I have been in the service industry for a long time and pride myself by treating everyone how I would like to be treated. This did NOT happen at this establishment tonight. I guess because I had a backwards hat on and wanted to watch the Pacers playoff game and asked for 2 waters while my girlfriend was still in the restroom. The server, hosts and manager were all rude for no reason at all. This is by far the most uncomfortable I have ever felt at a so called restaurant. I was disappointed in our dining a Charleston's Indianapolis. I had the BBQ ribs and they were not done. My sister had a steak and ordered it medium-well. It was mooing when she got it. The waiter acted like he didn't want to wait on us. We were with a group and i understand that the waiter should get a higher tip but I should be allow to determine it not the restaurant since they don't know the waiter's attitude at that time. You ever been to one of those places that you really like but, for whatever reason, it never stays top of mind? I mean, one of those places where, when you get there, you wonder why you don't visit more often. It's a clean place with a nice flow, good lighting for whatever setting you're looking for. Date time. Family time. Church outing... You can't miss. The menu has plenty to choose from. I suggest you try the catfish. Don't forget to ask about the specials. I've come across some really interesting dishes that way... The wait staff is usually more than friendly and willing to direct you should your indecisive belly land you in a pinch. I'm a huge fan of the potato soup and if sides are your thing, I suggest you try the glazed carrots. Just drop in. You won't regret it. On the way out, be sure to grab some of their bread pudding... Visiting Indy for work and ended up here after my first choice was closed. And really glad I did as the service was fantastic (Emily was my server) and the food was top shelf amazing. Had one of the best French Dip Sandwiches ever with Garlic Mashed Potatoes that left me wanting to be hungry all over again just to get more. Topping it off with a WeeMac (always going for local brews!) made the night perfect. I will certainly return the next time I am in Indy with high recommendations to everyone who visits to go try it out. If I could give more Stars I would! I live in Arizona and when I come to Indianapolis to take care of my 88 year old mother, I always take her to Charleston's because we like the food and the atmosphere. Today was a horrible experience. A grandmother was seated in a booth next to us with her four young grandchildren. The three boys were very well behaved. She had a very young child (15 months?). The child was in a high chair and this child screamed every 5 secs. It was ear piercing. The staff did not try to do anything nor did they come to our table and ask us if we would like to move to another table. Actually, our waiter was very non attentive--did not ask if we would like our drinks refilled throughout the course of our meal and did not come to the table until after we had finished eating. I did speak with the manager when we were leaving and voiced my displeasure. I most likely will not be returning anytime soon. read more

We went to the Charleston's in Carmel in Greyhound Plaza. This was a terrible experience. We've been here before for my birthday last year. Food was great service was great so we returned this year. We ordered our food, we got the appetizer queso dip. Well I took a bite and pulled a long black hair out of my mouth. We proceeded to asked for the manager. He came and he didn't apologize but then tells me it was MY HAIR! I couldn't believe this poor customer service we were receiving. We told him look we don't want anything off our bill but to let you know. He then says there is no one working in the back with long hair and walked away. Our waitress was apologetic. That was it. My most recent visit will be my last. We made reservations by telephone earlier in the day. When we arrived, we advised the hostesses of our name and our reservation. After some fumbling, they were unable to locate our reservation in the computer. Enter whom I assume was a manager, given his attire. One of the hostesses explained the situation, and the manager immediately looked at us and snapped "You probably called the wrong location." I noted I found his tone and accusatory statement very rude, to which the manager replied in a horribly unprofessional tone, "It happens all the time." Then, we stood there for a moment while nothing happened. So, my husband looked through his phone's call history and sure enough, he DID call the correct location. After we proved to the manager that my husband did actually call the correct location and even showed the length of the call, the manager mumbled something under his breath while he grabbed menus. He barked, "Follow me," and we proceeded to our table. However, we couldn't keep up with his near-jogging pace, so once he got to the table, he had to wait for us to catch up. Before we were even able to get into our seats, he plopped the menus on the table and ran off. No apologies for their error, no "so and so will be your server", no "enjoy your dinner"...nothing. Then, after finding out they no longer had a turkey burger (even though it was still on the menu and they had stopped serving it weeks ago), we completed our order. My son ordered a kid's cheeseburger meal. It's what he always orders, without fail. When we received our food, he was given a grilled cheese instead of a cheeseburger. We notified our waiter, but at this point we just wanted to eat and get the heck out of there, so we declined his offer to re-make our son's food. The waiter blamed the kitchen and quickly left. (My husband worked at a Charleston's while he was in college; he knows how the kitchen works. It simply could not have been the kitchen's error.) So we are finished with these guys, unfortunately, and we will let our friends and family know of these issues, as well. read more

I rarely give a 5 star. I went on a Monday evening for a business dinner with people from out of town that were staying nearby. I had the pork chops, they were the best in the city, no kidding! Cooked perfectly (not over cooked) garlic mashed and mixed veg. I was not really looking forward to the meal, I thought it was just another chain, but it's not. If you like home cooking and a dimly lit ambiance, then look no further. I've been to Charleston's about 3 times in the last 6 years and I'm always amazed that this place is still in business. The food is good, the service is good, but I always feel like I'm walking into a cave, the music is strange, and unless you've come for the senior special you'll probably feel out of place. I'm going to have to give credit to the hotel next door (I think Holiday Inn?) for keeping this place running. The dining room usually clears out by 8pm, but the bar maintains a decent crowd. On my last visit I had the chicken piccata, which was nicely accompanied by mixed vegetables (which were bland and over cooked) and a side of pasta. The chicken and the fact that they added capers and asparagus as a topping saved the dish. My friend had the spinach and chicken waldorf salad. There was an abundance of chicken and it appeared to be freshly roasted. If you're looking for ok home-cooking type food with dark confusing dining experience then this place should do the trick. read more

Yes, Charleston's is a chain restaurant, but I have to say I'm a fan and have been for a long time. 10+ years ago I had a brief server stint at the Carmel / Westfield location for a few months and it was a good experience. Occasionally its good to see how a proper kitchen runs from the inside out and have some peace of mind that there aren't any "Waiting" shenanigans happening in the back. :) The menu selection here is pretty diverse - you can get some outstanding salads, fresh fish (grilled, blackened) and vegetable medleys, a filet and baked potato or chicken fingers and fries. Honestly, I've never had anything here I didn't like. The food is of very good quality, its prepared well and the service is usually on it. If you want to stick to the basics for a quick work lunch, get the soup and salad. It's $10 so not cheap, but it will fill you up and the baked potato soup alone is worth the money - it's the best! Chunky, thick and rich and topped off with just the right amount of cheese, bacon and scallions...Yummmmm! Chicken finger lovers, you are in luck! The fingers here aren't the flat, compressed, burnt ones - you'll get a huge platter of beautifully voluptuous fingers, all white meat, lightly battered and golden brown - incredibly tender and juicy inside! Pair those and the fries with a side of honey mustard and you are in heaven! And if you can eat it all, I'll be surprised. I haven't had a filet here in a while, but I do know the last time I had one I was impressed. It had great flavor and was done perfectly. The atmosphere here is nice. It has the dimly lit dining room with sconces going on - you'll be comfortable going here in church / business clothes or in jeans and a nice shirt. It's not pretentious - its just a lot more upscale experience than you will get at Chili's or Applebees. They do have a kids menu and have always considered themselves kid-friendly. One tip - order the "Perfect Margarita" from the bar. It's the best margarita I've personally ever had - comes in a martini glass with a couple of speared olives. They'll pour it for you and leave the shaker behind, which ensures you get at least 2 full drinks from your one order (just be sure to have your driver handy, they typically are good and stiff!) read more

The portion size was very disappointing. I ordered the catfish and the two pieces were about the same size as three Van de Camps frozen fish sticks and tasted about as good. The slaw and baked beans were very good, but again the portion size left me hungry and wanting more. What really got them the low score is that I got very ill after eating there. I ate there at 6:30 in the evening and woke-up in my hotel room at 11:30pm puking my guts out. I didn't eat anything else prior to bed so I'm sorry Charlestons you get the blame. read more

This place has been here a while and I last visited years ago. It was very busy for lunch and we were served by a fantastic server, Alisha. I can't say enough about her cheerful and friendly attitude. We were a table of six and wanted separate checks. No problem! I had the Kale Salad, ($14) with the chicken to take home to my wife. It was huge and delicious. I want the dressing recipe. Others in my party seemed happy with their food and the large portions. Especially the french fries. As to the decor: It was dark, so it was difficult to see the details. Given that, it was pleasant and had what I think were real gas lamps on the walls. Restrooms were clean. Absolutely delightful experience with the added bonus of 5% cash back through Yelp! Everything we ordered was outstanding and Tina's service was top notch. The experience started with immediate seating and Tina skillfully walked us through the specials of the day. I opted for the Walleye lightly blackened served over a bed of rice with broccoli. The Walleye was perfectly seasoned and the flaky texture was completely worth the $29 asking price. My wife opted for the Chicken Marsala, largely due to Tina's recommendation. She loved it! My 3 year old devoured his kids meal ribs. Charleston's knows how to treat kids by giving them Wikki Stix to play with. He played quietly throughout the entire meal. My in-laws ordered the catfish platter and the chicken enchiladas and both were very satisfied. I have driven by this place dozens of times to go to other restaurants but now I have a reason to stop. A month or so ago, my family decided to visit Charlestons after hearing much about them. We were a party of 5, but our wait was only about 10 minutes. The decor is warm with lots of dark wood. Our server promptly took drink orders and gave us recommendations for entrées. I ordered the catfish which was served hot, but was it wasn't crispy. Other food ordered was a cheeseburger, soup, chicken fingers, more catfish and everyone had salads which were very good. Their warm crossaints were delicious. Charleston's is our favorite restaurant in the area. The staff is friendly and helpful, and always greets us with a smile. Curtis is our favorite manager. He is kind, polite, and always attentive if we have any questions or concerns. The waitstaff are great. Our drinks are always full and our food is hot, fresh, and delicious. Some of our favorite foods are the "to die for" baked potato soup, the sweet cooked carrots, the pork chops, and the ribs. Don't forget dessert! The key lime pie has just the right tartness with lots of whipped cream. The apple walnut cobbler is also yummy, but arrive early to be guaranteed a serving. Be prepared to ask for a takeaway box if you're not a big eater. They do not skimp on portion size. The prices are very reasonable to me, especially since I always have food leftover. I absolutely love this spot because for one..it's super convenient to where I work and two..it has AMAZING sandwiches. I usually sit at the massive bar with lots of elbow room, well seasoned bartenders, real cloth napkins and order a french dip sub, fresh fish sandwich, or a delic salmon salad with fresh made croissant that has a little drizzle of some homeade honey goo. I have occasionally been here for dinner (convenience) and it's pretty descent for that as well. The older folks seem to REALLY love this place. read more

We had a wonderful meal at Charleston's today. Both the food and service were great. Our server, Latasha, was friendly, very attentive, and proactive. My chicken picatta with its artichokes, peppers, asparagus and lemon sauce served on angel hair was very tasty. My husband started with the chicken noodle mushroom soup. It could have been a bit warmer, but it could not have been tastier. Unlike many creamed soups that you can barely taste ingredients, this soup had loads of chicken flavor and plenty of mushrooms. He followed that with a house salad which was generous in size and ingredients, but the really great thing about it was the blue cheese dressing. We had a container of extra dressing on the side which I sampled. Oh, WOW!. Charleston's should pair this stuff with some sort of crunchy munchy and serve it as an appetizer. It sports chunks of blue cheese and fresh onion in a brightly flavored creamy base. Should I be embarrassed to admit that I brought a container home with me and I can't guarantee it will ever touch lettuce? I may eat it with a spoon. I suppose I should acknowledge the giant slab of prime rib in the perfect medium rare state the hubby adores. As far as restaurant experiences go, this is the best one we have had in a long time. Me and my wife stayed down in Indianapolis for three days for my daughter's volleyball tournaments. We tried to eat out at local places that we don't have back in Chicago. We found Charleston restaurant which was a hidden gem. What grabbed our attention on the yelp review was that they specialize in grilling with Wood. We started with a cheese and artichoke dip with chips which was good. I had the ribeye steak with garlic mashed potatoes which was great. It was cooked to perfection and had A nice smokey flavor to it. My wife had the garlic shrimp pasta which also tasted very good and had a nice light sauce. The service was very exceptional. Our waitress came by numerous times to ask us if we need anything else. I would definitely go again if I'm ever down in the Indianapolis. read more

I have been here a couple of times now. Each time the food has been really tasty. I have had Walt's Champagne salad and it was amazing. I know it is just a salad, but everything tasted and looked great. Now wilted greens on my plate. This time I got a chicken avocado club with french fries. I love love shoestring french fries and they have them here. My kids stole them off my plate and I tried to eat them quicker so I didn't have to share. This of course did not work for me. They just took bigger handfuls. The sandwich was great too. The chicken was tender and the avocado, sproys, bacon, honey mustard, and tomatoes all tasted great on my toasted bread. Even my 7 year old liked the sandwich and she is pretty picky. The kids menu was pretty basic. Both of the girls got fruit, cheese, and yogurt plates. I was kind of underwhelmed by their meals. It was some sad grapes, strawberries, a little ramekin of yogurt, and 2 steing cheesesticks. They liked it, but they complained about the grapes being squishy and had to pick through them. However their meals came with a cookie and ice cream sundae. so they forgot all about their sad little grapes. The service was good and we will be back qhen we are in the area. read more

I've only been once, not sure I'll be back. I ordered a chicken BLT and potato soup. The potato soup was the best I ever had. My BLT would've been better had my chicken been cooked throughly. It was still very pink inside. I actually removed it and ate just the top potion of my sandwich. I took the chicken home to cook and put over a salad. Was quite tasty after fully cooked. The waitress saw that I had basically disassembled my sandwich and didn't ask one question. I didn't bother her either being the fact it was a struggle just to get ice water. Although the soup alone makes me want to return, the service and undercooked chicken will keep me from doing so. Too bad read more
