Given his proximity to Hopkins this is for all intents and purposes a college bar, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. Even years after I graduated, i still have really fond memories of the times I had at Charles Village Pub ( CVP ), getting a blue moon with an orange slice and watching sports on tv, or ending my night out back at my home Pub here and getting a plate of fries that I don't think I'll ever taste better parentheses maybe because I was always drunk when I had them haha) Don't get me wrong, you'll also see a healthy mix of locals at this bar as well. This bar is essentially on the edge of where the off-campus college buildings were, and further down the road you start to see most of the residential row homes and such. read more

Ambiance: A little run down, small but cozy pub, it is something that I expect in a college town. The focal point seems to be the bar where most folks sit with a TV, chatting with bartenders who are super friendly, also waited our booth table. There are a couple high table by the window and the rest are booths. Food & Beverages: They have some good selection on drafts and I had the weizen beer which was good. Regular pub menu with salads and sandwiches, all very delicious at the college price point. Service: Super friendly bartenders, no fuss, get you what you need, refill your water without having to asked, etc. I left my phone at the table and didn't realize it for about 10 mins after we left, ran back to the pub and the lady immediately handed back to me. I used to come here for a cocktail after class when I did my Masters degree at UB... actually was known as a singles bar when I was there.

There was one table available left outside. We nabbed it. There was seating inside. I think it was every other table blocked for Covid spacing. Honestly surprised that a bar bathroom was as clean as it was! All staff were wearing masks. I ordered the 8 oz burger and fries. Waiter didn't hear me and I got chips and sour cream and onions dip. I'm glad he made the mistake. The chips and dip were delicious. The fries, were very good. They were a little over salted and peppered for my taste but if you're drinking a beer to wash it down, then they're salty enough for you to order another beer. The burger was outstanding. I met up with a friend here on a Thursday night after my flight into Baltimore. I arrived at 11pm and was happy to see that the kitchen didn't close till 1am. CVP reminds me of the show Cheers it seemed like everyone knew each other's name. The atmosphere was very friendly and you could tell a lot of locals frequent this quaint pub since most of them seemed to have walked to get here. There are a few televisions so definitely a great spot to watch the game at if you can snag a seat at the bar or a table. Our bartender Jackie was amazing, she was very friendly and everyone loved her so much that as the regulars walked in they would not sit down before giving her a hug. She makes a great lemon drop martini and based upon that and and the love she gets from the customers I'm sure every thing else she makes is great as well. I had been craving for a Maryland Crab Cake for some time now and this was my first stop during my visit so I ordered one. I'm a advocate for sticking to what a restaurant specializes in and bars and pubs you typically stick with the basics. My Crab Cake was broiled, a tad burnt but very large. I would not recommended the crab cakes here, if you are a Baltimore native like me you probably know several spots to get a well made one but this satisfied my desire on a late Thursday night. The fries that came with the Crab Cake were good. I was impressed with CVP. This little hole in the wall on St. Paul Street has lots of character. read more

Worse service I've ever experienced. Waitress with light brown hair, braid, striped long sleeve shirt, and black jeans needs an attitude fix. She took our orders with an obvious short temper and served our drinks with intense eye rolls. She even said "get out of the f*cking aisle" when one of my friend's shoulders was in the way. Hopping bar with tons of food flying out of their kitchen. We sat near the kitchen and cash register. Thoroughly entertained by the staff. TNF game on the tube in addition to some hockey. We can hear each other. Natty Boh on tap! Delicious authentic unadulterated buffalo wings which was a nice change for our upstate New York Veteran selves. The little hottie staff kept doing dirty dance moves which was pretty funny. They really lightened up the mood and kept it fun. Kudos to them for having fun! We will be back, a lot! read more

I've been in the Charles Village area for about 5 years, and CVP has always been a constant friend. I use to live in Old Goucher and CVP was just my "let me chill here while I'm doing laundry" but now CVP is my "let me go see what the local crazies are up to today"...and yes, I'm including myself in the Crazy Crowd. For some it's a place to have a quick family lunch or dinner. For some it's a sports bar. For others it's a great place to eat and drink with friends. It's called the Charles Village Pub. In my family we know it as le Pub. My granddaughter always orders the chicken fingers (with honey ranch for dipping). My daughter orders the Greek salad with grilled chicken. What do I order? What would I recommend? Well, there's the shrimp salad. On the plate, or as a sandwich, it's the best I've ever eaten. My nephew and I agree, the chicken salad is the best, ever! Thank you Chef Joe, Chef Eddie, and Eddie's mom!!! What else? Let's see, there's the chicken cheese steak and the cheese steak, the Catonsville club, the Goucher club, delicious burgers and baby back ribs. This place is utterly cool. Here you are at the door step of one of the best and most expensive schools in America and you have a gritty cool sports pub that could be in any neighborhood in the city. A lil divy but not really divy at all. Lots of sport stuff on the walls including Os, Ravens, and Hopkins LAX. They have an old style pull the handle cigarette machine. The staff is super friendly. We entered with our 8 year old and ask with concern if he could be there. A drippy, happy yes. Extremely good service the night we went. Wife had fish and chips which were ok, slaw was great. I had a rib dinner that was delish but really pub ribs and not a BBQ shop style. The wings were fab. Seriously. Ask them to mix BBQ sauce and their hot sauce and you get a GREAT sauce. Good beer selection. Had a Monument City Rye 51 IPA which is becoming a choice of mine. Great pub...good atmosphere...nice people...diverse crowd. read more

I used to come here all the time for lunch. I'm not sure if it changed hands due to C19 or what but what a disappointment. 2-3 things so far that are featured on their more condensed menu don't even resemble the description. They have a BLT with Avocado which was always so delicious. These days it's actually served without the Avocado which makes no sense and the flabby uncooked pork meat served instead of bacon is inedible. How can you serve an inedible uncooked sandwich to someone and charge $16? It's a disappointment and this was not a one-off unfortunately. I can't justify going back, not at those prices and fir such poor product. read more

Went here for the first time for lunch on a Monday. Both bartenders were friendly but Amanda B. was most impressionable. I didn't know what booze concoction I wanted so she suggested a tequila sunrise. She did a good job in preparing it and she recommended the buffalo chicken sandwich with blue cheese. The sandwich was above what I expected for the price I paid. It was grilled and dipped in buffalo sauce, topped with blue cheese, and sandwiched between a soft bun. I have been coming to this bar for almost a decade now and although I have and always will love CVP, I am just now compelled to write a review. THEY HAVE A NEW COOK!!! And OMG what a difference he has made. They food has always been just ok. Something to coat your stomach for the awesome drinks the bartenders pour. I had the buffalo wings and they were delicious! I'm sincerely using delicious to describe the food at CVP, I would have never imagined! I'm so looking forward to the new menu, which will only enhance the already awesome bar atmosphere they have going. A true classic. Great dive bar feel, awesome beer selection and a vast menu that should meet or beat everyone's expectations. It's bar food, but it's above avg. bar food. The bartenders were incredibly rude. A group of people (including me) at the bar ordered six shots, at which point we told the first bartender we will need them split up between a couple tabs (3 to be exact). The bartender immediately passed the order onto the second tender, who, after delivering the shots, let out an exacerbated sigh at our request. After dividing them, he said we were missing one, though we were not, and explained this to him, apparently he didn't listen. At the end of the night when closing out, one tab was (surprisingly) overcharged. The bartenders were both arguing, and ended up actually raising their voices at us. It has been 4 days, the charge still hasn't been updated to reflect the correct amount. This is a place for people who want rude bartenders, shit drinks, and a terrible time. read more

Looking for a place to play pinball when I discovered that Charles Village Pub has two pinball machines. I excitedly hopped on my bike and cruised on down the road with a stack of quarters jangling away in my pocket. I approach the pub and see two beautiful pinball machines (Ripley's Believe It or Not and Elvis) right in the front window, beckoning passers by to come in and have some fun. I excitedly order a draft and approach the machines. I pop a few quarters in to Ripleys and within moments I come to find that there are many mechanical issues with the game rendering it virtually unplayable. I am quite dismayed but figure that I can at least satiate my craving for the silver ball with The King by my side. I move over to Elvis and a quick inspection of the playfield tells me that I probably shouldn't get my hopes up. The inside of the machine looks more like a dirt bike track than a pinball machine. I decided to take her for a spin anyway. That spin lasted about 15 seconds before the machine registered that I had lost my ball while it was still in play. I was able to play long enough to discover that one of the flippers didn't work and the thing was an overall POS. THE WORST PART is that when I reported that the pins didn't work to the bartenders, they didn't care and did not even offer me a refund. Honestly, I consider the Charles Village Pub guilty of false advertising. Do not put bunch of pinball machines in your front window if they are broken and you have no intention of fixing them this is false advertising and a ploy to STEAL YOUR MONEY. CVP has changed over the years. And that's for the better. You would think that this type of bar would have mediocre food, but I have to give it to CVP, they've changed my mind. They have some very decent solid food. I can't speak for everything on the menu, but as far as I can tell the things I've had (burgers, sandwiches, wraps) are decently made. Nothing amazingly spectacular, but better than you'd think. An exception from the list of things i've had are the nachos. They're just store bought nacho chips with cheap melted cheese and conglomeration of the usual veggies, etc. Not cohesive..nothing that truly brings it together. One qualm I have is that most of their stuff comes with ruffle chips ..and it's about a 2$ charge to add fries. The fry portions are large though so maybe share with a friend. Their big daddy pub burger (13 ounces), if you are just looking to get destroyed by a hunk of red meat, is good and gives you a laugh thinking about it afterwards. They often don't cook it to your desired temp because of the thickness..they have a hard time with ti...but it's hit or miss. The quesadilla! Cheese and jalapenos ON THE OUTSIDE as well as the cheese on the inside. The cheese on the outside creates a nice crust. What a simple, yet genius idea. Half off munchies 4pm-6:15 I believe ...but i'm not sure what days (This also excites me because they never had food deals really) Call to figure out when they have this deal (This week they had it on a monday and then to my surprise on friday ...but not sure if it's consistent) Munchies are mostly fried appetizer kind of things. Chicken tenders, 12 wings, egg rolls, etc Good drinking food. All for about $4 during this munchie happy hour deal. Some things do stay the same. They are busy during normal pub hours because of it's location where there is a lack of bars for the students/charles villagers. The waiters/waitresses are accommodating but can be so busy (ratio of workers might need to be adjusted) that they can take 5-10 minutes longer than normal (normal even for busy hours). But it's fine. Chill, drink, munch and talk with friends. All in all, it is Charles Village's pub, it gives off that environment, has the right kind of buzz, not obnoxious, a good mix of different type of people (older, students, everyday charles villagers. Nothing special in terms of decor, but that really isn't tops my list. You know what is? Stiff drinks, cheap beers and personable staff. Check, Check, Check. Here's a tip, go when Joey's cooking, and if he is ,get his special. If Steve's cooking get the chicken quesadilla. Josh & Tony are great bartenders. They'll take care of ya. All the waitresses are good people too. Oh yeah, and Joe Leahy washes a mean dish. Down side: It's next to JHU so yeah that crowd sucks. But there's typically a divide. The good old CVP. I live a few blocks away, so I find myself here pretty often. The food is good, although it does take quite a while to come out of the kitchen sometimes, and the waitstaff is awesome. The energy of the bar is pretty chill, so its a nice place to grab a bite and a brew on my random nights off and then stumble back home. It can get a little crowded sometimes as it is one of the more popular destinations in Charles Village, so if you want to sit down for dinner on a weekend, get there early as their seating is limited. Altogether a great place. Honestly, I'll probably be there again tomorrow because its just so damn convenient. read more
