Stopped by Chatman's Chicken after leaving school around dinner time, and it couldn't have been more convenient -- only about 10 minutes away and exactly what I was craving. I had been thinking about this spot since my last visit a few weeks ago, and it did not disappoint. This time I ordered the 8-piece dark meat with Lemon Pepper, and hands down -- they have this seasoning on lock. I'll be honest, I'm usually not a Lemon Pepper fan because it's often overdone or poorly balanced, but Chatman's absolutely nailed it. Perfectly seasoned, flavorful, and cooked just right. I also grabbed the red beans and rice, and wow... it hits harder than a church choir on Sunday. Fresh, rich, and full of flavor -- true comfort food done right. They were pretty busy when I stopped in, which says a lot about how good the food is. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and while I waited, one of the ladies even hooked me up with a red Kool-Aid. Oh how I love those discoveries! I bookmarked this place a while back, it is too far of a drive but then on a Sunday evening I decided to just go drive there! I had to do the drive thru since they were getting ready to close. The man at the window was truly nice. I wanted the gizzards and all the other things they have. He politely told me they only have fried chicken left... bummer! I brought the food home which still tasted good! I had to peek and look at it before driving. When I'm out of Austin, I look for any promising-looking fried chicken joint, with a special emphasis on locally-owned non-chain places, and I hit the jackpot with Chatman's. It isn't in the nicest part of town, but in my experience, that is where the Real Deal is usually found. By "real deal," I mean actual bone-in, bona fide fried chicken--and not those dastardly places that just have wings, or everything but breasts! Yes, I am a fried chicken purist. The nice man behind the counter greeted me and immediately asked if I was a first timer. When I said yes, he offered me a sample Fried Riblet--a bite-sized chunk of dangerous deliciousness. I wanted ten more, but I was on a chicken mission. For chicken, they offer three varieties: original, spicy, or lemon pepper. The latter two involves sprinkling seasonings over the original, so for my first taste, I kept it simple. I ordered the 2-piece mixed with fries. The chicken itself was my favorite variety: nice big pieces with a solid well-seasoned crunch and moist meat in breast and leg. The fries were skinny. Not my preferred type, but these were fine, fresh, and hot. The roll was the standard out-of-the bag throwaway. If they had biscuits or cornbread, I'd have died and gone to heaven. As I sat and ate, I just loved the vibe. Some customers were obviously regulars, but everyone was welcomed, and the staff felt like a family. The man who'd taken my order came to check on me, and stayed to chat. He turned out to be Mr Chatman himself. It's clear that he is responsible for all that is good in his restaurant. He spent years learning the business, and serves as manager as well as owner, and he is obviously dedicated not only to great food, but to serving the community. Chatman's feed those who cannot pay, mentor their employees, and give back to their community. Great fried chicken, and a business I can feel good about supporting! Win win win. Went with my family and everything was good and hot. Dark meat two piece, gizzards and fried fish, one lemon pepper one spicy. They sprinkle on the lemon pepper and spice seasoning when it's fresh out the grease so it's not overpowering. Just the right amount of added flavor. Went back again today (7/26) for some lemon pepper chicken and yet again, no disappointments. The chicken was freshly fried and absolutely amazing. My son, who is the pickiest of eaters (will literally only eat McDonald's nuggets, little Cesars pineapple pizza and peanut butter and jelly) absolutely smashed 4 pieces of chicken and 3 of the rolls. He has asked for the same for dinner tomorrow. And has requested we grab enough to last us through our trip to the coast. Needless to say, still the best chicken in San Antonio. Ok, there are chicken places and then there is Chatman's. This place is hands down one of the absolute best places for Fried Chicken. They have several flavors regular, spicy, and lemon pepper. Their collard greens sides are amazing as is the corn bread. While the decor is simple and rustic, the food more than makes up for any shortcomings in atmosphere. They also serve sweet potato pie, which I have never gotten to try due to filling up on chicken. Once your food is ordered it is brought out very quickly. This is another over-hyped restaurant in a crowded space. I visited twice to be able to try different things. Worth noting, you can't order Riblets thru the drive thru. They also are out of a lot of stuff and this stalls the line as people go thru the list of stuff. On my visits they were out of apple cobbler, corn on the cob, sweet potato pie, yams, and Dr Pepper. The best sides were the mashed potatoes and okra. The fries were cold and Mac and cheese was watery. The coleslaw was decent. I'll start by saying my fiancée and I live in Houston area. My parents live in San Antonio and now every time we visit I told him I NEED me some Chatmans! We got engaged 11/29 and the following day this was still the stop I wanted to make even with him telling me I could have anything I wanted to eat before we head home. The food is amazing, it speaks for itself. But the hospitality!? Oh my, I love coming in for a chat with any of the workers. The owner, his wife and their son walked around checking on every table. They make sure you're good and don't need anything. The customers the times we've went become like family. We chat amongst each other while eating great food, and if you know you know that's what good food does. Brings people from all backgrounds together! The mac was ok, but my least favorite was the sweet potatoes. They were runny and mushy, reminded me of baby food lol. I wanted like pecans and brown sugar in them. First of all, I've been on the hunt for good fried chicken since I lived here 2 years ago. I've seen perfectly fried but not perfectly fried AND seasoned. This place right here! All I needed to know is I was looking for the perfect chicken on the wrong side of town all this time. It's not in the prettiest part of San Antonio and that's why this chicken makes sense. It's in a little yellow building with the most awkward entrance unless you're coming from that side of the road. They have a drive thru which is my preference these days. I've never had to wait more than 5 min for food which is good considering everything is fresh and hot. Now to the food. It was perfectly fried (even the breast stay moist) and perfectly seasoned (regular, spicy or lemon pepper to choose from) and that lemon pepper doesn't disappoint. I've been twice. The first time I asked for lemon pepper on only one of my three pieces because I didn't know whether it was going to be a sauce or a shake; whether it was in the batter or what. It seems more like a shake. It reminds me of when Popeyes used to sell that Cajun seasoning packet for their chicken and they kept running out of it because it was so good. It enhanced the chicken. Chatman's lemon pepper tastes like that. The fried corn nuggets were good but I'm a sucker for a good fried okra and I was not disappointed. The second time I got all lemon pepper but I got fries and the nuggets. Overall, I'm excited about this find. I would love to try the fish next time but you can't order it from the drive thru. I'll just have to go inside and order it. If the fish comes in lemon pepper, I'm more excited to try it. This place rates high in my book. The only thing I would change is I'd like a biscuit or some other roll besides a dinner roll. I'm not much of a bread person so that's one less carb I have to worry about. I will admit... I had my doubts upon entry, but this place is now on my favorites list. I'm a huge fried chicken fan and I'm very picky- anyone who says Popeyes or similar is the best isn't a foodie, don't fight me. This was absolutely dripping with juice, so fresh and delicious! And the prices are way lower (for just chicken) too! They also have riblets which I have never tried and they are bomb! It's a small mom and pop shop and the owner is often checking in on your experience, very nice guy. We wanted to get a bite to eat from somewhere not our usual haunts and I had seen recommendations for Chatman's. We went through the drive through. The man taking our order was very friendly. The food was fantastic. The fried chicken was moist but not oily or greasy, it had flavor and just the right amount of breading. It was wonderful! The sides were great. We'll definitely be back.
