A very well executed rooftop experience. Spectacular view of the San Francisco skyline, well thought out floor plan to minimize congestion on thoroughfares, elegant seating beset by comfy fire pits. The venue was segmented into rooms and outdoor space making it possible for guests to have an indoor/outdoor feel at the same time. My company rented out an entire room and it was an outstanding experience. The staff delivered craft cocktails efficiently, every hors d'oeuvre was exquisite, and security kept our party private without giving the appearance of being intrusive to the other guests. The staff here are amazing, the ambiance is really nice. Make a reservation for a table on the deck with a fire pit and sit/enjoy the city lights with your cocktail or food. The server was an absolutely amazing young man who was very professional, thoughtful. There are better restaurants in the city, please don't let this restaurant being on a rooftop deceive you into wasting your time and money. I visited Charmaine's with two friends on a Friday evening. We arrived hungry and ready to experience what the trendy rooftop restaurant had to offer. We made the reservation weeks in advance, yet we waited for nearly 30 minutes for a table to be made ready. Furthermore, we were seated in an unpleasant area at an unpleasant table; a fireplace table directly in front of the door separating the inside dining area from the outside dining area. Not only were we seated in a high traffic area, but we felt squished, to say the least. The fireplace "tables" are beautiful yes, but having to eat with your plate on your lap due to lack of tabletop space is not so great, sitting there felt awkward and uncomfortable. The 30-minute wait and seating issue weren't significant enough for us to leave the restaurant, but then came time to order. As a vegan, I was overjoyed to see that they were able to substitute the meat patty in The Proper Cheeseburger for an impossible patty. I ordered the Impossible burger and notified the server that I was vegan to be sure that no cheese or sauce containing dairy would be added to the burger, the server then informed me that the burger could not be made vegan because they did not have vegan hamburger buns. Fantastic! It's 2022 and they have no vegan options besides a $30 salad with radish, tomatoes, and avocado. At this point, I was beyond frustrated and definitely was not in the mood to spend $75 (the restaurant minimum for Friday reservations) at such a poor establishment, so we left. Really enjoyed our quick time here. A friend and I came in to grab a quick drink before a show at Golden Gate Theatre and it was a cute time. Shout out to Jaime, the best bartender ever! The view was beautiful. The evening was pleasant weather wise in the city that night, so it made for a great experience as well. We ordered the "Proper Cup" per Jaime's recommendation and it was delicious. Sitting at the bar, we loved seeing how much care he took to make each drink. Quick happy hour with my lady. We booked a reservation just to make sure that we didn't have to wait. I am not going to complain about the parking because it is SF after all, but the location itself. We didn't feeI safe walking here. So if you are going to walk there, I will suggest you walk with someone. Nice rooftop experience. The view is nice but not great. When we got there, we got seated right away. But we had to wait for quite a while before a server came to check on us. There were plenty of empty tables as you can see in my picture. So I didn't see any reason for it. Anyways, we ordered our food. I ordered fish tacos, which was surprisingly good. I also ordered the rice ball(not sure of the name), it was descent. I've have always wanted to try charmaines, so when a girlfriend of mines says she was going to have a birthday gathering there I was excited to finally go. Unfortunately one thing bad kept happening after another. First when we arrived we were not seated where we made a reservation at. We had at 8 people on the reservation, the place where we sat was for a party of 5 at least . Not the worst ever but a little it was annoying . Some had to sit on the speaker so we could all fit. I would like to note that they gave our table to a white couple, who came in later (I mention race bc everyone it absolutely made a difference). While we were eating a waiter came up to us and told us we will have to move outside bc they had a party reserve it. When we told him were not moving outside, bc were already settled and they gave up our initial seating, he became upset. We never saw that waiter again. So 45 minutes after, another waiter comes over. At this point some of our party never even got a chance to order. So the whole time we were waiting with no menu, or QR code on the for us to scan , of course we go on Yelp and google to get the menu so IF an WHEN someone comes and assist we will be ready at least . When the waiter came we told him what we wanted he told us straight up we don't sell any of that here (I asked for churros) I show him what I saw on Yelp of a picture IN Charmaines he said that it must be years ago. Not the first time that has happened where Yelp and google were updated . But it's the condescending attitude and the non Chaka to attitude that made thing worse . So finally we were like let's just cut the cake and go. My friend brought a sorbet cake for the birthday girl we were so excited to blow the candles out. When they brought it to the table it was completely melted! The whole thing a puddle! We were pissed. The bday tried to be a good sport about it but it was terrible. It got worse! We asked for a knife to cut the cake. They said because of liability they can't give a knife to cut the cake! What?! No one gave a plates of silverware to actually eat the cake we had to go get it from the back ourselves! I couldn't believe it . Where was the manager? What happened to our waiter for 45 minutes? Why did we have to sit on the speaker instead of where we actually had a reservation at? Why was our $100 cake ruined ? Why did we have to get up and get our plates and silverware like it's a buffet? I come from retail management so I feel for the food industry, and it's very disappointing and disheartening that way were treated. Customer service was trash. It's sad that I absolutely believe that we did not get treated fair bc were a black group celebrating. Charmaines has to do better read more

We did the all you can eat paella that included two options. A vegetarian option & one that included shrimp, clams, mussels, & chicken. A chef serves you directly from the fire and you have the option of adding aioli & a hot sauce. I believe cooked in the kitchen and kept over an open flame outside to serve. Flavor was good, but I did get a sandy texture in a few of the clams. One plate was very filling & made it back for a small plate of the veggies- I think that I may have preferred the veggies over the other. Veggies included artichoke, sweet potato etc. had a Mexican mule from the bar, but wasn't worth the $22. I know the city doesn't get hot often but I would visit the idea of adding umbrellas to the tables or a cover as the sun was just cooking everyone. We were lucky that it wasn't too busy and we were able to move into the a shaded area others that arrived after us weren't so lucky. Unfortunately it was too hot to stay until the event ended. Charmaine's never disappoints. During a recent stay at The Proper, a friend & I came in for a few after dinner drinks. Because I hadn't been since pre-pandemic, I was a little concerned that the experience would not be the same as previous visits. I was WRONG. Wemerson is an impeccable bartender. We ordered a variety of cocktails from tequila to bourbon based, he hit it out of the park EVERY TIME. Each drink was perfectly balanced and beautiful. If you don't see your poison of choice on the menu, he is well equipped to make you something based on your desired flavor profile. Run, don't walk. read more

Not only does this place have delicious food, but they also have an amazing aesthetic. It is great to see an open-air restaurant in the middle of the city with a great view. We sat in the center of the rooftop lounge and were able to see the bay as well as Oracle Park. My only pitfall for this restaurant, which clearly doesn't affect their starts/rating, was the fact that their food gives "sit down and eat here" but their seating areas give "lounge only." If you are tall, or if you have a disability this place will probably not be the best for you, the seating just is not accommodating for this. read more

Charmaine's is very nice but it's definitely the kind of place that prioritizes the glamorous rooftop experience over actual substance. All of the food and drinks were decent, but incredibly expensive for what you get. I don't mind paying high prices for exceptionally high quality food, but this wasn't that. Three regular pretzel balls for $15, a regular burger for $30, two standard fish tacos for $25, etc. On top of that, they charge you a $5 reservation fee per person, require a $50 minimum per person, AND charge an additional 7.5% "service fee" on top of all bills. Service was friendly but a bit inattentive. If you're specifically looking for a glitzy rooftop cocktail bar in SF, I still think you should give Charmaine's a try at least once as long as you're fine with the prices, but I don't think I'll be back. read more

Came for outdoor seating as they are back open; it was my birthday dinner! I would give this place more 3.5-ish stars in reality. Some things: - It's quite difficult to find parking around that area, it's only street side parking and the area in general is quite populated with homelessness :( - We made a reservation on open table, and they only hold it for 15 minutes max - There is a 2 hour max on staying there - Automatic 20% tip is charged - The food menu is quite small, and there are little tables next to the couches but you mainly eat from your lap - no birthday treats :( We ordered: - 2 drinks ($18 each): tasted quite strong, pretty decor and good portion - Salted cod croquettes (4.5/5): For $9 it was tiny, but the flavors were quite good and cozy! - Pork Bank Mi (5/5): It was $20, and came with a side of fries. The banh mi was delicious and I love the homemade ketchup they make! The rooftop is nice with the firepits, and they offered blankets for when it got cold. The SF weather sometimes blocks the nice view though. Service was good but there weren't many people when we went! So overall if you're willing to splurge, it's very expensive but the food we ate was good. read more

Tried the All you can eat Shakshuka Saturday Brunch. They're accommodating with changing the reservation even the day of. It is in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood (much like the rest of SF) so plan your walk/parking route ahead of time. The view and venue itself is BEAUTIFUL btw. We had our reservations for 11:30 (it was still pretty empty) so we took advantage of that and got a ton of pictures. I definitely want to come back for the paella and try that out as well. For the Shakshuka you can get as many refills as you like, and each service is GENEROUS! There are 3-options: - regular with cheese and eggs (this is a bit on the tart-side) -this one was my favorite! - a cheese-less shakshuka with eggs - vegan shakshuka (no eggs/cheese) All three contain tomato, spinach, garbanzo, artichoke + other ingredients. Considering the price some basic drinks should be included also for a brunch offering they don't have any coffee or tea options which is odd. We ordered a new mock-tails which were ~$10/e definitely a bit small for the price and decided to skip dessert. I also think our server was a bit stuck up (they sort of ignored us the entire time) and we chad to holler the other severs but that was fine sithe rest of the staff was super nice and helpful read more

I love rooftop bars. I was hosting there a meetup event for 10 ppl without reservation. There was so nice host and she got us a nice spot at the fireplace. Mostly we're just drinking, so they were good taste-wise and price-wise. Just a few people ordered sandwiches and they were enjoying it them. The view from the rooftop is much better than from the Everdene rooftop bar. And the interior is much better. read more

Check your charges! I went to Charmaine's a few weeks ago to enjoy a rare afternoon of SF sunshine. More on that below, but first...my friend and I split the bill. I have a receipt that proves it. I happened to look at my bank statement and noticed I was charged for the full amount of our bill. After theee tries getting a call through to them, I called the hotel and get them to transfer me on. I asked them to fix the charge, and they took down all my info and told me a manager would call me back to let me know it was rectified. Days go by...crickets. I finally disputed my charge through my credit card, which worked. But seriously, WTF? That's fraudulent. Other than that...at 3:45 in the afternoon was I surrounded by hipsters sucking down overpriced drinks because of the Uber IPO. I saw more ugly mom jeans than I knew existed outside of 1985. The view was phenomenal. The set up was pretty cool too. The drinks were great, as were the wonton chips! But I was really put off when at 4:50, right after we had ordered another round of drinks and food, they came by and told us we had to vacate the table because a reservation had come in. Ok, cool, but why let us order more then? Standing around holding drinks in one hand while trying to balance a bowl of snacks in the other (to share!) seemed a bit ridiculous. A bit too pompous for my tastes, plus the whole bill thing, made it a "one (star) and done" experience. read more

i am genuinely shocked that this place has such low rating because we had an amazing experience from the start. Literally amazing from start to finish. The security at the door was really kind and was genuinely concerned for people on the street after a homeless man threw something at them from across the way. Once we got to the top, the hostess walked us over to a table and when she realized she made a mistake on the seating she immediately took us to a new spot and she was really friendly. Our server was thoughtful and patient while we tried to decide what to order. When we finally did decide on a few plates and some drinks they were to die for. Literally everything was so good! I just wish the portions were bigger because i made the mistake of thinking it was a restaurant so we were still pretty hungry. Came for my first time for a birthday on a Monday evening at 8 pm. We had reservations, and there were a lot of people seated when we got there. However, the six of us had a nice seating area around a firepit with comfy couches and chairs. The decor around the rooftop is also nice- very NYC. While we received good service, there are a few things that made me knock off 2 stars. First, I brought a cake and asked them to bring it out later. They did, with a couple candles, and then sliced it up. BUT then there was a $30 cake cutting fee on the bill - so just be warned if you are bringing a cake for a small group. Second, the cocktails were not strong at all. While tasty, I'd like a little buzz, especially for $18 a pop! Third, a bunch of people in our party ordered food but it was a little awkward for them to eat it with the short side tables. It is also difficult to do shared bites without a central table. The inner bar area was beautiful, and if I came back I'd just saddle up at the bar around sunset with a glass of wine and a bite to eat. read more

What an amazing night at this classy rooftop bar in the heart of SF. Kicked off my birthday month here this weekend. The people who took care of us here starting with the person in front, Fernanda and Herman before we went upstairs to the rooftop were so hospitable and as busy and booked as they were, they really went above and beyond to take care of my girlfriends and I. When we were at the rooftop, Naomi, was extremely nice and accommodating and made sure we had great seats with the fire table. She made us feel so special. Lastly, Jim our server was equally nice and efficient with all our yummy food orders. I will definitely spread the hood word about this classy rooftop bar both verbally and through social media. She then passive aggressively proceeded to mention the $75 restaurant minim as if she was trying to make sure I could afford it lol. Luckily, she was CONVENIENTLY able to find a table for me within 5 minutes of my arrival and escorted me to the elevator. When I arrived to the roof, the staff were a lot friendlier, and the atmosphere was absolutely STUNNING... However, I cannot say the same about the food. I ordered the steak (medium) , and was prepared a sliced up rubber boot with a side of fries and marinara sauce. I was hoping at least the flavor of the steak would save the day, but After one bite I was disappointed once again. The meat was chewy like gum and flavorless. You're better off grabbing a steak from Applebee's or Denny's...... it's that Tragic. The only good thing about this restaurant is the scenery and the cocktails. OH ! And not to mention, despite the amount we spent on this crappy restaurant , we were provided the check and asked to leave because they had other customers waiting to be seated. I've personally have never been asked to leave a restaurant to make room for other customers before today, so it was quite disappointing. If I were you, I'd reconsider and expand your options. This was the first time I have gone to Charmaine's but have heard of it ever since living in SF. I went with my roommates to meet one of my roommates parents and it was a great place for friendly conversation, good food, and feeling "lavish". It's a good restaurant/bar to meet with friends, celebrations, or of anything special. To start this experience, we drove to get there. Parking is difficult. We valeted our car at the hotel and only because her parents were staying there. There is a parking garage about 2 blocks away but it doesn't appear to be the most safe or prettiest neighborhood so park and walk at your own caution. Once we got there, we showed our vaccine cards to the lady in the front and then took the elevator to the top. We had a reservation so it is better to have one as well! Our reservation was outside and we had one large couch and two couch chairs that surrounded a fire pit. Depending on where your seating arrangement is, you can have different views or different couches/chairs. They are quite comfortable but it does make it a little difficult to eat without a proper table in front of you. Service: For the most part, it is pretty good. Friendly but also seemed to be in a hurry. This is not completely their fault since it was busy. He also helped us make up our minds in what to order. Atmosphere: One of the big reasons we came was for the elusive environment Charmaine's seems to hold. Well, this is not wrong! The music, fire pits, couches, and other customers fit the mold of luxury. Bottom line, it's nice. You can expect the same as well otherwise it's not worth it. Food: For apps, we got the pork belly skewers, French fries, and charcuterie. These were pretty good. If I had to choose between the three, I'd probably get the charcutiere again because it has a bit more variety. There isn't anything that stands out about them but they are good. The menu is pretty limited to be honest. I was disappointed there weren't more options but it's also more of a drink place. We ordered the fish tacos. These were also good. Again, nothing spectacular especially for the price of $22 but it does the job. We didn't order drinks but the we got the creme brûlée and this was also good. Everything was good. Nothing personally wowed me so expect to pay a higher price for average food. Overall, this experience was good. The food is good, not really worth the price, but you are really paying for the atmosphere. Our group enjoyed it, got to dress up, and had a great time. LOVE LOVE LOVEEEE THIS PLACE! When you first arrive you have to whip out your ID and wait in line to get in. I think we came at the perfect time because there was no wait! We got seated at a table outside with a warm comfortable fire pit! It went out a few times but the servers got the "engineers" to come fix it promptly! Even when it got super busy we were well taken care of by everyone at the establishment :) Everyone who worked there was AMAZING! Super nice, super friendly and super attentive. I love everyone there!! The cocktails were BOMB! And the aesthetics were my ultimate favorite! I got kissing in the California sun which was pretty pink and super tasty! If you like sweet pretty drinks I highly recommend. For foodssss we got the cheese plate which was also very good! Different cheeses, fig bites, apricot jam and cracker and bread! Charmaine's rooftop bar is definitely a beautiful place to catch up with your friends and watch the lights as the sun set. I recommend making a reservation. We went on a weekday and I love how I don't feel like they are rushing us. I got the Kissin' in the California Sun cocktail and it was pretty and sweet. I also enjoyed their fries and roasted pork lettuce wrap. My friend got the fish tacos and she enjoyed it. It is a limited menu and it's more of a place to drink than eat. I also had the Japanese meatballs, which I'm not really a fan off. It gets a little cold but they have a fire pit and I think if you come really late, they offer you a blanket. There's a line outside, and it may take a bit of time to actually get into the elevator and up to the roof, so I would give myself time for that if you are thinking about time. I would recommend getting a ride there, I think it might be difficult to find parking. Overall, I would recommend it. read more

Summary: 3.2 Stars = Average. Ok, so I really wanted to like this bar...really wanted to. I stayed at the Proper, and the way they promoted this restaurant to me at the front desk, it was like...this is a hidden gem. While the views and the decor are nice, the drinks and food didn't really wow me. Ambiance: 5 stars. Easily a cozy joint to hang out. The decor is classy and quirky, the fire pits are everywhere...and oh, the views. It's a nice respite to the grimy streets of the tenderloin. Food / Drinks / Quality: 2 stars. I ordered a couple of cocktails and dessert. Mr Jinks, was a fairly bland cocktail considering the ingredients used should have robust flavors: Mezcal, Guava, Bitters... The drink came with a number of ice pieces in it. For the price ($18) a double-strain technique should be the go-to straining method for all (if not most) up-drinks. I ordered the Strawberry s'mores and a warm cocktail (The Crookshanks) to wash it down with. The dish came looking gorgeous! Loved the bits of flowers as garnish--also totally edible. While pretty, the smores were pretty hard. Thick, dense graham crackers and not-quite-melted chocolate, made this one a little hard to get through. It was tasty, though. The Crookshanks was a slight improvement in the cocktail area. Service: 3 stars. I need to start with how difficult it is to book a seat, even just for 1, at this restaurant. The front desk couldn't even book directly, which is very odd for a hotel restaurant (my experience with getting reservations at hotel restaurants have generally been easy and guests usually get preferential treatment). Everyone, including hotel guests, must book through open table. Seats are usually filled by the morning of the day you are looking to book. So, while the booking was annoying...the service at the restaurant was stellar. My waitress was great and constantly checked on me throughout my stay. Value: 2. Again, for the quality of the drinks and food (not the quality of service), I would not give more than 2.5 stars. Quite expensive for more of a 3- star restaurant than a 4-5 star. Cleanliness: 4. As for cleanliness, and especially during COVID-19, they did a fairly good job sanitizing surfaces and ensuring proper distancing. read more

This business is just plain fraudulent. I made a reservation for 8:30 PM on a Thursday, noting that their rules on OpenTable state that you will be penalized if you cancel within 24 hours of your reservation time. At 5:30 PM on Wednesday (27 hours ahead of reservation time), I had to cancel my reservation. Here is where they really make things difficult. They do not permit online cancellations after 5 PM on Wednesday and OpenTable tells you to contact the restaurant directly. I called the restaurant (at least 10 times) and got a machine each time. The voicemail box for the machine was full, so I couldn't even leave a message. The automated message on the machine says that I need to call back between 12 PM and 4 PM, which obviously wasn't an option for me since that would make my cancellation within 24 hours. I tried to call the hotel and told them to leave a message with the restaurant, but they were also unable to get a hold of anyone from the restaurant. Finally, I sent an email to them to say that I needed to cancel and I was outside of 24 hours. The next day, I received a response from the manager saying that the penalty fee for canceling would be applied, despite the fact that my request was sent 27 hours ahead of the reservation time. No explanation, just a statement saying the penalty fee will apply. I responded by pointing out that that was inconsistent with their rules and I should not be charged. After that, I received no further correspondence from the restaurant, so I was forced to lock the credit card I had on file in case they decided to charge me. Sure enough, the next day, I received a notification from OpenTable that Charmaine's reported me a no-show for the reservation. This place has a nice ambiance and it is beautiful. The drinks were good and the restaurant provides blankets for outdoors. Parking was a bit difficult as they do not have an area for you to park for free. Make sure you don't have any valuables in your cars. The reason why I would give this place 3 stars is because the food were a bit bland and I was hoping that there would be more selections too. I would recommend the pretzel bites and fries. Make sure you make a reservation before coming here. I went on a Sunday so it wasn't too busy and it's nice. Our server was sweet and always make sure we were taken care of. As beautiful as this place is, I don't think I will come back. read more

Nice view but the bartender ruined our pride weekend. I understand it is pride weekend and the staff must have been overwhelmed with a large crowd but we were blatantly ignored while standing at the bar. We stood literally at the counter while patiently waiting for almost 20 minutes just to the right of the bartender. He served every person that walked up to the bar and didn't even acknowledge us even when I said "Hi can we order a drink?" Then 20 MINUTES LATER says to us "can you go to the other bartender at the end of the bar?" We ended up just leaving even though we bought tickets to this pride rooftop party. read more

I read a few bad reviews about this place, but I wanted to give it a try as my friend and I were having afternoon tea in the hotel at Villon. I made reservations for 4:15pm and was greeted with a friendly smile upon arrival. We were then escorted to the rooftop and greeted by yet another smile upon entry. Once we got to our table, our server Malakai came by to say hello and take our order. We were not quite ready, so he came back later. We really wanted The Big Cat drink but it was served over a big piece of ice; he told me he can see if the bartender can do it up, and they sure did. Malakai to the rescue! What a friendly and attentive server! He asked if we wanted to order any food but we said no, as we just had afternoon tea. I mentioned MAYBE fries a little later. When we were almost done with our first cocktail, the manager whose name I understand is 'T', stopped by to check in. This place is just overdosed with friendly employees with lovely smiles. I mean I didn't mention Terry, who also came by multiple times to check up on us. You will not have an empty drink I tell you, bc they just make sure you order another before you're done with the other. Btw, an hour later, Malakai asks, "Ready for those fries?" Overall, a lovely place to have drinks. The view is awesome, the cocktails were really good and service beyond expectations thanks to T, Malakai and Terry. FYI - I read something about a $65 min pp, but that only applies to guests of 3+, and it's mentioned in the OpenTable reservation. For those that say it was not made clear by the server, that's bc you need to READ more carefully. Will definitely be back! read more

Amazing atmosphere with stunning views of the city and a lovely outdoor patio with many fire pits. Great selection of cocktails and wines. The food was nothing outstanding but if you are eating definitely get the pork belly skewers as they were the highlight. Beautiful roof top restaurant that show cases the city by the bay. Great cocktails and some fusion appetizers and food. Service was amazing and we had a great time. The valet is ridiculous expensive but I didn't want to deal with parking my car. Its over $18.00 an hour. There is a minimum of spending per person it was $75-100 per person not sure because we went over for 2 people and some bites and 2 cocktails each. read more

I've been wanting to check out charmaines rooftop bar for awhile now and finally got the chance!! Definitely make reservations ahead of time and specify outside. We made reservations too last minute so the only available tables were inside but it's still beautiful! We tried kissin in the California sun, proper cup, and their charcuterie plate ;/ I don't think I'd get that again, how does a charcuterie plate not come with cheese and only one slice of bread cut up HOWEVER, fantastic customer service I'd definitely come back and reserve an outside table next time!
