Chicago Hot Dog, Combination Italian Sandwich
    Mary M.

love this fast service hot dog / hamburger provider. The staff slinging dogs behind the counter are SO nice and amiable. No frills, in the best way possible: the dog speaks for itself. Best Chicago dog I've had in a while. Did not skimp on the celery salt, which I believe makes the dog. Brought some out of town friends and they loved it too. Was a very great spot to show out-of-towners what a proper Chicago dog is. Ravenswood location has my

I ordered the 2 hot dog special, that comes with fries and a drink. Everyone was pleasant and they bring you your food. They have 2 type of dogs, Classic Chicago style and "dragged through the garden. Dragged through the garden adds green peppers and lettuce to a Chicago style hot dog. I sat in the oversized comfy booths and waited. I love that the dogs are natural casing, but they can be put together with a little more love. It just falls apart, even with some assembly required. The fries come in a paper bag which is great when you're have to go and have "snack" fries on the ride home.

Eh. Fourth of July and I wanted a hot dog, but I don't have a grill and didn't want to go to the trouble to cook them just for me. Since other restaurants were closed Byron's was the logical choice (it's also about two blocks away, so that made it attractive too). I got the Dogzilla combo, which was a humongous hot dog that I mostly ate (it's like a quarter pound hotdog, so large is an understatement). It comes on an Italian sub roll rather than a hot dog bun because there's not really a bun that could stand up to it. It was ok, but I'd not get one again. The Italian beef ordered for my dining partner was not good. This is a dude who can inhale an Italian beef, but half the sandwich (at least) was thrown in the trash. The meat wasn't as good as a lot of other Italian beef places, and the texture was a bit different. Overall the flavor of others' Italian beef is significantly better, and the fact that Byron's gives you about two pounds of meat doesn't make up for it's subpar beef. This is an counter service place. They have a small dining room, and offer carry out (of course) as well as delivery. They also have a pretty large parking lot, particularly since most of the other businesses along Lawrence from the between the lake and Western don't. I've lived down the street from this place for over a dozen years and been here perhaps once before. Perhaps now I remember why, and I probably won't return.

Having passed by Byron's more times than I can count, it was time to make this our quick lunch stop while enjoying the area's annual freecycle event. While I found their combo meals to be more pricy than I assumed, I was in the mood for a fountain soda, so I did the hotdog combo. The dog was okay. The shoestring fries and soda were great. I was shocked at how fast our order arrived. Though the meal and service were good, the place is very dirty, hence my three stars. None of the empty tables had been wiped, and the vent above our table was filthy. The area around the soda fountain was also very unclean.

Me, my 13 yr old, and my father in law went on a hot dog eating expedition one day, and we loved Byron's the most of all the places we went. The quality of the pickle and the peppers really put it on top. Come here if you want a great Chicago dog

Cute-as-a-button decor stepping you back into a diner diner-style era where burger dates and milkshakes were the highest priority. During lunch, nearby patrons are running in and out of here to pick up a greasy bag of fries and most likely an Italian beef. Although the polish is also a hot commodity! While the team is assembling your Italian Beef you feel like a kid watching as they hold the whole sandwich with a pair of tongs and dip it in au jus saturating the beef and French bread. There are sticker vending machines and Coca Cola branded refrigerators to make you feel extra nostalgic. The service reminds me of stereotypical Chicago dudes working with their family members serving up glizzys. They are straightforward, a few one-liners, and they look like they like to have fun with the boys after work. The fries are thinner cut, a crispy crunch, and are topped with wonderful finely grated salt that decorates your fingers after. The Italian beef was a bit bland but was dipped to perfection with the perfect ratio of bread to ju. The quantity of Italian beef inside was generous like an Italian father at his daughter's wedding.

My family & I ate here, I'll say it was too expensive for the amount/type of food we received. The Philly cheesesteak sandwich was tiny.

I can see this place getting really busy, very popular. Ordered the Chicago dog, first time trying. It was amazing! Loved all the toppings. If you're really hungry order two. I asked for extra sport peppers... and they never made it into the bag. The peppers that did survive then launched itself onto the ground after my first bite, never to be seen again. A lone pepper remained. A true Chicago casualty. I ordered ahead for pickup at 12:15, and while it was ready on time, I think it had been sitting for a bit because everything was cold by the time I got back. The fries had good flavor but had sadly crossed over into soggy territory. The sauces were tasty (and generously portioned), but paying $1 each bruised my sauce-loving heart just a little. One thing that genuinely surprised me was the seating. The inside is tiny, and almost all of the seating is outdoors. It had me wondering... what exactly happens here in a Chicago January? Do we all just huddle around our hot dogs for warmth? Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, it just didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe I caught them on an off day, because I can definitely see the potential.

It has that classic late night comfort food vibe and feels like one of those staple spots you have to try at least once. First night I ordered a polish hot dog with everything on it and a fish sandwich w/ extra grilled onions. Super cool that your order comes with fries and I added a cheese cup both times. In my opinion the fries were mid the first go around, but second time they were better. Definitely tasted better dipped in cheese. They were kinda airy in texture, if that makes sense. Polish hot dog was around a 6.5-7/10 for me. It did taste better warmed up the next day. What I was most obsessed with was the double cheeseburger and fish sandwich! both were easily a 10/10. Super good prices and worth the money. Also, the chile peppers were sooo bomb and hotter than I expected ! I wanted to eat them all, but they were packing some serious heat! The lemon Italian ice is where it's at, make sure to order one! You can also mix it with strawberry, but both times people recommended the lemon and now I see why. The line gets super active and busy past 10-11pm, but during the daytime it's way less crowded. Even when it gets packed the line moves pretty quick. It was almost 11pm (they're open until 2am on Fridays.) and there were at least a dozen other vehicles in their drive-in stalls. Ordered their specialties, a Superdawg and Whoopskidawg with Superfries, Chocolate Super Malt and Black Kows. Service was fast and friendly at 11pm on a Friday. We were eating in our rental car in apx 10 min. It was cool to eat outside on a warm July night in a classic, 1950s style drive-in. The food was excellent, flavorful and fresh. I normally avoid krinkle cut fries because they are usually frozen and mushy or mealy. Not Superfries. These fresh cut fries were practically fried mashed potatoes. We loved them! The drinks were perfect. The Black Kows is basically a root beer float and served with an extra root beer "sidecar." Our only complaints were about errors with the garnishes. We specifically said we wanted all the garnishes on both dawgs and they only gave us the standard grilled onions on the Whoopskidawg and forgot the sport peppers on the Superdawg.
