Hey porridge is a porridge, you eat it when you caught a cold or not feeling well in the stomach. Nothing can substitute for a nice hot porridge on a rainy day either except for a tasty ramen but... This place is in Carrollton, tucked away in the corner around the back side of H mart eatery area. Plenty of porridge styles to choose from, a bit pricey but they give you alot to share. I usually order their vegetarian and the abalone juk because they are the best. Didn't really like the red seafood style because it's just not that tasty. One downside with Abalone juk is that there's not much of Abalone to eat! I guess it's because the abalone is pretty pricey, they can't add too much. It's better to just buy one abalone and make it yourself if you want the true juk that way, but who has time right? so settle for this or don't complain so I won't complain lol I hope they give more of the side dish that comes with the giant juk order, we always run out of those little things. Tip #1: make sure you know when they close, and order ahead of time so you don't have to wait there. I hate waiting for a togo where there's no take out waiting area. read more

One of the sweetest red ginseng tea with pine nut along with special Korean style abalone porridge. Best breakfast meal that only elites in Asia enjoy. She was very attentive and offer to refill all the banchans (free side wishes) that I need plus she gave me a nice Barley Tea which was standard after comforting my stomach with delicious preserved mushroom that were pure delight for this expensive breakfast that comes up to $37 dollars including tip. The weather was getting cold and I thought what a perfect day for a bowl of warm porridge! Had a chance to shop at H-mart on weekend and dropped in for a quick meal before grocery shopping. (you know not to go grocery shopping on empty stomach...) This place was packed with people and I was lucky enough to find a small table at the end. I guess the place gets really busy on weekend... Considering the place being full, my food came out pretty fast. I had beef tendon juk and it was very tasty. We went here for a dinner on a rainy day. What a perfect meal it was. We tried the Kimchi porridge and sweet sesame. The kimchi is excellent and filled with flavor. There is mushroom side dish that came with it that just taste really good. Sweet but not too sweet. The portion is large. We have to split it between the two of us. The sesame was good. Since I don't eat seafood I always order the kimchi beef congee and the quality is consistently nice. I do hope they'll offer a little variety on their banchan, but maybe that's the whole light and fit and healthy theme they have going. Service is very prompt and courteous and the place is very neat and tidy (a rarity for Korean restaurants). If I had to complain about anything, it'd be the price. I mean in the end of the day, no matter how you glorify it, congee is just slow-cooked rice with some flavors add to it. $10 for a bowl of rice and couple pieces of beef and kimchi here and there is just way overpriced for me. This is the Korean equivalent of chicken noodle soup. It is the ultimate comfort food. If I am too ill to go into Charm Juk, I'll just call ahead and order it to-go. There is nothing tastier than some rice porridge with a side of kimchi and a splash of soy sauce that cures the common cold. Charm Juk doesn't make this magical bowl of comfort exactly like my momma does but it's pretty damn close. It's tasty and warms my tummy right up. Plus it is literally the ONLY thing I can stomach when I'm sick. Maybe it's a Korean thing. If you've never tried juk before, I don't recommend getting a plain and simple dish. Juk by itself can be pretty tasteless if it isn't mixed in with something (unless you're pouring in soy sauce). Charm Juk doesn't provide a whole lot of side dishes (banchan) because traditionally, you don't. For those who like some spice, try the kimchi juk. For those who are hankering for some meat and a kick of ginger, try the chicken and ginger juk (samgae). Even though I've glorified juk as comfort food, it's good any day of the week, sick or not. Charm Juk has a large variety of juks to choose from so your tastebuds can have a field day. But I'm a creature of habit so I'll stick to chicken and ginger juk. read more

charm juk is easily my favorite dining experience in the burgeoning little k-town sprawl of carrollton; and that's after years of trawling through every restaurant that has opened in the plaza. i go to omi for carnivorous group gatherings, abe when i want to stare at really good-looking waiters, and ajumma's kimbap deli when i want to spend $2 on lunch- but i always return to charm juk when i want an unfailingly delicious, consistent bowl of food. it's comfort food, sure. ideal for when you're ill, cold, or hungover. but this isn't some dickensian porridge (thin, watery, doled out to orphaned street rats). it's also not my mom's zhou that i remember from childhood (painfully bland, better used as a vehicle for brown sugar). this is some high-level shit. if all the regional rice porridges of asia lined up for benchmark testing, this juk would earn the top score and graduate early and finish some ivy league md/phd program in 2 years. it boasts a litany of health benefits, and these adorable little posters decorating the restaurant space remind me that all the ingredients are high quality products with homeopathic benefits. the rice is organic and unpolished, retaining the wheat germ. there are specialty bowls that will improve your beauty or give you superpowers. stuff about purging toxins. all of these things matter approximate 0% to me, but i get the approach. in a restaurant strip full of fried chicken and charred galbi, it's nice to pretend you're eating health-conscious food once in a while. and i won't lie, this comes at a premium price- the snow crab and abalone juk i always order costs maybe $15. it's worth noting that the bowls are roughly the size of my head and one order is really two meals unless you want to eat until you hate yourself. kimchi, dongchimi, and beosut bokkeum come on the side in small portions and i absolute recommend adding them to your juk for depth of flavor and textural contrast. and this is really a dish that holds up no matter whether you opt to dine in or take out. of course, no review of this restaurant is complete without some mention of the level of service. charm juk is owned by and employs the friendliest, most attentive people. those of you familiar with asian restaurants know that service is really a negligible afterthought, but that's definitely not the case here. the dreamboat that took my order last time accepted my credit card with both hands and a bow like i was passing him the holy grail. the warm professionalism of their service is definitely something the other restaurants in the area could learn from. keep up, h-mart plaza. charm juk is setting the curve. read more

The main dish and the side dishes tasted really fresh and homemade! This is now my favorite place for comfort food, especially when it is cold and rainy! I went here for a coworkers lunch and it was pretty good. The consistency isn't quite like Chinese congee where it's cooked until the rice doesn't resemble rice anymore. The portions are large and I had enough for lunch the next day (it reheats pretty well). The combination seafood that I ordered really didn't have much seafood in it. Really enjoyed this - love the specialty concept of a sort of gourmet Korean rice porridge, although I don't know if it can survive. They have a wide variety of porridges, all using organic rice and very healthy ingredients. The flavors are simple and delicately balanced, and the interior echoes this - a sort of simple, clean modern casual elegance. They have a whole offering of bean-type soups as well. Love, love this place! I had the pumpkin Juk, creamy goodness with what I think were some sort of sweet rice balls and a few beans floating on top. So simple, hot , clean, nutritious and comforting. My husband had the crab Juk which was wonderful. Real snow crab, not much of it but just as delicious either way, it also had some veggies. My husband enjoyed his crab Juk so much he could have had another! I can't wait to come back and try everything else, especially the organic juke dishes, rice bowls... I've always shopped at the H-Mart near by and I must have overlooked this corner restaurant many times. I ate here for lunch with a friend on a weekday. The place was small, but it didn't matter since there were only a few other tables taken. I ordered the Seafood Juk, and it was amazing! I grew up eating Chinese style juk and I was presently surprised by the explosion of flavors. It was spicy, but not too spicy for me, however it was too spicy for my friend. For me, this place is all about quality. I got the double abalone juk, and it was delicious. I am so hungry now thinking about it. I spoke to the manager, and she was concerned where her ingredients come from that she she has visited the farm where her abalone comes from. She has also made it a point to get to-go containers that are BPA ( Bisphenol A - it even sounds bad) free. I'd only had Korean food a few times before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out juk is delicious! You get a massive bowl of porridge (which sounds like something Oliver Twist would eat) and a bunch of flavorful little side dishes that you can mix in depending on your preference. The food is cheap and for most people it's enough that you will be taking a good bit home as well. The service is really friendly, informative and quick to replenish drinks and sides. Pretty good and pretty expensive. I haven't tried Korean porridge before but based on the photos it looked like others I have tried. It tasted a little bland but I like that it wasn't salty and you can salt it to your taste. I wish it had a little more ginseng in it. This soup would be good if you're feeling a little sick. I make my own porridge and prefer mine more like the Chinese version and gingery with a squeeze of lemon. For $20 including a drink and tip, it is quite pricey and I would probably not go out of my way to eat here again. Service was good and friendly.
