We booked a reservation and when we got there it wasn't on their paper written list at the door, but they thankfully ended up finding a table for us near the window. We ordered a couple cocktails. I ordered the "gin"let because I love gin cocktails and lemongrass. I can handle some spice but this was the worst cocktail I have ever had. It was so I credibly spicy I kept coughing trying to sip it. I ended up giving it to my significant other. He didn't like it either, but was able to drink it quickly so we didn't waste it. I don't know if it was made incorrectly or what, but I really recommend that you don't order this drink... I would love to see an expanded drink menu and a physical one. We had to order off the QR digital one and for some reason I was having issues with the download opening so it was a bit of a hassle. We got the Thung Tong appetizer. I strangely liked the crispy wrapper the most, it with the sauce was nice. It definitely had more in it than pumpkin and potato roasted in mild curry and coconut basil aioli like the menu said. I'm super picky about my food, so I wish it was all listed. I ordered the Pad Swe Ew. My Thai of choice is usually Pad Thai, but I opted to try something new! The menu says the Pad See Ew is Stir-fried wide rice noodles, Chinese broccoli, broccoli, carrot, roasted garlic, sweet soy sauce. I ordered this without the broccoli. It came perfect and so darn pretty! Seriously, what a pretty dish. The noodles were tasty and they made sure there was no broccoli like requested. The name of this place is fun to say - "Chatayee"! Our party of four was jazzed to try a new place with a veggie-forward/vegan menu. Esq and I are vegetarian/pescatarian-leaning, and restaurants who showcase such offerings are always welcomed. We enjoyed some fun Thai-inspired cocktails while we perused the menu. All were refreshing and balanced. Our appetizers didn't disappoint. For the table, we ordered: - Massaman & Roti - better than any other roti I've experienced in Philadelphia. Delicious! - Chicken Satay - juicy and accompanied by a cucumber salad. Unique! - Thung Tong - beautifully crispy without being greasy - Autumn Rolls - none of us were missing the lack of animal protein in these rolls! My Pad Kang Long entrée was delicious. The tofu was silky, and the vegetables (cauliflower, squash, carrots, and string beans) were tender. The yellow curry sauce was amazing. My plan was to eat half and enjoy the rest for lunch the next day, but you know what they say about the best laid plans. I ate every last bite in what felt like seconds. So good. My dining companions enjoyed their Pad Thai and Boom Bai Tofu. Be cautious of the spice level you select. We were warned to not go overboard, as many spice enthusiasts have been sorry by going balls-to-the-wall with their spice level. The curry came with a pint of white rice. The starter was good but probably better if ordered for dine in. It got a bit soggy by the time we got home. The pad Thai was good and it didn't taste like there was any spice. It was interesting to see a variety of veggies in the pad Thai. Not used to that. I cannot wait to come back for happy hour + dinner! My friend and I stopped here late Saturday night and had a great experience. Very big and clean inside with beautiful decor. Service was great and the food was outstanding. My friend ordered the tofu pad Thai, which had a generous portion and extremely flavorful. What a great first visit and happy hour! My husband and I stopped by for happy hour last Friday and had a great time. We will certainly be back. The only hiccup was when I ordered the happy hour Yards Pale Ale, and it came out very flat. But I brought it to the server's attention, and the server rectified the issue and his service was 10/10. We ordered the autumn rolls, Tod Mun Puk, Roti & Massaman curry, and Thung Tong and I honestly recommend all of them. The Thung Tong is so cute and unique though, I definitely recommend that one. The fritters (tod mun puk) were very flavorful and unique, and the massaman and crispy roti were spot on. These appetizers plus a couple rounds of beers filled us right up for dinner. My husband even texted me the next day telling me how good the food was and how he wants to go back .. he never does this. I went to Chatayee Thai tonight for Drag Happy Hour which occurs every Monday from 4-6. The queens over there did an amazing job in the heat and performing up and down the sidewalk to everyone there and even the passerby's! Drink specials for happy hours were awesome! Lots of $5 dollar beers, rail drinks, and wine! The happy hour food menu had so many delicious options with many being vegetarian or vegan. The tofu and egg rolls were well cooked, well seasoned and paired with the best sauces! The rice was out of this world! I would order again in a heartbeat! Chatayee Thai is located in a very good, centralized area in center city Philly. It's a pretty decent restaurant! A couple of friends and I came here for dinner on a certain night. We sat outside since we felt safer since COVID was around, but also weather was nice. There was also a live musician playing, so that was pretty cool! Food Lots of traditional Thai food that you would think of in a Thai restaurant, but definitely with a "chef" feel to it. The taste and seasoning were great, and the portion was a good size! The presentation of the food was definitely on point. I definitely would say it is slightly more expensive than most Thai restaurants, but not too outrageous. They also have a lot of specialty dishes as well, which I have yet to try (much more expensive). I recommend the Pad Thai or Pad Kee Maow (Drunken Noodles) if you want a solid dish and to be safe, haha. They do serve alcoholic drinks as well. Whenever I crave Thai food in Center City, Chatayee Thai instantly comes to mind! The portions are huge and perfect for sharing with friends so you can get a taste of multiple dishes. Also vegan/vegetarian friendly! I personally believe the quality of a Thai restaurant can be judged by their Pad Thai, and Chatayee did not disappoint at all. Their Pad Thai is soo flavorful, and combined with the essential lime squeeze, it is easily the best one I've had in Center City. A must-get as an appetizer is their massaman and roti. The roti was so hot, buttery, and flaky and the perfect medium for the super savory and delicious massaman that had lots of veggies and potatoes. Their special Boom Bai Kai curry and Kang Dang curry are both delicious and feature chicken with a bunch of vegetables. My personal favorite was the Kang Dang curry, which is a red curry with bamboo, string beans, carrots, bell peppers, and basil (an essential). Both are served with a fresh bowl of fluffy white rice. I have also tried their Pad See Ew, which I often avoid at Thai restaurants because it is usually always cooked super salty. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! The overall ambiance/vibes of the restaurant are really nice. The workers there are also super nice. I celebrated my birthday here, and they were really nice in letting me bring my cake and keeping it in the fridge for me. They also surprised me by bringing it out all lit up, so that was super sweet. Of note, I have noticed the service can be a little slow. Disappointed. This place has been getting good reviews and I've dined in (pre COVID) once before and walked away with great service. Tonight was different. My girlfriend ordered take out for us through Caviar and we specifically ordered off their vegan menu. The ordering process was smooth and the turn around time was about an hour - no problem. We received our food (contact free) within the specified time limit and were excited to chow down. We started to plate our food and noticed that our Tom klong soup had shrimp in it!! We're both vegetarians and this was simply unacceptable. We lost our appetite and also our trust in the establishment. Calling them to report this did result in them promising to refund us the cost of the order but our dinner was ruined and we were left hungry. It's a shame as we did want to continue to support local businesses during the pandemic. I would advise to proceed with caution when ordering for vegan items. PJ Was our waiter and he was really doing such an amazing job and making sure everyone was pleased happy and getting his job done as efficient as he could. My friends and I got a lot of things on the menu and they were all really good. Be careful when you choose the spices the medium for me was not spicy at all but everyone likes spice. I got medium space for my Massaman & Roti and it wasn't spicy at all - not sure if it counts to say that because of course the creaminess from the coconut milk in the curry cuts the spice. For my noodles I got spicy and that was kind of hot, but definitely good heat I really liked it. The drinks were very strong, The midnight Manhattan is sort of like a martini so you can kind of get a second glass out of it because they leave the shaker with you, which is nice. Took just one visit at Chatayee for it to quickly become one of my favorite HH spots in the city! They have a relatively extensive variety of food and drink items on their HH menu, which is available until 5:30pm on the weekdays. The server was really attentive and friendly from the moment that I arrived, especially while I was waiting for my friend to find parking nearby (not an easy feat - would avoid attempts to find parking in that area of the city). Throughout the evening, the server was super professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. We ordered a variety of items on the menu, including the papaya salad, the massam and roti, the vegetable fried rice, the eggplant dish, and the spring rolls. I was immediately impressed by how much food was served; we were both stuffed to the max and still had enough to pack a plate for leftovers. We loved sharing the different dishes and enjoyed each of them. Will note that the fried rice and the papaya salad def had a spicy heat to it. In all fairness, while we were ordering, the server had checked in with us asking about our tolerance for spice levels, and we had naively both said we liked spicy not realizing quite the kick it would have. While the spice was manageable, I personally would probably ask to dial it down just a little next time. For drinks, we both ordered the specialty HH drink that day, which was a lychee drink with a vodka base. I really enjoyed it, even though it was a bit sweeter than I generally prefer. Ive been searching for a really good Thai place and think I just found my favorite Thai restaurant in Philadelphia. We got a couple of entrees and decided to do family style among the 4 of us. Kang Dang this is a red curry with chicken type dish. I've tried a lot of red curries, but this was absolutely delicious. The flavors were perfect, there was a lot of chicken for the ratio. Pad See Ew Shrimp- the noodles were cooked perfectly. Most places over cook their noodles, but this was near the al dente type. There was ample amount of shrimp, which was seasoned and cooked well. Boom bai Kai- this was our least favorite, it's their fusion of a Indian style dish. The flavors were really good, but it definitely felt more Indian than Thai. Panang sai krong on- I AM STILL DROOLING ABOUT THIS DISH. This was the fan favorite among our group and everyone wanted more. The braised beef was very tender and literally fell off the bone. The sauce had a peanut flavor with a touch of sweetness. Spice level that we picked was spicy, but if you do not like spicy food I would go to mild or medium. They also have a spice rack which they will give if you asks. It has 4 different options (sambal, chili powder, hot oil, and chilis in vinegar). Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We did get reservations beforehand, but we were able to get our table very quickly. This restaurant is so beautiful. The decor and the layout was clearly well thought of. I really appreciate the fact that they have a Vegan/Vegetarian menu that is not a knock-off of the regular menu, but instead unique, well prepared, and delicious alternatives. Even my meat eating husband decided to order off the Vegan menu, because it was so interesting with enticing entrees. Come here after my daughter's White Coat Ceremony for celebration. The parking around the restaurant is a huge issue. We had reservation at 6 pm, but the parking zones around would not activate until 6:30. Atmosphere: There was a lot of indoor dining and servers were all masked. One server sped-walked around the restaurant and was very abrupt in answering our questions. For example, he was not able to bring us drinks or give us our check, but gave us abrupt answers of "no, I can't do that," without asking for another server. I imagine they could be very understaffed here, but the behavior felt a bit rushed. Food: The tom yum soup lacked its typical basil leaves. The chicken satay was probably my favorite, but no other dishes were particularly outstanding. I could see this as a casual takeout option in the future if I'm craving Thai food, but I didn't find anything very special or a need to return anytime soon. SO, so glad that I decided to try again because we had an amazing happy hour experience! We each got the cocktail of the day, and it was great - strong without tasting strong at all.
