I am giving this restaurant Chapmen's only one star. I have gone inside and I gone thru the drive through. I had heard from people that I should go to Chapmen's because it is right next to the District 2 Senior Center. I can not believe the people giving the reviews if they are truthful. Now my 3 visits to Chapman I had long waits in line number one and it was me and people behind. The girl was impatient so you feel she was rude. The chicken I purchased in the restaurant when I got it home and since I had spoken raving reviews to them and giving them my good report for them. I would have thought they would have given me their best. I also ordered potatoes salad and macaroni and cheese. So the one I ordered from did not finish my order but started waiting on the ones behind me. So, I was surprised how bad the chicken was,too. It was old or seemed old and I was so disappointed. Mr Chapman was there smiling in the rear. So, I thought it is going to be great I praised their food and business. The only thing I can say that turned out good was when I returned and spoke about the chicken. The lady gave me a rib let to try and she redid my chicken order and that chicken did not disappoint it was great. So the facts are the second employee was great, she gave me great order. She asked me did I want the sides again and I said no but the chicken was much better this time and the service was also better. I would say customer service needs to improved and do not give customers old chicken and serve the customer you serving completely before switching to the one behind regardless of you know them. Make friends with your new customers so they can return to continue to grow your business. And from those experiences, I drive by Chapman Chicken and think they lost a customer and when I had given them a good report they gave me a poor order and I had to return to get an improved new order. Sad! They lost a customer. Yes, that should have kept me but I forgot the 3 time I visited and noticed the placed and the same rude girl. read more

Few foods are as truly classic staples of Southern food as fried chicken. I love good fried chicken, and one place that stands out in San Antonio is Chatman's Chicken. Even though they offer both dark and white meat, they specialize in dark meat. I vastly prefer dark meat to white, and an 8-piece bucket is only $9.99. They even offer different flavors: regular, spicy, or lemon pepper (which is the best). They also have very good sides. My personal favorites are their corn fritters, 6 for $1.89. But they have all the classic soul food sides you would expect, like greens ($1.69), okra ($1.89), and sweet potatoes ($1.70) But, while their chicken and even their sides are excellent, only one thing stands out in my mind as the reason I go back when I do: Their fried chicken livers. I understand, livers are not for everybody, but I love them, and Chatman's has hands-down the best I have ever had. They are rich and meaty, full of flavor, but what truly sets them apart is that there is no chalkiness to them. None whatsoever. Liver usually leaves your mouth with a chalky feel, but that is entirely absent from these, making them truly memorable. Getting six for $3.99 is a price I gladly pay every time I visit. If you want some affordable fried chicken as well as good soul food sides and out-of-this-world chicken livers, Chatman's Chicken is my place. Fried catfish, fried riblets, livers, gizzards, the sides are killer. I mean, okay, pretty much everything is fried but that's what you come here for. Don't come here trying to eat healthy. Lived here in San Antonio for over 35 years...my first visit First "Off" the Customer Service is wonderful. Very kind and helpful staff. Even introduced me to marinated ribs...that when done taste just like fried chicken.... ...but more importantly this is not just any ol' fried chicken. this is the real deal...i can see my grandmother in heaven with a big old smile...and saying " he finally went to the right place". Just as good as hers. Make sure you wash your fingers before you arrive....you are going to need some time by yourself to lick them fingers when you are finished eating...don't want to miss a bite. read more

1st time here today was honestly expecting the best after my mom had already gone and said it was very good chicken. Pulled up and tried to order a snack pack but they didn't have mashed potatoes which is one of my favorites when I have chicken asked what I can substitute with and they said cole slaw or green beans. Ended up ordering a regular 2 piece dark with fries and corn fritters, got home and the fries were salty and food was warm but not hot. Used to eat here weekly and it was definitely the best chicken in San Antonio. However, the last four or five times we have eaten there the chicken is not as moist and is greasy----almost like the oil is 'dirty' now as in past it was super clean flavors.....now, not so much. Keep telling ourselves it was just a fluke, but seems now the norm is 'old oil' tasting, poorly drained dry chicken. Sure hope whoever was responsible for previous cooking there gets back to it, otherwise gonna have to find another place. read more

Sweet tea was a bit diluted with a strange after taste. THE CHICKEN - good....but not the best I've ever had(I'm from the east coast and spent many years in N.C....so I know GREAT fried chicken). This is the best fried chicken in town - possibly best in the state! The chicken is juicy, even the white meat, yet the crust is crispy and flavorful. I couldn't stop eating. We tried the lemon pepper and spicy and they were also delicious, but the extra seasoning was unnecessary. The original is so good. But wait, there's the sides: the mac and cheese has a thinner sauce, but the flavor is great, corn was juicy and buttery, and whoever made the collard greens really put their foot in it! They were amazing! I could just talk about the food, but that would be unfair. The hospitality on our first time here was unbelievable. We were greeted with such positivity and kindness, we were given samples of the fried ribs (so good), and treated like family from the start to the finish. By the time we left we felt like regulars. This is the third time that my food has been incorrect. Drive 30 minutes to order lemon pepper chicken. Only to get 20 minutes into my commute and hunger took over. Took my chicken out to eat and behold it was incorrect. I drove back 30 minutes for a refund, the lack of empathy and understanding when I arrived was very disheartening. So on Sunday my husband & I were wanting something different he says he's had everything in San Antonio until i told him about this whole in the wall spot my grandparents used to take me to years ago & when i tell you ain't no other place i will ever get chicken from like that. Mr. Chatman i always remembered seeing him in there & he was there this particular day. The store was empty which to a hungry customer is a good or bad thing but I work in the fast food service industry & lemme tell you an empty store means FRESH EVERYTHING! The wait was well worth it. Holy chicken forget bill millers and churches because this place slayed!!! A friend told my boyfriend and I about this place and after hearing that they have the best fried chicken we had to make the trip. When we walked in the staff were incredible friendly and even gave samples of the fried pork ribs. Those pork ribs where just to good to pass up so of course I ordered the plate. Man those ribs where crispy and seasoned to perfection and the meat is juicy! The plate comes with 5-6 ribs and two sides of your choice. I ordered the corn fritters, which where very juicy and crunchy OMG so good! the coleslaw came in a 1 oz container and was so creamy! My boyfriend ordered the chicken strips and fried fish, which came with a side of fries and hushpuppies. The fish was incased with a well seasoned crust and also very juicy. It wasn't fishy tasting or falling apart on touch. The fries also where seasoned very well and everything is hot not room temp. You know they just fried everything and didn't have it laying around. The atmosphere is fun and inviting and the staff asked how everything was? is this our first time here? Chatman's is family owned so you do get a family vibe when you walk-in, the decor is simple and there is a TV. The coolest thing is that they have a drive-thru! Our first time today! Not a fancy place, but everyone was so friendly. Mr Chatman explained everything and took our order. The food came out quickly, and it was excellent. I had a 2-piece dark meat plate with mac & cheese and collard greens. My husband had the same but with mashed potatoes and fried okra. Everything we got was really, really good, but the standouts for me were the collard greens and fried okra. Best I've ever had! Mr Chatman even checked on us to see if everything was ok. A friendly place with good vibes, so we'll be back when we're in the area, and I'm looking forward to trying the gizzards and livers. The only things I would change would be a good biscuit rather than the standard dinner roll you get everywhere. I never eat those. The other thing would be a free drink refill. All in all, a very good place for fried chicken, and I'm still smiling because everyone was just so friendly there. read more

So was in the mood for some fried chicken and decided to go and check this place out after reading some interesting reviews. It's worth the drive if you are like me in the other side of town. This place is so legit felt like I was back in Louisiana for sure. Ok so I ordered me some Fried Chicken and I would recommend since you can spice it up use Spicy and Lemon Pepper also got me some Gizzards and for the sides Mashed Potatoes, Collard Greens and Mac and cheese. The sides were delicious all of them but for me the Collard Greens were so so soooo good I kinda ate the whole family side by myself yeah that good. Chicken was so juicy and delicious and with the seasoning was just amazing. The lady at the counter was awesome too she made some good recommendations and was very helpful and welcoming. Hands down the best fried chicken in SA at the moment for sure. Price wise it's great. And will come back and recommend 100% for Sure especially if you happen to be on this side of town. Today I finally ate the LEGENDARY chicken at Chatman's! And can't believe it's not rated as 5 stars! Lived here in SA and finally are this chicken and can say without a doubt it's the best fried chicken I've ever eaten! I drove 34 miles round trip from my home for take out and will gladly do it again but not soon enough! The mistake I made was that I should have eaten their so I could have ordered more to home with me! Not only is the chicken the best I've had their sides, mashed potatoes & gravy and red beans & rice were just as tasty! Tried all three of their spices and all were equally delicious! In addition to that order a side Mac & Cheese and again they knocked it out of the park! The sweet tea hit the spot as well. The staff was very friendly and welcoming plus one of the nice ladies asked if I ate pork and gave me a sample that was again AWESOME. Almost ordered some to go but knew it would have put me over the top. Can't believe I've missed out on this ICONIC restaurant all these years. But make no mistake I'll do my best to make up for it.
