The good old CVP. I live a few blocks away, so I find myself here pretty often. The food is good, although it does take quite a while to come out of the kitchen sometimes, and the waitstaff is awesome. The energy of the bar is pretty chill, so its a nice place to grab a bite and a brew on my random nights off and then stumble back home. It can get a little crowded sometimes as it is one of the more popular destinations in Charles Village, so if you want to sit down for dinner on a weekend, get there early as their seating is limited. Altogether a great place. Honestly, I'll probably be there again tomorrow because its just so damn convenient. read more

Very unimpressed with this location. I only frequent because of how late the kitchen is kept open and because the male staff had phenomenal customer service. Food is mediocre. Female staff, however, is the most poorly mannered group of associates I have ever encountered. Do they understand the phrase customer service? Witnessed an off-the-clock employee (Steph, I think) yell at a guest, who was waiting for her to-go order to be corrected, about where the patron was standing. Only paid attention to this interaction because the guest was asked to have her assistance animal leave the facility just minutes before returning with the incorrect order. Steph asked the patron, "are you in law school? Because you're really annoying". The young server who had initially said something to the patron about the dog had then jumped into the discussion only to agree with her belligerent coworker. Steph then approached the guest once more to continue with the rude remarks and tried to involve herself with the situation even more, requiring the blonde bartender to tell her to calm down and keep quiet. read more

You can never go back as they say. In Baltimore, it's always true. Things change in the blink of an eye or over the course of several years and anyone's who has ever tried reliving their college haunts will find them.....well haunted. Such was the same with a visit to Charles Village Pub as I was skipping out of town and wanted to catch a drink with a pal before I bounced. I noticed everything was much newer, so CVP deserves much credit for the reforms and renovations that they enacted while I was away. The TVs were nicer and the sports themed decorations and pictures were as plentiful as I remember. Of course our old bartender was no longer there and the bar seemed staffed with some Hopkins folk while people in the background talked of finals, papers, and projects - oh my! We got some gin and tonics which were strong and fit the bill. They added lime when I ordered water on the side which I didn't like, but I appreciated the nice gesture. We had some nachos that were nowhere near as good as anything in Chicago, but there aren't any Mexican restaurants in Baltimore to show them how to do it right. The chicken fritters were as good as I remember and the dressing saved the day. My friend and I passed the time by delightfully catching up and the noise level was fine. Missing of course were the old friends who all split ways and the short walk back to my row house, but that is none of CVP's fault. While they did upgrade the bathroom facilities, it still stank of homelessness in there. Some things never change. read more

I'm giving the CVP 5 stars because it is my favorite neighborhood pub in the whole world. This was my local pub while I lived around the corner from it. Don't bother with the food if you care about your health or authentic ingredients, but you'll find authentic Charles Village all around you. The music ranges from decent to hilarious, the booths are sticky and torn, the beer is good, the waiters are friendly. Oh, places that are so very lovable, for little reason at all. read more

I love CVP, but it isn't a destination bar unless you live down the street. As a Hopkins grad, this was my usual place to go any night during the week. CVP has a weird mixture of people ranging from 18 year old students to 60 year old locals - but that's what makes the place so cool. I've been there at midnight on a Sunday with two of my girlfriends and a (possible) homeless guy, but we still had a great time. They have great happy hours, it is the best place to go Friday afternoon starting at 4pm, where rail drinks are 2 for 1. The drinks are strong and they keep coming! The food there is also good typical bar food, I always get the BBQ chicken wings - they are awesome. If you're starving and feeling up to a challenge, you can get the 'Big Daddy' hamburger which is 13oz. Almost all of the time the bartenders and waiters are super friendly. If you come here often enough you get to know them pretty well. It's a place to go and you randomly run into your friends and you almost always stay much longer than planned. If you live in the area, it's a great neighborhood bar, either to have one beer, or go all out for happy hour. I wish I had a bar like this down the street from me here in San Francisco. read more

Went for happy on a Wednesday. They have $5 crushes all day everyday if you like those that's a pretty good deal. There was a menu and apps seemed to be about $8-10 for most items beside chips and salsa which were $5. I didn't see another menu for happy hour app prices so I was unaware of any food specials that I see in other reviews so overall the apps are more expensive than other barfood bars in Towson. There was a flyer for good specials like $2 domestics during Orioles games...it also included some pitcher and wing specials as well. read more

A hole-in the wall bar near the Johns Hopkins campus but very much with a vibe for locals. It has a good drink selection and an interesting food menu. There's a good amount of bar seats and booths, particularly for the space. It seemed well staffed and service was generally positive despite it getting a bit busy. It has a dive-feel but without really being dive. Definitely will stop by again when around Charles Village! read more

If you're a sports fan, plenty of TVs to catch your favorite games. And if you're not a fan of sports, no worries, (good) music is always played on the house speakers, never sports commentary. Great Happy hour! 2 4 1 drinks and half off appetizers! In the winter time it is always cozy in there lol I live near here so I come all the time. Its a great neighborhood bar. Although, I don't know how often I would come if I didn't live around here. The bar food is ALWAYS decent and the bartenders are pretty nice. This little young lady... Anyone ever notice this bar used to have very cheap prices listed on the online menu, only to go in later for food or takeout and get an "Oh that was the old price" line? They did this for years. The price should even be lower than that old fake online one; the food is just not good. Without the CVP in Towson, the Charles Village location would likely close. And to the city parking attendants: if you keep ticketing/towing the rest of us, take note of the big shiny black car that magically inches a little forward, then a little backward again, until 2am, no permit, every single day and night of the year. He parks, sits, and stares right at it 24/7. Maybe that was where that extra "old price" cost was going, or he's just extra special. You know what is great about CVP? --It is down the street from Hopkins. So if you find yourself at Hopkins in need of a beer, you are a mere stumble away. --It is the kind of place where you can almost always get a table, and just drink, or drink and order food, or meet a bunch of friends and then drink and order food, or go by yourself... --It is the kind of place where the bartender wears funny tee shirts. After spending two summers at Hopkins wrangling genius children, this place was a breath of fresh air. Er. Not really. Lot of smokers out front, including moi. The atmosphere is nothing special, the food is the standard fare (I tend to go here when I really crave a bar burger), and beer selection isn't going to blow your mind. but you don't go to the CVP for the atmosphere. If you live in the area and want a beer on a weeknight, this is a good choice. Weekends tend to see it crowded with JHU students. My boyfriend and I are living short term in the area and we happy to find a local pub in walking distance. We like divey kind of bars, so thought CVP would be right up our alley. Our first visit was uneventful, nothing good or bad, slow service at best. We typically sit at the bar, and I imagine service would be better there, but the bar was full on both visits. We visited tonight and sat in the booth again. The music was very loud, but my partner sat beside me and it was fine. We ordered a couple beers, but the service went downhill from there. It appears the servers work all the tables so you never know who will check on you, and I guess this causes confusion because we would go 15-20 min without refills. We finally both ordered burgers, and although our server asked how we wanted them cooked (medium) ,they both came out well done. We paid extra for baked potatoes, and mine was undercooked, while my boyfriend's was burned on the bottom. A server brought out our food and took my boyfriend's empty glass without asking if he wanted another beer. No, we didn't complain about the food as we should have, but we are pretty easy going. Most of this would be forgivable had we been checked on more frequently or asked how out food was. Overall, it was just disappointing. We aren't from Bmore, and were looking for a short term local hangout, but I guess we will have to drive to Fells Point or another part of town for that. read more

Not quite Cheers but still one of those places where you feel most of these people know each others' names. Located on a prime strip in the middle of John Hopkin's, this pub appears to be a no frills kind of place to sit and watch the game or chat with a few people while enjoying an adult beverage. The interior is nothing to look, a simple bar with a few TV screens sprinkled without. Staff is welcoming and booze pours are decent. Bar food is available but nothing special as I only had a couple of fries. Drop in for a cocktail or beer to unwind after a night on the town or on a lazy afternoon. read more

I've been here a couple of times with my friend after work for happy hour. They have 2 for 1 wine! That's dangerously awesome. I've had their southwest egg rolls and clam strips. They were both what you'd expect; the clam strips come with cocktail sauce, but I prefer tartar sauce and extra lemon and they had no problem obliging. The fire alarm in my building went off last night signaling that it was probably time to go out and grab a beer. Charles Village doesn't have a ton of options for this so I finally decided to go into CVP. The beer prices were great (two craft beers for under $10 is about as good as it gets!) and the service was friendly enough. The atmosphere is exactly what you expect: a college bar. Which was perfect for our purposes anyway. If you're craving a cheap drink and some bar food this seems like a good bet. read more

(5/26/2014) Still mostly the same old CVP. A long, long time ago, I spent a lot (A LOT) of time here as a college undergrad. While there's been a little bit of updating, the place remains as I remember it. It a local bar, flooded with undergrads at happy hour and late night, squatted by graduated students on weekend afternoons, frequented by neighborhood denizens pretty much any hour of any day. Once spring break, Christmas and summer hit, population drops by about 80%. Pretty much sports is what they've got on the TVs and most people there will be watching, especially the O's. They've got a heavy hand (and large glasses) for the rail mixed drinks, decent pub grub, and all at reasonable prices. Def not a destination place, but stop by if you're in the 'hood. read more

Charles Village Pub (aka CVP) is the place to become a local. And it only takes two or three times and the guys (or a gal) will remember your name. This place is adjacent to the Hopkins campus, but I am never annoyed with the amount of Hopkins students at the bar (either they go somewhere else or change once they enter). Their kitchen closes at 1, so it's also a good place to stumble into for late night eating (and of course drinking). The beer is reasonably priced, and their happy hour is not bad either (half-off apps and $2.50 Magic Hat...and then some.) The mix is always fun, especially if you decide to go alone. I sometimes go by myself just so I can sit at the bar and have a weird conversation with an even weirder stranger. And I've never had the same two conversations, either. Fred is the man. Bigger guy usually wearing a hat, and always wearing Baltimore gear. Tony is good, too. So ask for either of them and you'll be set. Not the fanciest place, but neither is Baltimore. CVP is a bar meant for this city. read more

Christopher H. has forced me to confront some repressed CVP memories. And I'm not even paying the guy anything to help me heal these still sore wounds of nearly a decade of living in Baltimore (minus all those times I strayed across the Atlantic, that is). So this one goes out to you, my Reisterstown friend. I hope all that fresh country air is helping you get rid of the 1980s-era cigarette smoke you must have inhaled along with all those beers and burgers when living the charmed life in Charles Village. So ... let's begin, shall we? It's the late 1990s, and there were basically two options for JHU drinkers in the Homewood area: CVP or PJ's Pub. PJ's was supposed to be the undergraduate bar, while the CVP was "higher end" and thus for graduates. So much for the theory. Of course, the Baltimore bar scene, esp. in places like Mt Vernon, Fell's Point, or Canton, is much more diverse than the usual St. Paul Street suspects, and neither CVP nor PJ's are gonna' win Michelin stars anytime soon. The menus were just not that sophisticated, and neither were the patrons. They wanted to get a buzz, forget about job searches, dissertations, final exams, GPAs, and probably the upcoming parent's weekend, so all that you needed was pub grub, beer bottle specials, some occasional shots, and you were good to go. I never got into the CVP scene, mind you, other than to tag along when friends prevailed upon me to do so. I was the wine tasting, microbeer quaffing, and premium bourbon drinking flâneur for whom the idea of a cheap beer was a Sam Adams, a Saranac, or a Yuengling. Maybe Rolling Rock, but that was as far as I was willing to go (at least while still sober). I was past 30 when I drank my first Bud from a plastic brown bottle one St Patty's Day in Canton. Who knew they made such things? So my memories of the CVP, like the food, are mediocre ones. But I still came to respect the place and would urge you to stop in once, twice, or three times (if you're a lady, or with one) and see why I feel this way. So much so that I've crossed the continent once more (virtually speaking) to Yelp one of my Baltimore war horses. What, you might ask, would persuade me to do so? Blackmail? Memories of sex in the bathroom? (never happened, and if you saw the toilets, you'd understand why). My initials are on all the video games? I made a killing on the video poker machines? No, no. no. It's not like that at all. The CVP is a survivor in a city where lots of good people and good businesses die on a pretty regular basis. Whether you fall victim to crack or Starbuck's-style corporate capitalism, you end up in the same place: six feet under and with bills left unpaid. As Charles Village gentrified in the late 90s and early 00s, when franchises like Ruby Tuesdays, Border's, and Subway took over precious CV real estate, and while the Baltimore Development Corp oversaw the razing of historic and livable row houses to make way for $300,000+ urban-chic condos and nouveau riche penthouses, the CVP stayed pretty much the same, even if the clients did not and the place got some superficial cosmetic makeovers to please the new, out-of-town neighbors. It's local, it's likable, it's gonna keep pouring watery beer from bottles and serving battered stuff fresh from the deep fryer for years to come. And JHU students will rejoice, alongside the other CVP denizens to make this place "their" hangout, makeout, and boozeout spot of choice. For me, though, that's not enough to get a 4 or 5-star rating, as much as I admire their pugnaciousness and Charm City pride. I recall a line from Lawrence and Lee's 1955 play "Inherit the Wind," at the end of Scene III where Brady (i.e. WJ Bryan) asks Drummond (Clarence Darrow) why the two of them, once good friends in law school, had drifted so far apart that they would defend opposite sides of the Scopes Monkey Trial on the right to teach evolution in the American classroom. Drummond responds that they had not DRIFTED apart at all. Rather, he had evolved and moved on, embracing modernity, while Brady had been content simply to stand still. That's how I feel about the CVP, in the end. They've been standing still while others have been moving on. And that ain't a good strategy if you live in a globalizing world. So, clean the place up. Embrace your inner gastropub. Start serving organic. Put sweet potato fries on the menu and serve some locally-grown mesclun on the side. Hell, maybe then Tony freakin' Bourdain will show up at your doorstep to get pissed on camera. Raise your beer prices a bit but serve better stuff, like Tröegs or Avery or Stone Brewing. That's what I ended up buying at the Hampden Wine Source, which has kept up with the city's changing tastes. I bought my pub grub from the Waverly Farmers' Market and ate with my precious handful of friends at home. That was my Cheers, not the CVP. Too bad, though. Came in tonight when the pub wasn't overly full but got generally rude service and our two sandwiches took an hour 15 minutes to come out. It was exactly 6:15 when the waitress finally came to take our order. We asked for the HH wings and she said that the HH was only until 6:30 "bar time", which was 6:15. The customer service is consistently terrible. If it was bad before COVID-19, it's miserable now. This is a restaurant that is constantly filled with college students so it can get away with a sub-par menu. Strangely, you would thing that would change during a world-wide pandemic when no one is allowed inside and they're entire business depends on take out orders. But, I guess bad service is just bad service and somethings will never change. We recently made the mistake of ordering from them, anyway, because they were one few places open late. They sent us only one of the four items we ordered, which was a Mediterranean app with veggies and spicy feta. It looked like it had been in the walk-in for a week. Furthermore, they refunded the soups without calling to let us know and ask if we wanted something different (they said they were out of them when we called) and did not bring the actual (expensive) meal we ordered at all--nor did they refund it. When we called them, they were EXTREMELY rude. I worked in the service industry through my undergrad and grad degrees and I don't think I have ever even sent food back. But, this was the worst customer service I have ever received. The young woman on the phone was flippant and rude. We asked why they didn't call to let us know they were out of the soup so we could order something else (especially because one of the meals was an app and bowl of soup), and she blamed it on grub hub, explaining that they don't get our phone number and it's grub hug's job to call us. I know that's not true because I order through grub hub regularly and other restaurants call all the time when they are out of items we order . That is common, decent customer service. I told her that, nicely people, I swear...But she hung up. Grub hub could not have been friendlier, actually they paid for our entire refund. So, I guess it's my own fault for ordering from a place I have known since I was an undergrad in 2001-2005...their sense of hospitality is down right horrible and their food isn't much better. read more

It definitely draws a youngish crowd thanks to its proximity to Hopkins but the bartenders are friendly and heavy handed, the fries are delish, and the servers are attentive without being overwhelming. We are regulars here at the Charles Village Pub and it is no exaggeration when I say every time we come, it is amazing. This dive bar is a true diamond in the rough. The waitstaff is fun and remembers you, the food is house made so you don't have to worry about frozen or stale food and the atmosphere is so chill here. We love Desmond (he's the best!) and come at least twice a month. Great spot for sitting down and watching a game. It is a smaller establishment so it can fill up (especially so close to Johns Hopkins University) and there can be longer wait times for food and drinks so not ideal for a fast meal! But as long as you are in the mood to sit down, eat some delicious food, drink some beer and just hang out with the good people here, this is the spot for you! read more

This is my favorite local pub in Baltimore. Very casual, comfortable, and fun atmosphere, with decent beer options and good food. They are welcome and accommodating to groups of all sizes, and have plenty of tvs to watch whatever games are on at the time. My favorite dish at CVP is the chicken crunches sliders, and any of the potato skins are worth the calories you're taking in. It's a great place for a quick drink after work, or to spend a few hours watching a game and hanging out with friends. read more

Happy hour has changed! No more half-price munchies at happy hour or Monday nights. Everything on the menu has increased by $2. Happy hour wings used to be 12 for $4.50, now are 10 for $7. That's an 87$ markup per wing. Seriously, 70 cents per wing is not a deal. You can get that anywhere. And the rest of the prices are now priced where you'd expect something better than the average or worse bar food. Still a great neighborhood bar with great bartenders, but it's now just a random-time place for me and no longer a happy hour destination. read more
