You can't go wrong with the City Market. The vendors here are great. You can grab breakfast, lunch, coffee, local arts and crafts. It's also close to the downtown mall, so there are plenty of places to walk to once you're done here. Highly recommend visiting if you haven't before.

Parking was definitely a bitch as we circled endlessly to find a good spot not that it matter just wanted a space to see the market. Luckily we got a metered spot for an hour as the market was nearing its end. Ate some lovely crab cake sandwiches got two they were so good and tasty. Then we got one of the last remaining dumpling soups to go and slurped it down as we walked the up and down the remaining tents to what the vendors had for sale. Would suggest coming here early as possible to get the full experience.

I have been going to this farmers market almost every week since I moved to Charlottesville and am loving it more and more. Lots of seasonal produce, meats and baked goods just to name a few. They have soaps, honey, jams, pickled veggies, tea blends, cold brews and so much more. Make sure to check out Sussex Farm and their delicious Korean food (kimchi is to die for) or the Pie Guy's decadent meat pies. Most stands accept cards, but you should bring cash just in case as there were quite a few that were cash only. If you enjoy supporting local businesses and don't hate the environment you should definitely check this place out!

Traveling to a new city? One way my wife and I look into the heart (food scene) of the city is by going to their local farmers market. We were lucky enough to be in Charlottesville during a weekend and were able to hit it up. The market itself is located centrally, near the middle of all the 'action'. It is set up in a slightly hilly area, so it is a little tough for people with wheelchairs or disabilites....but definitely walk-able...not a very large farmers market, but definitely action packed! This particular market was a nice mix of vendors. For sure not produce heavy....there were a lot of prepared food vendors (how I like it)! We missed a cool event (the following week)...it was meet the farmer week. You can talk to the purveyor you are buying from, ask questions and learn how they produce their product....cool! I checked out the reviews on yelp before hand so I knew we should go early. There was plenty of parking on side streets when we arrived, and there was a steady stream of locals carrying their reusable bags to bring back their haul. When we left it was packed in a major way.... We were able to try a few things.... Aussie pie (beef tenderloin) It was good, not mind blowing though. The guy is pretty smart though....he sits out in front of the bars on the weekend nights... Tacos Good stuff. The Al Pastor was good....a little sweetness brought out the flavor of the salsa and cheese. My wife had a plain carne asada taco and it was good as well. Mashed potato and cheese perogies Just ok..I wouldn't get it again. I don't remember the price, but it was expensive and you only got two of them. They were under seasoned and didn't have a lot of flavor. Croissant My wife killed the croissant, and she said it was good....sheesh! Bacon There was a man making breakfast using homemade bacon....we just ordered the strips of bacon....very yummy! Raspberry doughnut Probably the second best thing I put in my mouth....this 'Hot Doughnut' stall was cranking out 'hand dressed' donuts to the ever present line. I paid a little extra for the raspberry glazed doughnut and it was Amazing!!! There is something about a just fried doughnut that makes me thank the heavens.... Pork dumplings My favorite were the pan fried dumplings....yes, I know what your thinking. Dumplings at a farmers market in Virginia? Don't think....just eat. Good food is good food people!....it doesn't matter where you are. They were crispy, soft, chewy and hot all at the same time. The sauce that was put on at the end was absolutely perfect. I almost went back for more, but we were on our way to a restaurant.... I would definitely go back here for more...there was a lot we didn't get to try....super fun!

I wish every Farmer's Market was like the Charlottesville City Market. Tons of vendors to stop by and chat with and every week brings new vendors. Full of things you would normally expect from a farmer's market such as fresh produce and good eats, as well as beautiful seasonal flowers and locally made items and gifts such as kids' clothes, candles, and jewelry. There are delicious places to grab a bite to eat (read: Bagelini and Moon Maidens) before strolling through the lanes of vendors, or you can pop a squat in one of the designated eating areas. Make sure you shop around before committing to produce - although all are great and local, some places will sell for a little cheaper than others, especially things you can find at several (if not all) produce vendors such as cucumbers and tomatoes. Get there early! It gets really crowded around 1030-11a and although not impossible, it gets a little difficult navigating the crowds without bumping into other shoppers (and in turn apologizing two million times). Also, don't forget to bring your own shopping bags, produce bags, utensils and straws!

Awesome outside space with plenty on restaurant options and shops. They even have lots of outside vendors. Cool spot to walk around and eat outside. Most of the restaurants have outdoor eating spaces.

You have to come down and give it a try! Even though it's moved on to the winter market, there are still lots of veggies and apples to buy. The donuts from the "original" donut shop were yummy- just like duck donuts, but smaller. The tacos from the place on the end that presses their own corn tortillas are fabulous. There is a man who sells delicious granola-$8 a bag but worth every penny. There is a place called Pearl Island that probably has the best food of all, and they give out free samples of their flavorful meat and fried plantains if you ask.

I'm so happy I made it to Charlottesville City Market, and I was so impressed with what the market had to offer! While in a smaller space, the market is jam-packed with interesting vendors of really impressive variety. The City Market has everything you might possibly want, from sugar-free tomato sauce to CBD oil, from Korean eats to apple cider donuts to yak meat (you read that right!). I think the variety is what makes this place special. The vendors and market staff were super friendly. As other reviewers have noted, it does get quite crowded during peak hours. I definitely was bumped and did some bumping into people myself! Major highlight of the City Market was getting my hands on an apple cider donut & cold brew from Carpe Donut. I also got some amazing Virginia motif artwork from Lola & Bella Designs (artist: Lauren Stangil) and a miniature watercolor with gold leaf from Little Dreams (artist: Courtney Kincaid). I can't wait to decorate my apartment with these! I wish I had more room in my belly to try the low glycemic bagels, meat pies, crab cakes, Mama Bird's Korean eats, among MUCH MORE! Since I was coming from out of town, I was mostly focused on the grub and art. However, I did notice an amazing selection of produce to purchase. As other reviewers have noted, the City Market also has a composting station. I also appreciated they had recycling bins and signs educating/instructing people where to put their trash/recycling. Warms my heart! Unfortunately, pets are NOT allowed at the City Market, so leave Sargeant Sniffy at home when you stop by. Overall, I loved my experience at Charlottesville City Market and I can't wait to come back next time I'm home!

I'm thrilled to see such a vibrant farmers market in the small town of Charlottesville! The market is quite large and holds dozens of different local farm stands, art and craft stands, and local eateries. You can get anything here from potted herbs to cheeses, but butters, and honeys. The prices are quite variable across farm stands, so be sure to do a lap or two before purchasing. Most stands accept credit card, although I try to use cash whenever possible. The market also offers compost bins for your compost drop-off, which is a huge win!

Pork on a stick and pork egg rolls. Yum!

We came here on a whim after taking the city tour - boy am I glad we did! Amazing food and I was able to score some great soap and baked goods! We started with a Filipino meal of pork egg rolls and pork on a stick. $3 for 10 egg rolls and $2 for the skewer. Delicious!! Then we had some dumplings. 5 curry chicken and 5 shrimp for $8.50. So good. Then my husband wanted a grilled sausage with peppers and onions on local baked bread. Very tasty! We topped it off with some raspberry rose green tea.

Not the largest farmers market I have ever visited but quite possibly the most loveable. Great mix of vendors who seem eager to answer questions, offer suggestions and simply make you feel really welcome. The sense of community is palpable and the degree of pride each takes in their particular proudct, locally roasted coffee to homemade poptarts, is really evident. The vegetables and fresh flowers were beautiful and all of the ready-to-eat or made-to-rder foods looked delicious. If I lived close enough this would be a part of my routine and my preferred place to stock up on produce, eggs, baked goods and sweet treats. Great variety, perfect central location and lots of wonderful, locally sourced foods and crafts to fill your shopping list.

Their marketplace has a wide selection of apple varieties, most of them are ready for sampling. If you're looking for a family‑friendly outing with fresh fruit, friendly faces, and plenty of tasty discoveries, Chiles Peach Orchard is a must‑visit. Notes: This maybe not in their control - lantern flies were everywhere, they don't bite, but they are invasive bugs, be careful not to get hitchhikers. It had some peach flavor, but honestly, nothing out of the ordinary. I was told the peach donuts were just all right, not as standout as others (apple cider donuts). What did stand out was the peach Bellini, which was really good, especially because it was such a hot day. We wanted to check out the peach orchard, but unfortunately, they had sold out for the day, so we weren't allowed to go. It was probably around two or three in the afternoon, so we were surprised they had shut down so early. We did enjoy the views and live music, which was really cool. And this first visit happened to coincide with my first time in Harrisonburg. The morning was cool, but not yet cold and the sun was unbridled by clouds. I could hear the sounds of people and caught the aroma of baked bread before I saw the rows of tables and tents. As fate would so favor me yet again, my first stop was a dog-centric vendor. Homemade treats, bandanas, and outfits. But that day I left with a JMU poop bag holder (have to represent for the family). Vendors ranged from bread to pastries to canned goods to locally grown apples (you know I got a couple of bags of those). At every table I found a friendly face at the helm. They were having a great time being there and so was I. Before it was all said and done I had so much stuff it required me returning to the hotel room and offloading before continuing the morning.
