I stated what I needed 3 times, with certain condiments left off of the beef sandwich, due to allergies, and they still messed up and put it on the order. My usual order $8.00: Cheese steak delight special with a root beer. No sweet, add giardinier and extra cheese...let the cheesy spicey goodness drip onto your yummy fries and oh man. A meal you'll never forget! They have chardogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches, REAL HOME MADE soup daily (try the clam if they have it!) and they have shakes and yummy Iced Tea daily too. A true northside treat to be able to order at the counter and sit with your number - the staff brings your food to your table. I have never tipped.(are you supposed to?) They don't have amazing deals in their entrees and combos, but if you have to eat and want something to fill in the stomach, then you've got it! I hate to write this I really do. Went through the drive through, ordered my food and was told to pull to the side, after 20 minutes of waiting I decided to go inside to find out, that order machine was broken. The guy at the front decided to take my receipt barehanded, scratched his nose, touched the counter several times and decided to grab every piece of my sandwich with his barehands. I told him sir I'm not eating that you should wear gloves. He gives me attitude and says he washes his hands every five minutes even though in the 12 minutes that I was there I did not see him do so. Long story short after being asked several times by me and by his coworker (who was working the register) still decided not to wear gloves. Nice local spot to catch a meal, whether your in the mood for some burgers or some chicken. They have a nice menu selection of food and also have some tasty shakes available to satisfy your sweet tooth. Came here to catch an afterschool meal with my little one. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and she got the chicken tender meal with fries, along with a strawberry shake. Everything was really good for being fast food. The burgers were nicely grilled and my daughter enjoyed her tenders. The milkshake was nice and creamy! Inside there are plenty of tables and seats available. Whatever you do, DO NOT get the gyro sandwich. $13 for the meal with fries. Its really small and it's not good. It comes wrapped in a cone shape. You know they do that when they skimp on the meat. The meat is thinly sliced, flavorless, and seems like it's steamed. There are no crunchy parts at all. The tzatziki sauce is flavorless yet overpacked with thinly sliced long limp onions, doesn't have any cucumber or salt. The pita was fine. They put tons of fresh parsley on it, seemingly to make up for lack of everything else. Since when do you put parsley on a gyro sandwich? In a city where we have some great gyros, this doesn't qualify as a gyro sandwich. I was starving and I threw out half of it. The side of fries was kid sized too. The staff is nice. The best things to order: -Chicken Kabob Sandwich (or platter, plus a side of tzatziki if you miss it) -Patty melt -Chicken Delight (fried chicken sandwich.) -The fries, though unremarkable, are everything I want in a fry in this context. Charcoal Delights, you saved the day once again. It was New Years Eve, 8:30, and I was craving gyros. Yes, GYROS. You can find this all over the city at any hole-in-the-wall joint, Greek diner, or Greektown. But I didn't want to drive to Greektown, so Charcoal Delights it is. I ordered the gyros sandwich special, which includes fries and pop. I also ordered extra tzatziki sauce on the side (because that's how I roll). Drive-thru is an added bonus. I arrived there 15 minutes before closing, but the cashier was very friendly, even wishing me a Happy New Year. +1 for customer service. The fries were right out of the fryer, crispy, salty, and hot. Ohhhh yeahhh I took the rest home and dug in. The gyros was THICK. Loaded with meat, and topped with onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki. Then I dipped the fries in the extra tzatziki. Mmm... The tzatziki was delicious, with finely shredded cucumbers, herbs, and garlic. Addictive. The sauce was the star of the show here. This place is an old favorite of mine, and I'll be back for tzatziki and fries! Edit 3/27: I love their cheeseburgers and pizza puffs (just order them well done). This is my secret lunch spot when classes are in session at Northeastern. Okay, not so secret, since they've been here for 20 years. But I never see anyone from school there, and that's good enough for me. It's basically a fast food joint, but with table service. You go to the counter, place your order and pay, and they hand you a tray with a number on it. Sit your ass down, 'cause they'll bring your food to you. No waiting at the counter? Score! The menu is huge-ass. As your ass will be, if you eat here too often. Breakfast, dog and burgers, gyros and other sandwiches, dinners (broasted chicken!) -- standard diner fare, but lots of it. Not to mention cheesecake, baklava, and frozen custard. Most of the sandwiches come in a "special" version, with fries and a drink for 6 or 7 bucks. A couple of things set this place apart. First, it's clean. I realize that should be a given, but it too rarely is. Second, customer service. Everyone seems to like working here. That says something about management. Third -- yeah, I said a couple, sue me -- third, the food always come out hot. Even the gyros, which are never hot, are hot here. Served on a freshly toasted pita. Yeah, baby. read more

What? I haven't reviewed Charcoal Delights yet? Two words for my oversight: Un Acceptable! I have moved closer to this restaurant, and good thing, too, because it's a standby for those "too tired/busy/lazy to cook" evenings. I would describe CD as offering high quality fast food. They have the usual burger and dog offerings, but add quintessential Greek-American dishes, such as gyros. My favorite parts of the gyros here are the crispy, grilled pita bread and the tzatziki sauce, mentioned in many reviews here. That sauce is very, very good, let me tell you; it sets CD apart from the rest. The key word here is Variety. With offerings ranging from juicy fried chicken to salads, Polish sausage to baked potatoes, you can find most any combination of food to create a meal that satisfies your cravings. But for me, the star is the most AWESOME onion rings I have found, ever. They are real rings of onion, first of all, not chopped and reformed (what is that, anyway?). Second, they are encased in the crispiest batter imaginable. I don't know who their supplier is, but god bless them. One more thing I love about Charcoal Delights is the owner. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you what could be the first greasy spoon to be complimented without such a clause juxtaposed. The extensive menu includes the greasy fare of burgers, fries, hot dogs and gyros, but they also have freshly broasted and fried chicken, ribs and kabobs for those who'd like something other than the standard favorites. The prices are more than reasonable and the more popular items have a fry and drink combination that puts a sizable meal for one around $6. The gyro I ordered was probably the best gyro I've had in recent memory. The meat was tender and extremely well seasoned. I am extremely picky about the rareness of my meat, and although I'd never eat red gyro meat, it was perfect for my undercooked taste. Bonus for the tazaki sauce being thick enough to be viscous even in a warm sandwich. My boyfriend ordered the broasted chicken sandwich (subbing tazaki for the mayo) which had freshly chopped chunks of seasoned broasted chicken in lieu of the standard breast slapped on a griddle. As I mentioned, many greasy spoons have great food. While this may be better than most, the service and the overall appearance put the experience above expectations. The counter help was extremely friendly, and we were given a number and allowed to sit and wait with our drinks until our food was delivered to our table. The general appearance of the interior, although nothing extravagant, is impressive for what you would expect. Every visit to the Pit takes me back to my carefree college days when I was thin, cocky and totally fly with my Flock of Seagulls hair style. The joint has been totally remodeled and actually looks like a respectable eatery now. The food is just like I remember it. It's a perfect example of comfort food. Delicious, filling and artery clogging. If you are looking for a healthy meal, the pit is probably not your cup of tea. During college, I pretty much lived at this place. Whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, you would find me at the Pit pretending to study. I was usually day dreaming about baseball, music or the hot girl who sat in front of me in my history class. Let's face it. Academia was not my cup of tea. I majored in staying academically eligible to play baseball. Here's the delicious bottom line: Whether you're looking for a Burger the size of a truck, feta cheese omelet, or a grilled cheese sandwich, head on down to the Pit for some good old fashioned, cardiac arrest causing comfort food.
