My first time ordering from Charo Chicken and it won't be my last. I was going to order online for pickup and had a question. I called and the phone was answered politely by Carlos. He answered my question and then asked what I wanted to order. I was shocked, i didn't realize you could still place an order for and pay at pickup. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and paid $2 extra for sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. He said, 10 minutes. I arrived approximately 10-15 minutes later and it was ready!. The restaurant was brightly lit. A nice wall menu and a menu on the counter. They have weekly specials that include a beverage. They even have outside seating. My the chicken in my quesadilla was flavorful but also dry ( the reason for 4 stars) The guacamole was good. I will go back to try something different. I've been coming to Charo Chicken for 15+ years, and it never disappoints! Their flame-grilled chicken with the lemon garlic butter sauce is incredible.I always get extra. The garlic mashed potatoes and Giant Burrito are also favorites (ask for extra tortillas to make mini burritos!). I love the location of this Charo Chicken in Long Beach because they have great parking for pickup. Therefore, I am in and out quickly. Plus, the staff is always friendly and quick with service. The other great thing is that Sprouts is close by so if needing to do grocery shopping real quick, it's close by. Sadly the food has gone downhill in the last few years. I've been a customer since it opened. Sunday night I called and the phone just rang and rang and rang. Then it cut me off. After 4 attempts someone finally answered the phone. The phone was answered by Lupe who was almost impossible to understand. I called about 8:00 p.m. and my order was supposed to arrive 8:45 to 9:00. It never arrived. I was busy working and it was almost 10:00 p.m. before I realized my food had not arrived and it was late . I called but I guess they were closed. On Monday I tried calling back it took three times to get someone to answer the phone this time. I asked for the manager. The employee said yes I'll get him. Before she went on I asked for his name. Then she said oh well the real manager's not here I can give you the shift cook. That made me a little upset because if I hadn't asked for a name she would have given me someone who wasn't the manager. Then I told her how do I get to the corporate office. And she says will you want to talk to Moe. I have spoken with Moe years ago. So I asked how to reach him she put the phone on hold and then the same Lupe that took my order the night before came on the phone. I sent two messages through their message center without response. The internet said that the Seal Beach store was also considered a headquarters so I called there. I spoke to a young man who did not seem to know what he was doing. I guess the Paramount Boulevard store used to be the actual headquarters but it's now closed. Now I have a $36 charge on my credit card and never got dinner on Sunday night. I ordered a steak burrito and not only was it falling apart because it wasn't wrapped right, but there was no steak. It was all rice. Nothing else just rice and a little bit of steak. This place should not be selling burritos if he sells them all like that. No flavor and nothing but Rice! They weren't even wrapped tight when I opened it up It just fell apart. It seemed like they were just wanting to get rid of them. I would prefer Del taco or Taco Bell for a way better burrito which is a sad thing to say. And when I went in there, the person who handed me the burrito looked like he shouldn't be working in the shop!! He might've been the owner. I went back a couple more times to try the rest of the menu and it didn't disappoint. The food here is a bit similar to what they have at pollo loco but bigger portions and better marinated. The grilled and shredded chicken is really good, great with the garlic butter. The rice and beans are really flavorful. The employees have always been good to us, I haven't had a bad experience. The place is on the smaller side so I like sitting outside. It's on the back side of the shopping center, just find the big 5 and it's a couple of doors down. If you're into grilled chicken and that style of Mexican food but you're sick of places like pollo loco, give this place a shot. It's a few dollars more but worth every penny. The manager Moe contacted me immediately after my review and assured me that the dry chicken isn't their standard and offered me a coupon to try again the same meal. I would say for customer service alone this is the best customer service I've ever encountered for the past 4 months since Covid 19 started. I would say it is amazing to see this local business is trying their best to still keep up with their standard regardless the hardship of restaurant business during this pandemic.
