish guy and I budget for a late night Char Koon craving about once a month. I'm okay with the rudeness at the counter at times, I only spend 30 seconds actually in the place. I do enjoy Char Koon, for sure, as it is one of the best Chinese Restaurants in town. When you stop in frequently, the family who owns/operates the place will take a liking to you and give you free egg rolls on occasion. They are super friendly and always tend to strike up a conversation. Overall, their food is good and the portions are certainly reasonable with prices to match. My husband and I can go in and walk out with left overs for $25. including tip. The boneless spareribs are sweet and tantalizing while the Crab Rangoon is just as sinfully delightful. The fried rice is average at best and does require salt to add a little flavor, but it isn't bad. They have several rather cheap combination dinners that come with the entree, rice, soup, and an egg roll. Definitely more calories than one should be eating in a single meal, but at least you can't complain that you didn't get enough to eat for the price you paid. The ambiance is casual - the patio furniture tables accompanied by umbrellas may make you chuckle a minute, but at least there is always a table available. What do I want out of my Chinese eatery? Decent fried rice, greasy noodles, and some tasty deep fried chicken wings. This place seems to hit the trifecta so I'm going to give it a good mark. Fried rice in particular has some nice and voluptuous shrimp but it could have more soy sauce or salt. It's lacking that sodium kick I'm yearning for but it has all the right ingredients. Amazing eggplant in garlic sauce. We came to Connecticut on vacation from South Carolina and found the most delicious place to have dinner.

Good take out Chinese food. Vegetable lo mein was our favorite. Mu shu pork was tasty (pork a bit soggy). The honey glazed chicken was just sweet and chicken a bit soggy. Next time will order: The Singaporean Shrimp noodle dish looks good, chicken satay or pad Thai. read more

I used to work in Windsor, and I went there every week. Almost every time I ordered Jar Jiang Mein. It's genuine spicy, not fake spicy flavor that some Chinese restaurants give. Real Jar Jian Mein from Korean restaurants won't taste like here, but still their version is tasty. Other dishes I've tried are Sar char mei fun, chicken spinach noodle soup. They are ok, very mild. Their portion is huge compared to their price. I miss there a lot :) read more
