I am extremely disappointed with the service we got this year. Last year, we called Murphy's for a blocked drain in a very old house (1946). The two guys (one was called Jay) worked their butts off with a snake and unblocked the drain (which has been problematic for years, by the way). They did an incredible job and I was extremely pleased with their work. About 12 months later (November 2024) I called the company again because I noticed the drain was getting blocked again. The guy they sent this time (Brian) snaked for less than 10 minutes, and spend more than an hour explaining how the drain is broken and they need to do a full replacement, a job of more than $2,500 to set up new drains in our house. He talked to my husband on the phone for a while explaining what he wants to do and recommending several options that were clearly problematic. In the end, they served us a bill of almost $450 leaving me with a pipe that still does not drain and the promise to do an estimate for what they explained would cost well above $3,000 -- which I don't have and which I had made perfectly clear to begin with. I am sure there may be honest, hardworking people at this company, and I don't want to hurt anyone who is trying to work hard and make an honest living. My last experience, however, was awful and leaves us strapped for cash, with a blocked drain and no reasonable solution, a week before Thanksgiving. I would not wish this on anyone else. read more

Charged $180 per hour and said it took 5 hours to install a toilet and a faucet. The total bill was over $900 and we supplied the new toilet and faucet. Just the labor was $900!!' It seems to me, if you are charging $180 per hour, you should know how to replace a toilet in less time. Said they would call me back at 8am to discuss and never called back. I live in a very old house in a very rural area in the mountains, located a considerable distance from the city of Frederick, where Murphy plumbing is headquartered. Based upon the recommendation of the original homeowner, who had been a faithful customer of this company since 1982, I have been using Charles F. Murphy plumbing for all of the indoor plumbing needs of my house since having moved into the house about 25 years ago. I have always received excellent service from all of the staffers at this company, and have always been very pleased with their work. Having said that, I want to point out that this is an old-school family-run small company, and they seem to have no wish to grow much larger, and thus it can sometimes take a day or two for them to send a plumber for certain non-emergency tasks. Now, what did I mean by the term "old-school" in the previous sentence? Well, what I mean is that they still do many things, including billing, the old-fashioned way. Their entire customer-tracking and billing system seems to be based upon paper records and perhaps a card file. Thus, I have noticed consistently across the years that I can take them many months to ever send a bill! Do you remember that I mentioned above that I live in a very rural area in the mountains? My house is located on a steep mountain slope, with a very steep and long -- and very narrow -- driveway, and the "yard" does not consist of any paved paths or mowed lawns, and rather the entire 5 acre "yard" is nothing more or less than forested mountainside covered with hundreds of 50 to 70 foot tall trees, rocks, fallen logs, and snakes. So, getting from the driveway or the front door of the house to the basement that houses the water tank, the pump controls, and the hot water heater can be a real challenge, as it involves negotiating very rough forest terrain on a steep slope littered with forest debris and rocks. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, for example, the task of replacing the hot water heater (which seems to happen about every 10 to 12 years) is not a simple job, as it means negotiating a rocky sloping route or "path" of over 120 feet across rough mountainside terrain. And yes, it means hauling the old water heater across that terrain from the basement to the truck, and it also means that the plumbers need to then transport the new hot water heater over 120 feet across the same rough terrain (and remember, it is all on a 28 degree slope...!) to get it to the basement. Nonetheless, the plumbers from Murphy have always tackled this task, and other like it, with aplomb, and have always done masterful work despite the challenges. By the way, speaking of my basement that houses the well pump controls, the water tank, and the hot water heater, I neglected, in my narrative above, to mention the fact that said basement has a dirt floor that is always muddy and wet (because the house is located in the mountains, and "because rain", and "because forest"), and the basement is occupied by several very large (and totally harmless) blacksnakes that eat the rodents (usually large rats) that are commonplace out here in the mountains. So, whenever a plumber from Murphy arrives at the house to do any work that may involve a visit to the basement, I always warn them up front that they may well encounter one or more of the large blacksnakes in the basement, and I reassure them that the snakes are harmless and will not bother them. Well, all of the plumbers from Murphy whom I have met to date always take in this information about the presence of snakes in the basement very calmly, and, across a period of over 25 years, they have never complained when they have occasionally bumped into one of the large blacksnakes down in the damp basement, nor when they have encountered a copperhead snake (a mildly-venomous pit viper common to this area) lying across the rocky path to the basement! Rather, they handle all of these challenges, including occasional visits from my nosy hens and roosters who might at times wander into the basement to supervise their work, with great calmness and aplomb! So, the bottom line is that I have been using this plumbing service for over 25 years, and have never had any problems with their work, and therefore, I feel that they deserve 5 stars! read more

Very disappointed. Two employees arrived to our home and spent 5 minutes to tell us what we had already told them the issue over the phone. They said we had to replace the ENTIRE kitchen faucet because the sprayer was leaking. The entire kitchen faucet, really? It's a freaking Moen! They said that it would be anywhere from $700 - $850 for these model. "We will have our office contact you about possible options that we could install". A week goes bye - Nothing. Two weeks go bye still Nothing!! A buddy suggested to just call Moen and see if they could help. Wow what service Moen provided not only sent a New Sprayer and hardware but video links to see how easy the repair was. All this for FREE. BTW got a call from CF Murphy Plumbing looking for $130 for the 5 minutes. You would think with all the follow up that I DIDN'T received from them they would be ashamed for asking. When I told them my story they didn't care and the office lady just said that wasn't her problem and that was a different department dropped the ball. I needed a part to fix the water spigot at the front of my house. After trying other places, someone recommended that I try CF Murphy. I went in with the whole stem from the spigot expecting to buy a new one. Charles was working the counter (I assume that it was Charles). He looked at the stem and then spent the next 20 minutes changing the washers and gaskets on it and lining up the joints. We had a nice chat about a few things that we found that we had in common. When he was done he tried to charge me $3 for the washers. I said, but what about your time for the last half hour? He said, how about we just round it up to $5. Apart from being nice and helpful, it was clear that he is a very knowledgeable professional. It felt a little bit like being in Mayberry. It was a pleasure to meet him and chat for a little bit. STAY AWAY! Their work is overpriced and shoddy! Furthermore, they do not show up at arranged appointment time ( which was to fix a job not done well in the first place!) If a higher priced job comes up, they will skip you without calling or giving any warning that they are not coming....wasting your valuable time waiting for them. This friendly, helpful company literally saved my sanity today. On the first day after our return from a two-week vacation, our old house's water pump went on the fritz and, thanks to my turning off the water softener in the middle of a regeneration, it sucked our very shallow well down to almost nothing. They got the pump working again and stopped the water softener process, and I'll just need to be careful with water usage for a while! $595 to replace the guts of a toilet? CF Murphy charges from "point to point," in other words, a customer pays for the time CF Murphy plumbers take to commute to the customer's home. Imo, the workers dawdled, thereby padded the bill. How? One worker asked to use the bathroom, which took 10+ minutes. Then the same worker spent 15+ minutes to prepare a bill. All in all, I was charged for an extra 1/2 hr after the workers finished, which cost me an extra $65. Btw, this is the first negative review I have ever written. read more

They were unable to fix the issue on the first visit. They had to return a second time, billed me a second time, and charged a service fee monthly for 4 months after no notice of missed payment for the 2nd bill until 4 months later. They were unwilling to refund the service fees when I called and asked why I received this bill 4 months later having thought I was paid up. Would not recommend. read more

Three times they came out to clear my sewer line. Twice they said it was fixed. The third time they gave mme an estimate of $7000 to dig up my front yard and replace the line because it was absolutely certainly collapsed. And then repairing the front yard would be another couple thousand but I would have to get someone else to do it. So I called another plumber for an estimate. They ran their camera through all the way across the street no problem. In all I spent over $2000 to have Murphy NOT fix the problem. My basement flooded with raw sewage three times so the floor has to be replaced. Murphy's incompetence has cost me thousands. Buyer beware. read more

I called Murphy's on a Monday night when the hose to my kitchen sink needed to be replaced. They seemed helpful and called me at 7:30am Tuesday to tell me a plumber would be out in 15 minutes. He came and told me the hose to my sink was leaking, as I was already aware of. He said it was a problem with Moen faucet hoses and that he had done at least 30 replacements of hoses. Then he called two plumbing warehouses. The first one said they could get one by tomorrow morning and the other was checking to see if they had one in stock. The second one was to call him back. He continued to walk from his truck to my house from 7:45 till after 9:00. I asked him if he heard from the second place and if not, "why not just go to Home Depot and get one?" He said, "we only use commercial grade." He waited a few more minutes and then called them back. They didn't have one, so he would have to come back the next day. Then he charged me $195.00!!!! I asked if this was for the complete service and he said "No, there would be another charge in the morning for $130.00!!! I called Murphy and talked to the secretary and explained that paying over $300 for a 5 minute job and a $15 hose to be installed was totally unreasonable. She said they would make an adjustment for the installation. The man came back and took all of five minutes to install the hose. He then handed me a $95.bill. He said the price was reduced from $165. I will never use this company again. Two days of not having use of my kitchen sink and then being price gouged is a terrible way to do business. I found several very competent plumbers who told me they would have charged $65 to $100 for the same job I paid $290 for. A reputable company would have asked for the serial or model number and a picture over the phone, then ordered the part. They would have made one trip and charged less than half of $130. an hour. I used to deal with this business in the past so I called when my toilet tank leaked.The receptionist was very nice.Unfortunately when the tech came out , who was a nice guy, the company gave him the wrong part which he did not realize until after the toilet was disassembled. I spoke with John a " owner" who was arrogant and said he would charge me again when they got the right part in.He wasn't even going to put the toilet back together until I told him I would not pay for the visit unless he did. A water main leak is one of a homeowner's worst nightmares: there is no way to tell where the leak is until you begin digging up your yard, and the bill can run to several thousand dollars. Needless to say, when I discovered I had a leak (tipped off by an unexpected $400 water bill), I did my homework to find a reliable and trustworthy plumber. The best referral I got was for Charles F. Murphy, a long-established family business in Frederick. The same day I called, John Murphy came to my home and assessed the situation (in so far as that's possible with a leak that's six feet underground). My anxiety about the potential cost and the destruction to my yard was obvious, and John went far out of his way to make me feel confident about the repair. He easily spent an hour with me: explaining the procedure, what the unknowns were, and presenting me with a couple of cost options for the repair. He even showed me samples of the pipe they would use. By the time John left, my misery had dissipated, I had a quote for service in my hand, and his team was ready to begin the next day. As it turned out, my leak was near the house (as John suspected), so the damage to my yard was minimal. The crew helped me move some of my plants, dug the smallest hole they could so as not to disturb my garden, made the repair the same day, and then after the inspection, they filled the hole, sprinkled grass seed where the backhoe had been sitting, and laid straw over the seed. Can I just say how thrilled I was at this attention to detail? The repair was quick, the price was fair, the payment terms were generous, and the entire crew provided superlative customer service. I can't say enough good things about CF Murphy, and I would hire them again in a heart beat. read more

They showed up on time. Very professional . They replaced my hot water heater, carried away the old hot water heater and the one that conveyed with the house years ago. When I called the gathered the necessary information needed to bring the right size gas water heater. They couldn't use the one they brought because of the type of venting system I had. They quickly went out and brought the right size and vent I needed. They were gone only about 30 minutes and one guy stayed behind, draining and disassembling the old unit. Now that shock has worn off a bit, I feel like I can finally share what happened and how grateful I am. Last Wednesday by the grace of God I saw that our basement ceiling was leaking!! Not only did we just move into this house a little over 2 months...I had no clue what to do. To say I freaked out is an understatement. Without spending too much time dwelling on the bad, I'm so thankful for the previous owner answering his phone, he tried to help me over the phone and then suggested which plumbing company to call. Called the plumbing company only to hear there was no one there to help "all the guys were out on other jobs!" My heart sank and I started to feel more helpless. Right before the person hung up she said hold on, later found out her name is Gloria, they went above and beyond to help me. They were so nice and fixed the water leak. I called CF Murphy for a simple estimate of a sewer pipe from my house to the street, and to check out the condition of and service my Gas Furnace. I was referred to them by a lady who has been using them for over 30yrs. This lady happens to be a local Millionaire. I called them a whole month in advance, and was told they had 10 to 14 estimates ahead of me, and it would take a Month to get back with me on an estimate. I told them I would be purchasing the house in a month and needed a quicker estimate, and since they are located on Rosemont (right down my street), I thought I would give my business to a local business owner. They said they still could not help me, and in so many words basically told me that if it was something that could put immediate $$$$ in their pocket they were prepared to come out immediately. Quoting me 96/hr Labor, extra for a second helper etc.....etc.....They could come out pretty much immediately for that, however; not for an estimate. Instead I called a Plumber in Williamsport, MD. He told me he would be glad to come out immediately within the next 2 days, and would be more than happy to give me an estimate, as well as repair anything needed. Keep in mind, Williamsport is an hour away. CF Murphy....5 minutes away. Wow, I did not know that it takes a month to do 14 estimates. A good friend of who lives out of state in Florida, and happens to be a plumber, does 3 to 4 estimates a day. That's about 12 in three days. What does this estimator do the other 27 days of the Month. CF Murphy......You should be ashamed that a 'Referral Customer', was treated this way. Wow!!! read more

I have a water main that runs from the street into the basement, where it connects to my house pipes. There was a leak right at that connection. The plumber came and said "oh, no one is going to touch this, you have to change this whole pipe because it's old city pipe and the city of Frederick is making everyone change these". Then they sent an estimate for $2400. I called another plumber who came in and fixed a leak for $200 dollars. The leak is gone. I did call the city to ask if they want these pipes changed. They said they did but many people have those and they still function well. So seems like the guy just wanted to get the most expensive job he could out of a small leak. Murphy's recommended to take out a side-walk, dig out the pipe, put a new pipe in. And all that for a small leak. Maybe one day that will need to be done. But if I can fix the leak now and the pipe is fine, and that is 200 bucks, I'll take that any day over $2400 for made up work. read more

I've used them before and have never been disappointed. I had an outside hose bibb that hasn't worked in several years. I finally got tired of dragging a hose around the yard in order to use my other faucet. I called them and they were at my house in less than an half hour. As sometimes happens he didn't have the exact replacement part and had to go back to the office and pick up the necessary parts. In all, it took less than 2 hours from the time I called until he was through. I thought the charge was very reasonable, I was sure it would be which is one of the reasons I called them. We had a laundry room installed upstairs last March, for the most part the staff was friendly and the work was good. One of the plumbers however was always smoking out front of the house and smelled of smoke that we could smell after they left. I suggest to be professional to not smoke on any of the properties and on your own time, not when we are paying 120 dollars an hour. We discovered a leak coming from the drain pan in the recently installed laundry room. The plumber could not find the leak and we were charged 100 dollars for 15 minutes to cut a hole in the ceiling, the conclusion, someone must have gotten startled a spilled water on the ceiling a floor. I found the leak later that week by pouring water in the drain pan, not hard. We have since called several times to get the issue fixed and a reimbursement for the cut hole in the ceiling. We have been told several times that we will receive a call back and have not received that call. I called again for the fifth time today and I caught Mr. Murphy "with his trousers down". We have also had issues with not receiving a bill and being charged interest for paying late and them claiming we have not paid though the money has been taken out of our account. I suggest finding another plumber service for your needs. They received 1 star as opposed to none for the two of of three plumbers we have meet are nice and the original work done, professionalism is out the door and stress in dealing with them is unacceptable. read more
