French onion soup was delicious. Sangria was really good too! My boyfriend got the seafood platter with linguini which was cooked to perfection. I got the filet mignon medium rare and it came well done, which killed the whole point of the steak. The vegetables on the plate were good and the mashed potatoes needed a bit of salt. The service was horrible although the waitress was very apologetic about it. She was nice but could not handle everything going on in the restaurant. I think they need more wait staff. They were kind of busy but it took a really long time to get everything we ordered. Horrific service -- bizarrely rude and unattentive. Not sure why, as my party was perfectly polite and normal. I was a waitress for 3 years so I have a lot of empathy for food service workers -- but this was just dismal to the point of baffling. Less-than-mediocre food. Found this restaurant on the way back home from Woodbury commons. My daughter an I spent the day shopping and rather than sitting in traffic on the thruway we took old 17 south back to Jersey. We notice a full parking lot and figured it was worth stopping. Glad we did. The chicken pot pie was delicious, the Rubin was very good and the coconut shrimp and onion ring were awesome. Hated it! The microwave was used a lot. Some of the food came out cold, such as the mashed potatoes and mozzarella sticks, which is weird. The food was okay. The waitress seemed nice until we asked about homemade desserts and she made it a point to mention that the "menu clearly says homemade for one of the desserts" it's not what she said, but how... Then when we asked about the bill and how we'd like separate checks. The waitress proceeded to say "next time let me know a head of time..:" but there won't be a next time! Really, she could've asked, in the beginning when introducing herself, if we'd want separate checks or not... Especially, when there's more than 4 people. read more

GOOD EATS ON THE CHEAP! was in the area near Tuxedo train station and decided to grab lunch here on Tuesday afternoon. Read reviews but wanted to give it a shot since parking lot looked pretty full - a good sign. I was so pleasantly surprised to be seated in a table for four even though I was a single. I had work to do and needed to spread out and my waitress was so gracious to comply. The place was a bit dark and there was some banging ( construction?) nearby but sporadic. All this would have in previous dining experiences run for the hills but the great customer service from my server Victoria kept me there. When asked for lunch recommendation she suggested the Shepard's Pie.unbeknownst to her this is a personal fave and I am highly critical when it is sub par. On the contrary here-- it was absolutely delicious. Tasty and the mashed potatoes was velvety and wonderful! Stopped here with a few friends after a hike up near Warwick. The wait stuff was very nice but the food was nasty. Our meals took an hour to come out and all we ordered were burgers and sandwiches. Appetizers came out after we got our dinner and we had to ask the waiter for bread. I ordered a Reuben sandwich and the corned beef was like shoe rubber with nasty fake plastic cheese on top. Im giving this review based on the bar/bar food part of this bar/restaurant. A great buyback policy everytime i've been, better pizza than the legendary kinchley's (in my opinion by far!), and a nice quiet atmoshpere. a nice mini fireplace type thing in winter makes it that much cozier too. And not to be missed is one of my all time fave bartenders, the lovely Katie. put all this together, and you've got a can't miss joint in Sloatsburg of all places. I eat here often enough because I live nearby. It is pretty good especially the steak and also for chicken pot pie & curry chicken. Whatever you do don't order the fish. For some reason they think salmon is supposed to be overcooked and dry. They do a good job on the burgers and pizza as well. The bar is a lot of fun. The bartender is really nice, he and his wife own the place. She is also really nice. The waitstaff are ok one of the waitresses did admonish me once for actually finishing my dinner "I would never have been able to eat all that" is what she said. I think she just wasn't thinking....I of course could've cared less and ordered their dessert which by the way was fantastic. I was amazed to see her bounce from hostess to waitperson to cashier. We ordered all over the widely divergent menu, yet everyone was satisfied. You need to request their better quality wine (now Kendal Jackson) - though that's noted on the drink menu's bottom in small print. Started seeking out new restaurants nearby, and finally stopped here. Now we're sorry we delayed trying it for so long ! Placed in a 150 year old inn, Characters has an upscale interior, yet you feel comfortable in casual clothes. Fireplace in winter, overhead fans in summer. Pictures of Irish movie characters on the walls give it its name. There are also interesting local pictures from years past, along with a couple of highly placed flat screen TVs (muted) so Dads won't get bored. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The food, which seems to be Irish American, with some Italian thrown in (pizza), was delicious. I had Irish fish and chips, but plan to try the Irish curry chicken the next time we go... which will be soon. There are not many nice places around here, and we are very happy to find someplace that we would not hesitate to take family and visitors, knowing they would leave impressed. read more

When they first opened we went there for dinner. It was not a good experience so we did not go back.. But many people told us how good the food was so we tried it two other times with no issues but we did not want to eat there when other options were available. Well I met my husband there tonight. I got there at 8PM. We stood at the hostess desk for several minutes while the staff visited with each other and ignored us. Then we proceeded into the dining room which was mostly empty except for one large party whose young children were running around and screaming. We were told that this party were regulars. We should have left, but took a table as far from them as we could. It did not matter. The children were mostly unsupervised except when someone got up to give them more coins for the video games in the main dining room. To be fair the food wag good. Our waitress tax attentive. But I could no get out if there fast enough. Never go out to a restaurant with games I the dining room, not when the entrees are $20 plus each. At those prices you deserve a pleasant atmosphere.
