We just did an impromptu mom's lunch! It was a bigger group than I thought but I enjoyed it and the kids looked like they had a blast. It was my first time at the Charcoaler and the food was diner style, humble and cheap. I ended up going into the wrong lane and went through the drive thru and it's so cute! I got the chicken bits combo, large onion rings, and a cherry pie. It wasn't greasy and the cherry pie was the highlight. No baked pie masquerading as a fast food pie like McDonald's here...it was crunchy outside and moist and goeey on the inside, not too sweet, with a light dusting of powdered sugar on top. I loved that they had margaritas and sangria's and beer and are open til midnight on the weekends. It's a really nice place for kids with lots of games for free like huge sets of connect 4, Jenga, hula hoops, tetherball, sandpits, basketball, etc. What would make it even nicer is if they had misters outside. It was super hot and dusty and it would have helped the kids cooled down as they played. Super local and fun family place to go that's kid friendly and inexpensive. I'm not sure if it's new management or something else, but the quality of food is terrible. I ordered a chili hot dog, which apparently comes smashed and put in a burger bun. The meat was cold and tasted like nothing. Even the onion rings tasted like they just got dumped from the freezer into the fryer. I'm not sure if the food tastes different if you sit inside, but personally the drive-through meal was just terrible. read more

Service was, "eh". The one person that was delivering and taking orders looked like they didn't want to be at work. Not friendly but wasn't rude so no complaints just an observation. Ambiance was ok, picnic tables inside and not much else. So....I came here for the first time because of their advertising for their Grilled chicken salad. Thinking since you're promoting the salad it might be something they're proud of or it's worth coming to try it. Oh boy was I wrong with that thinking. That was thee worst salad I think I've had. I know it's a burger place but all the ads I've seen is this salad and onion rings. You'd be better off getting a salad at a gas station. It was terrible. I've been coming here most my life it's been very interesting to see all the ups and downs Charcoaler has gone through. I'm pleased to say I'd definitely recommend coming and trying my all time favorite the number 7 green chili burger with a side of onion rings and a milk shake or cold root beer . Back in the day this place only had a drive thru and you'd order then park in one of the bays like a and eat in your car. Now they have added a whole picnic area with games out front and an indoor dining area where you can order as well and have beer and wine . It's such a great El Paso experience , I used to come here with my grandparents get a burger and eat in the back seat with my cousins all piled in the car . It has a nostalgia about it that is similar to what you'd get at Top Notch in Austin which is famous from the movie Dazed and Confused except this place is way better haha . I currently live in Austin and every time I visit El Paso where all my family lives I have to drive to the westside and have some Charcoaler . Waited for the car ahead for 3 min. When my turn, 2 guys were working in front, 2 girls working a party outside. No one spoke to me, smiled, or even looked my way. After several minutes one cook used the register and then disappeared. No one working looked to be having any fun, just drudgery of having to be at work. After 10 minutes one girl came back into front, rang my order and told me the amount owed. She then picked up a sack that had been next to the register ever since I drove up to the window. Ordered #1 Double Burger w/cheese and cole slaw. The slaw was very good. The burger was on a dry room temp bun that showed no grill marks. The meat patties were room temp and very dry. Finally the last few bites had some BBQ Sauce. I have eaten hundreds of Charcoaler Burgers over the last 50 years, Westside and a long time ago, Eastside. An old standard just died a flaming death and it is so sad . My sister and I have ate at the charcoler since 1964 we grew up with Mr.Cox and Bobby. Last night we came back into town and had to go eat our favorite burger,my god we were excited to munch on the onions again! We they were having a benefit form the church we attended. And my grandparents attended it was crowded but not as bad as we used to see it. So not find a parking place we drive through and ordered. The guy had a bit of a hard time but we understood it was crowded. We noticed they kept running out because orders were wrong. Ok no problem . We got our order 3 number 3s one with green chili 3 Onion rings. We recieved 3 patties with nothing but cheese. Ok . We went up to the window and had them correct it . The new burger were dry smaller a tiny amount of BbQ and like one pickle! Oh well. The onion rings were a pile of grease. The buns are different dry hard not slightly toast and tasted like cardboard! THEN My sister after two bites pulled a piece of patty out of her mouth with a good SIX INCH BLOND HAIR EMBEDDED IN A CHUCK OF PATTIE!! I ALMOST THREW UP!!! I gagged We went to the window again and then saw a blonde girl VAPING IN THE BACK AREA!! WTF!!! Seriously? Vaping? They apologized and offered coupons we told them we just wanted our money back! This use to be my go-to burger place in town, unfortunately it has just gone downhill from there. Ambiance - They've kept the drive-thru with an extended restaurant/patio area. The restaurant and patio itself was very cute and pet friendly. Service - From waiting to order to actually getting food, it took 30 minutes for a drive thru (there was only one car in front of us). Not only that but the order was wrong. Food - The onion rings were cold and the patty was overcooked and charred. The crispy chicken was not crispy at all. Overall, I was really disappointed with the food this time. It definitely did not taste like this the last couple of times I was here. Overall, I'm happy they expanded and have a sit down area now, but if that comes at the price of lower quality food and efficiency it's not worth it. Quick, helpful, friendly, and even informed me of weekly specials! Outdoor seating is spacious and offers plenty of room for guests. There are XL games and sand pits (which my 2 little ones LOVED). So glad we finally decided to try Charcoaler! On Thursdays they sell their original burger for only $3. I got the original (minus the BBQ sauce & pickles) and added cheese, and it was super good. I thought the 2 patties might feel like too much meat, but with their thinner size it was perfect. My boyfriend got the chili cheese double, and while I thought it was good as well, the chili taste was a bit too much for me. I'd definitely come back and order the original. We took the burgers to go, but they have a drive-in area to park & eat. There is even a trash can to access from your car on the way out of the parking lot. Sorry to report it was a huge disappointment. Every one of the 5 burgers we ordered were incorrect. I mean, I must have asked 5 times to make sure they understood the order. I had not been here in a minute. HORRIBLE. The frankfurter is consistently undercooked. I asked for it well done. Onion rings and fries used to be iconic. Now? There is ZERO seasoning. No salt. No flavor. It's like eating air. At least the buns are the same and the spicy ketchup is special like always. What a COLLOSAL DISAPPOINTMENT. Oh Charcoaler! You bring me back to Yelp with excitement. I've been absent for a while because I really haven't been somewhere worth reviewing...that is until now. This location is newly updated and modernized and definitely not your parents Charcoaler! I'm so excited for and have been saying we need a good outdoor spot that has great views, fun activities, beer, and of course great food. This Charcoaler does all that and more! To start off the food is what you would expect of the classic Charcoaler and is absolutely delicious, with a great flame grilled burger cooked the way you like it. Fresh and crispy french fries though I would recommend the onion rings! They have updated their menu and now include scooped ice cream, veggie burgers, and a decent selection of beer. I would like to see some local craft brews on the list but you can tell they are working on getting some soon. The location is completely updated and the old, unused lawn space has been turned into a sport viewing, beer drinking, bring your kids destination spot. Corn hole, horseshoes, ring toss, giant jenga, and many other games are available to play at your leisure. Giant TVs are located throughout the area for your sport viewing pleasure and if you were wondering, yes, dogs are allowed!!! Of course there is a list of rules which you would think is common decency but its great to see it posted so that all can remember this is a public space and not your backyard. There are a variety of "El Paso" art pieces that just beg for you to take a picture and post on insta! Then there are awesome views of the Franklin Mountains that you just can't get anywhere else in the city! What's that? You say it's too hot to be outside? Well Charcoaler thought of that too. Just stay inside their new dinning space with ample space and air conditioning. I noticed they have a garage door opening and can only imagine how chill that would be on a cool night. The whole idea/concept of this old fashioned "drive thru" is cute. It's the whole reason I stopped. I've passed it countless times and it always seemed kind of just.. charming maybe?.... but they absolutely DO NOT pull it off. It's better to look at while driving somewhere with more appetizing food. Maybe I missed the mark by ordering something other than a classic burger and fries... but my chicken sandwich sucked. The chicken was thin and undercooked. And I kind of got grossed out watching it being prepared (Because you can see everything as you wait hours to receive your "fast food" purchases) And the onion rings were huge, thick slices grease-soaked onions with the undercooked batter falling off. I've been in El Paso for four years and finally decided to try out this iconic El Pasoan landmark. I got a #3 with lettuce, tomato, and green chili (all of which comes as extra and charged). But no biggie, the Charcoaler burgers seem to be better without the lettuce and tomatoes anyways so I suggest you go without. When I finally took a bite I was reminded of the McRib sauce. This may be the reason why when you order it, it comes only with their BBQ sauce, pickles, and onions. I wasn't wowed but it was still pretty good. Now I see why many others mentioned the size of the burger. It's pretty darn small and some people might be able to finish it in three to four bites if that. The fries were....fries. Ok, now on to the reason why I rated this 3-stars. Besides the size of the burger I have a slight issue with the pineapple pie I ordered. I bit into...whammy, nothing.
