My co-workers and I used to go to Portillos for lunch. Not any more. This place taste better, is competitively priced against Portillos, gives you more portion for the buck, and you get the famous free soup. We haven't gone back to Portillos ever since we found this place out. The decor is very nice, very modernized with big screens all over the place. They have a great staff, very friendly and respectful. I just love their mom-and-pop like environment, it feels just like home. I've had almost everything on the menu except the salads, club sandwiches, and desert and their stuff is real good especially their dinner plates. This place gets pretty packed during lunch time but the food comes out quickly. Also, the guy yelling out the numbers, he's definitely awesome, cause you can hear your number even from across the joint near the bathrooms in a area filled with people talking. This place is right by our office so I go here probably once or twice a month. I always get the same thing...Greek Salad with Chicken and pita bread. It's AMAZING, best salad EVER. They pile on the fresh veggies and feta cheese and it goes great with the grilled chicken. I'm not big on burgers or sausage, but my co-workers seem to like it. I was in today all excited about getting a nice big gyro plate with fries and mozzarella sticks. Charkies looked to be nice and clean and the menu has great variety. I arrived home and unwrapped the food only to find out they didn't give me my fries! A gyro plate without fries is tough bc i wasn't driving back to get them. The gyro was good as were the mozzarella sticks. HUGE letdown that they forgot my fries. Great food but if you can't get a simple order right when there was only 2 other people in the place that's not good. I wonder how the fries would have been? read more

I'd rather spend my $10 here rather than at McDonalds any day. I came here a week ago with 2 of my good friends. We wanted something quick and that's exactly what we got; it only took them 5 minutes to get out two pulled-pork combos and an Italian beef. For the quantity of food they give you and for the home-cooked feel, it's worth the $10 per person for a hefty sandwich, fries, and a drink. The staff was really nice too! The dining room itself is way bigger than I thought it was going to be when I first walked in. It's also a relatively cleanly place (something very hard to find now a days, please keep it up!), and they have really cute decorations all over the room and windows for the holidays. It just feels like a humble and welcoming place. The only reason I give 4 stars is because I personally didn't find much I liked on the menu, my friends thought the peppers on the beef weren't that tasty, and all of our fries were undercooked. But I'll stop by again if I'm in the area. read more

This place has phenomenal food. The Greek Chicken and BBQ Ribs are spectacular. We travel from Naperville to Charkies a couple times a month and it is well worth the drive. You would have to go to Texas to get close to their BBQ. Naperville's Ribfest does not compare. What a great find! read more

We used to love this little family restaurant. Good food esp Gyros and Greek chicken. But unfortunately we won't be going here any more. They have roped off the whole North dining area for video gambling - no one under 21 allowed in that area. When we came in my son was excited they were adding arcade games - no it was gambling - about 6 full size machines, gleaming where you can't miss them 2ft from where you get your drinks. I don't need my sons interest piqued in gambling at 12 because it looks fun. They could have at least made it less prominent in the back. Also a new push on alcohol with an A- frame sign on the sidewalk promoting drinking at Sunday lunch. I don't have a problem with drinking at a restaurant but it seems the atmosphere has changed. Too bad, was a fav. Also, the people could smile once in a while - never friendly there. read more

This is one of my favorite places to stop for a fast, but delicious, meal. My top picks there are the amazing Philly steak sandwich (made from a real strip steak, not some meat shavings) and the gyro ( with excellent cucumber sauce) . Either pick will leave you full and satisfied. The prices here are more than fair and the portions are great. Best of all are the people who work there. Where do I begin? I guess the first thing I'd like to say is this is the first review about anything I have ever written. That should indicate how strongly I feel about Charkies. First, the menu has a wide selection, but most of the food is garbage. I've given this place three chances and they have struck out each time. Maybe the menu lacks focus. Maybe they do one or two things really well. I'll never know if they do anything well because, at the end of the day, the food I've ordered sucked each time. That means I am done with this place. Second, the food is over priced. I mean, $8.00 for a dog, a fries, and a drink? Way too much for the quality of the food. Chain restaurants spread the cost of operating regionally and internationally over their entire chain which accounts for slightly inflated prices on the menu. Charkies is a one-off deal. There are no franchises (there will never be any franchises). Just look at other one-offs around Chicago. You pay five dollars (maximum) for the same food and you're getting better quality. Finally, the service sucks. This is the BIGGEST point and it is what compelled me to write this review. I was handed the worst lunch I've ever paid eight dollars to eat. That's a problem on its own, but there was a chance to fix it before I had it in my hands. With his back turned to me, the guy who took my order opened up my to-go box, looked at the food inside, shook his head a little, hesitated, and then handed me my food. This is why Charkies gets one star: they serve garbage food AND THEY KNOW IT. The gentlemen in question knew he was handing me a turd in a box and he let it happen. He had an opportunity to correct the problem and instead handed me garbage. Skip this place and let it fail. If you want over-priced food and shit service, you're better off eating a chain where you can at least expect consistent food. You'll be doing the community we live in a service by telling everyone you know that Charkies equals garbage. read more

This place is a gem, the food is scratch made and you will be hard pressed to find any better. You can taste the quality in everything from the steak sandwich to the chicken (which is marinated 24 hours before cooking) along with the daily specials, you can always find something that is satisfying and delicious. I love the salads which are made to order, filling and always fresh. On dine in orders the homemade soup is complimentary. They have a char-broiler which along with their way of seasoning the food imparts a great flavor to any meat item. They also offer vegetable plates which are cooked in a flavorful broth and very tasty. The owner and staff are very friendly and accomodating. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, this place is not to be missed! read more

Wow! I had no idea this place was going to be so good. Sorry I never tried it sooner. I had the Chicken Kabob Sandwich and the chicken was delicious! This place is fabulous.....we discovered it a few months ago and can't get enough of it. It's all cheers when I tell the kids we're going to Charkies. One says it's the best burger he's ever had and the other likes the hot dog and cheese fries. My husband works 2nd shift so it's normally just me and the boys and we have to bring him something or don't bring any lefties to indicate that's what we did for dinner. Last weekend we had a small party at the house and my husband finally talked me into not doing the cooking myself. Instead we did their catering, Gyros and all the fixin's plus Greek taters......loved it. The menu said the small size Gyros would feed 12 but we had plenty of food......very generous with the meat...lots of lefties. I think my two favorite things are the Souvlaki (shiskabobs) and the Tazaki sauce. I eat it on just about everything. Their's is fabulous, nice and thick. Go here more for convenience than any great food. Food is OK. Prices are high. You think you are starting off with a simple burger but beware, every little thing you put on there adds up and fast! Always see a cop in here eating when I go and the staff behind the desk talking loudly to one another. They will eventually stop and take your order. Then it will be ready 20 minutes or more later. Charkies is AWESOME!! My family and I went there for dinner tonight and we loved it. I had the shish kabob plate and it was delicious!! My kids loved the gyros also. Had reservations for dinner at Jamesons. After getting home from school/aftercare and doing homework, we cancelled. My son said he wanted to go somewhere "and chill" on his birthday. Lol. Stopped in today for the first time and I will definitely be going back. All I ordered was the gyros and it was very good and HUGE! The meat was tasty and there was plenty of onions and tziki (I know I am spelling this wrong) sauce. Service was a little on the slow side, but they were fairly busy at 6:45, so I won't let that deter me from going back. Several people ordered ahead and came in to pick up, so that may be the secret if you are carrying out. read more

First class service and first class food. This is my family's go-to when we don't have time to cook. The food is always fresh and consistent. I've never had a bad meal here. We've also catered from here many times and they provide generous portions for a reasonable price. One reviewer commented that they didn't like the cream of chicken soup because there was no chicken in it. They felt it should have been called "cream of rice" soup because there was only rice in the soup. I believe they were mistaken. They probably had the avgolemono soup, which is a Greek egg/lemon soup, that does not traditionally contain chicken. They only have it on the menu once a week, but when they do - phenomenal! read more
