Hunan spicy chicken with mixed vegetables and fried rice
    Don P.

Very nicely done Wah's, spice level was an 8, chicken was tender, mixed vegetables were cooked beautifully; the dish nicely sauced and quite tasty. The fried rice had a lot going on, way better than most Chinese American restos. Over all this was a very good experience, Wah's is well above average.

Here's what Wah's Garden isn't. 1) It isn't large and it isn't a sit-down restaurant. It has just two 4-person booths and three 2-person booths, so it's primarily for take-out. 2) It isn't fashionable-you'll see cracked floor tiles and peeling panelling. 3) It isn't found in a glamorous location -it's more or less in a strip mall between a gym and an Ocean State Job Lot. 4) It isn't organized. Take out orders from the phone get a "number". Take out orders from walk-ins get no number, so when there are a dozen take-out customers millng around the counter like there was tonight, it gets pretty confusing for everyone, including the counter gal. But here's what Wah's Garden is. It's been around forever. It's a very dependable and inexpensive place with a huge menu where you can pick up some very good Chinese food. I've stopped here quite a bit, and tonight we paid $20 for a quart of chicken with broccoli ($8.95), six steamed pork dumplings ($4.95), a pint of won ton soup ($2.15) and a pint of hot and sour soup ($2.75). Plenty of food for the two of us. For $20. The H&S Soup was absolutely jam packed with tofu strips, water chestnut cubes, slivers of bamboo shoots, and egg ribbons in a sturdy broth. No meat, but it wasn't necessary -the soup was excellent and quite a good value for just $2.75. The dumplings were equally good- big and meaty and not too doughy. The chicken and broccoli was great- plenty of chicken and tender broccoli in a nice brown sauce. For take-out, they sure get the job done.

Wah's Ga it is, homie! Let the lovin from the... wok begin!

My friend has celiac and I have been gluten free for years cause of personal reasons and found great food here. My favorites were the pork bun so tender and delicious and the chicken corn dumpling. The dumpling was full of great flavors. We tried their fried onion rings and didn't leave one! We had their eggplant which I enjoyed tremendously. It has a crunchy outside with creamy inside which I loved. We had the pork dumplings which we thoroughly enjoyed. I have to go back and get more chicken and pork buns my number one favorite and I really want to try their gluten free lo mein. So we made the trek to find this shop. The plaza this place is in was doing some construction, so I had to go by the flag outside to find them. Inside is a little basic but clean. The cashier was very nice and helpful. Explained the coloring system and the order. Got my food to go, picked up some sweets at the local sweets shop next door. Took pics and tried some bites. The dumplings were made fresh, perfectly thin and cooked well. Ample amounts of filling and sweet and spicy dipping sauces. They offer very fancy dumplings like foie gras or truffles with morelles. I opted for chicken and corn along with some beef bao. Everything was pretty tasty and pretty reasonably priced. For the two orders of dumplings and the bao came out to 24 bucks. Pretty affordable and pretty good bites. It's not a pretty location, but they do good dumplings to go. Worth a try if your off the beaten path and have a hankerin for done good dumplings.

The space is absolutely beautiful: modern, bright, and spotless. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out piping hot. They bring each dish out as it's ready instead of all at once, so keep that in mind if you like everything served together. Personally, I didn't mind because it just meant my soup was perfect when it arrived, and my son's appetizer followed shortly after. I didn't check out the bathrooms this time, but judging by the rest of the restaurant, I'm sure they're just as immaculate. Black Bamboo is the only Chinese food I'll eat, period. If you know me, you know I'm picky, and this place never disappoints. Every bite tastes fresh, the service is friendly, and the vibe is always calm and inviting. Over the years I have had everything on the menu, and I've never had a bad meal. My personal favorites: the egg rolls, scallion pancakes, hot and sour soup and their fried rice, which I honestly think is the best in the world, period. My son is all about their beef teriyaki and it's his go-to every single time. This is exactly the kind of place where you can try something new and know it's going to be good. I recently ordered the chop suey and egg foo young for the first time ever, and both were fantastic. If you've been curious to branch out, this is where you want to do it; you can't go wrong. Also, they have real duck sauce for a small upcharge. Not just stuff in the packet (yuck). So if you're craving Chinese food in West Hartford, go to Black Bamboo. You'll taste the quality, feel the difference, and probably end up like me... a loyal regular who can't eat Chinese anywhere else.

They recently opened a new location on Farmington Ave in West Hartford, but this spot is east of the old location. The new digs are nice inside. The dining room is not huge, but it's roomier than the old dining room. You still order at the counter even if you're dining in. Over the years, most of my food orders probably fall within the 4.25 Star to 4.5 Star range for a takeout type Chinese restaurant. Occasionally, they'll dip a bit lower or soar a bit higher. My General Tso's Chicken Combo meal with broccoli, pork fried rice and a fried shrimp egg roll was trending towards 4.5 Stars, but fell a bit short so I'm going to round down to 4 Stars since I can't give half Star ratings. The chicken was good quality and well cooked. The sauce was a bit sweet and sour-leaning on the General Tso's Spectrum. The shrimp egg roll was very good. It had two medium size shrimp rather than a bunch of mini shrimp. Pro Tip - I like the pork egg roll at a lot of places, but Shrimp is definitely the way to go at Black Bamboo. The pork fried rice was tan, which I mention because I always prefer places with the tan rice to places with the yellow rice. I've ordered a range of things at Black Bamboo over the years. Their sauces are not always like the sauces at other places. And what I really like about Black Bamboo is each Black Bamboo sauce tastes different than its other sauces. At other takeout places, a few different named sauces are just vaguely brown, sweet and spicy. Black Bamboo is one of the better takeout Chinese options in Hartford County. 4.4 Stars

Sidewalks were torn up but the place is hard to find with lack of signage. We were able to get seated right away, and looked through their digital menu. We got a smattering of dishes, wontons and dumplings, a sandwich and a ramen. Food came out in a reasonable wait time. We took pics and dug in. The 7 flavor dumpling was the star of the show. Light and thin dumpling wrapper, savory sweet sauce, plenty of filling. The pork dumplings were good, but the wrapper was thicker and denser. The twice cooked pork sandwich was pretty tasty, the pork needed to be more present compared to the veggies, but appreciated the crisp of the bread. The ramen had a good amount of braised beef and noodles. The broth needed a little doctoring to coax out some of the more savory notes. Broth needed more aggressive seasoning though. The price was not too bad for the area. It's kind of like dim sum, where you get a small plate for the price but it's all shareable and the flavors are good. It's not very well lit, gave the place a very dark air about it. But as a restaurant, it's pretty good. There's a lot of great places in that area, and this one's a good option if you're looking for small plates.

Outside is very much a busy shopping plaza in not the best part of town. Inside is a completely different story. Very clean and spacious, lots of booths and tables. Decorated well and a lot to see. The staff were friendly but there was a slight language barrier. We fumbled through the menu and found some bites to try. Food came out relatively quick, and that was a bit to manage because there were a lot of plates brought rather quickly. We got pics and dug in. The bites were flavored well. Nothing felt too greasy or under seasoned. The white pepper chicken was very crispy. But not a lot of chicken on each bite. The sweet and sour soup was both sweet and sour, but balanced enough that you could keep on eating it. The dumplings were fresh noodles and the filling was spiced well. The only flop was the spare ribs. Really tasty sauce, but very little meat on the bone. Had to suck on the bones to scrape enough meat off to make it a proper appetizer. It tasted good, just was not easy to eat. Price for the area was high for the neighborhood. It's got the quality and the flavor to command that price easily, but it doesn't match the stores. It's really good, but know that you're getting the real deal sichuan experience. Expect some heat, some saucy fingers, and some bones, and you'll get some really good bites

My only less than enthusiastic comment concerns the fried wontons. They were room temperature, but they were flavorful. I ordered shrimp with the Tom Yum soup. How cool is it that shrimp is even an option? And it was perfectly tender. The soup had that classic sweet, sour and hot flavor. The Sala Noodles were very good. Wide noodles. Thin pieces of chicken. Carved grilled calamari. Snow peas. Sprouts. I could taste terrific char grill flavor, and that's a rare thing in this type of dish. The noodles and chicken had good flavor. Sapporo Premium Beer is Japan's oldest beer brand, founded in Hokkaido in 1876 by brewer Seibei Nakagawa. Known for a crisp, refined taste with a clean, dry finish, it is a pilsner-style lager (roughly 4.7-5.2% ABV) frequently packaged in iconic silver cans. It pairs well with Japanese food and is known for its high-quality ingredients and brewing standards. It was founded in 1876 during Japan's Meiji-era modernization in Hokkaido, it is the nation's first and oldest beer. The world headquarters of Sapporo Breweries is in Ebisu, Shibuya, Tokyo, and it also operates a renowned museum in Sapporo. As for taste, it's a golden-colored, light-to-medium-bodied lager with mild bitterness, a subtle sweet malt aroma, and a sharp finish.. While technically a Japanese beer, many cans sold in the U.S. are brewed in places like Escondido, California, and Richmond, Virginia, Key products include Sapporo Premium Lager, Sapporo Black, and Yebisu. This is THE beer to have with this cuisine (Chengdu or Szechuan). This is good! It's ice cold too! They come with soy sauce. The noodles are made from mong beans. Mung beans (Vigna radiata) are small, green legumes native to India, widely cultivated in Asia, and known as green gram or moong bean. They are a highly nutritious, versatile ingredient, rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, used in both savory dishes (soups, curries, noodles) and sweet desserts, often sprouted for increased nutritional value. Mung beans are easy to cook, require little to no presoaking, and offer health benefits like antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. I am also having the Seafood Hot and Sour Soup (small size). This seafood soup is good! Not too spicy! It's similar to the standard Chinese hot and sour soup in taste. For my entree, i'm having the Sliced Chicken with Crunchy Rice. This is made with chicken slices, crunchy rice, black fungus, ginger, scallions, garlic, pickled chili peppers, lettuce and pea sprouts. They fold the crispy rice and put it on top. This is piping hot! Spicy too! For dessert, we are having a Chocolate Truffle (made with Zabione cream center surrounded by chocolate gelato and caramelized hazelnuts topped with cocoa powder), Cappuccino Truffle (made with cappuccino gelato with a heart of espresso covered with coffee flavored merinique sprinkles) and Capps Pistachio (custard gelato swirled with chocolate and pistachio gelato ago topped with praline pistachios). Zabaione (or zabaglione) is a classic Italian dessert made from whipped egg yolks, sugar, and sweet wine (traditionally Marsala) cooked gently over a double boiler until light, foamy, and custard-like. It can be served warm as a sauce over fruit or cookies, or chilled as a standalone dessert, often garnished with berries or biscotti. The name comes from the Venetian word for "whipped," reflecting its airy texture. These are absolutely great!
