We revisited Charlotte's last week. We 've not been there for a few years, but every time we went , we really enjoyed ourselves...this time was very disappointing...The climate of the dining area is still very nice and I loved the soft music and singer that sang sentimental favorites. But the food was a problem. The dinner was not very good. I had a crab imperial and the crab was only tasteful on the very top of the dish..the rest was thick , breaded filler with a taste trying to be "crab" , the baked potato accompanying it, was totally black on the outside ...and I was unwilling to venture inward. My husband did. and it was thick and clumpy and dry. His "penne pasta with salmon " the sauce was thick and like glue. I don't know who the owner of this restaurant is now. but the quality of food has dropped off a cliff !! read more

Charlotte's is one of those old-timey jems that has the older themed decor, but the food is OMG delicious. They have three great and verrrrrrrrrry delicious deals. The first is their early bird menu that for about $20, gets you a cup of scratch made soup or salad, entree and scratch made dessert. For those that eat a little later, there's the Customer Appreciation Menu that offers your four courses for $24 or less. You cannot go wrong with their infamous crab cakes for either deal. They're made in a very unique way and are absolutely fantastic. You'd think you were at the shore ordering these crab cakes, but you're right at home in Broomall. The best deal is the All You Can Eat Snow Crab Legs Special only featured on Tuesdays. You get a HUGE appetizer of steamed mussels in marinara, potatoes, corn on the cob and all you can eat Snow Crab Legs. The mussels are amazing and the snow crab legs just keep on coming. If you're not ready for a new cluster of crab legs, (most) waitresses will wait until you're ready to bring you out a fresh cluster. read more

They call it Delaware County's best kept secret... which I can totally see. I came here with my large Italian family after a funeral, so we took up the entire back room which I believe they called the Peacock room. (I could be making that up, but I remember seeing a sign...) anyway that's not very important. The servers were all very nice and always willing to get us anything we needed. We had a banquet style menu. Started off with the escarole soup... aka Italian Wedding Soup. Yum. The tiny meatballs were good. Then we went on to the salad. And salad is just salad. Nothing special there. For the entree I had the crab cakes. Not the best crab cakes I had, but the sauce they use was very good. I think the problem was they had too much breading. The sides were delicious. The almond string beans were so good. Probably because they are cooked in butter. Speaking of butter, our table polished off 3 baskets of bread. Yay carbs! For dessert, and this confused much of my family, my uncle chose rice pudding. I never had rice pudding before, but I tried it. It was creamy... and the cinnamon made it better. My one uncle at my table said he hated the cinnamon. I thought I didn't have enough! So I guess to each his own on that one. I think under the circumstances of the day (it was a funeral but also my birthday) it was a nice place to go for a big group of people. I don't see coming back here unless we were in the area again. The decor is a bit outdated, but that's the worst I can say about Charlotte's. This is a great choice for a group dinner. I came here for a family dinner and we had a small room to ourselves with an excellent wait staff. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The meal starts with bread, with your choice of butter or oil. The bread with oil is the best combination. We could have filled up on that it was so good. For appetizers I was able to try the wings, crab balls, and bang bang shrimp. All were tasty choices that my family devoured quickly. My entree was the Charlotte's crab cakes with whipped potatoes. The crab cakes were delicious. Possibly the best I've ever eaten. The crab meat is mixed with shrimp and scallop mousse. Although I didn't taste the fried shrimp, they were true jumbo shrimp that the people who ordered them seemed to enjoy. I wasn't expecting much when I went to Charlotte's, since suburban restaurants so rarely match the quality of those in the city. But I left very pleasantly surprised! read more

Quirky, but seriously the best seafood I've ever eaten on the East Coast. The cod I had here was huge, but fresh, flaky, and perfectly cooked. The scallops that came with it were also perfect - sweet and tender. Even the sauce was perfect - flavorful without overpowering the delicious seafood. I liked just about everything at the restaurant. We were seated and served quickly even though it was a busy Friday evening, and the waitress was polite and attentive without being intrusive. Not surprisingly, I came to Charlotte's for an 80th birthday party. The restaurant has an ambiance that seems to cater to the... mature. It seems to be located in what used to be an old house, complete with a drawing room to wait for your table. There are magazines on the table, and it oddly reminded me of a waiting room at the doctor's. The menu itself is very seafood-heavy, so if you're looking for a nice crab cake dinner then this might be the place for you. I ordered the only vegetarian option, which was a spinach and cheese ravioli. The ravioli was good, but nothing earth-shattering. It came with a salad, and they did carry raspberry vinaigrette (which many restaurants don't carry any more). Seriously, what is that about?? It's the best dressing! The staff seemed somewhat disorganized. They came to get our drink orders twice, didn't know each other's names when they went to introduce the other waiter, and made a lot of jokes that made them seem nervous, like they were trying to break the ice.... even as we were getting dessert and coffee. They did a nice job with the cake, bringing it out lit so that we could sing Happy Birthday, and then slicing it up for each person at the table. Then, they made a joke about shots of Jack that fell really flat. Maybe I just wasn't the target age group, but I'd probably pick something else if I were going out with a bunch of friends from my own age group. read more

Outstanding dinner with out-of-town visitors. We had a full table of nine, so it was a bunch. Yet the waitstaff did everything to make our dinner a memorable one. From the appetizers to the broiled mixed seafood platter I had that could have fed a platoon of Marines, it was succulent. Yes, the decor probably dates to the Eisenhower Administration and seems anachronistic in today's world of Swedish-styled decor and modernistic inclinations. It needs some serious updating... But again, looking at the clientele, it was understandable. Amazingly so, the beers and wines tend do receive seasonal updates and we had some great Stella Artois beer on a seasonally warm day. Other than the outdated decor, the ambience was superb. All in all, a super evening in a great place. I can't even begin to tell you how horrible this place is. I spent the whole time wishing Gordon Ramsey would save this restaurant. Don't be catfished but the appealing exterior! Inside is reminiscent of a decrepit museum and a retirement home. We sat in the front where floor tilted so much our water glasses slid with condensation. Add a sprinkling of ants all over the wall and crawling on the table where we sat, plus the inch high dead termite bodies inside the stained glass window at our table...just no! It was gross. All that aside, we paid $200 with tip for dinner that would pass as hospital food! Instant mashed potatoes aside a filet mignon (raw) but ordered medium. Side crab cake was canned crab, fishy and filler was horrible. Stale side of bread with rancid dipping oil. Service was slow and took until check came to get drinks ordered at appetizers. Honestly, I don't write reviews often but I am giving all fair warning....this place was the worst and I will never go back and will warn everyone I cross paths with. Yes, it was that bad! read more

So our family of 14 (including small children) came to this restaurant on a Mother's Day reservation and encountered multiple problems. First being my aunt was served a salad with paper they use to take down orders and she had bitten into it without realizing. She informed one of the waitress serving our table and she just laughed it off - you would think she would've sent a manager over to talk to our table but 20 minutes later and we had not received any sort of consolidation. We then asked to speak with management, and she came over with an apology and offered us one free dessert. Our table alone spent 400$+, but we were offered a 4$ dessert for biting into a piece of paper? The manager also told us they "checked the rest of the salads being served to make sure no one else received paper." That's fine and all, but the damage is already done to our table. Next up, my two month old was sitting in his car seat on the floor and not in the way of anyone - Had been the entire visit. We had multiple waiters visit our table and he had not been in anyone's way. One particular waiter tripped over him, and instead of apologizing he told someone else at my table "it's a good thing he's awake" when he was in fact, sleeping. And if that's not enough, two of our children had ordered from the kid's menu which offered a dessert at the end. Our visit was roughly 40 minutes and had we not said anything, neither kid would've received their deserts. I also feel if you're going to specifically cater to Mother's Day, you should have changing tables in your bathrooms for the mothers that attend your restaurant with their small children. Charlottes is a go to place for us - always good quality food! Their specials are a great deal and good for groups! We hadn't been there since COVID hit and returned this past week. They have a small outdoor patio, with three tables with umbrellas, which they installed and it will be a great addition. We went on a hot day so it was warm sitting outside but we enjoyed the meal and enjoyed being able to go out. Definitely try this gem in Newtown Square! Beware if you need handicap accessibility. The only accessible door is in the front, but parking is in the back. You have to walk all the way from the back up a hill to get to the front door. It was way too much, so went in the back door and tried the steps. Took a while, and when at the top step, the handrail stopped short. Almost couldn't do the last step. It was scary. Then used the restroom, and the toilet was VERY low to the ground. Not an accessible height. Food was good but can't go there again. read more

I wanted to give Charlotte's 3.5 stars, but Yelp doesn't allow that. I enjoyed the decor. It is rustic American with a splash of Russian crystal. The small rooms make it both quiet and cozy. Great atmosphere for a date. The service was good, and our waitress was friendly. Things broke down a little with the actual fare. But first the high points. The bread was very light and served with a delicious roast vegetable spread, and the brussel sprouts were amazing, even if they were fried a bit more than I would have done. The crab cakes, however, were disappointing. Too much breading and filler diluted the crab flavor and made them too big to finish. Wine lovers won't be pleased, either. The wine list is limited, though well priced, and my chardonnay was ice cold and served in a chilled glass. I was able to get the second glass unchilled, but the wine itself was still frigid. Despite its shortcomings, I would try Charlotte's again if I have reason to dine in Newtown Square, but I will stay away from the crabcakes and temper my expectations for the wine. read more

My family and I have enjoyed dining at Charlotte's for over 30 years. However, our latest experience with Charlotte's may be our last. Last Saturday, I had dinner reservations for 8. We had a change of plans and I forgot to cancel the reservation. That night when the owner called to find out where we were, I was deeply embarrassed and tried to apologize for forgetting to cancel. I love this place. This is a go to for me and my wife even though we are in our early 40s and it caters to an older crowd with the Victorian setting. My wife almost always gets the stuffed shrimp and I usually ask the chef to make me a seafood carbonara. He comes out sometimes and he's genuinely interested and says he loves making that dish which he happens to be very good at. The chicken Parm is also phenomenal. They post their famous Moose crab cakes but I'm not such a big fan. Everything else we have had is absolutely delicious. My 13-year-old son even thinks it's the best grilled cheese and french fries around :-) read more

Charlottes is so consistently good that there is too much to write. Our server Jody has to be one of the hardest working waiters and always aims to please his customers. The clientele may seem older, but the food never disappoints! The baked clams served with real bacon and seasonings are so tasty that this is a must on every visit. The fried Bronzino Fish is my favorite and always crispy and cooked to perfection. They have a small bar that has a great happy hour and the restaurant has plenty of places to sit, so it is not likely that you would have to wait to be seated. My husband and I had dinner here on Feb. 15 for a combination Valentines and anniversary dinner. We had my favorite waitress, Nora and as usual she was friendly, helpful and a sweet lady. Had a 40th Anniversary surprise dinner for two dear friends/family last night. This was a positive experience all the way around. My experience with the staff was great, they fulfilled every request I had. Even though I dealt with 3 different people, there was no confusion, which can sometimes happen. The food was delicious, from the fruit and cheese platter, escarole soup, salad, salmon, fillet and chicken piccante. Dessert was delicious too. Everyone enjoyed their meal and left satisfied. The service was fantastic, we greatly appreciate that. We had a great time, all 21 of us. I feel like they cared about our experience. Walking into Charlotte's Restaurant produced in me a profound feeling of nostalgia. The smell of mothballs and old people, the dense floral fabric wallpaper and the servers clad in black tuxedo vests and bow ties brought me back to lunch after my 8th grade graduation, or a funeral banquet in the Crystal Room. What Charlotte's has now that they never did before it All-You-Can-Eat Crab Night on Monday. For $25 bucks, they throw down salad, your choice of starch, and as many Dungeness or Snow crabs as you can cram down your gullet. The service on Crab Night is so efficient and friendly it borders on fawning. The servers are used to pouring half-cups of decaf for old ladies who always say the coffee is not fresh, and are thrilled to wait on anyone with a pulse and sense of humor. Hit it up. I haven't eaten here recently off the a la carte menu, but the piles of Dungeness crabs I ate on Monday were absolutely worth a return visit. read more

I was debating giving Charlotte's 5 stars, but I just can't justify 4! Everything about our experiences here has been positive. The restaurant itself is charming, old fashioned and clean. All of the staff, including the dining room manager, Jim, has been more than kind to us. Our waiter the last time we went, JR, was a treat - bringing us anything we needed, consistently there to fill our water glasses, offering extras along the way, as well as chatting with us and cracking jokes late into the evening. I felt bad that we were his very last table left at 9:45, but he didn't seem to mind one bit. My boyfriend and I had come here once before for crab legs (they have snow crab and dungeness), and had vowed to come back for their Monday all-you-can-eat crab night. It lived up to all the glory we'd imagined! The plates we started with had at least 3-4 huge clusters of crab legs, and they were prepared expertly, steamed to perfection, served with melted butter and steak fries (which I believe can be substituted). Boyfriend got 2 more big clusters before he threw in the towel. Before we even got our crab legs, we were served some incredible warm, crusty bread, olive oil and ratatouille, and we each got a salad that came with our meal. The house Greek dressing was superb! They seem to also have a great wine selection, though, I just went with the house Cabernet, which was great for me. I'd love to try a bottle there sometime, there were lots of great ones. Everything about our dinners here have been fabulous, and even though the crowd's a bit on the older side, I'd encourage young people looking for yummy crab legs to come on out. The two all-you-can-eat platters came to less than $30 each, and they had no issues with us lingering over our drinks. I don't think they are open too much past 10PM, so it's more of a dinner time place, than a late night hub, but if that doesn't bother you, check it out! read more

When I first walked through the door at Charlotte's, I thought I'd been transported to 1975. Okay, now that we got my snark out of the way, let me tell you about this traditional prime rib and seafood classic crouched along West Chester Pike. Honestly, its just not my kind of place but I could not bring myself to give any less than 3 stars. Here's why. First, the people were so NICE. The host/owner, our waitress, even our busperson were busting hump to make sure we were pleasantly greeted, promptly seated and properly feeded. The fella tinkling the ivories behind a piano draped in an American flag smiled at us a few times as he rolled through is set list every 10-15 minutes. The service was fast. My gosh the place was really CLEAN - every pane of frosted glass, polished brass, chandelier and mirror clear. The chairs, tables, silverware, wood trim - all clean enough to show that the people who work and run this place care about the little things. I had a crisp martini, nostalgic house salad with homemade blue cheese, garbanzo, hearts of palm, cucumber, cheesy croutons. The missus and I both had prime rib on the bone, nicely cooked and of ample portion, awash in a shallow pool of beefy au jus. Baked potato, sour cream, c'mon. The seafood flying around me looked pretty good, especially the crab cakes and fried combo. I half regretted getting the Rib, but it just felt right. Prices were exactly what you would expect. My straw was printed with the name and phone number of a local auto dealer, an odd touch that somehow did not seem that odd. The ceilings were low, lighting just right. The room was decorated with Mylar Heart balloons, evidence that yesterday was Valentines. We sat amongst mostly couples, mostly older, mostly just enjoying one another's company as they cooed over their shrimp lejon and crab imperial and maybe saw each other as they were 30 years ago, when the world was simpler, they were little younger, and Charlotte's was, I'll wager, very much the same. As we left, I thought for a moment I saw Sammy Davis Jr and Deano pulling up to the bar. read more

I met a friend of mine for lunch at Charlotte's Restaurant. Funny thing is that I had never been to this restaurant event though I probably had passed it about a hundred times over my lifetime. Charlotte's touts itself as having "victorian elegance". Once you step foot inside, you'll understand why. The history of "Charlotte" is evident all over the restaurant. Apparently, Charlotte was a former restaurateur and the mother of the owner and as such, appropriately named. The decor in the restaurant is a bit dated but it does house the private collection of Charlotte's crystal and her paintings. The service was very friendly and attentive and the menu selection was very expansive. We ate there on St. Patrick's Day so the most popular item that day was the ham and cabbage (yikes). The prices were very affordable and you get big portions for the price. I'd like to go back and try the dinner menu and especially try the "all you can eat " crabs on Monday nights for $19.95. They also have a banquet room for smaller parties and ample parking. I would recommend this for a quick lunch spot but until I am able to test the dinner waters, I would hold off for now. read more

The 8oz $38.00 Lobster tail was dry and if it wasn't for the drawn butter; no taste at all My wife ordered prime rib and it was served like a pot roast. Thought they had the wrong order.....If she wanted stew.....it would have been a great looking stew. . My wife had Shrimp Cocktail.....a cup of beautiful shrimp....no taste at all. The vegtables (green beans and potatoes) Green beans....just green beans no taste no secret ingredients ...just green beans.....the potatoes....just plain old potatoes. Bread...plain old bread. Appetizer was stuffed mushrooms....lot's of crab but no taste at all either in the crabs or mushrooms. Wasn't my taste buds because there were 4 of us at the table and we all ordered them. We didn't know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised. The fish and crab cakes were excellent, the service was superb, and everyone in the restaurant was friendly and anxious to please. I went here for Valentine's Day dinner earlier in the evening. I was slightly upset that an item I hoped for (garlic mussels) wasn't on their restricted menu for the evening but the marinara mussels were good. The sauce detracts from the mussels and I've never had a red sauce be better then white, which held true that evening. The beer selection here is surprisingly good. The tap selection is small but they have Yuengling Black & Tan which I've never seen on tap. They also have Chimay Blue with Chimay glasses as well! My waiter that evening definitely did not know much about beer though. I poured it properly leaving the yeast in the bottle and shortly after he came around and poured it into my beer. Thanks. It was also served ice cold in a frozen glass. My main course was one of their Charlotte's Famous Crab Cakes. It's famous, why wouldn't I try it? Their description is very accurate but it isn't like most crab cakes you have likely had and wasn't to my liking. The chicken parm was much better and quite large. There were quite a few teens working that evening. The older employees may have just had off. The service was good other then the yeast incident but not great enough to say much else. Charlotte's is supposedly known for their seafood so it's definitely a place to try, I recommend the mussel, but I always do. read more

Your waiter: A bit strange, and not willing to man-up to mistakes, keep a close eye on him. Atmosphere: Intimate, good date place. Value: Worth every penny, plenty of quality food for the buck.
