Went here for their unlimited paella Sunday brunch and it was such a nice vibe! Luckily it was super sunny that day so the outdoor rooftop bar ambiance was incredible. Great views and they also play really good music! It's the perfect environment to sit for a while and catch up with friends while enjoying warm food and refreshing drinks. It's also super fun watching them cook the paella right on the rooftop. FYI the brunch requires reservations and it's prepaid -- $30 per person but with tax comes to w $40 total. There's also a 2 hour limit per table. The service here is impeccable -- really friendly, hospitable, and attentive. The paella isn't anything to write home about and gets quite filling very fast, but it is truly unlimited and they offer two types (veggie or seafood). The seafood portion is actually super generous and there's a good variety. I was a big fan of the grilled veggies in the paella as well, although they were pretty unconventional. Overall worth a try once for the ambiance and experience, but wouldn't come back for the food. This is a beautiful rooftop with a great ambiance and I love how there are fire pits everywhere, it's pretty unique! Ironically, one of my favorite things about this spot was also that it felt like it was a rooftop in Chicago or NYC and the views were beautiful. Although it is located in the Tenderloin, since we Ubered to the area, getting there wasn't too bad. Our waitress was also super friendly and gave us blankets since it was still a bit cold even with the fire pit at our table. Although this is more of a bar, we got dinner here with our drinks. We got pork belly skewers and the pretzels to start with, the pretzels were okay but the pork belly skewers took me by surprise, they're cooked so well -- so flavorful and melt in your mouth. We also got the burger and it was yummy as well, along with the fries that came with it. The drinks were enjoyable as well and each one had great presentation, and pretty strong too! My one complaint about this place is that you have to pay $10 to secure a reservation, it's nonrefundable, and it doesn't go towards your spend. I don't think I've ever seen that before. One of the better rooftops in sf! Especially if you can get a fireplace. You'll definitely need a reservation if you want seating or to be near a fireplace, although I've heard they still usually have room for walk-ins/standing room. The outside of Charmaine's is not the safest place and the door was a bit difficult to find at first so I would definitely recommend Ubering there if you can. We made a reservation for 3 at 9pm on a Friday night, and on Friday and Saturday nights there's a minimum $50 spend per person for any party 3+. At their prices a $50 minimum spend is really just 2 drinks, so not terrible. I hadn't eaten dinner yet so we also go some snacks. Nothing looked particularly appetizing at first but the fish tacos and potatoes were genuinely so delicious they paired very well with the drinks. The drink menu is huge and you can't go wrong with any of the drinks. The waiter was very patient in taking our orders and answering any questions. The best part is definitely the view. With the trees and the plants there's this cozy warm feeling that'll keep you on the rooftop for hours. Even sitting you can see almost a 360 view if the city, and the cloud and the fog can't even get in the way. read more

We were first seated outside but due to the sun I requested to be seated inside and they immediately accommodated us. The paella had two options -- seafood and vegetarian. Reading other reviews it sounds like my issue and lack of responsiveness has happened more than once. A large party comes in and they direct the entire bill to one person. I would never ever recommend this place for a large group event. For a recent gathering, I called ahead and explained that I wasn't sure how many people would show up and asked if we could simply meet at the bar. They said yes. But when we arrived, security insisted I book a table for 10. I agreed and gave my credit card to the bartender--specifically to cover the table, not the bar--so my guests wouldn't be charged. At the end of the night, I was shocked to see two separate charges: one for the table (which was reasonable), and another, much larger charge from the bar--with no itemized breakdown, no communication, and no check-ins during the four hours we were there. I suspect I was charged for drinks ordered by people who weren't even part of my group. Happy hour but I was charged for $30 drinks. The final total was $1,331 (for just the bar), and I paid it on the spot to avoid making anyone feel uncomfortable. Since then, I've followed up twice for clarification (over a month period)--and have received no response to my recent calls and e-mails. This was a major disappointment, especially after years of being a loyal customer. The lack of transparency, poor communication, and zero accountability were unacceptable. Charmaine's is probably on the top of my list of rooftop lounges I enjoy frequenting. Being new to the area, the Tenderloin, isn't on my list or anyone else's list for that matter to want to come down to. I guess no risk no reward. Located in the Proper Hotel on the rooftop they do a good job to ensure who and how many people get access to the rooftop via elevator. It usually will require some que in line and longer wait the later you decide to show up at night. The lounge is an indoor - outdoor layout. The atmosphere as the website does reflect a European chic with an energetic vibe as the music is playing throughout. The indoor and bar area space is laid out such that there are several parts to accommodate large and small parties, while the outdoor seating has heaters for groups to congregate around and its well-appointed with plants. It goes without saying that the views are pretty stupendous. Big plus! I haven't eaten much from their menu, but what I've seen looks good. Bar service and wait staff are attentive and friendly which brings me back. Sunday's from 11--3 is their paella brunch that is a nice time and experience. I would suggest getting reservations especially if you arrive in groups. With all that said, I found myself coming to Charmaine's routinely and the area shouldn't dissuade you from coming here. read more

It is always nice to find a rooftop destination in San Francisco. It's not high in the sky and there aren't sweeping city views but it has a very comfortable environment. I did not expect to find a lush relaxing environment in this part of town. You enter via McAllister. There is connecting door to the Proper Hotel but you still need to check in before having access to the dedicated elevator. They'll take your name and relay it to a host upstairs. Downstairs, a host will escort you to the elevator and send you up. When you arrive it feels like you walked into someone's penthouse - lots of light, comfy places to sit, urban sight lines. There are al fresco seats along the south side with firepits to keep you toasty warm. If there are foggy afternoons it must be beautiful to sit outside. The crowd looks to be after work non-tech professional and early theater-goers so the food and drink is geared towards their expectations. We easily made a prepaid reservation through OpenTable a few weeks beforehand. They have a two hour seating limit but didn't rush us at all or anything. Went to Charmaine's for a friend's birthday dinner and while in theory sounds fun- their execution was a bit rough. We were a pretty large party and we were seated outside at a fire pit. Not sure the exact details but because of our party size the host paid a minimum for each person. The fire pit seating just didn't work out. There was nowhere to put our drinks and all of the food we ordered. We were eating charcuterie boards off our laps and passing it around. We couldn't place our drinks down on the tiny surface of the fire pit because then they would get warm. The seating just didn't work. Their food was good but tiny eats- what you would expect from a rooftop bar. It was so difficult to eat them. I have to say their drinks were some of my fave of all time. Super yummy and well balanced! If you do come here opt for one drink to cradle in your hand the whole night. Especially at night- opt to valet since Charmaine's is located in the loin aka not the safest area especially for women. We were very aggressively catcalled and barked at when walking from the closest parking garage. I probably won't go out of my way to come here especially in such a dangerous area. I celebrated my birthday with a group of 9 guests at Charmaine's Paella & Rose party that they host on Sundays, and it was truly a pleasant experience. Initially, my reservation was not confirmed and I thought I had to change plans last minute but the Food and Beverage Director reached out to me to personally apologize and rectify the error. While we did not get off on the right foot, I really appreciated the immediate support and attention I received. On Sundays, Charmaine's offers unlimited paella for $30 + fees between 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Firstly, they do not skimp on the seafood - every plate was loaded with juicy shrimp, mussels, and clams. The non-veg option is great for seafood lovers but one of the things I appreciate and my motivation for hosting here was the vegetarian/vegan paella option they have. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was and how it did not fall short in comparison to the seafood alternative. I will say though, paella is quite a filling and heavy dish so none of us could eat more than 1-2 helpings. As for the ambience and service, it's everything you can imagine from a Proper Hotel establishment. While it is located in the Tenderloin, the rooftop quickly transports you away with its chic and classy vibe, especially during a warm SF summer day. The only qualm I had was that the tables are a little too small and low to comfortably eat on. Our server was wonderful and always checked on us. They ran out of the $48 Azul Rose bottle so she generously provided us the Angels and Cowboys one at the same price when it's usually $64. Overall, I would highly recommend you to check out Charmaine's Sunday event while it's still beautiful in SF and particularly if you're celebrating a special occasion. Charmaine's aesthetically speaking is one of my favorite rooftop bars in the city. Just the beautiful interior and exterior decor got me impressed. In addition, the fact that the outside patio area is huge with multiple fire-pit, couches, and breathtaking skyline view of the city is a huge bonus. On the downside, the street parking is hard to get and the closest garage is a few blocks away. When you actually drive through the neighborhood it's really sketchy and unsafe. Due to a confusion with the server, I waited over 15 mins to place an order. I had to ask just to place an order, but from then, service improved throughout the dining experience. In terms of food, the roast eggplants with house-made pita chips was the highlight of the night. It was really tasty and delicious 10/10. The crispy fish tacos and fried potatoes were my second favorite. The fish tacos could have used a better sauce (green/red sauce) to enhance the flavors, but still good 8/10. Came here with my guy for a 5pm reservation on a Friday night. I had been wanting to check out this bar for a while now and never had a chance. The first seats that our host sat us down at was a low two seats surrounding a fire pit, which was great because the sun was about to go down and I know it gets chilly at night. However the fire pit was whipping fire so high out of the glass cover of the pit that the surrounding leaves on the bushes next to the pit were singed - not a great look or very comforting! We asked if the fire pit could be turned down and our waitress let us know that it's an on or off situation. She said we can take a look around at different two tops (specifically pointing out two locations) and told us we can move if we'd like. My guy and I grab our menus and waters and take a look at the two locations she pointed out and sit down at one of them, where the fire pit is lower in flame. The host man comes running over and says "you need to consult the host for table changes". I tell him "oh so sorry, our waitress let us know that we can move if we'd like". He looks at me straight in the eyes and says "you need to consult the host for table changes" To set the scene, there are two other parties on this rooftop at this time, one party of two sat at a table behind us and a table of four. It's between 5:05-5:15 when we move to the other two top. There are dozens of other seats around. Like ok dude - I'm sorry that I didn't know your company's policies and trusted another employee of yours? I didn't understand what he wanted here. I apologize for the mix up and he scoffs and leaves. It felt like a total power trip for seemingly no reason. We ordered a smoked fish dip and while the fish dip itself was fine the pita chips that were served with it were simultaneously soggy with oil and stale. After going to law school around the corner, you would think I would have come here all the time but I actually had never been until 2 years after graduating. Well I was definitely missing out! My friend and I did not have a reservation but she got there at 4:45 and put our name in for a table. When you arrive, at the door that says Charmaine's not the door that says the Proper Hotel, they'll take your name and check your ID, then you take the elevator up to the rooftop. The rooftop has little fireplaces that are lit to help keep you warm when the wind blows. After looking at the menu and deciding we were both hungry, we ordered the pretzel rolls to share. I ordered the Mr. Jinks and my friend got the Big Cat. I really liked my drink, it was fruity but not overly sweet and was almost the consistency of a smoothie. We also enjoyed the pretzel rolls and liked that the mustard was quite spicy. The only downside was getting the check, but it's not a total surprise because you know the prices of the drinks beforehand, but it ended up being a little more expensive than I anticipated.
