My wife and I ate here during our January 2025 visit to Tucson. We were misdirected by the i phone map to the wrong location but we eventually found the correct location. We were seated in a quiet section of the restaurant which was nice. We had eaten here last year and liked it but unfortunately this year was not very good. My wife had the meal with branzino and shrimp and a side of corn. The branzino was good but the shrimp was way over salted and the corn side dish was not to her liking. I had the tomales, one vegetarian and one with chicken. These were flavorless and I did not care for the sauce. My side of brussel sprouts was ok. The salads were the best part of the meal. I'm a regular here. Charro Vida is right around the corner from me, and you better believe I'm happy about it. Whether you are vegetarian, carnivore, or vegan, you need to try the jackfruit tacos. They have found a way to make anything and everything taste unique. And even their burgers are excellent. The portions are perfect size for me, and I have brought many friends and family members here when they come to visit. I've never had someone yet be disappointed. Give it a try. This place is a mixed bag and a little disappointing. It was freezing last night when we entered. The AC was on and it was in the fifties outside. I asked and it was turned off. I was charged four dollars for a club soda with a small piece of lime and no ice. They added two dollars for corn instead of a salad and then wanted me to tip the cooks two dollars. The food was decent but the avocados used for guacamole were not fully ripe. Highlight: Sopa De Mercado One of the best meals I've ever had, and we don't usually order soup. I could eat this every day. If this was the only meal we had and service was great, five stars easily. The rest: service was slow, supposedly understaffed but didn't seam like it. Sat for 15-20 minutes without water or taking orders, restaurant was only half full. Came across this place by mistake (Teaspoon next door was slammed so we checked out this menu and quickly pivoted). What a meal after a half marathon! We just about got one of everything and none disappointed. Mimosas were good too. For my first time eating at CharroVida I must say I found it to be a wonderful experience. I had went with a few of my friends after work and we all had an amazing time! We were all so starving when we entered, and left with happy faces! Our server, Natalia, was great with an amazing smile and attitude! I've been really looking forward to trying this place out, but it ended up being just "okay". I'm not vegan, but not opposed to not having meat at every meal. They DO have meat, but oddly, only vegan cheese. I'm not big on fake products as I find them to usually be unhealthier than the real ones. So I asked if I could have real cheese on the Tucson toast. I was also adding eggs, so no need to keep vegan. But I was told nope, no real cheese in the restaurant. (But they have meat??) I loved the Barrio bread, and the cheese turned out to be okay, but the mess of avocado, arugula, chimichurri was, well, just a mess and not very appetizing. The eggs were plopped on top, and the flavors were just off. I'm not sure why, I just know I would never order this dish here again. Absolutely excellent. Had the best enchilada , and the brussels and sashito peppers were fantastic. And, the added bonus: steps from Frost!

First I'll say the restaurant is lovely, except for the handprints all over the windows, and the open doors with no blower to keep out the flies. The menu is interesting and they have a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. The chocolate for the churros was excellent, but the fryer wasn't hot enough and the churros were mushy in the middles. The salmon was ok, the chicken dry and unseasoned. I'm appreciative of the food not being salty, but mine was bland. There was no salt or pepper on the table, and I didn't get the opportunity to ask. I was a tad surprised that plain iced tea is overpriced $4, but the other menu items seem priced properly for the area. I wasn't impressed enough to think about a return visit. read more

I love the health focused menu, chock full of food that is soo food it doesn't taste healthy haha. I am not vegan or vegetarian but I'm weirdly obsessed with the vegan nachos. Idk if it's the jackfruit or the vegan nacho cheese or their (homemade?) chips but it's just piled-high deliciousness that I crave way more than "regular" nachos. I also love to get a bowl and add their delicious cauli al pastor and yucca fries! Our server Brandee was outstanding during dinner tonight. Attentive and mindful of us as first-timers and out-of-towners, she made excellent recommendations. Of course, the menu also offers some outstanding choices--all seemed excellent. And when you walk into an establishment too hungry to make decisions, it's nice to connect with a server who listens to your expectations as far as meals and drinks go. From the Barrio Vida, which served as our appetizer, to the Taco Trio (chicken and steak) to the Vida Bowl with steak, brussel sprouts and cauliflower, both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed every bite of our savory choices. *Pre-pandemic review* Love the vibe of Charro Vida. Very clean and modern in comparison to the original Charro or even their Steak/Del Rey location. The flavors are unique and tasty. Their zero margaritas are great and I appreciate that they sell wines that were organic. Great happy hour prices also 3-6pm daily! Tableside avocado hummus is the best appetizer. So fresh and a combo of flavors you wouldn't think would be so good together. Skip the Brussel el padron, not too flavorful. Tuna stack is good also, fresh and not fishy at all. An impressive selection of vegan/vegetarian items (who has Tempeh in Tucson?!) but I wasn't too impressed by the hemp tamales. For those meat eaters, the carne asada is great on top of a bowl or salad. I've found the grilled chicken to be a tad dry. Haven't been too impressed by the deserts as frost is too tempting being next door. read more

I love all of the Charro concepts, unfortunately, this one was not one of my favorites. The location is perfect, the ambience is perfect. But unfortunately, the food was subpar. I was not impressed. The staff was fantastic, and helped very quickly. The food also came out quickly but unfortunately lack taste or presentation. I was surprised of that since most of the other charros are fantastic. Maybe I went on a bad day. And these are what they were pleading at the time. But unfortunately subpar. I will definitely give him another. Try to see if it's a different result next time. There was no doubt that Charro Vida would be a success when it first opened because it was a brand made under the Tucson-household name, Flores Concepts. Flores Concepts regularly impresses me with their other restaurants- Charro del Ray, Charro Steak and El Charro. Each entity is well-thought out and establishes it's own Tucson-style Mexican food. So when I heard their newest addition would cater to a Mediterranean-Sonoran cuisine, I was all on board. The decor of varying blues and turquoise instantly creates a relaxing environment. On the beverage menu, the hemp horchata is my go-to. My must-have appetizer is the Padrón y Pastor! which features roasted Brussels sprouts and padrón peppers tossed in chile ancho and guajillo with grilled pineapple. Additionally on the menu, you will find a variety of healthy and colorful selections. My dining experiences with Charro Vida have been nothing short of excellent. The food here continues to be really good. My "go to" menu item for this nicely decorated, iconic-family-owned, and beautiful location at the base of the Santa Catalina's Western edge is the Dos Enchilada's (with chicken. Or, as they say in Meh-he-co, "Polos"--like the collard shirts frat boys wear). *lame attempt at humor. (It's really pronounced, "Poi-oh") In fact, as I type this mostly positive review, I am eating the remnants of what I brought home last night-- and it's still really-really good (a nice combo of texture, and flavor elements....and it was a lovely presentation until I tossed my left-overs about in the take-home carton.) I could also add that if my wife were forced at gun-point, (perhaps by aggressive, misguided tourist/bandits who wanted a good dining experience before they left the Sleepy Pueblo) to tell them which restaurant is her favorite in the Dirty T, Charro Vida is going to be mentioned in her top 10. Easily. That being said, there are, in my humble opinion, two issues that have raised their ugly heads (maybe "ugly" is too strong of a term, let's change that to "unpleasant-looking heads" in our last 3 visits there.) First, the service has been off. Like really off. The El Charro name is synonymous with "restaurant royalty" of Tucson and they have staff in some of their locations that we have commented on about how amazing a wait person they were (*you really have to stand out for a patron to think this). We are not very picky, and go with the flow, gladly give the benefit of the doubt, and always overtip (I waited tables in my youth so know what's up when things go south--and guarantee that it often is not the server's fault). But we sat for about 10 minutes before being acknowledged (the room we were in only had two other tables with patrons at the time). When the first pleasant-personalitied waitress arrived she took our drink order and left. Then a series of new wait staff arrived (also showed pleasant demeanors and were kinda nice looking--*excuse my objectification) and each time they acted like they were our first contact. They each re-took the drink orders, bemusing my wife and I and our two guests. The drinks (and then later) the food came after slightly extended wait times (not super bad waits, but we were beginning to wonder what was up). As the meal progressed, we were not checked on for an extended time (we were basically done before we were asked how it was going), and then once we finished our meals (*as I said, they were tasty dishes) we sat for nearly 15 minutes, ready to pay our bill...pushing our food remnants around with our forks as the conversation ebbed like dying embers of a fire. (My metaphors are a bit weak). The extended waiting for a server to come around has sorta become what appears to be a standard practice here, as this is now the 3rd time we noted it. It's not enough to make us not return, but now a dining experience that normally lasts 45 minutes or so, gets stretched out to almost an hour and 1/2. (great for a first date, but I've known my wife for almost 40 years, and I wasn't even that interesting back in the 80's. And we also almost missed Murder She Wrote!" (joke about us getting old--*and it could be a clue to my being a big ol' grouch and complaining on Yelp. But I do hope I am not that much of a grouch ) And at the risk of sounding like an old fart...My second issue is that the portion sizes have gotten smaller (yes, I know as an observant reader, you recall that I shared that I brought food home in a doggy bag and had it for breakfast. The deal is...I am trying to cut my caloric intake down a bit so cut the portions in half before diving in. You might consider doing the same, Gordito) (kidding). Anyhow, the prices have snuck up a tad...as the plate's offerings have shrunk a tad. But the overall experience is still a good one and the issues I have related might just be temporary. read more

Unfortunately for me, one of my "used to be favorite" restaurants has slowly gone downhill into a one star restaurant. Last night was most likely my last visit. They completely revamped the dinner menu and no longer offer Vida bowls for dinner. The new options are all $30 per plate - completely overpriced for this type of restaurant. We ordered soup/salad, a couple drinks and appetizers. At 4:30pm it took 20 minutes to get served water and drinks. Another 30 minutes to get a very mediocre tiny plate of nachos. Then probably another hour to get the rest! How is this acceptable when there were only a few patrons in the entire restaurant? Wait staff never refilled our drinks and by 2 hours of sitting there (not by choice), I had to beg for the check which even had an error on it. Finally got up and asked the hostess to find a manager so I could pay the bill! She was nice, but completely nonchalant about the super slow service. She asked if it was my 1st time there?? Uhm, no it's been many times and I've slowly watch them go downhill. Sorry, but the revamped menu isn't an upgrade, food isn't great, and the service is as bad as it can get. Bottom line is that we won't be back. read more
