First of all, I've been on the hunt for good fried chicken since I lived here 2 years ago. I've seen perfectly fried but not perfectly fried AND seasoned. This place right here! All I needed to know is I was looking for the perfect chicken on the wrong side of town all this time. It's not in the prettiest part of San Antonio and that's why this chicken makes sense. It's in a little yellow building with the most awkward entrance unless you're coming from that side of the road. They have a drive thru which is my preference these days. I've never had to wait more than 5 min for food which is good considering everything is fresh and hot. Now to the food. It was perfectly fried (even the breast stay moist) and perfectly seasoned (regular, spicy or lemon pepper to choose from) and that lemon pepper doesn't disappoint. I've been twice. The first time I asked for lemon pepper on only one of my three pieces because I didn't know whether it was going to be a sauce or a shake; whether it was in the batter or what. It seems more like a shake. It reminds me of when Popeyes used to sell that Cajun seasoning packet for their chicken and they kept running out of it because it was so good. It enhanced the chicken. Chatman's lemon pepper tastes like that. The fried corn nuggets were good but I'm a sucker for a good fried okra and I was not disappointed. The second time I got all lemon pepper but I got fries and the nuggets. Overall, I'm excited about this find. I would love to try the fish next time but you can't order it from the drive thru. I'll just have to go inside and order it. If the fish comes in lemon pepper, I'm more excited to try it. This place rates high in my book. The only thing I would change is I'd like a biscuit or some other roll besides a dinner roll. I'm not much of a bread person so that's one less carb I have to worry about. The amount of praise I can give this restaurant isn't enough, from walking in to being greeted at the register. So, we the decision was made to go to the east side of town. We love to venture out of our north east side of town. San Antonio has so much to offer. It came with fries, which were shoe string fries, done perfectly. Mac and cheese, very cheesy with macaroni shells. Had a great flavor. Had an order of the riblets, I was very surprised with the riblets. I'm used to them being bbqed, not fried. They got eaten anyway. Very tender, but the batter could have used some seasoning. I'm going to try it at home. There was an order of fried liver. I wasn't paying attention when they told me what it was, I just saw them and saw fried gizzards. Well, I took a piece of the fried liver and I had forgotten that I don't like liver. Don't get me wrong, if you like liver, try it here. I just can't do liver. I've tried. Coleslaw was good, okra needed more flavor, but fried just right. Corn was good, mashed potatoes were good. Sweet potato was good. I like mine with marshmallows. And corn bread, sweet corn bread. There were 14 sides on the menu. Almost got them all. Two koolaid. Sweet tea was delicious. All in all. Definitely going back for more. Highly recommend this place. I will admit... I had my doubts upon entry, but this place is now on my favorites list. I'm a huge fried chicken fan and I'm very picky- anyone who says Popeyes or similar is the best isn't a foodie, don't fight me. This was absolutely dripping with juice, so fresh and delicious! And the prices are way lower (for just chicken) too! They also have riblets which I have never tried and they are bomb! It's a small mom and pop shop and the owner is often checking in on your experience, very nice guy. Honestly, best fried chicken I've ever had and given the owner and the prices, well well worth the money spent! Look no further, you will NOT regret coming here! The last time my husband was at Chatman's Chicken, was 15 years ago. He wanted to take me here because he remembers the chicken being really good. It was just like he remembered. Took a trip down to San Antonio for the Holidays and thought I'd give this spot a shot. I could tell from the moment I walked in that this was a local favorite and I love to support those that are supporting their communities. From the get go Chatman's provided excellent service. The food came out quickly and they were just genuinely nice folks. I ordered the 2 pc dark meal with fries and collard greens. The chicken was hot and flavorful, the fries were crispy and seasoned, and the greens were the perfect connector between the two. To end my trip I ordered a few more items for my extended family and was offered a sample of their fried riblets for the road free of charge. Who's frying ribs? Chatman's Chicken that who! As a first timer, I'm standing in line and staring at the menu trying to make a dinner choice. The cashier was very attentive and offered me a sample of the fried rib while I made a choice. Now, I had heard of fried ribs (Hey Chrissy Tiegan!) and wondered if it'd be fatty when I bit into it. This was a well seasoned riblet and very succulent. I should have gotten the ribs but defaulted to fish instead. You have an option of getting your fish simply fried, with additional seasoning on top such as spicy or lemon pepper. I got one of each option on my filets. The french fries were just ok and I didn't care for the cole slaw. They are capable of accepting contactless pay, credit cards and cash. Many people will see photos on Yelp and don't see it on the menu. The workers were patient enough to tell me how to order and what it would cost. Pleasant and welcoming customer service, generous parking and decent parking for the food. You can dine in, order ahead or order in person. Got the half spicy and half regular, but the spicy chickens were half spicy on one side of the chicken and regular on the other. It was kind of funny because red and non red sided chicken. It was really salty but we enjoyed it. Mashed potatoes was a little thick. It is in a very not safe area. A customer behind us walked in maskless. Got refused service and he started throwing a fit and drama. Called one of the staff members "boy." The staff was really nice and dealt with him accordingly and safely. Wow! The chicken was crispy, flavorful and fresh. The restaurant itself is on the small side with limited seating but the food is on point. We ordered a few orders of chicken strips and an order of fried chicken. The fried chicken meal was extremely good. The pieces were big and the flavor was great. The only problem I had was trying to wait for the chicken cooled down so I could eat it! The cashier helped us out during our order with our questions since it was the first time here, she was very helpful and nice.
