We had a wonderful brunch here this morning. Sat at the bar with 2 of my girlfriends. Great service, cute establishment, and fantastic food and drinks. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first sat down and looked over the menu I actually wasn't aware that this was mainly a plant-based restaurant. There is meat options and plant-based options that make the experience good for any type of eater. The service was a little slow even though it wasn't packed. I ordered a prickly pear margarita which was amazing a little bit on the pricier side for the size I would say. In regards to the bowl, the chicken had really nice flavor to it, the yucca fries were crispy outside and fluffy inside, so delish overall. This is the usual disclaimer that I rarely write reviews... But I have to write a review for this amazing restaurant! I have grown up in Tucson and I know the Charro family of restaurants quite well. However, I only discovered Charro Vida a few days ago and have eaten there twice in three days! Please check out their website and the links to the articles written about them. This restaurant is using very fresh ingredients and as many as they can get locally. Surprise: they also feature amazing vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. The staff are extremely well trained, attentive, informative, and do everything they can to make sure that your meal is a success. They also do not hesitate to make recommendations based upon your preferences -- I tried things both times I would not have initially ordered and loved both!! I also appreciate that the background music is just that: background. It didn't cause any problems for a table of four to converse without raising our voices. The tables are not jammed together so there is a great feeling of privacy without losing a sense of coziness at the same time. Please check this restaurant out! It is neither "traditional" Mexican food nor so far afield as to be unrecognizable as Mexican food! I highly recommend the corn and green pepper tamales, the sides of mushrooms and street corn; table-side guacamole ... and I even love their hottest salsa, the habanero (tho the two milder ones are tasty as well). Used to be better. Chicken fajita meat is pre cooked cubed meat and very tough, as well as the beef. Service is just okay now. We have been going here for years and see the decline in its authenticity. Ambiance is still genuine though. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Oro Valley and Tucson. Their bowls are healthy but delicious at the same time, sometimes a combo that fails, but not here! The ambiance is nice inside and they have a small patio area for dining outside. The food has been consistent, with vegan and traditional options. Tried a couple deserts that were delicious as well. Disappointing! We ate here in March 24 and were excited to return October 24 (and our anniversary). The restaurant was closed prior to our visit for menu update. Sadly we weren't impressed. Food was mediocre at best. Service was slow. We had to ask for our table to be wiped down as it was filthy. Food was awesome. I had a salmon burrito smothered in green sauce. Was so filling that I couldn't finish it all. So snack for later. My wife had the carne asada bowl on greens with the cauliflower El pastor and Brussels. She practically licked the bowl as she ate it all. Our daughter had the brunch huevas rancherarras and loved it. Our grandsons kids meal was more like an adult size plate if delicious gf chicken fingers and sides. The salsas were incredible. Woah. This place was incredible. Great ambiance, decor, and they even had music on Sunday during brunch. We got the quesobirria vegans tacos and tamales. The place seemed pretty busy, food was great. Just some confusion when our order was taken. A woman took our food order frantically scribbling on a piece of paper, but then the person that brought us our drinks came back a few minutes later to ask what sides we wanted with our entrees. Oh man, I wanted this experience to be love at first sight but it fell short in certain places. First off, we showed up on time for our reservation but were still told to wait despite an empty dining room. I did get to take in the decor which is stunning. The mixtures of vintage pastels, rustic woods and metals were tastefully done. The big windows let in plenty of light and the bar had ample seating. We all sat, but despite saying a party of 4 we were only given 3 menus. I ordered the happy hour sangria with white wine. It was delicious and fruity. Only $5, you can't go wrong. My mom got the zero margarita for $9 and thought it tasted good until she saw a small black hair on the bottom (in her drink) glass. They remade the drink but she said the flavor was not as good as the first one. While we waited for our food I observed the dining room some more. I loved the acoustic tiles on the ceiling! Kudos for being aware of noise levels with concrete floors. I did not appreciate the nearly see-through uniform shirts. It was so apparent every bump under the wait staff's skin. I get it's hot running around but it really detracted from the upscale vibe. Especially since our waiter was wearing a black bra under the cream shirt. So how was the food? We started with the guacamole-hummus which was very bland and lackluster. It sounded like it was supposed to be mixed at the table but she just said if we didn't want something to let her know. No offer for more if we wanted :( they just dumped the ingredients in and that was that. We also tried the Brussel sprouts which were the star of the show! A bit heavy on the oil but beautifully charred and flavored. It was a big portion size and between the 4 of us we barely polished it off. The other two appetizers we tried were the cauliflower and jackfruit tacos. Both were decent, again heavy on the oil. My mom loved her jackfruit soup but I didn't try it. I'll definitely be back, it's a place to explore seeing how plant based options are still a bit scares in Tucson. Kudos for being inclusive but still needs a bit of tweaking. read more

Not sure what happened at Charrovida today but our experience was not good. We had heard wonderful things about the restaurant but it was a major disappointment for us. We love eating at other El Charro restaurants around town and hoped for another new favorite- but definitely not today. I know the restaurant is still fairly new but they have major work ahead of them. Our service was terrible and the amount of time it took to get the food to the table was horrendous. We were seated for 30 minutes before we got our chips and salsa, and another 20 before we got our appetizer, our main courses took over 30 minutes to reach the table and it was only a salad, 3 burrito plates and a kids meal. Management knew there was an issue and did take $15 off our bill for the inconvenience but never bothered to come over and talk to us. We had to ask three times for a spoon for the child's meal and multiple times for water/drink refills. Now for the food unfortunately this did not save the meal. My Frida salad with salmon was lackluster and needed something to give it a punch of flavor. The salmon was bland. My daughters Carne Asada burrito barely had any meat in it and it was an additional $9 for the beef. Three people at the table ordered burritos but each person's burrito had different ingredients inside and we were confused by that, since it is one item on the menu with only a different protein added. My husband had no beans in his but he had a ton of quinoa, while my daughters was mostly was filled with garbanzo beans and no quinoa at all. The children's bowl was good but the chicken was overcooked and dry. We also ordered an appetizer of the Hola Hemp mini burritos, they were disappointing as they were also bland and no sauce to save them. While the concept is a wonderful for an organic Mexican food focusing more on whole and plant based products, it has to be flavorful and delivered in a timely manner. Unfortunately Charrovida failed to deliver either for us today. Tried CharroVida for the first time last week. Really wanted to love this place, but my verdict is that I was underwhelmed. First, service at the front was lacking. I arrived at 5pm on a Sunday night and the place was about 1/4 full. The front receptionist was clearly overwhelmed and we waited 20 minutes to be seated. Now onto the food. Everything is ala carte, meaning if you order tacos or a Chile relleno like we did, it doesn't come with any sides. You have to order your own sides and I find it problematic to pay extra for sides and have them not be anything special. I had the corn and the Brussels and they were both meh. The relleno was mushy and unrecognizable with all of the stuff on top. It was supposed to be dipped in some kind of egg concoction that I could not taste or see. The whole thing was unsatisfying. I dumped the corn on it and felt like I was eating Mexican overcooked chop suey. My friend ordered the tacos and they were surprisingly large and looked pretty good. The best thing was the side of sweet potato fries she ordered. Didn't really go with Mexican food, but I'm willing to roll with Mexican fusion concept. The servers were efficient and the wait time for food wasn't too long. Ambiance was good. Nice decor and located in a cute shopping strip. The place got pretty full by 6pm, but not overcrowded. Underwhelming. Not really sure why this place has so many five star reviews. Sure, the front outdoor patio is a nice spot to meet up with friends, family, or even a date but that's about it. We sampled a number of their appetizers- quesadillas, sampler platter, Brussel sprouts, and carnitas - everything vegan - but everything was bland. This surprised me as you would think that a place that specializes in vegan cuisine would have well crafted flavors and sauces to make the dishes stand out. Service was also so, so slow. Our waiter would disappear for what seemed like endless periods of time and when he did show up he seemed extremely rushed. We had to carry our check inside at the end just to have them run our credit card. I hate to say it but if you were to dine and dash while sitting on the patio, I don't think they would even notice for some time. Very strange and unpleasant. Will not be returning. read more

While the food was excellent at this place, it was overshadowed by horrendously slow service. It took my party of six 100+ minutes to finish dinner on a Tuesday night. We ended up bussing our own table. The picture included is of a neighboring table that was left with food and dishes for 20+ minutes after the guests left. We ordered dessert and the server brought it out to our table covered in dishes left over from dinner (approx 25 minutes after we were done eating). We cleared a spot for her to set the dessert down and preceded to enjoy our dessert surrounded by our dirty dishes. Charro Vida is a nice spot with great vegan and vegetarian options. I don't know why it's listed as modern European, Mediterranean, or desserts because it's not even close to the first two and while they have churros it's not like a bakery or dessert place. More accurately this is like modern Mexican vegan/vegetarian fusion. They have Mexican dishes like tamales, enchiladas, etc. made with plant based ingredients. What's nice though is unlike a lot of vegan/veg places they have plenty of meat options too, so there's something for everyone. The hemp horchata was really good and I liked it a lot. We split the cauliflower al pastor and the Brussels sprouts and I liked those a lot too. I had the chopped salad for my main and it was just okay. It was a little bland but I guess I should have ordered something more fun. My friend cleaned her enchiladas plate. Loved the churros too! If variety is the spice of life you really like Charro Vida. This is a plant based menu, with options to add eggs, fish or chicken. First of all it's just a fantastic space to be in with a lot of sunlight, open dining, beautiful dining area, bar, that is inviting and warm. They also have a wonderful cocktail menu for people coming for brunch or lunch or dinner. I've come for every meal they offer and I recommend mist highly. I am a big fan of their protein bowls which you can create however you like, with a mix of grains and beans, and other good things. For people that have special needs in their diet this is a place you have to try they have something for everyone. No gluten no problem, vegetarian, vegan, hemp tamales, so much to offer. I also highly recommend their mini Chimi appetizers. And every time I've gone I feel like I've gotten really good service from the waiters, the bartenders, and the hostesses. Trendy plant-based-focused spot from the El Charro folks and one of my first dine-in experiences! While they didn't seem to limit capacity or block off tables, doors were opened and everyone was masked with hand sanitizer available. Even though it took a while to get our drink and food order with a less-than-full restaurant, our server was very friendly and thorough. The four of us split the Brussels sprouts appetizer with a spicy sauce, and were very impressed. I ordered a vida bowl with grains and jackfruit carnitas with yucca fries and street corn. I was a little uncertain how it would be presented, I though the fries would be on the side. It was all in the bowl with the ketchup cup inside. You kind of have to know how to order and I didn't want to cause a delay since noise level was high and we were all masked. In the end, everything tasted great, I was pleasantly surprised how close to meat carnitas jackfruit is, and service was courteous.
