I almost didn't write a review for this place... until I was reminded the next day from all my explosive diarrhea rupturing from my body to do so. Thanks, Char-Pit for blowing up my toilet! This place was absolutely awful. The only reason I actually ate my food was because I was desperate, malnourished, and there were hardly any other options nearby. I wouldn't have subjected my body to this food otherwise. Keep this in mind while you read, I have only written one review on yelp in my life. I am only doing so now because I feel a moral obligation to prevent some other poor soul from eating here. Also, I hope to possibly open the eyes of whoever is operating this awful restaurant. I honestly don't know how this business has not been shut down yet from health code violations at this point. I watched them prepare food and cross contaminate with their bare hands as they moved my fries and burger to the plate along with everything else. The smell walking up is classic hamburger stand. The outside seating is relaxed. The food was exactly as expected. The cashier was very friendly & pleasant & helpful. The impression walking inside to order... they are in desperate need of a pressure washer, the interior cleaning is pretty subpar, the cooking and food handling surfaces were clean. The walls ceiling, menu boards, floors, thick with grease and old dust. It has not been deep cleaned in years. If it has, they have some serious ventilation issues. When to Char-Pit for lunch today and was looking for a good burger or BBQ ribs. They had burgers there and I didn't get the ribs. I will say they were very busy today for lunch and I know they usually are busy. We ordered some burgers. I ordered the sour cream beacon burger and I wasn't disappointed. Granted it wasn't the best burger I have ever had but it hit the spot. I would come back again. So as we were waiting for our order we grabbed the only seats the were available inside Char-Pit and it was hot in there. We were waiting on people on the outside patio. Once some people left and there were open seat at the out door patio we grabbed them quickly. It was a busy day and lots of customers. Once we got a seat outside it was nice and much cooler outside than inside Char-Pit. That kitchen made it really hot inside. We waited 15-25 minutes for our food. A bit long for the waiting time for food but we managed. If I could give them but the food was good. The fries were good and so where the burgers. There are some parking spaces there but you will have to fight for one during the busy peak hours. They don't have a lot of parking spaces. You better finding one a little ways out and walking here. He actually told the guy the handled our money to put on gloves when he decided to prep food later on. When our order was ready, the burgers were overcooked! We came to Char-Pit around 3pm on the weekend and the cashier immediately told us that there would be a 40-minute wait for food. We had the time so the wait was fine but many customers zipped right back out after hearing the wait time. After ordering, I took a seat and saw that the tables were covered in crumbs and were sticky, there were fries all over the floor by the kitchen, and in the area where the ketchup was, there was ketchup all over the counter top. I thought to myself that they must be pretty understaffed for there to be a 40 minute wait for food and for the restaurant to be unclean. We ended up getting our food in under 20 minutes (yay!). I really enjoyed my mushroom burger which was juicy as well as the side order of onion rings. They were extra crunchy and good but I almost thought that the onion got lost because the rings were fried so much. I also tried the ribs which were tender and flavorful. Service was lacking. There's indoor and outdoor seating. As it was pretty warm during my visit, I noticed that most people came in for sweets - chocolate dipped ice cream cones and milkshakes. read more

This place is probably a health inspectors dream! I saw two separate employees using their bare hands to sweep fries and place food onto customer's plates before serving them. One of the cooks sneezed but didn't bother to wash his hands, then continued working. After noticing the general uncleanliness of this place, I watched in mild disgust as my burger was prepared by multiple dirty hands. The food was good. No complaints there. Why did I eat it despite the gross kitchen? Well, I had about ten bucks riding on this burger/fries combo and wasn't about to let it go to waste. Your only "Char" option is the half or full rack of ribs. I ordered the half and those ribs were so dry I'm actually disappointed in myself because I didn't complain. My wife ordered the fish and chips which seemed like frozen cod fingers, exactly 3 of them. Also I get the whole bbq joint "look" but the place is actually filthy, there wet napkins and food outside and under the tables, and the food pick up window is dirty.. you're charging good money, give good service! This place would get five stars for the food, but the service brings it all the way down to two, close to a one star. I was appalled at how we were treated as customers. They seemed more annoyed that we were there than giving them business. The whole crew needs a lesson on customer service - and that they would not exist if it weren't for the customers. We waited 45 minutes for a milkshake, and when we went to ask for it they admitted they forgot about it. Later when it was ready we went and asked again, the only response was "it's been ready for a while" and just pointed to it. When we were ordering our burgers, the gentleman taking orders seemed very annoyed that we were even trying to place orders. We were with a group of kids, and each would go up to order and when he would ask if they wanted everything on the burger, they would ask what all comes on it. He would then exasperatedly look at the menu on the ceiling and recite what's on the burger. They're kids- a little patience and understanding goes a long way. Boy O Boy did we hit the food lotto today! Check out the char-pit, put it on your must visit list for North lake Tahoe. Call in sick. Take PTO. Take a loan out on the house. The place looks like it's been here forever and it seems a little worn at the edges. And it has that down home feel that I'm drawn to. And with a great burger and beer, what could be better? After 19 days in Tahoe, I asked the Irishman what he was thinking for dinner as his last meal. He wanted a good old-fashioned big old American burger, so we headed here. He saw that I was ordering my usual, the gyro, so he decided to try that instead once I explained to him that it was the Greek version of the doner kebab that he was so used to when we lived in London. Then I suggested we get an order of the onion rings, something that he seemed perplexed by. "Yanks will fry anything," he scoffed. I reminded him that his neighbors in Scotland were the ones frying up Twinkies and Mars candy bars. And for dessert, we went with giant soft ice cream cones. Final results: GOOOOOOOOOAL! He loved the gyro. I tried not to blink in horror when he poured "tomato sauce" (ketchup) over it. He loooooooved the onion rings, once I showed him how to squeeze the giant rings in the middle and bite off half at a time (he was pulling the fried bits off and swallowing the inside onion ring whole). And a big thumbs up for the soft ice cream. It was a bit pricy - $25 + tip for everything, but delicious. read more

The onion rings were good and so were the fries, definitely the best part of the meal. Big portions but not cheap (of course nothing in Tahoe is). The iced tea was bad, try something else. Customer service not too good either. They seemed more into their conversation than actually waiting on anyone. No worries, I'm on vacation and not in a rush. May try again but probably not. The food was fine but the customer service was lacking. The ordering process went smoothly enough. The parking lot has A total of 5 spaces shared by two businesses and they were all full. There was no parking next door nor across the street, so we parked by the side of the building while waiting for our to go order. The owner came out and told us to park in a parking space while waiting for our food from his restaurant even though there were obviously no spaces open at all. When someone left we took theirs. We have been to 50 take out restaurants in the past month during Covid 19 and all of them run the food out to the car since everything is closed. This is the first restaurant that left our food on the counter and called out our name until we heard it in the car, in the parking lot, with the radio on. Who knows how long it was there. Still, the only reason for the review was we were given no napkins or plastic utinsles even for my GFs ribs order and it was all a take out order. When I asked for them every employee stated at me like I was robbing the place. It was bizarre. Then the owner shouted that there was a fork inside the ribs box. There wasn't. I eventually got a fork and some napkins, but then had to go back again and ask for a plastic knife. 4 for the food but 2 for service. Overall a 3. Would not repeat. read more

Have to say that I loved this place right when I walked in the door; it's a classic hole-in-the-wall joint run by people just like you and me. I haven't even gotten my food yet, but by the smell alone I'm expecting a great burger and rings. Plus they have paper towels instead of napkins, so I hope I won't be disapointed. The price is reasonabe as well; some might think it's a bit high, but they don't expect tips other than what you want to put in the jar on the counter. Best meal I've had in North Tahoe by far. Upon walking into the door we were greeted with a confrontation to what looked like a dispute between a former employee and a current employee to where the employee was telling this individual to take their order and to get the F*** out. The individual then proceeded to leave the establishment. My wife and I ordered a regular 1/4 lb burger and fish and chips with combos ($23) I just have the worst luck when it comes to getting fountain drinks, we got two sodas and flat as could be. After about 25-30~ minutes are order was ready and I noticed immediately that every employee in the kitchen area was not wearing any gloves. Food is hot so let's just hope everything is killed off. Employee did not offer any condiments nor napkins and I had to ask, which it is what it is. Fries were nothing spectacular as they were very plain fries with zero seasoning, not even salt. The burger itself was a normal 1/4 lbs flat top cooked burger with not much for flavor, but did come with a toasted bun and all the veggies (lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles). The fish and chips were crispy and the fish was fine and was accompanied with some tarter sauce; not special and got the job done.
